Michael Shannon and Judy Greer first collaborated when they were cast in the sweet homage to small town living “Pottersville” in 2017. They would meet up in an episode of the Duplass brothers’ anthology series “Room 104” again as actors. But in Shannon’s feature film directorial debut, “Eric Larue,” Shannon is stepping behind the camera to guide Greer.
Brett Neveu adapted his 2002 stage play for the film, which centers on Janice (Greer), the mother of a school shooter, in the aftermath of the act. Struggling to visit her son and managing the fallout in the community, Greer delivers a powerful tour-de-force for the actor best known for her work in comedies. It’s also a departure for Shannon, who once swore he would never direct for film.

Ron Perlman has had a remarkable career. His first film was an Oscar winner (Quest for Fire) from a great director; later that decade, he'd win a Golden Globe for the TV series Beauty and the Beast. He's been in everything from big franchise movies and international arthouse films to indie horror and numerous classics with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. But when MovieWeb spoke with Perlman about his new film with Liam Neeson, Absolution, he surprised us when he named the film in his career that he's the proudest of — and it's one hardly anybody has seen.
"I had a production company for about five or six years called Wing and a Prayer Pictures, and I produced about nine movies," explained Perlman. He continued:
"And the first one we identified was called Asher, and it was actually the last movie we produced. It was the movie that killed the company.

The final movie in Sony Pictures' animated Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, was originally set to swing into theaters on March 29, 2024 before being taken off the calendar last July, and the studio has yet to announce a new release date.
Last night, we learned that Marvel/Sony are moving full steam ahead on Spider-Man 4 with Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton at the helm, but this may have resulted in Beyond the Spider-Verse being pushed back yet again.
Jeff Sneider (via Toonado.com) believes there's a chance the threequel may not be with us until 2027 after being taken back to the drawing board.
According to the reliable insider, "creative differences" have led to "most of the movie being scrapped." We don't need to tell you how much work goes into an animated feature of this scale, so if this report is accurate, 2027 might even be an ambitious estimate!

“Eric Larue” is the directorial debut of actor Michael Shannon. He’s only behind the camera this time. The aftermath tale of a young boy’s shooting rampage deals straight ahead with the families of the people affected. An often light and breezy costar of rom-coms, Judy Greer here delivers a powerhouse leading performance. She’s had films at Tribeca before, but she’s chatting with us this week from Chicago where she’s on stage in “Another Marriage” at the Steppenwolf. She’s candid, funny and has real affection for the new director. And she says it’s never too early to think about awards season. But we begin with her downtown New York professional roots.
Judy Greer: I was actually at the first Tribeca Film Festival. I was shooting a movie in New York at the time. They were all finished cleaning up the wreckage after 9/11 in downtown...

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

Netflix has released the trailer for Yes Day. This is one of the many original movies that the streaming service has coming down the pipeline in 2021. With theaters still not showing much in the way of new material, Netflix is capitalizing by offering its subscribers plenty on that front. In this case, we have a family-friendly comedy starring Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez. They play parents who, instead of saying no to their kids, decide to say yes. To anything. As one might expect, it gets a little hectic.
The trailer opens with several instances where Allison and Carlos, played by Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez, have to tell their kids no, as they are causing small-scale chaos in the household. Fireworks. Explosive messes. It all results in a lot of "no." The couple finds that their children view them as fun killers, which leads them to reminisce about their...

Most fans and critics agree that Die Hard is one of the most influential and greatest action movies that Hollywood has ever produced. But a section of the fandom will also swear that it is one of the best Christmas movies of all time. The question of whether or not Die Hard qualifies as a Christmas flick has led to many lively debates online. Now, the director of the movie John McTiernan has offered his expertise on the topic. In a video for AFI, McTiernan revealed how the original premise for Die Hard was vastly different from what the movie ended up becoming.

The opening few minutes of Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Monster Hunter” are such a delightful eruption of unfettered, goofy-ass, who-cares-what-your-parents-think nerdcore that it seems as if the director of 1995’s “Mortal Kombat” (and the “Resident Evil” series after that) has reset video game movies back to the good old days when they weren’t bogged down by delusions of respectability — when they were memorably bad instead of just dull or “Assassin’s Creed.” If only.
The “Monster Hunter” franchise, which might be helpful for neophytes to think of as the Pepsi to Pokémon’s Coke, has always stood out for its high fantasy trappings, and boy oh boy does Anderson embrace those in a big way right out of the gate. We open on a hilariously self-important quote about “new worlds” that are hidden “behind the perception of our senses” as Paul Haslinger’s glitch-pop score blares in the background, and that’s an excellent start.

The Orchard has acquired the North American rights to “State Like Sleep,” starring Michael Shannon and Katherine Waterston, the distributor announced Thursday.
Meredith Danluck wrote and directed the hypnotic drama, her first narrative feature, and Eddie Vaisman, Julia Lebedev and Angel Lopez produced.
Luke Evans and Michiel Huisman also star, and The Orchard is planning a theatrical release as well as a digital release this winter. It first premiered in April at the Tribeca Film Festival.

“The Shape of Water” was nominated for seven Golden Globes, but Michael Shannon was nowhere near the ballroom where the film he co-stars in was being honored. Instead, he was in Chicago as part of Sons of the Silent Age’s tribute to David Bowie’s Berlin trilogy. What was he doing there? Why, honoring what would have been Bowie’s 71st birthday by performing as Iggy Pop, of course. Watch below.

Michael Shannon has honored his late co-star, Sam Shepard, by recording the audiobook to Shepard’s final work of fiction. On December 5, Knopf Doubleday will release “Spy of the First Person,” the story of a nearly-immobilized man who looks back on his life while undergoing medical testing.
Shepard died of Als complications in July at age 73, leaving behind a legacy that includes more than 60 film roles and 55 penned plays. “Buried Child” won him the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1979; five years later, Shepard earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for “The Right Stuff.”

If December is a relatively quiet month for Netflix, perhaps that’s because they want you to spend the holidays scaling the seemingly infinite mountain of content they’ve released this year. Good luck with that. But the streaming giant’s latest batch of new releases, however scarce, offer a wild variety of things to see. From an under-the-radar family drama that some critics believe is the best movie the year, to a demented Michael Shannon Christmas movie that some critics don’t even believe is a real thing, these are the seven best films coming to Netflix this December.

Okay, so “Pottersville” is a very, very bad movie. It still wouldn’t really be one of the seven best movies coming to Netflix this month if there were only six movies coming to Netflix this month.

Holiday episodes are rarely a show’s best, but they’re often the most enduring. CBS still airs a colorized version of the “I Love Lucy” Christmas episode, repackaged as a perennial special, 60 years later. The image of The Fonz eating out of a can, alone on Christmas Eve, is probably one of the best-remembered scenes from “Happy Days.” And “The West Wing’s” 1999 episode “In Excelsis Deo” not only won an Emmy, but its takes on homeless veterans and hate crimes are just as relevant today, nearly two decades later. And of course, it was a Christmas episode that launched the longest-running scripted series in primetime, “The Simpsons,” all the way back in 1989.
As the networks more wholeheartedly embrace the holidays as a marketing tool, there has been an explosion in Christmas-themed movies and specials in recent years. But there’s still something special about celebrating the holidays with...

“Wonder” is as manipulative as movies get, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes a story needs to steer you; sometimes a story tells you what to feel, but redeems itself by virtue of the sincerity with which it shows why you should feel that way. In much the same way that fables and fairy tales exist to making a particular point, subtlety would be counterintuitive to the very nature of what this film is trying to do. And really, no one should be expecting Chekhov from an inspirational tear-jerker about a deformed little kid whose parents are played by Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson.
As generous as it is linear (and only emotionally pornographic towards the end), “Wonder” may be manipulative, but it’s also instructive. It’s a how-to guide for kindness — a good lesson for kids, and a helpful reminder for adults. It’s not...

The past week has seen some truly wacky trailers arrive. Michael Shannon becomes Bigfoot in “Pottersville,” Brie Larson travels to India for wacky adventures in “Basmati Blues,” and now Al Pacino becomes the inspiration for Evan Peters to put his life in danger in “The Pirates Of Somalia.”
One of those random Pacino movies we didn’t know existed until the arrival of a trailer, this one is based on the non-fiction book “The Pirates of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World” by Jay Bahadur, which tells the story of a young journalist who is so inspired by his hero, he moves to Somalia to try and get the story of a lifetime.

“Daddy’s Home 2” isn’t sorry. It doesn’t care about your stupid feelings. Don’t remember what happened at the end of the last movie, or which home belongs to which daddy? Too bad. Don’t want your festive family comedies to star Mel Gibson as a serial womanizer with a flair for violence? Don’t understand how Will Ferrell could re-team with Mark Wahlberg when a sequel to “Step Brothers” is possibly the only thing that could pull civilization back from the brink? Get in line.

Here’s the only plausible explanation for “Pottersville,” a nearly unwatchable — but inexplicably star-studded — new Christmas comedy which is making a brief pitstop in select theaters before spending the rest of eternity in the storage room of your local Walmart: A veteran producer at the Hallmark Channel was at the end of his rope (for the purposes of this hypothetical scenario, let’s pretend said producer was “Pottersville” director Seth Henrikson, whose sparse IMDb credits leave plenty to the imagination). Frustrated by a career spent churning out festive — and weirdly horny — shlock like “A Very Merry Mix-Up,” “Matchmaker Santa” (featuring Lacey Chabert), and “A Boyfriend for Christmas” (the story of an infatuated girl who wastes her 20s waiting for Santa Claus to come down her chimney), he finally broke.

An amiable misfire that (for better or worse) isn't quite as nutty as it sounds, Seth Henrikson's Pottersville pairs Yuletide cheer with the deviance of the Furry scene and an out-of-control hoax involving an ersatz Bigfoot. The feature debut for both Henrikson and screenwriter Daniel Meyer, it has attracted a top-shelf cast that presumably saw something in the source material that didn't quite come through in execution. Topliners including Michael Shannon and Christina Hendricks will likely be good for some clicks once the pic segues into streaming platforms.

We seem to be hitting a moment of seeing great actors doing projects that are a bit below their pay scale. First there was Michael Shannon and the Bigfoot comedy “Pottersville,” and now there’s Brie Larson with the wacky comedy of cultural misunderstandings in “Basmati Blues.”
The directorial debut of someone named Dan Baron, the film also stars Donald Sutherland (!), Scott Bakula (!!) and Tyne Daly (!!!) and tells the story of a scientist who goes to India to promote genetically modified rice to farmers, and learns the negative impacts it will have on their land and way of life.

The time has come for Michael Shannon to star in a Christmas-themed comedy. You probably never thought you’d live to see this day, but it’s here at last, in all its glory. In the new film Pottersville, Shannon leads a surprisingly strong cast in a film that seems like it’s some sort of elaborate leg-pull, but […]

If you want to see Michael Shannon do some fun lighthearted Christmas comedy, we've got a trailer for his new film Pottersville that you have to see. This is definitely a different kind of role for Shannon, who mostly plays serious and dramatic characters. The guy is a great actor and it's kinda cool and interesting to see him make a movie like this where he plays a guy who dresses up in a gorilla costume and is mistaken for the legendary Bigfoot.
It may not look like the greatest movie in the world, but it does have an impressive supporting cast that includes Judy Greer, Tom Lennon, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks, and Ian McShane. With a cast like that, I'm excited! Here's the synopsis:
Its a long cold winter in Pottersville, and struggling store owner Maynard (Shannon) is hit by hard times. During a late-night drunken wander through town,...

You might be thinking to yourself that even the great Michael Shannon has to do a paycheck gig now and then. After all, it seems the only plausible explanation for why he’d appear in the cheap looking, wacky comedy “Pottersville,” right? Well, he’s also the executive producer, so let that sink in for a moment.
Somehow, director Seth Henrikson managed not only to rope in Shannon, but also Judy Greer, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman, and Ian McShane for his feature debut, about a man who is mistaken for Bigfoot, causing a lucrative, media hyped frenzy in his otherwise unassuming, small town.

"It's a magical life." Echo Bridge has debuted an official trailer for a small-town holiday comedy film titled Pottersville. This looks like the wackiest, straight-to-cable-tv Christmas comedy in, well, a long time. The only reason we're featuring it here is because it actually has an interesting cast. Michael Shannon stars as a struggling shop owner who is mistaken for Bigfoot when stumbling around drunk late one night. This brings attention to the town, in turn helping the local businesses. The rest of the cast includes Judy Greer, Tom Lennon, Ron Perlman, Christina Hendricks, and Ian McShane. I honestly don't even want to suggest watching this trailer, but at least it won't take up more than two minutes of your time. Try to enjoy. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Seth Henrikson's Pottersville, direct from YouTube: It's a long cold winter in Pottersville, and struggling store owner Maynard (Michael Shannon) is hit by hard times.

Michael Shannon can easily be described as Hollywood’s secret weapon. He’s a reliable working actor whose versatility onscreen has seen him emerge from Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor to appear opposite Eminem in 8 Mile, earn an Oscar nomination in Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s highly anticipated onscreen reunion Revolutionary Road and walk away unscathed from Man of Steel, in which he played the critically panned blockbuster’s main baddie, General Zod. He’s repeatedly worked with directors that include Jeff Nichols, Liza Johnson, Michael Bay, Siofra Campbell and Werner Herzog.
In fact, Vulture even gave him that title in 2016 when he was promoting the back-to-back releases of Nocturnal Animals, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting actor, and Loving, the latter of which most fans probably didn’t even realize he was in until the actor suddenly appeared onscreen as a photographer who captures the story of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred...

For almost twenty years, Judy Greer has been one of the busiest actresses in every medium, whether it’s appearing in popular comedies like 13 Going on 30, Oscar fare like Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, or even unrecognizable as the ape Cornelia in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and its upcoming sequel. Maybe Greer’s largest pop came when she was cast to play Will Arnett’s cross-eyed secretary Kitty Sanchez in Mitch Hurwitz’s popular show Arrested Development, and for the past few years, she’s also provided the voices for a couple characters on the popular animated show Archer.
Either way, it’s unlikely you haven’t seen Greer in hundreds of movies or TV shows over the years, as she keeps very, very busy, and yet somehow, despite that busy schedule, Greer has found time to put together a book and make her directorial debut with a comedy starring Common.
