On June 12, the night of the 75th Tony Awards, Jennifer Hudson could become the 17th individual to achieve Egot status: that rare grand slam of winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony over the course of your career. She already has the Ego. As a producer of Best Musical nominee “A Strange Loop,” she could finally spill the T.
Hudson started her run at the Oscars, winning Best Supporting Actress for her feature film debut in the 2006 screen adaptation of the musical “Dreamgirls.” Then in 2009 she won Best R&b Album at the Grammys for her self-titled debut album; in 2017 she collected a second Grammy as a vocalist on the Broadway cast recording of “The Color Purple.” Her Emmy, probably her least known achievement, came in 2021 when she won Best Interactive Media for a Daytime Program at the Daytime Emmys as a producer of the animated short “Baba Yaga.”

Oscar winner and “American Idol” alum Jennifer Hudson is adding something completely different to her resume: Talk show host.
Hudson, most recently seen on the big screen playing Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” is pitching a new daytime talker to be produced by the team from “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Variety has learned. Although not technically an “Ellen” replacement — her show wouldn’t be a continuation of the “Ellen” deals and is being shopped as an entirely new series — it would be positioned as Warner Bros. TV’s new flagship daytime talk show now that “Ellen” is ending its run.
“Ellen” executive producers Andy Lassner and Mary Connelly also served as show runners on Hudson’s test show, which was recently shot on the “Ellen” stage and is now being used as part of the pitch to station groups. Those meetings are taking place this week and appear to be going...

Exclusive: Award-winning actor John Cho (Searching, Star Trek) has signed on to Erick Oh’s animated short, Namoo, as an executive producer.
Pic is Oh’s follow-up to Opera, which landed him an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film earlier this year.
Namoo—which translates in Korean to “tree”—is a hand-painted narrative poem inspired by the passing of Oh’s grandfather. The short follows the beautiful and heartbreaking moments of a man’s life, from beginning to end, and is billed as the writer-director’s most personal work to date. It’s being produced by nine-time Emmy winner Baobab Studios.
“Though Erick’s film is based on his grandfather, it resonated for me in a very personal way. A valentine as well as a testament to the artistic process, this film is a little miracle in that it was animated during the pandemic by artists across the world,...

Jennifer Hudson won a Daytime Emmy Thursday for her role as executive producer in Baobab Studios’ “Baba Yaga,” putting her one award short of achieving Egot status.
VR animated film “Baba Yaga,” made for the Oculus Quest, won in the interactive media for a daytime program category. Hudson starred alongside Glenn Close, Kate Winslet and Daisy Ridley, who also voiced characters. But it was Hudson’s role as executive producer that garnered her the Daytime Emmy Award.
Hudson already has an Oscar, winning for supporting actress in 2007 for her role in “Dreamgirls.” She also has two Grammy awards including Best R&b Album and Best Musical Theater Album. All she needs is the Tony Award to achieve the Egot. And she came close in 2016, but was shockingly snubbed when the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple” landed four nominations with Hudson missing out.

February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.
Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. That’s followed by the Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl-starring Firefly Lane on Feb. 3 and Behind Her Eyes on Feb. 17. Perhaps the biggest sleeper this month, however, is Tribes of Europa. This post-apocalyptic adventure series premieres on Feb. 19.

View Conference has set its first three PreVIEW events for 2021. The free virtual talks feature the gamut of animated films: shorts, VR and feature.
First up, on Friday, Jan 15, will be the filmmakers behind Netflix’s three animated shorts: “Canvas,” directed by Frank Abney and produced by Paige Johnstone; “Cops and Robbers,” directed by Arnon Manor and Timothy Ware-Hill; and “If Anything Happens I Love You,” directed by Will McCormack and Michael Govier. The shorts employ three different styles, but each tell powerful and socially relevant stories.
“Canvas” follows a grieving grandfather who learns to embrace his creativity again with the help of his young granddaughter. “If Anything Happens” examines the aftermath of a school shooting. And “Cops and Robbers” uses animation to illustrate Ware-Hill’s poem about racial injustice and the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. Daisy Ridley and Jennifer Hudson’s avatars stood on stage before a captive audience. “I’ve been holed up for a year, so this is like the first party I’ve been to and it’s just great,” said Ridley, as her animated self smiled and looked out at the room. “I’m in awe,” Hudson added.
In reality, they were hidden behind headsets with Ridley located outside London and Hudson in Chicago. In the VR crowd milling about before the conversation began, an attendee snarked, “You’ve got to wonder how many of these people are wearing pants right now.”
The event was a celebration of “Baba Yaga,” the latest family-friendly project from Baobab Studios, a five-year-old Silicon Valley company that has produced seven VR experiences to date. With Halloween just around the corner, Microsoft and Sony are both celebrating the spooky occasion with a slew of suitably-themed promotions. In case you missed our earlier coverage, the latter just kicked off a massive sale available for all PlayStation owners boasting discounts on over 200 spectacular titles. Whether its competitor intends to respond with its own store-wide sale remains to be seen, though at the very least, Xbox Games With Gold subscribers now have access to a free – and seasonally appropriate – title starting from today.
The nail-biting experience in question is, of course, Maid of Sker, developer Wales Interactive’s first-person survival horror set in 1890s Britain. Microsoft has beaten Sony to the punch this month in revealing its lineup of free offerings for the Xbox Games With Gold promotion throughout October and yes, once again, it’s a pretty awful selection and very, very underwhelming.
All owners of the soon-to-be-retired Xbox One family of consoles will have full access to the usual four titles for the next 30 days just by being subscribed to the platform’s premium online service, all of which will remain yours once November rolls around. Whether you’ll choose to keep them in your library is another matter entirely, however, as while those selected certainly aren’t bad games by any stretch of the imagination, there’s little here that will excite you. Not to mention that you can already pick these up for pretty cheap elsewhere.
The four titles and their respective dates of availability can be found down below:

“Jojo Rabbit” breakout and “Home Alone” reboot star Archie Yates is voicing the lead role in the animated VR film “Paper Birds,” which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Award-winning VR shop Baobab Studios has come on board the project to produce along with Facebook’s Oculus and Latin American animation studio 3Dar.
“Paper Birds,” directed by 3Dar CEO and co-founder German Heller and art director Federico Carlini, tells the story of a young musician named Toto (Yates) whose music attracts a following of mysterious paper birds that help him unlock a portal between the physical world and a dark world invisible to the naked eye. Toto plays a bandoneon, with music performed by renowned Argentine tango bandoneon player Juan Jose Mosalini. Filmmakers crafted the entire universe to feel like each detail has been handmade by artisans. It will be presented in two installments, with the first part available through Oculus later this year.

Virtual Reality producers Baobab Studios have announced that “Star Wars” actor Daisy Ridley will headline the company’s next Vr project, “Baba Yaga,” presenting a Work in Progress panel at this year’s online Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival.
“It’s easy to get caught up in the spectacle of a ‘Star Wars’ film and not to think about the talent of the actors,” director Eric Darnell told Variety, discussing the pleasure of working with Ridley. “It’s even more remarkable when you know that she is standing in front of a greenscreen in a sound studio. For us, to have the opportunity to work with her was huge. Certainly, she is a big name, but for me, it’s always great when you work with wonderful actors.”

Netflix, Disney Sony, Cartoon Network Studios, Dean DeBlois and Aardman are reading presentations at France’s Annecy Film Festival — as 2020’s Annecy, even online, once more proves to be the biggest animation fest in the world and the international event with the largest Hollywood and now global platform presence.
Put together, Annecy’s latest big wave of programming announcement suggests that its move online will mean no world premiere of a potential Hollywood blockbuster – such as, in the past, the “Despicable Me” movie series. With more studio involvement most probably still to be announced, many of the good and great of the English-speaking animation world do look more than willing, however, to roll up their sleeves to update accredited festival viewers on upcoming releases such as, of titles now announced, Netflix’s “Wendell & Wild” and Sony Pictures Animation’s “Connected.”

John Wick is a man of many titles – master assassin, Baba Yaga, that one guy who managed to kill three men in a bar with a f**king pencil… you name it.
He’s also a bona fide action icon, thanks to Chad Stahelski’s 2014 neo-noir revenge thriller that launched John Wick into the headlines. And into our hearts.
Six years (and two more John Wick films) have passed since that humble debut, and Lionsgate shows no sign of slowing up, having already issued the green light for a fourth movie, along with a spinoff TV series featuring the shadowy guests of the Continental.
Neither project is ready to showcase its wares just yet, but this Friday, the Powers That Be are offering action fans the chance to revisit the film that launched a thousand memes. Yes, John Wick will be available to watch online this Friday, May 8th, as...

Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff is set to star in the new sci-fi thriller called Origin Unknown. She will take on the lead role of Mackenzie "Mack" Wilson.
The story for the film is set "after the first manned mission to Mars ends in a deadly crash." Wilson is a mission controller who is summoned to assist an artificial intelligence system – A.R.T.I. During the investigation they uncover "a mysterious object under the surface of Mars, leading to a discovery that could change the future of our planet as we know it."
Sounds like a solid role for Sackhoff to take on as she suits up and heads into space. As a long time fan of Sackhoff, it's always great to see her land leading roles like this. In recent years she's starred in projects such as Riddick, Oculus, Don't Knock Twice, and the Netflix series Longmire.

In the new horror film “Don’t Knock Twice,” there’s a disturbing urban legend involving a child-stealing witch living in an abandoned house. “Knock once to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead…” goes the rhyme, but when troubled teen Chloe (Lucy Boynton) raps at the door one night, she has no idea the horror she’s about to unleash. She flees to the country home of her estranged mother (Katee Sackhoff) — a former addict turned famous artist — and must learn to trust her after many years in order to stop the demon stalking them. It co-stars Nick Moran (“Lock, Stock and Two Smocking Barrels”), Richard Mylan (“The Upside of Anger”), Pooneh Hajimohammadi (“Words with Gods”), Jordan Bolger (“Peaky Blinders”) and more. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Here’s a treat heading your way soon. Starring Katee Sachoff, Lucy Boynton and Nick Moran, Don’t Knock Twice is a really good horror film that we caught last year. What’s more, it’s finally getting a UK cinema release this coming March. March 31st, to be exact.
It’s directed by Caradog James (The Machine), and both a long and short trailer have been made available for the movie. So let’s crack on and show them to you. The long version is here…
And the shorter promo is here…
What’s that? You want a synopsis for the movie too? Gotcha.
For Jess, life has never been better. A successful American sculptor, she has recently returned to the UK, where she spent much of her troubled youth.

"She opens a doorway between hell, so she can devour the innocent. I think she's coming for me next..." An international trailer has debuted for a horror thriller titled Don't Knock Twice. Not to be confused with the indie comedy about an improv group, Don't Think Twice (which we highly recommend seeing), this film is a creepy horror thriller about a demonic witch. The cast includes Katee Sackhoff, Lucy Boynton, Nick Moran, Javier Botet and Jordan Bolger. This looks dark and moody and scary, most definitely, but it also doesn't look that original or interesting. Just more creepiness lurking in the dark. Give it a look anyway. Release details have emerged for Caradog James' (The Machine) Don't Knock Twice. IFC Films will show this haunted featured in theatres and via Video-on-demand in early February. The film's story is based on an urban legend, involving a child-stealing witch. Able to change its form, this monster might just be unstoppable. An early, Russian trailer shows Chloe (Lucy Boynton) struggling with the witch's curse. The film also stars: Katee Sackhoff (Longmire), Nick Moran (Lock, Stock and Two Smocking Barrels) and Richard Mylan (Grownups). A look ahead at the home entertainment launch of Don't Knock Twice is hosted here. The urban legend is new to at least one horror fan. The saying goes like this: "knock once to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead." Once woken, the witch pursues Chloe and Chloe seeks refuge with her mother. Together, they attempt to put the witch back in the grave.

Director Caradog W James' follow-up to 2013 AI sci-fi The Machine, Don't Knock Twice is a horror film that focuses on a mother and a daughter re-establishing their relationship with one another as supernatural forces try to tear them apart.
The central set-up, which I'll mention is by far the least interesting part of the overall film, is troubled mother Jess (Katee Sackhoff) attempting to regain custody of the estranged Chloe (Lucy Boynton). Acting out, Chloe goes with her friend to the creepy old house of an alleged child murderer and, for some reason, baits her rumoured ghost by knocking on the door twice. Hijinks ensue.
What Don’t Knock Twice lacks in originality, it makes up for in creativity. Like a grab bag of horror sub-genres and conventions, there’s nothing too familiar or unfamiliar that the film won't use in an attempt to scare its audience.

Still best known as Battlestar Galactica's Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, Katee Sackhoff is beginning to carve herself a bit of a niche in the horror genre. Following Oculus and Ghosts Of Georgia (plus Riddick, which had monsters in it), she's now signed up for Don't Knock Twice, a British chiller from The Machine's director Caradog James.Currently wheeling and dealing at Cannes, the film is being pitched as in the vein of Candyman and Ring, revolving around a "psychologically terrifying urban legend". The plot sees a guilt-ridden mother trying to save her estranged daughter from the curse of a vengeful witch. We'll assume Sackhoff is the mother. Unless she's the witch.Caradog's The Machine, starring Toby Stephens and Caity Lotz, got a tiny theatrical release but essentially went straight to DVD and digital. Which was a shame because it's good. Despite that, however, it's built an appreciative worldwide following,...
