Bong Joon Ho doesn't feel more pressure after Oscars success
Bong Joon Ho insists his Oscar success hasn't added more "pressure" on his work. The 55-year-old filmmaker's movie 'Parasite' became the first non-English language movie to win Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards, and also scooped Best Director, International Film, and Original Screenplay, but the 'Mickey 17' filmmaker insisted it hasn't really affected his work.He told The Guardian newspaper: "It changes nothing".However, he then admitted his success likely helped raise the budget for 'Mickey 17' - which reportedly cost 10 times as much to make - and helped secure an international cast, but insisted he didn't feel more pressure.Asked if the pressure was on as a result, he said: “The biggest thing [during production] was, as I’m getting older, I feel a bit weaker, and my stamina is not as strong, so I have to fight against my ageing body and mind. The middle-aged film-maker.

Film Review: The Sandcastle (2024) by Matty Brown
Image
It has been known for some time, but it turns out that the main way Netflix picks its content is through an algorithm that calculates the popularity value of the cast among other things. As such, having “Capernaum”’s Nadine Labaki and Zain Al Rafeea might be what propelled the streamer to pick “The Sandcastle” for its Middle East program, along with the fact that the theme seems to be about Palestine. It turns out, however, that the algorithm can make mistakes, and that star quality is not always enough. Let us take a closer look though.

The Sandcastle is screening at Red Sea Film Festival

A family of four, Nabil, Yasmine and their children, Adam and Jana, find themselves stranded on an island that looks both picturesque and post-apocalyptic, with the ominous presence of a lighting house playing a crucial role in both actually. The reasons for them being there are not exactly clear,...

Image
Netflix’s fifth and final original Christmas movie for 2024 is now streaming, and this one is animated. But you’re still going to recognize a whole lot of the cast.

Written and directed by Richard Curtis, who brought fans “Love, Actually,” the film centers on a group of people in a small town in the UK, getting ready to celebrate Christmas. Like “Love, Actually,” the story is told via vignettes, jumping around between different groups and pairings.

And as you meet those groups and pairings, you’re definitely going to recognize some of those voices. Here’s who we have.

The big man himself is voiced by Brian Cox, who you likely know from his time on “Succession,” or films including “X2: X-Men United,” “Troy,” “Red,” “Zodiac” and “Trick ‘r Treat,” among many others.

Duff and his band delivered a rousing cover of Bowie’s triumphant epic, adding a hard-rock crunch to the classic song. Dylan helped out on rhythm guitar and vocals, hitting the high register on the climactic buildup: “I, I will be king / And you, you will be queen.”

From Season 3 Episode 1 Recap: New Resident Death & 7 Other Reveals Explained
Image
From season 3, episode 1, "Shattered," is an action-packed installment of the MGM+ horror series. In addition to delivering an incredibly tragic death, the season premiere sets up some pretty intense stakes and deepens several of the show's core mysteries. In the From season 2 cliffhanger ending, Boyd (Harold Perrineau), the town's de facto sheriff, ventures into the woods to destroy the bizarre music box, thus freeing Julie (Hannah Cheramy) and the others from Froms haunting nursery rhyme. Meanwhile, Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno), armed with Victor's lunchbox, travels through a Farway Tree, which deposits her at a lighthouse.

Inside, Tabitha confronts the Boy in White, who pushes her out the window. Before he does so, the mysterious boy apologizes to Tabitha, but insists it's the only way out of the town and its surrounding woods. For the most part, From's cast of characters don't come any closer to solving the Township's many mysteries in the sophomore outing.

Simpsons Writer Refutes Duff McKagan’s Claim That Duff Beer Was Named After Him
Image
Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan has long maintained that Duff Beer from The Simpsons was named after him. However, one of the show’s producers and writers has now claimed the showrunners didn’t even know who he was when they dubbed the fictional beer brand years ago.

The Simpsons first aired in late 1989, aligning with Guns N’ Roses rise to fame with 1987’s Appetite for Destruction. So, the timing would have been right for McKagan’s name to have inspired Homer’s cheap beer of choice. The bassist originally claimed he was contacted about the use of his name in his 2011 autobiography, It’s So Easy: and Other Lies.

Bill Skarsgard channelled 'pure evil' for his Nosferatu role
Bill Skarsgard "conjured pure evil" for his part in 'Nosferatu'.The 33-year-old actor is playing the vampire antagonist Count Orlok in Robert Eggers' horror remake and explained how the depths he plumbed for the role "took its toll" on him.Speaking to Esquire, Bill said: "It was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me."The 'It' actor revealed that he hopes that audiences feel a combination of attraction and repulsion towards Count Orlok, although he is not sure viewers will recognise him in his costume and makeup.Bill said of the character: "He's gross."But it is very sexualised. It's playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you. Hopefully you'll get a little bit attracted to it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.

The Lighthouse: The True Story That Inspired Eggers' Movie
Image
The Lighthouse is loosely based on the true Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy, adding depth and authenticity to its bleak tale of despair. The film's nuanced storytelling sparked genre debate, but its core remains a commentary on human despair rooted in a true story. Robert Eggers changed aspects of the true story to create a hallucinatory narrative, drawing inspiration from Poe, Lovecraft, and more.

Despite the surreal, otherwordly style of Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse, the film is loosely based on the true story of a pair of Welsh lighthouse keepers. The Lighthouse's director and producer Robert Eggers co-wrote the movie with his brother Max, who together used the basis of the real-life Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy to incorporate a sense of despair, loneliness, and paranoia into their bleak tale. This firm historical grounding adds to the film's authentic feel and allows Eggers to delve deeper into the tense feeling of nautical cabin fever.

The Lighthouse, Explained
Image
The Lighthouse is a complex and ambiguous film that explores themes of isolation, mental health, and mythology. Director Robert Eggers draws inspiration from various sources, including Edgar Allan Poe and H.P. Lovecraft, to create a surreal and atmospheric narrative. The Lighthouse's ambiguous ending suggests that the characters' descent into madness is a consequence of their pursuit of forbidden knowledge.

Released in 2019, Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse astounded and confused viewers everywhere. The experimental film starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson charts the deteriorating mental states of two lighthouse keepers while on duty. However, the narrative atmosphere can only be described as supernaturally charged.

From the creator of The Witch, The Lighthouse followed suit as an indie horror film but made a name for itself with its ambitious creative direction. Along with its unique style, The Lighthouse is notable for its dark plot and rich themes. These elements combine to make a thrilling,...

“I really like this change”: Call of Duty: Warzone Gets Something Right for a Change
Image
Camping in battle royale titles is a huge headache for the players. Call of Duty: Warzone is not an exception either. To minimize camping in the game, Activision has taken several steps as well. Like the Bunker Buster killstreak in the Season 2 Reloaded update which has literally made it impossible for players to camp inside tall buildings.

Another annoying camping spot is the water towers on Rebirth Island. Since Verdansk, this is the map players have liked so much. But camping in that high position was ruining the game completely. That’s why a new update is on its way to make life harder for the campers in Warzone.

Infil Strike on Rebirth Island in Warzone Is Getting A Much-needed Update

The new Infil Strike feature will eventually make it impossible for players to camp at the Water Tower in Call of Duty: Warzone.

Duff McKagan Unveils Video for “I Just Don’t Know” Featuring Jerry Cantrell: Watch
Image
Duff McKagan released his third solo album, Lighthouse, on Friday (October 20th), and the Guns N’ Roses bassist has unveiled a music video for the song “I Just Don’t Know” featuring Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains.

The plaintive and honest clip sees McKagan and Cantrell playing the acoustic-based track under a massive strobe light that changes based on the mood of the music. Cantrell also contributes a guitar solo and backing vocals to the track.

Lyrically, it’s McKagan at his most sincere and personal, his voice dominant amongst the chiming acoustics — for which Cantrell is a perfect fit. The collab also sees Cantrell reciprocating McKagan’s contribution to the the former’s 2021 solo album, Brighten.

As for Lighthouse, McKagan began work on the project after opening his own Seattle recording studio in 2019. In a press release, he said that the studio allowed him to “finally explore songs...

Uzumaki: What Fans Hope to See in the Upcoming Horror Anime
Image
While action and fantasy are where anime's reputation is built, it also pays significant attention to other genres, especially horror. The high levels of tension and thrill in shows like Another and Higurashi: When They Cry and the distinctive rural terror they portray have led viewers to label them as horror masterpieces.

Unfortunately, numerous successful horror manga have yet to be adapted, but one that is widely considered the genre's peak is finally getting the screen treatment it deserves. Horror fans have long praised the works of Junji Itou, especially Uzumaki: Spiral into Horror.

The short four-episode anime adaptation of Uzumaki will premiere this fall, and if it is well received by audiences and there are no further delays, we can look forward to more of the author's works and potential sequels. However, it is seldom easy to precisely adapt the source material without leaving anything out. So, here are...

Image
Duff McKagan has announced his third solo album, Lighthouse, due October 20th. In advance of its release, the Guns N’ Roses bassist has unveiled the title track.

The 11-song effort ends with three tracks boasting notable guest musicians: “Hope,” featuring McKagan’s Gn’R bandmate Slash; “I Just Don’t Know,” featuring Alice in Chains’ Jerry Cantrell; and “Lighthouse (Reprise)” featuring punk godfather Iggy Pop.

On the title track, McKagan sounds like a punk-rock Bob Dylan as he sings the initial verses over an acoustic guitar line for the first minute or so of the tune. From there, the song kicks in with multi-track vocals and pounding drums for the soaring chorus.

McKagan says of the new album and its theme, “The crashing…. the cresting waves, the falling through of all that surrounds you. Life sometimes tosses us around, and we feel the want of comfort and the pull of home.

Guns N’ Roses’ bassist, Duff McKagan, wants your guiding light on “Lighthouse,” the gentle title track from his upcoming solo album. “Won’t you be my lighthouse?” he sings over a gospel backdrop of organ and backup vocalists. “Give me sight and lead me on/Oh, shine on me, my lighthouse/And dry my aching bones.” The music then shifts gears and becomes more uplifting as McKagan leads a choir singing “Shine, shine, shine,” building bigger and bigger. The full album will shine its light on Oct. 20.

THR reports, “While plot details are being kept six feet under, it is understood that Dafoe is playing a law enforcement officer in the afterlife.”

Kelly Clarkson Reclaims Her Spotlight on New Singles ‘Me’ and ‘Mine’
Image
Kelly Clarkson doubled up for her first release of original music in six years. Ahead of her forthcoming album Chemistry, set for release on June 23, the singer has introduced the record with two separate outlooks on two different songs, “Me” and “Mine.”

“We decided to release ‘mine’ and ‘me’ at the same time because I didn’t want to release just one song to represent an entire album, or relationship,” Clarkson explained in a statement. “There are many stages of grief and loss on this album. Each song is a different stage and emotional state.

Willem Dafoe Interview: Inside
Image
An art thief enters a luxe penthouse filled with high-end art pieces he's meant to steal, there's just one problem - he can't leave. In Inside, Willem Dafoe stars as Nemo, the aforementioned art thief who finds himself stuck inside a cavernous and contemporary penthouse at the top of one of New York City's tallest buildings. Abandoned by his partner-in-crime, Nemo must figure out how to survive when he realizes just how stuck he really is. Physical survival, though, is the least of his worries. How he will maintain his sanity is another question entirely.

Inside is directed by Vasilis Katsoupis from a screenplay by Ben Hopkins. The film had its premiere earlier this year at Berlinale, but it will expand to theaters across the US in the coming weeks.

There Was a Little Part of David Crosby in All of Us, Whether We Knew It or Not
Image
In my many years of seeing live music, few sights were as dispiriting as the first time I saw David Crosby up close. In the early Eighties, he played a solo show at New York’s Town Hall. Walking onstage, looking a little overweight, unkempt and shaggy in an untucked shirt and baggy pants, he plopped down on a wooden chair. His voice was a bit raspier than we’d heard on his records, and the blissed-out smiles and stage patter he was known for were Mia. At one point,...

Lifetime has green-lit an unauthorized 90210 tell-all film, The Hollywood Reporter writes. The movie will be in the same vein as the network's 2014 Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story and forthcoming Full House project. Jeff Roda (Love Liza) is writing for helmer Vanessa Parise (PopFan), and will pen a script that promises to reveal the stress behind the series' up-and-down first four seasons, the reason it became a pop-culture powerhouse, and the drama that shook the show's personnel. (Yep, get ready for some juice from the real Peach Pit, because nothing is sacred.) The news comes a few months before 90210's 25th anniversary; the TV-movie's air date has not been confirmed, though.
