Women in Animation (Wia) has announced the program for its 6th World Summit, an annual event held in conjunction with the Annecy International Animation Festival.

Based on the theme Gender Justice: A Global Call for Inclusion in Animation, the June 13 summit will include panels and conversations with key thought leaders, filmmakers and executives from around the world on the issue of gender justice for all, including men, women, transgender, and non-binary people.

The Summit will provide a welcome opportunity to address the question of labor shortage in the industry, according to Wia President Marge Dean: “I’m thrilled that our sixth World Summit theme will look at how gender justice can be a solution to some of the issues plaguing the industry including a very real labor shortage. We want to ensure that people of all gender identities have the power and access to opportunities to improve their lives.”

Hudson, most recently seen on the big screen playing Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” is pitching a new daytime talker to be produced by the team from “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Variety has learned. Although not technically an “Ellen” replacement — her show wouldn’t be a continuation of the “Ellen” deals and is being shopped as an entirely new series — it would be positioned as Warner Bros. TV’s new flagship daytime talk show now that “Ellen” is ending its run.

Exclusive: Award-winning actor John Cho (Searching, Star Trek) has signed on to Erick Oh’s animated short, Namoo, as an executive producer.

Pic is Oh’s follow-up to Opera, which landed him an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short Film earlier this year.

Namoo­—which translates in Korean to “tree”—is a hand-painted narrative poem inspired by the passing of Oh’s grandfather. The short follows the beautiful and heartbreaking moments of a man’s life, from beginning to end, and is billed as the writer-director’s most personal work to date. It’s being produced by nine-time Emmy winner Baobab Studios.

Jennifer Hudson won a Daytime Emmy Thursday for her role as executive producer in Baobab Studios’ “Baba Yaga,” putting her one award short of achieving Egot status.

VR animated film “Baba Yaga,” made for the Oculus Quest, won in the interactive media for a daytime program category. Hudson starred alongside Glenn Close, Kate Winslet and Daisy Ridley, who also voiced characters. But it was Hudson’s role as executive producer that garnered her the Daytime Emmy Award.

Hudson already has an Oscar, winning for supporting actress in 2007 for her role in “Dreamgirls.” She also has two Grammy awards including Best R&b Album and Best Musical Theater Album. All she needs is the Tony Award to achieve the Egot. And she came close in 2016, but was shockingly snubbed when the Broadway revival of “The Color Purple” landed four nominations with Hudson missing out.

February may be the shortest month, but that doesn’t mean streaming services can ignore their duty to entertain us at all times. In that mission, Netflix is making a decent effort in February 2021. This isn’t the most jam-packed month the major streamer has trotted out just yet but there are plenty of new originals to get the job done.

Netflix has a few original series of note this month. The party begins with Kid Cosmic on Feb. 2. This animated series is a comic-tinged adventure from Craig McCracken, creator of the Powerpuff Girls. That’s followed by the Sarah Chalke and Katherine Heigl-starring Firefly Lane on Feb. 3 and Behind Her Eyes on Feb. 17. Perhaps the biggest sleeper this month, however, is Tribes of Europa. Baobab is behind the innovative animated VR shorts ““Asteroids,” “Invasion,” “Crow the Legend,” “Bonfire,” “Jack: Part One” and its current VR experience “Baba Yaga,” which features the voices of Kate Winslet, Jennifer Hudson, Glenn Close and Daisy Ridley.

On hand to share stories behind Baobab’s journey will be CEO Maureen Fan, chief creative officer Eric Darnell, chief technology officer Larry Cutler and head of content Kane Lee will look back on an eventful half-decade, which has included creating the shorts “Asteroids,” “Invasion,” “Crow the Legend” and “Bonfire.” The Baobab team will also discuss its current VR experience “Baba Yaga,” which explores the Eastern European legend through a tale of climate change.

Microsoft has beaten Sony to the punch this month in revealing its lineup of free offerings for the Xbox Games With Gold promotion throughout October and yes, once again, it’s a pretty awful selection and very, very underwhelming.

All owners of the soon-to-be-retired Xbox One family of consoles will have full access to the usual four titles for the next 30 days just by being subscribed to the platform’s premium online service, all of which will remain yours once November rolls around. Whether you’ll choose to keep them in your library is another matter entirely, however, as while those selected certainly aren’t bad games by any stretch of the imagination, there’s little here that will excite you. Not to mention that you can already pick these up for pretty cheap elsewhere.

“Jojo Rabbit” breakout and “Home Alone” reboot star Archie Yates is voicing the lead role in the animated VR film “Paper Birds,” which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival. Award-winning VR shop Baobab Studios has come on board the project to produce along with Facebook’s Oculus and Latin American animation studio 3Dar.

“Paper Birds,” directed by 3Dar CEO and co-founder German Heller and art director Federico Carlini, tells the story of a young musician named Toto (Yates) whose music attracts a following of mysterious paper birds that help him unlock a portal between the physical world and a dark world invisible to the naked eye. Toto plays a bandoneon, with music performed by renowned Argentine tango bandoneon player Juan Jose Mosalini. Filmmakers crafted the entire universe to feel like each detail has been handmade by artisans. It will be presented in two installments, with the first part available through Oculus later this year.

Venice VR Expanded will run online this year.

The virtual reality line-up for the Venice Film Festival (September 2-12) features 31 competition titles, including a project created by Jon Favreau.

Badged Venice VR Expanded, the strand will run entirely online. The out of competition line-up includes nine of the best international VR titles and four projects developed during the Biennale College Cinema - VR.

The Favreau project is Gnomes & Goblins, an original production from Wevr, MWMi and Golem Creations that features a virtual world created by the Lion King director in collaboration with VR director Jake Rowell.

Virtual Reality producers Baobab Studios have announced that “Star Wars” actor Daisy Ridley will headline the company’s next Vr project, “Baba Yaga,” presenting a Work in Progress panel at this year’s online Annecy Intl. Animation Film Festival.

“It’s easy to get caught up in the spectacle of a ‘Star Wars’ film and not to think about the talent of the actors,” director Eric Darnell told Variety, discussing the pleasure of working with Ridley. “It’s even more remarkable when you know that she is standing in front of a greenscreen in a sound studio. For us, to have the opportunity to work with her was huge. Certainly, she is a big name, but for me, it’s always great when you work with wonderful actors.”

Put together, Annecy’s latest big wave of programming announcement suggests that its move online will mean no world premiere of a potential Hollywood blockbuster – such as, in the past, the “Despicable Me” movie series. With more studio involvement most probably still to be announced, many of the good and great of the English-speaking animation world do look more than willing, however, to roll up their sleeves to update accredited festival viewers on upcoming releases such as, of titles now announced, Netflix’s “Wendell & Wild” and Sony Pictures Animation’s “Connected.”

Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff is set to star in the new sci-fi thriller called Origin Unknown. She will take on the lead role of Mackenzie "Mack" Wilson.

The story for the film is set "after the first manned mission to Mars ends in a deadly crash." Wilson is a mission controller who is summoned to assist an artificial intelligence system – A.R.T.I. During the investigation they uncover "a mysterious object under the surface of Mars, leading to a discovery that could change the future of our planet as we know it."

Sounds like a solid role for Sackhoff to take on as she suits up and heads into space. As a long time fan of Sackhoff, it's always great to see her land leading roles like this. In recent years she's starred in projects such as Riddick, Oculus, Don't Knock Twice, and the Netflix series Longmire.

Back in September of 2015, Oz Perkins’ horror film “The Blackcoat’s Daughter” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and spent most of the past year and a half on the festival circuit. Now, the film will finally receive a theatrical release through A24.

It was revealed today that Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica, Riddick, Oculus, Don't Knock Twice) will play the lead role of Mackenzie 'Mack' Wilson in the sci-fi thriller Origin Unknown, and that Content Media has come on board to handle worldwide sales. UK-based Coffee & Cigarettes who act as executive producers on the film brokered the deal with Content Media to represent the film. Here's what Eduardo Panizzo of Coffee & Cigarettes had to say in his statement about the new deal.

In the new horror film “Don’t Knock Twice,” there’s a disturbing urban legend involving a child-stealing witch living in an abandoned house. “Knock once to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead…” goes the rhyme, but when troubled teen Chloe (Lucy Boynton) raps at the door one night, she has no idea the horror she’s about to unleash. She flees to the country home of her estranged mother (Katee Sackhoff) — a former addict turned famous artist — and must learn to trust her after many years in order to stop the demon stalking them. A quality horror heading your way in March. Here's the first trailer for Don't Knock Twice...

Here’s a treat heading your way soon. Starring Katee Sachoff, Lucy Boynton and Nick Moran, Don’t Knock Twice is a really good horror film that we caught last year. What’s more, it’s finally getting a UK cinema release this coming March. March 31st, to be exact.

Not to be confused with the indie comedy about an improv group, Don't Think Twice (which we highly recommend seeing), this film is a creepy horror thriller about a demonic witch. I've got a trailer here for a new horror thriller starring Katee Sackhoff (Oculus, Riddick, Battlestar Galactica) called Don't Knock Twice. This looks like it could be a fun and creepy horror movie as it deals with a vengeful demonic shape-shifting witch who is out for blood. Here's the synopsis:

Director Caradog W James' follow-up to 2013 AI sci-fi The Machine, Don't Knock Twice is a horror film that focuses on a mother and a daughter re-establishing their relationship with one another as supernatural forces try to tear them apart.

The central set-up, which I'll mention is by far the least interesting part of the overall film, is troubled mother Jess (Katee Sackhoff) attempting to regain custody of the estranged Chloe (Lucy Boynton). Acting out, Chloe goes with her friend to the creepy old house of an alleged child murderer and, for some reason, baits her rumoured ghost by knocking on the door twice. Hijinks ensue.

What Don’t Knock Twice lacks in originality, it makes up for in creativity. Like a grab bag of horror sub-genres and conventions, there’s nothing too familiar or unfamiliar that the film won't use in an attempt to scare its audience.

With everything going so well, the last thing Jess (Katee Sackhoff) needed was this... Caradog James's Don't Knock Twice made its debut at this year's Raindance Film Festival and is set to be released early next year, and it is teased in the film's official poster. 21 year old Lucy Boynton stars in Don't Knock Twice, a supernatural horror feature film which is currently shooting in Cardiff, directed by Caradog James from a script by Howl writers Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler.

Don't Knock Twice is the story of a guilt-ridden mother, played by Katee Sackhoff, who must encounter the truth behind the legend of a vengeful witch in order to reconnect with the estranged daughter she placed into care.

Lucy (represented by United Agents) started acting aged 11 when she was cast as the young Beatrix Potter alongside Renée Zellweger in the movie Miss Potter. She went on to film Ballet Shoes for the BBC with Emma Watson, as well as playing Margaret Dashwood in the BBC’s 2008 adaptation of Sense & Sensibility.
