Back in 1831, author Victor Hugo brought the world the novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, telling the 1482-set story of Quasimodo, a deformed fellow who served as the bell-ringer of at the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Nearly two hundred years later, versions of Hugo’s story are still being told on a regular basis – with the most recent adaptation being a film that’s set up at the Netflix streaming service. Deadline reports that Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) is set to play the title character in Quasimodo, which has Jean-François Richet attached to direct.
Richet may be best known for his work on action films like Plane, Blood Father, and the Assault on Precinct 13 remake, but he has also directed multiple dramas, the crimes films Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1, the period adventure film The Emperor of Paris, and the comedy One Wild Moment, a version of...

It may have been steamrolled by critics, but Jason Statham's Expend4bles is throwing haymakers on streaming again. The fourth and final installment in the testosterone-fueled Expendables franchise has bulldozed its way back into the Starz top 10 in the last week, and it's all thanks to the unexpected ripple effect of Statham’s newest theatrical hit, A Working Man. Despite debuting with a bruising 14% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, the loud and brash 2023 action thriller has proven once again that audience taste doesn’t always line up with critical consensus. Expend4bles currently holds a far more respectable 69% audience rating, and fans are clearly hungry for more Statham mayhem while revisiting his most recent (and most explosive) team-up with Megan Fox, Dolph Lundgren, and Tulsa King’s own Sylvester Stallone.
Expend4bles first dropped in 2023 to grim reviews and a whimper at the box office, seemingly putting a nail in the franchise’s coffin.

Dope Thief showrunner Peter Craig has quietly been one of Hollywood’s go-to writers for crime drama the last 15 years.
In 2010, Craig transitioned from a crime novelist to an in-demand screenwriter thanks to his co-writing credit on Ben Affleck’s crime thriller The Town. Craig then showed his versatility by adapting Suzanne Collins’ Mockingjay into The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and Part 2, before bringing his own crime novel, Blood Father, to the big screen in 2016. Since then, he’s collected a co-writing credit on Bad Boys for Life, as well as story credits on Top Gun: Maverick and Gladiator II. But he’s always returned to his bread and butter in the crime genre, most notably as the co-writer of Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

The Beekeeper star Jason Statham continues to fly the flag for wonderfully no-nonsense action movie fare, and his next movie, the Jean-François Richet directed Mutiny, has now been given a release date. Sadly, it’s going to be a little while before we catch The Stath’s next violent vendetta.
As per a report by Deadline, Mutiny will land in theaters next year on January 9, 2026, with Lionsgate putting Statham’s latest action thriller up against Universal’s M3GAN spin-off Soulm8te, which releases the week before on January 2. Other than that, the path is clear for Mutiny to make a killing at the box office on its opening weekend.
Mutiny sees Statham in the role as both star and producer as he joins forces with the director behind 2023’s Gerard Butler-led Plane, Jean-François Richet, with the action outing finding The Mechanic star on the run while uncovering a major global conspiracy.

Jean-François Richet, the screenwriter, filmmaker and producer behind some of France’s boldest thrillers such as “Mesrine” starring Vincent Cassel, has signed with CAA.
Richet made a splash with his feature debut, “Inner City” (“Etat des lieux”), which was set against the backdrop of a crime-ridden project and scored a César Award nomination. Richet went on direct “Ma 6-t va crack-er” and “Assault on Precinct 13,” a pair of thought-provoking films which also depicted gang violence. His biggest success is the sprawling two-part thriller “Mesrine” with Cassel playing the ruthless, yet charismatic gangster Jacques Mesrine. Richet won best director at Cesar Awards for “Mesrine.” He also directed Mel Gibson in “Blood Father” which played at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016.
The filmmaker has now launched the production vehicle Public Enemy and looks to produce six genre films per year.
He recently helmed the action thriller “Plane,” starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter.

Erin Moriarty transcended into popularity with her flawless portrayal of Starlight in Eric Kripke’s The Boys. However, the actress has been chastised by her fans for alleged plastic surgery; they showed no remorse as they relentlessly trolled her following some of her recent photos that surfaced online.

Earlier in 2024, she had gone to war with Megyn Kelly, who had criticized Moriarty for her alleged facial transformation. Though the actress expects to face backlash from her fans when she makes changes to her appearance, she did not expect the trolling would be to this degree.
However, the Blood Father actress also did not expect that the real ones would come to her support on her birthday, as they showered her with overwhelmingly positive comments on social media that have got her glowing again!

Mel Gibson's 2022 thriller On the Line hit Netflix's US Top 10 chart despite being previously overlooked. Gibson's star power likely contributed to the film's success on the streaming service despite negative reviews. The movie's concise length and possibly its ending have fueled its newfound popularity.

Lionsgate has nabbed global distribution for “Flight Risk,” an action-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Mel Gibson. This will mark the first film Gibson has directed since his blockbuster ($175 million on a $40 million budget) and Oscar-nominated “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2016. The mini-major will be launching the project, featuring Wahlberg as a pilot transporting a dangerous criminal for trial, at Cannes.
“We love the undeniable electric pairing of Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Joe Drake said. “These world-class talents combining for this dynamic, character-driven film will make ‘Flight Risk’ one of the most suspense-filled, must-see events of the year.”
Wahlberg and Gibson have starred in a few projects together, including “Daddy’s Home 2” and last year’s faith-based “Father Stu.” Considering the number of high-concept or true-story action movies Wahlberg has made with director Peter Berg over the last decade, it is a mild surprise that Gibson will be in charge.

While introducing “Radical,” director Christopher Zalla (“Sangre de Mi Sangre”/”Blood of My Blood”) said it was a labor of love. In addition to that, he said it’s a “movie about what happens when kids are empowered.” And while the film definitely explores this in a well-crafted display of filmmaking, it also leaves a bit of a dark shadow in the minds of those allergic to the notion that your mind is all you need to succeed.

If there’s one thing the movies have taught us, it's that the world loves the tale of an inspirational teacher who is working against the odds. From The School Of Rock to Dead Poets Society and Dangerous Minds, they’re an almost constant part of the school curriculum - and if the kids are from a disadvantaged background of some sort or another then that gains extra points with producers. There’s a reason why formulas work and this one is marked: Caution, may make you cry.
Radical is the new kid in this class - and it comes with a Mexican twist. Christopher Zalla’s based-on-a-true–story cockle-warmer was one of this year’s Day One films at Sundance and saw the writer/director return to the festival after his Padre Nuestro (later renamed Sangre De Mi Sangre) won the Grand Jury Prize back in 2007.

Idealistic teachers propel some of the most shamelessly schmaltzy tearjerkers of cinema, but whether we like it or not, we all respond to them at some sincere, emotional level. Christopher Zalla’s resolute crowdpleaser “Radical” is a heart-tugger in the mold of such old-school “inspiring teacher changes everything” tales as “To Sir With Love,” “Dead Poets Society” and even recent Oscar winner “Coda,” with which it shares star Eugenio Derbez. It’s a conventional film with broad audience appeal — watch it without tissues at your own risk — and hits all the expected notes.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing for a film centered on time-honored themes. Based on a true story, Zalla’s script is inspired by a decade-old Wired article titled “A Radical Way of Unleashing a Generation of Geniuses” — the writer of which, Joshua Davis, serves as a producer here. International comedy star Eugenio Derbez has touched down in Utah for the world premiere of his latest dramatic turn in “Radical,” one of the opening night presentations at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
Variety has an exclusive first look at the project, the story of an outside-the-box teacher in a crime-ridden Mexican border town.
The film is directed by Christopher Zalla, who won Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize in 2007 for “Sangre de Mi Sangre.” In the exclusive clip, Derbez can be seen changing the physical layout of a classroom — and removing his own desk — at a hard-knock school known more for discipline than academic encouragement. Already getting pushback from the establishment faculty, Derbez admits he wants to try something different.

If you've gone to the movies over the past few months, you've likely seen a trailer for the new action-thriller "Plane." It inadvertently became a joke not because of anything in the preview per se, but because of its simplistic title revelation. But you know what? Having seen it, not only does the movie live up to its namesake, but it's a surprisingly fun throwback that makes great use of Gerard Butler ("Greenland") and Mike Colter ("Luke Cage").
When a flight to Tokyo in the film is forced to make an emergency landing on a remote island in the Philippines after lightning knocks out the control panels, it leaves Captain Brodie Torrance (Butler) and his flight crew to keep the shaken passengers calm until they can figure out a rescue plan. There's just one problem. Their impromptu runway is on Jolo, a remote island in the Philippines that just so...

Ever since the ’80s, action films have been overwhelmingly basic in concept, execution, and title. So when you hear that the new Gerard Butler film is called “Plane,” you’d be forgiven for thinking that you can run the entire movie through your head in the blink of an eye. Gerard Butler on a plane (check). He’s probably the pilot (check). There’s probably a criminal onboard (check). The film will be a low-flying, B-grade “Air Force One,” with Butler’s windpipe-smashing grizzled lug saving the day in the same way that Harrison Ford’s heroically resourceful chief executive did.
Actually, no.
Butler, in his broken-down-dad-with-a-chip-of-gold-on-his-shoulder mode, does indeed play a commercial airline pilot, Captain Brodie Torrance, who in the early scenes boards a passenger jet that he’s piloting on New Year’s Eve from Singapore (where he’s based) to Tokyo. There is indeed a criminal onboard...

It’s last call for a number of great movies leaving HBO and HBO Max in March. Fortunately, the month is also packed with new movies and shows, but if you were planning to revisit any of the films below, now’s your chance.
The good news is you won’t have to squeeze in any binge-watching – there are no series leaving HBO Max this month, just films. Expiring titles of note include Sam Raimi’s definitive horror films “The Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead 2,” Wes Anderson’s charming coming-of-age romance “Moonrise Kingdom,” the Charlize Theron-led dramedy “Tully,” Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island” starring Pete Davidson, and the musical drama “Dreamgirls,” starring Jennifer Hudson in the role that earned her the Oscar.

The controversial and contentious experiment where Warner Bros. has debuted its 2021 slate of feature films on HBO Max will hit a crescendo in October thanks to the releases of “The Many Saints of Newark” and “Dune” on the streaming platform. Both “Many Saints” producer and co-writer David Chase and “Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve have criticized the corporate decision to release films day-and-date in theaters and via HBO Max, but despite the outcry, the two highly anticipated features lead a massive lineup of acclaimed library movie titles and Emmy Award-winning original series coming to the network in October 2021. Highlights include:

The Sundance Film Festival has always been one of the premiere places for discovery, providing a launching pad for breakout films en route to mainstream acclaim and awards. But oftentimes, the best of Sundance — films that are truly original, fresh, and worthy — go on to smaller victory laps. These are the festival’s hidden gems, and though they might not be getting Oscar nods, they’re just as deserving of our attention. In advance of this year’s virtual fest, we’ve partnered with AMC+ to assemble a varied list of past Sundance stunners. Featuring early films from the likes of Miranda July and the Safdie’s to Spike Lee’s adaptation of a hit Broadway musical, all of these gems are available via AMC+ streaming platform.

Mel Gibson has slowly been mounting a comeback over the last few years, although at this point, his best chance of regaining his former status as one of the biggest stars in the business is a lot more likely to happen on the other side of the camera.
As a director, Gibson has lost none of his visual or storytelling prowess, as evidenced by his last effort Hacksaw Ridge earning $180 million at the box office and picking up six Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Director, where it walked away with wins for Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing.

Winona Ryder has accused Mel Gibson of making anti-gay and anti-semitic comments. The Stranger Things and The Plot Against America star says that Gibson made the comments at a party some years back. This is far from the first time that Gibson has come under fire for such comments, as the actor and director also unleashed a now-infamous anti-semitic rant during a 2006 DUI arrest.
The comments from Winona Ryder were made during a recent interview. Ryder was asked if she has experienced any antisemitism in the industry. The actress, who identifies as Jewish but does not consider herself "religious," says that she and some friends were at a party with Mel Gibson. During a conversation, Gibson made comments that were insensitive to the LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities. Here is what Ryder had to say about it.

With programmers of all sorts seeking alternative programming, old movies become new. “Contagion,” Steven Soderberg’s 2011 pandemic thriller with Matt Damon and Marion Cotillard, remains the biggest catalog title and ranks #1 at FandangoNOW, #3 at Amazon Prime. There are only a handful of other overlaps between the charts, and the lists seem more fluid than the ones limited to current films. And Netflix, which hosts a more limited selection of such titles, has some of the oddest choices popping up on their list.

While Netflix‘s bonkers documentary Tiger King is taking over the world right now, two surprising films are dominating the streaming service’s newly-added Top 10 movie section.
The current #1 film on Netflix is the Mel Gibson-led Blood Father, a thriller about an ex-con reuniting with his estranged 17-year old daughter to help protect her from drug dealers seeking to end her life. The pic didn’t fare too well at the box office, bringing in just under $7,000,000 worldwide against its estimated $13,000,000 budget. Even so, critics praised the film, earning it a certified fresh rating of 89% on aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes.
Its addition to the Netflix catalog seems to be turning it into a bit of a cult hit now, and with a runtime of only 90 minutes, it might just be worth checking out while you’re stuck at home in self-quarantine from the Covid-19 coronavirus. You can thank us later.

President Trump has retreated from his claim that the country could return to something like normal by Easter, and extended social distancing recommendations through the end of April. Netflix is adding a robust line-up of popular programs to its slate in March.
In addition to rom-coms like Matthew Mcconaughey’s “Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past,” “He’s Just Not That Into You” and “Always a Bridesmaid,” the streamer is also adding a few classics like “Goodfellas” and “The Shawshank Redemption” starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. The latter film also serves as an analogy for actor Macaulay Culkin’s journey to freedom, according to his Esquire interview.
Original Netflix shows coming to the platform next month include “Lost Girls,” “Crip Camp” and Season 3 of “Elite.” Based on a true story, “Lost Girls” follows a mother who, in her desperate search to find her missing daughter, helps to uncover a string of unsolved murders. Amy Ryan, Gabriel Byrne and Thomasin Mckenzie make up the cast.
“Elite” follows three working-class teens who enroll in an exclusive Spanish private school. But once they arrive,...

With February 29th fast approaching – this is a Leap Year, remember – Netflix is preparing to roll out a fresh helping of new content for March 2020.
It’s a familiar combination of original series, time-honored classics and beloved franchise films, with next month set to herald the arrival of Resident Evil: Apocalypse and its undead sequel, Extinction. Sure, it’s a far cry from the quality and craft of The Lord of the Rings – speaking of which, both the Twin Towers and The Return of the King will be departing Netflix in four weeks’ time – but the saga of Alice still carved out an audience to call its own.
Also peppered throughout Netflix’s March 2020 catalog are some big-name horror titles and edge-of-your-seat thrillers, including Signs and the third season of Ozark. And then there’s the third season of Castlevania, which, it’s fair to say, has been a long time coming.

Here's what's new on Netflix in March 2020! We've got a complete list of what's leaving, too.
Normally the big story for each month of Netflix new releases are the exciting batch of Netflix original series and movies arriving. For Netflix's new releases for March 2020, things are a little bit different. Yes, there are some cool originals here but...look at those movies!
March 1 sees the arrival of Corpse Bride, The Shawshank Redemption, There Will Be Blood, and Goodfellas! Martin Scorsese likely can't unilaterally decide when and where his movies stream, but it is a happy coincidence that Goodfellas will now exist alongside The Irishman.
As for those Netflix originals...Ozark is the biggest returning hit in March. The story of a very corrupt family airs its third season on March 27. Also of note are Castlevania season 3 (March 5), Altered Carbon: Resleeved (March 19). But really after Goodfellas, nothing else was really necessary.

There’s good news and bad news. The good news is we’re gaining some beloved mid-2000s films, like “He’s Just Not That Into You,” “Valentine’s Day” and “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Corpse Bride” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events,” plus some ’90s favorites like “Space Jam” and “GoodFellas.”
The bad news is that throughout the month we’re losing “Black Panther,” “Eat Pray Love,” “The Waterboy,” “P.S. I Love You,” “Batman Begins,” both “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “The Two Towers,” and “Kill Bill” Volumes 1 and 2.

"We worked hard for this! You want to go back to how it was?" Warner Bros has debuted the second & final trailer for the NYC crime thriller The Kitchen, based on a graphic novel also titled The Kitchen. This is the feature directorial debut of Oscar nominated screenwriter Andrea Berloff, and it stars Elisabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy, and Tiffany Haddish as the wives of mobster husbands, who continue to run their racket after the men are sent to prison. "Once they get a taste of the fast life and easy money, it won't be easy to stop." The ensemble cast includes Common, Domhnall Gleeson, James Badge Dale, Bill Camp, Brian d'Arcy James, and Margo Martindale. The serious tone of this throws me off a bit, but I'm curious to see if this is any good. Might turn out badass. Take a look. Here's the second official trailer for Andrea Berloff's The Kitchen,...

It's been a few months since we've heard any further whispers about the possible Gladiator sequel that has been in the works since, well, you know, since the first movie hits theaters way back in 2000. And today seems to be no different as this morning we have word via the producers of the planned Gladiator 2, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, that they are still working with director Ridley Scott and Peter Craig on the film and the story will pick up 25-30 years later, which makes sense.
The producing pair were out and about promoting their newest installment in the Men in Black series. During the recent and ongoing press tour for Mib 4, Parkes and MacDonald dropped this new info on Gladiator 2 with MacDonald saying this.
"We're working with Ridley Scott, that's one we wouldn't touch unless we felt in a way to do it was legitimate.

"Just to be clear - now we run this neighborhood." Warner Bros has revealed the first official trailer for the NYC crime thriller The Kitchen, marking the directorial debut of Oscar nominated screenwriter Andrea Berloff. The movie stars Elisabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy, and Tiffany Haddish as the wives of mobster husbands, who continue to run their racket after the men are sent to prison. "Once they get a taste of the fast life and easy money, it won't be easy to stop." This seems a bit like a 70s New York version of Steve McQueen's Widows from last year - about gangster wives. The cast includes Common, Domhnall Gleeson, James Badge Dale, Bill Camp, Brian d'Arcy James, and Margo Martindale. It's actually based on a graphic novel also titled The Kitchen. Looks pretty damn good. Here's the first official trailer for Andrea Berloff's The Kitchen, direct from WB's...
