Would I have been so calm at the end of days?

The two young protagonists lark around, flirt, tell secrets to each other, explore the city, drink beers in a flat and wait for an unnamed apocalypse to end the world. On the way, they meet some people, have flashbacks of their lives and show each other that they are true best friends.

It sounds silly and inconsequential, doesn't it? But it's not. The film holds the attention for the whole running time.

Love was fulfilled in one way. But in another, neither lad had time to achieve their last actions and ambitions as the searing light took them.

Well played by the two young leads whose performances made it all hang together. They really are convincing.

    Started slow...

I was thinking when this film began that it was really dragging. Long, lingering scenes of ...well, nothing. The story is about two young men in Mexico City on the verge of an apocalypse. But the pace of the film certainly didn't have any sense of immediacy.

But once the two friends meet up, the movie picks up.

It's interesting that people are mostly so calm about the impending apocalypse, but we are informed that not everyone is quite so calm. And we see some hints that some people leaving the city with a sense of urgency. But the film eschews the usual panic, immoral and destructive behavior that usually precedes the end of the world on film - which was a refreshing way to see it.

The actors playing the friends are very good, and convey a close, gentle friendship. They are at an age of sexual exploration, and talk about their experiences, and what they haven't experienced. Some of the action is portrayed in flashbacks of their experiences. Very nicely done.

One of the guys is gay, and seeks an experience with someone he trusts, which is a central theme in the film.

Once the story gets rolling, it moves at a nice pace, and is quite engrossing.

There are interesting questions swirling in my head as I watched, that were left unanswered - like where their parents are. I actually liked that those mysteries were not neatly tied up in the plot.

During the film we hear occasional radio broadcasts, which I think are especially interesting and positive, considering the precarious state of the planet and of mankind.

Spanish language with English subtitles. And you even have time to read them, and still watch the actors!

Mexican Tale of Sexual Awakenings, Friendship and an Apocalypse

The plot here is that two friends are walking around talking about sex and sexuality. One is supposedly straight and the other decidedly gay. The latter seems to have been around the block a bit and orally gratified nearly all their erstwhile acquaintances. We also have an impending apocalypse.

We get to hear their stories in flash back and the sexual tension is palpable through out. It is funny as there is not any real sex that I can recall. It is a really nice film about the awakenings of sexual desire – the possibilities of youth and that time in your life when you trade secrets with a close friend. I really enjoyed this.

It would have been a good film without the 'end of the World' backdrop but that may have been there to give added immediacy to the plot and make the sudden sexual curiosity and openness more urgent. In Spanish with good sub titles this is a well made, acted and thoughtful film that I can recommend.

    Velociraptor

Two young friends, one straight, one gay, spend their last day together before an apocalyptic disaster strikes the world. Both seem to have had their fair share of sex for their young years, but the gay lad is still a virgin - and he wants his straight best friend to have that honour. We spend the day with them as they discuss and re-live their lives and loves as we build up to the "Big Bang". There is virtually no nudity and some comic and photographic touches help this to be a slightly more subtle love story than we might have expected. The script is pretty ropey, but that's not so important. Worth a watch, as the boys (Carlos Hendrick Huber & Pablo Mezz) turn in good, engaging, performances and this storyline doesn't just run quite to form...
