Waste of 1:30 minutes!

I can never get that hour and a half back. A terrible, terrible movie. Don't even consider watching it. Be warned!

Nice surprise

Burek feels like a throw-back to old times, when movies were simpler. A nice, entertaining feel-good film with fantastic scenery and a beautiful score. But also, underneath the simple plot perhaps lies a deeper message, if you care to look for it. My favorite line "There are no strangers here, only friends you haven't met yet." The film is a Mediterranean delight, just like Burek!

Put me to sleep

Reading subtitles a must with this gem. Some English at times but Greek and whatever else. The people and stories jump around and before long you find Bourek a bore. A young man walking along the beach gets hit in the head with a rock and has amnesia. If that is the plot not much else makes sense after that.

I don't see why it got some good reviews. Maybe they are Europeans or associated with the film. I gave it 2 stars because of the blue Mediterranean.

This is a beautiful film

Never written one of these but had to do it for this movie. A friend recommended Bourek, otherwise I would never know about it. It doesn't have famous actors, has subtitles and is unlikely to show up in your streaming queue unless you like Greek food. I decided to throw in my 2 cents in the hope you find it, if you need something to boost your spirit in these dark times. Now, if you're into flashy fast movies you might not appreciate it. It is on the slow side, like life on a Greek island. I was skeptical the first 30 minutes too but gradually the film got me under its spell. By the end I was literally grinning. And I don't like schmaltzy movies. They are usually too manipulative, you can see it from miles ahead. Bourek is not like that. The beginning with the news gave me a jolt. It was like watching real news today in this cursed 2020. As we follow one character, he leads us to the next, and the next, until they are all assembled on this magical island. The fabric of the stories is intricately woven, coming together in a life affirming allegory of humanity, restoring faith in life's beauty, like light illuminating darkness. And it's funny.

Who wrote the script? A 5 year old?

Movie is really DUMB. I mean it. It's like watching a play - a dumb one - filmed without any taste or real plot. Clumsy. Full of bad acting. A CRAP.

Feel good movie

A nifty film about cultural differences and how meaningless they really are. It's refreshing to see a multinational movie in our time of so much division. The movie references many other films, set in similar locales, or dealing with cuisine, blending them together with its own humor and panache. In the beginning, it takes a while for the movie to get on the road, but once it does, it becomes a pleasurable and ultimately uplifting experience.

Watching Bourek is like going on vacation in a company of good friends

Bourek is a solid indie production that takes you away from troubles into a different part of the world, just like characters in the film. It has drama, romance, humor and overall great interaction between international cast of characters performed by wonderful actors. Al Nazemian as Tarek shines in every scene he's in as poetic philosopher refugee who washed out on shore after falling off the boat. Also, brothers Branislav and Sergej Trifunovic are absolutely hilarious as Serbian brothers on vacation for a dollar a day. And last but not least Mari Yamamoto and Jason Grechanik portray couple in love and starving artists living their dream to perfection. Bourek is a Mediterranean dish that brings all these different characters together after turmoils they go through creating a family of sorts. Experience Bourek the film with your family whatever it might be.

Chill

The film is the equivalent of consuming Adaem's (the Turkish dude) merchandise, sitting back and watching the sunset over the sea. If you can't enjoy that, you have a problem.

Comedy and fairy-tale meet on the sun-shot island of Time

Bourek is a delightful film, intelligently written and visually stunning. It manages to be both a modern-day fairy-tale and a timeless glimpse at mythological figures washed up on the island of Time itself. It's also a commentary on how best to cultivate our gardens far from the crosswinds of globalization where man is a wolf to man. The cinematography is extraordinary (cerulean blues, glistening light, every color shot with visible wonder) and the acting of the lead Katerina Misichroni, aerial and soulful, as well as the marvelous Al Nazemian (who plays a hilarious risen-from-the-sea, Yeats-reciting Libyan refugee) are simply unforgettable. Mr Nazemian's arrival on Khronos is the highlight of the film, and both its mythic and comedic apex. All in all this is a world one dreams to visit time and time again, both for the sheer pleasure of re-encountering Misichroni's and Nazemian's exquisite faces, and for the very lush sensual (and gastronomic) pleasure the movie conjures with such style and comic bravado.

Enjoyable

I saw this movie on a grey rainy day and it managed to cheer me up. It's not slapstick, apart from a few scenes, and definitely not gaudy or garish. If that's your thing, you shouldn't bother. Also not for people who hate subtitles. If you enjoy films in the vein of Mediterraneo or Paul Mazursky's Tempest, you should give it a try. It's an entertaining journey with lovely vistas and music. Some of the acting is uneven, some of the set-ups have been done before, but the movie is able to capture the Greek sunshine, sea, and good mood of its characters into something quite unique and deliver it to the viewer. If you're open to receive it, you will love this movie. By the way, the end credit sequence is an obvious homage to Mazursky's Tempest. I recommend streaming on a big screen in HD with good sound.

Wonderful!

Funny, smart, beautiful and filled with light, "Burek" is a delight of a movie. The cosmopolitan cast is outstanding (especially the brothers Sergej and Bane Trifunovic). It is amazing how many characters and story lines intersect in the film, how the story unfolds, keeps interest and builds for the finale. Anybody who is familiar with that part of the world will also appreciate the subtext of the stories (and not only that part of the world, as two of the many leads are also British and American). Although there is quite a bit of ironic commentary in Burek, it is never mean-spirited, but genuinely funny. We laugh with with the characters, not at them. "Burek" is a film of hope and optimism - it will put a smile on your face.

A delightful way to spend an afternoon!

There's so much to enjoy in this movie. First, the cinematography is lovely with several unique locations in Greece that are beautiful. The musical score is consistently solid throughout the movie. The writer has mixed comedy & drama, so it has an uneven tone, but in the end, it comes together nicely. You do have to stick with it for a while and get past the subtitles, but in the end it's worth it. The performances are a little uneven- with some powerful performances and some phoned-in acting, but as a whole, the film works really well. It may not be a perfect movie, but it has a positive message, which is rare these days, and is different from the typical Hollywood movie. Not for all tastes, but it has lots of appeal.

Lovely!

Well, this movie is probably not something you will have inscribed into your memory forever, but it is lovely and full of positive vibes. I really enjoyed watching this. Good story, nice actors from different countries, beautiful scenery.

Life's good, especially on a Greek island. Enjoy it!

Lots of fake 10 star reviews for this mediocre tedious film

All of the ten star reviews are by single use accounts, created on the day they reviewed this film and never used again.

Despite the picturesque setting this film is just awful in plot, dialogue and unbelievably bad acting. And like a lot of really bad film s, there looks to be an attempt to rescue it by throwing in a "woke" element, in this case a north African "refugee."
