The 2019 Tribeca Film Festival has officially gotten underway. Coming to the cinematic world between the meat market of the Sundance Film Festival every January and the prestige of the Cannes Film Festival every May, the fest is hitting at arguably the perfect time. Each and every April for the last 16 years, Tribeca has showcased a wife variety of (mostly) independent movies, some of which can struggle to see the light of day, while others fare better and break through. Still, there’s always a gem or two in the lineup, along with even the occasional Academy Award nominee. That should still be the case in 2019, so now is a solid time to take a look at some of what Tribeca has to offer for this year. Last year, two of the best movies ever to play the festival hit in All About Nina and Disobedience. They were joined by the...

Korean horror pic Hide and Seek is bound for Hollywood, and Avatar‘s Joel David Moore has been placed in control of the English-language remake.
Deadline has the scoop, confirming that Moore will now adapt and direct Hide and Seek for Cj Entertainment. Initially released in 2013, Huh Jung’s social horror-thriller grossed more than $35 million in Korea alone, so it’s no wonder Hollywood executives have been circling.
No further details were disclosed about the project’s timeline, but a remake of this size will likely have a relatively quick turnaround. Either way, Joel David Moore will be building on the directorial experience he gained on Youth In Oregon, the 2016 drama starring Frank Langella and Justice League‘s Billy Crudup.

2017 is just flying by! As we have now wrapped up August and are charging headfirst into the month of September, I wanted to once again put a bow on everything that’s come before the impending fall festival season. That way, it could focus us more clearly on the awards contenders to come, all the while remembering the hopefuls from the parts of 2017 we’ve completed. As such, today I’m putting out my list of the best of the first third of the year so far. Below you’ll see what the first eight months have brought us, including some films seen at festivals as well as early year releases that the precursors will surely forget, sadly. I don’t have any titles that I’m embargoed on right now, so this is as close to an exhaustive look at everything that’s hit screens between January 1st and today as possible.

What is it? A bus driver writes poetry in his spare time about the world and stuff.
Why see it? The brief summation above is pretty much accurate in describing the whole of Jim Jarmusch’s latest, but it doesn’t begin to capture the warmth, humor, and humanity the film delivers. Adam Driver plays the title role and creates a character far removed from the easily antagonized and disgruntled ones he’s best known for. His Paterson is a simple man of simple pleasures, but while most films would mock or sideline him here he’s embraced. In the latest film starring the legendary Frank Langella, his character is confronted with one of the most difficult decisions a person has to face: the acceptance of death. Youth in Oregon, directed by Joel David Moore, follows his character who decides to be legally euthanized and takes a road trip with his son, played by Billy Crudup, to do so. While that may sound like a dour outing, Youth in Oregon looks to delicately inject a lighter tone amongst the darker drama.
With the film now arriving on DVD this week, we’re exclusively premiering the first ten minutes, which introduces our cast and sets up the catalyst for the road trip. We said in our review, “Youth in Oregon ultimately becomes a deeply affecting examination of decisions and goodbyes with a lasting final impact.” Also starring Christina Applegate, Josh Lucas, and Mary Kay Place, check out the clip below.

Much like I seem to find myself saying around this point each and every single year…time really flies. Believe it or not, we’re now a full three months into the 2017 movie calendar, which means we’re literally a quarter of the way through the film slate for the year. Wow. That got me thinking about what the best of the bunch so far this year has been. Since now is the time when the film slate begins to transition into summer releases and counter programming independent fare ramps up, I thought it was the perfect time to praise the best of 2017 so far. Basically, anything that hit screens between January 1st and March 31st will be up for grabs here for my personal honors. Once again, here goes nothing! So far, 2017 has been on the weaker side of things, at least in my humble opinion. There’s been a few legitimately great films,...

Billy Crudup appeared in two Oscar-nominated films in 2016 — “Jackie” and “20th Century Women” — but he also appeared in the family drama “Youth in Oregon” opposite the Tony Award-winning actor Frank Langella. In the film, Langella stars as the 79-year-old curmudgeon Raymond who makes arrangements to be euthanized in Oregon, but his family refuses to accept his decision. When another family emergency arises, Raymond’s daughter’s husband Brian (Billy Crudup) ends up driving Raymond and his wife Estelle (Mary Kay Place) 3,000 miles to Oregon, but soon Brian tries to convince the old man to give life another chance. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

“I Am Not Your Negro” (Magnolia), Raoul Peck’s acclaimed documentary on author James Baldwin, opened extremely well this weekend to achieve an elevated position among this year’s Oscar Documentary Features. It also defied the usual strategy for specialized releases, documentary or otherwise, with a wider that usual first week opening.
It joins the Iranian “The Salesman” as a perfectly timed late-stage release. Asghar Faradi’s film expanded in its second weekend to about the same number of theaters showing “Negro.” They stand out as fresh blood in a period when multiple longer running Oscar nominees are still thriving, including a rare trifecta of three Best Picture nominees in the Top Ten: “Hidden Figures,” “La La Land” and “Lion.”

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
A Bigger Splash (Luca Guadagnino)
Despite a loose script that justifies little, Italian director Luca Guadagnino’s follow-up feature to his glorious melodrama I Am Love is a sweaty, kinetic, dangerously unpredictable ride of a film. One is frustrated by the final stroke of genius that never came, but boy was it fun to spend two hours inside such a whirlwind of desires, mind games, delirious sights and sounds.

Ahoy folks! With the Academy Awards still a couple of weeks away, we can momentarily take a breather and look at something else for the day. What is that, you might ask? Well, today is a look at what else theaters will have playing throughout this month, besides the obvious Oscar hopefuls and leftover prestige movies. I do this every single month, as you all must know by now, so of course I won’t exclude February. Much like with January, this month gets a bad reputation as one of the worst for new releases, and while that’s often been well founded, if you look closely enough this month you can find some very solid cinematic options. Consider this list another public service for those of you who have seen all of the Oscar contenders and nominees already. You might even find a gem or two amongst the junk…...

Do not be fooled — Youth in Oregon is a drama through and through. While some of its marketing may suggest a more comedic tone, Joel David Moore’s directorial choices, combined with the film’s poignant — if often scattered — thematic musings are centered on heavy drama. Unfortunately, the first two-thirds of Youth feel like a war between Moore’s aesthetic sensibilities and the thematic tonal balancing act attempted by the script penned by first-time writer Andrew Eisen. I would argue that the ideal presentation of a “dramedy” is combining genuine humor with emotional weight in the same beat. If a storyteller can blend them organically — accentuating the impact of both by contrast — they have succeeded. By this definition, Youth in Oregon is not a successful dramedy. Instead, its first two-thirds feel like a drama and an occasional comedy, separately, each existing on their own plane and rarely passing each other by with a wave.

In Christina Applegate's latest film, Youth in Oregon, she plays the adult daughter of a man who plans a road trip to Oregon to make use of the state's Death with Dignity Act, a decision that causes his family's past and future to unravel as everyone's own secrets begin to spill out. In real life, though, the 45-year-old actress' day-to-day sounds increasingly normal.
"Not much to report over here. Making kid breakfast, working out, now going to go pick her up and take her to ballet," Applegate rattled off on a recent Monday during a phone call with Et. "You know, the uzh. My uzh." In addition to her new movie (in select theaters and available On Demand on Feb. 3), the wide-ranging conversation also covered Bad Moms, the recent Women's March and the fact that it has been 30 years since she first donned one of Kelly Bundy's mini-dresses on Married... with Children.

Here at Et, we’re obsessed with a lot of things -- and for the week of Jan. 30 to Feb. 5, this is what we’re most excited about:
‘Arrival’
Five-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams was shamefully snubbed for what many consider to be her best performance yet as translator Louise Banks in this film about an alien invasion that pushes humanity to its brink. “It was one of my favorite scripts that I've ever read. It got me right away and it became one of those that I had to do," Adams explained ahead of Arrival’s theatrical release. Of course, the film’s standout performances are not limited to Adams, who shares the screen with Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker, both of whom added gravitas to this sci-fi drama.

I'm always impressed by Frank Langella, he's an excellent actor, and it's nice to see him in interesting roles like this. If fellow critic David Ehrlich says it's a highlight of Langella's career, maybe this is worth seeing. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Joel David Moore's Youth in Oregon,...

Lloyd Kaufman is among one of the most prolific pioneers of indie films, co-founding Troma Entertainment with Michael Herz in 1974. Giving audiences a variety of low-budget teenage sex comedies and arthouse horror films over the past decades, his latest movie, “Return to Return to Nuke ‘Em High aka Volume 2,” is a continuation of his 2013 explosive feature “Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1.”
Troma Entertainment has released the new Nsfw uncensored trailer for the upcoming “splatstick” horror comedy, check it out below.
The film tells the story of Lauren and Chrissy, two lesbian lovers who must face and defeat the most corrupt and evil forces ever to descend upon Tromaville…and the world! The pitch “Frank Langella road trips with son-in-law Billy Crudup to get legally euthanized in Oregon” doesn’t exactly conjure up images of hilarity, but director Joel David Moore seems to have found a way to inject humor into the foundation of his latest feature, Youth in Oregon. Off a script from first-time writer Andrew Eisen, Youth in Oregon looks to straddle that line of comedy and drama that birthed the phrase dramedy.
Coupled with a slew of festival banners, the first trailer demonstrates that tonal balancing act attempted by Moore, one which will either pay off with an emotional but ultimately rousing experience, or a thematically inconsistent experience. See the trailer below, along with a synopsis and poster, for the film that also stars Christina Applegate, Josh Lucas, and Mary Kay Place.
When 79-year-old curmudgeon Raymond (Frank Langella) makes arrangements to be euthanized in Oregon, his family refuses to accept his decision.

The dysfunctional-family road trip plays out in a decidedly minor key in Youth in Oregon, a drama that struggles to breathe life into its death-themed narrative. As the ailing and deeply unhappy octogenarian who sets his sites on assisted suicide, Frank Langella finds nuance in material that ranges from on-the-nose to clumsy, and Christina Applegate’s performance as his daughter hits true notes beneath the cacophonous surface. But mainly the fractured clan at the center of the feature is not great cross-country company.

Just weeks after it was confirmed that Batman v Superman star Ray Fisher will return as Cyborg in Warner Bros.' The Flash, Warner Bros. is in talks with Billy Crudup to join the cast. If a deal comes together the actor will portray Dr. Henry Allen, the father of Ezra Miller's Barry Allen. This would mark Billy Crudup's return to the DC world, having played Dr. Manhattan in Warner Bros.' 2009 comic book adaptation Watchmen.
Variety broke the news today, although this report doesn't include any details about how this character may be different from both the comics and the hit TV series. Being able to sympathetically cope with the increasing emotional and physical turmoil that harrowingly begins to plague an already sentimentally distant family after a member learns of their grim prognosis is a challenge that not everyone is able to take on. What happens when your father decides that it’s time to end it all, that he’s tired of causing you and your family so much grief and pain, that he himself is tired of suffering and just wants, well, to die?
The implications of Youth in Oregon is far greater than what’s seen on screen.
Written by first time writer Andrew Eisen, the film brings us on a poignantly sadistic journey as we see Raymond Engersol (played by Frank Langella) suffering from some unknown illness as he tries to convince his daughter Kate Gleason (Christina Applegate) and son-in-law Brian (Billy Crudup) that they should let him commit assisted suicide, or euthanasia, in Oregon.
Well that’s a mouthful. While director Joel David Moore has been acting since the late ’90s and has racked up an impressive resume of films and series, this is his second directorial feature, but it’s hard to tell.
