Blumhouse TV Hires Melissa Aouate as President
Image
Blumhouse TV has finally found its new president: Melissa Aouate of Fabel Entertainment.

Aouate replaces Chris McCumber, the former USA Network executive who left the role in October 2023. Jason Gold, the president of production at Blumhouse TV, took on the role in the interim.

Blumhouse TV’s unscripted department will continue to be overseen by Gretchen Palek, its head of alternative television, the company said on Thursday. Rob Hackett continues as the head of television for Atomic Monster, which operates as its own label within Blumhouse. (Jason Blum’s Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster merged in 2024, creating a safe haven for horror — if there could be such a thing. The two labels had previously worked together on Insidious, M3GAN, and Night Swim.)

Blumhouse TV produces the recently-released The Bondsman starring Kevin Bacon and the upcoming Scarpetta series starring Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis for Amazon Prime Video.

Incredible Western TV Shows Canceled After 1 Season
Image
The Western genre may not be as popular as it once was, especially on television, but that doesn't mean there aren't great stories still being told on the medium. Popular Western shows like Deadwood and Justified were consistently thrilling and garnered many fans in the process. On the other hand, there are stellar Western shows that have fallen under the radar because they only lasted one season.

Whether because of low ratings, an inability to find a larger audience or the narrative told everything it needed to, these series were axed after their sole season. Regardless if the shows originated in the modern era or before the 21st century, they remain a welcoming treat for Western genre fans. From cult classics like Firefly to underrated miniseries like The Good Lord Bird, these Western shows provided amazing storytelling in a single season.

Quick Links The Kid Tells a Fictional Story With Real Historical Figures Who Does Ethan Hawke Play in The Kid? Ethan Hawke Isn't the Only Marvel Star Featured in The Kid

Ever since Sinister revitalized his career in mainstream studio films in 2012, Ethan Hawke has taken art in quite a wide array of projects, not just in acting, but even writing, producing, and directing. In that time, he earned two more Oscar nominations, directed his daughter Maya Hawke in the biopic drama Wildcat, and even joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a role in the miniseries Moon Knight. He's also taken on quite an interest in the Western genre, starring in such titles as In a Valley of Violence, the Showtime miniseries The Good Lord Bird, and even the 2016 remake of The Magnificent Seven. There was another western he starred in, however, that tragically has gotten more overlooked than it deserves to be.

Will ‘Shōgun’ break ‘Game of Thrones’ Emmy record for most drama wins in same year? Here’s the FX drama’s path to history …
Image
In 2015, “Game of Thrones” set a record for winning the most Primetime Emmy Awards for a drama series in a single year, with 12. The HBO juggernaut was able to repeat that feat in 2016 and 2019, but was never able to win more than a dozen trophies in one season. This year, a brand new series from FX looks poised to break that record, as “Shōgun” leads all contenders with 25 nominations.

“Shōgun,” based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village. The FX series created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks premiered on February 27, 2024 and the season finale aired April 23, 2024. It is currently available to stream on Hulu.

With the Western genre having made a remarkable comeback on television in recent years, there's a new and much wider selection of shows to choose from. While the miniseries continues to be mostly overlooked by television audiences, it received high amounts of acclaim, even garnering a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination. It's one of those Westerns that,...

After Powell is arrested for stealing a car (from one of his brides-turned-victims), his cellmate is Ben Harper, who's on death row for armed robbery/homicide. Harper hid the stolen money in his daughter Pearl's doll, intending it to be her and his son John's birthright, and took that secret to his grave. Exclusive: Natasha Marc will reprise her role as Cherry in Season 3 of Paramount+’s Mayor of Kingstown. Marc made her last appearance in the ninth episode of Season 1 titled “The Lie of the Truth.”

Co-created by Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family, power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry. Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality, the series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.

In Season 3, a series of explosions rock Kingstown and its citizens, as a new face of the Russian mob sets up shop in the city, and a drug war rages inside and outside prison walls. The pressure is on Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) to end the war but things get complicated when a familiar face from his...

Ethan Hawke Is a Badass Abolitionist in This War Western Series
Image
Ethan Hawke's portrayal of militant abolitionist John Brown in The Good Lord Bird is a quite impressive for several reasons. He is loud, commanding, and imbued with a sense of righteousness we haven't seen as much in Hawke's previous roles. The intensity of his performance stands apart from his most recent appearance as the kindly father in Netflix's Leave the World Behind, a more mellowed out, live-and-let-live character. He is as far as can be from the reserved yet deeply psychotic masked murderer he plays in The Black Phone, where his indifference to life and self-deluded hatred stand in marked contrast from the wild and deeply moral abolitionist in Showtime's Western series.

Where Was Harriet Filmed? The Biopic's Filming Locations Explained
Image
Filming locations for the biopic Harriet were carefully chosen to recreate the 19th-century American East Coast, with Virginia serving as the backdrop for various scenes. Three Lakes Park in Henrico, Virginia, provided the perfect setting for forest scenes in the film, including Tubman guiding enslaved people on the Underground Railroad and scouting for the Union Army. The historical Berkeley Plantation in Charles City, Virginia, was used as the exterior of Senator William Seward's New York home in the film, highlighting its relevance to the story and its involvement in the Civil War.

The 2019 biopic Harriet tells the story of abolitionist Harriet Tubman, and, picking up in 1849 Maryland, filmmakers had to get creative with the project's filming locations. The scenery throughout the film needed to believably look like the 19th-century American East Coast, which meant utilizing modern locations that looked to be pulled straight out of history. Ultimately, this meant...

Where Have You Seen Loki Season 2's X-5 Actor Before?
Image
This post contains spoilers for the season premiere of "Loki."

"Loki" is back this week, and along with the return of Norse trickster god Loki (Tom Hiddleston), agent Mobius (Owen Wilson), and the rest of the Time Variance Authority, the show's premiere also sees the introduction of a few new key characters. Among them? Ke Huy Quan's helpful, tech-savvy Ouroboros (or O.B.) and X-5, a mysterious new Tva agent played by Rafael Casal. And it's the latter who is particularly intriguing.

So far, we haven't seen X-5 do much besides question whether jet skis are part of the sacred timeline, but the character already seems to be an agitating force within the organization. He's also quite possibly poised to become a recognizable Marvel villain. After all, a featurette for the second season had a couple bits of footage from behind the scenes that showed him in a Tva jumpsuit,...

How Reservation Dogs Season 3 Made Its Biggest Cameo Yet A Reality
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Reservation Dogs season 3 episode 9.

Ethan Hawke appeared as Elora's father Rick on the most recent episode of Reservation Dogs. The casting director of Reservation Dogs reveals that getting Hawke for a major cameo in season 3 was a surprisingly easy process. Hawke was already interested in working with the show's co-creator Sterlin Harjo.

The casting director for Reservation Dogs explains how they got their most recent major cameo. The series, which premiered in 2021, follows teens from the Muscogee Nation who live in small-town Oklahoma. After Elora (Devery Jacobs) learned that her father Rick was alive at the beginning of season 3, the episodes have built toward a potential reunion that came to pass in the most recent episode, "Elora's Dad." All that buildup led to a huge cameo, as it turns out Rick is played by Before Sunrise and The Black Phone star Ethan Hawke.

Maya Hawke Addresses Nepo Baby Criticisms: ‘I Had Moments of Insecurity’
Image
Stranger Things star Maya Hawke opened up about how the "nepo baby" criticisms have affected her while working with father Ethan Hawke on their latest project together.

The subject of "nepo babies" in Hollywood has been a sensitive topic to certain actors who belong to famous families, while some also try to poke fun at it. One of the young actors being dubbed as a "nepo baby" is Maya Hawke, who’s the eldest daughter of former A-list couple Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke. She first gained recognition for her breakout role as Robin Buckley in Stranger Things. Despite only joining the cast in Season 3, she quickly became a fan-favorite due to her character’s cleverness, sarcasm and reliability.

Ethan Hawke ‘Couldn’t Care Less’ About Directing Maya Hawke’s ‘Wildcat’ Sex Scenes
Image
Ethan Hawke has no problem with daughter Maya Hawke doing sex scenes.

Ethan directs Maya in upcoming Flannery O’Connor biopic “Wildcat,” which premiered at Telluride. Maya plays the author as well as six other characters in O’Connor’s short stories, some of which include sex scenes.

Ethan told Variety that he had no hesitation directing Maya in those moments, which co-starred Rafael Casal and Cooper Hoffman. To note, the cast of “Wildcat” received a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement to promote the film amid the ongoing strike.

“We needed to take care of Rafael and Cooper,” Ethan said. “I think it was weird for them. We were so comfortable with it. I couldn’t care less.”

Maya added, “We made sure to have an intimacy coordinator on set for them. So that they felt safe and comfortable and not like they were being spied on…” to which Ethan said,...

Like Father, Like Daughter: Ethan and Maya Hawke on Nepo Babies, Their New Movie ‘Wildcat’ and Being the ‘Indie Kardashians’
Image
It’s a rainy day in New York City, and Maya Hawke is telling me about her short-lived attempt to call her father ‘Ethan’ on the set of their new film, “Wildcat.” We’re escaping the downpour at a cozy neighborhood restaurant in Chelsea, and sitting across from the striking father-daughter duo is like having a front-row seat to the royal family of art-house cinema.

“I started using his name — ‘Ethan’ — to be like, ‘I’m a professional,’” the 25-year-old “Stranger Things” actress says. “And then I realized it was actually more distracting to people. They’d be like, ‘Why are you doing that?’ So I mostly called him ‘Dad.’”

Such is life when you’re a Gen Z “It” girl whose father is a Gen X icon. But there’s very little celebrity polish to the pair when we meet in the dog days of August. Maya, who has...
