Image
Ryan Murphy’s latest installment in the “Monster” anthology series has been called “exploitative” by some fans, criticizing the portrayal of the sexual abuse experienced by the Menendez brothers.

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” follows the murder case that captivated America’s attention in the 90s. While the two brothers are still serving time behind bars, recent discoveries about their music executive father’s inappropriate behavior have led to a more nuanced inspection of their claims of sexual abuse.

While showrunners Murphy and Ian Brennan’s portrayal of the brothers dips a toe into incest territory, the following documentaries provide a glimpse into the real events that inspired the campy, Murphy reimagining.

Here are the seven documentaries you should watch after finishing “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Reaps Ratings Rewards In Move To NBC
Dirk Blocker, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Joel McKinnon Miller, Andy Samberg, and Stephanie Beatriz in Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
NBC clocked its best comedy demo rating of the season importing Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.2 demo rating; 3.56 million total viewers) from Fox.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine jumped 71% over its year ago season debut in the demo, 82% in total viewers. Thursday’s NBC debut marked the series best ratings of the past two years.

The Andy Samberg starrer benefited from its Titan Games lead-in, which retained 94% of previous week’s 8-9 Pm demo rating, doubling network’s season average in that slot.

Following Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place scored its best stats since early October.

At 10 Pm, Law & Order: Svu clocked a 14% bump relative to its fall finale, but was no match for CBS’s S.W.A.T, which matched its season high.

CBS’ The Big Bang Theory was, as usual, king of comedy – and of Thursday night – bagging its biggest crowd of season to date and second best in the demo.
