Despite Poor Reviews and Box Office Run, This Angelina Jolie Rom-Com Is Now a Hit Online 23 Years Later
Image
Angelina Jolie is mostly known as a highly profitable action star, especially for her run in the early 2000s. Even at the height of her stardom, her projects were plagued with poor reviews.

Her 2002 rom-com Life or Something Like It was no exception. Even though it premiered three years after her Oscar for 1999's Girl, Interrupted, and in the midst of her Tomb Raider fame, the rom-com was a major critical and commercial failure. However, many projects get an afterlife on streaming, and Tudum reports Jolie's Life or Something Like It was a major hit on Netflix following its debut on streaming.

For the week between Apr. 14 and 20, Life or Something Like It debuted in third place in the global charts. The rom-com received encouraging numbers, with 5.5 million views and 9.6 million hours viewed.

Life or Something Like It debuted in the Top 10 in 24 countries across South and North America,...

Netflix's top 5 movies and shows put up astonishing number of views last week
Image
The top five most viewed Netflix movies and shows for last week, listed on Tudum, have some big hitters in there. The movies had over 30 million views, and the top five shows had another 40 million. And that’s just for the week to April 13. That’s a whole lot of watching going on.

On the movie front, viewers continued to love a recent romantic comedy and a couple of prehistoric settings. There’s the warmth and humor from a new family comedy and a fun caper for all ages, with the ever-present scenario of good versus bad. Mind you, these are the goodies in this particular film.

As for the shows, those 40 million viewers have made some great choices. A strong view of society and its problems is a theme for the two at the top. But that's balanced with a touch of animation and that good versus evil theme again.

‘Meet The Khumalos’ Netflix Review: South African Film Is Perfect For A Summer Family Watch
Image
It’s unfortunate, but I’m quite uneducated when it comes to the South African cinemascape. So, I had no idea that Meet The Khumalos is actually a remake of the 2017 film Meet The Kandasamys. I suppose if you know anything about that film, you probably know what this one’s about, but for the uninitiated, let me give you an outline of Meet The Khumalos so you can decide if it’s worth a watch or not. The film follows two families, the Khumalos and the Sitholes, who are new neighbors but apparently also old foes. Grace, the matriarch of the Khumalos, hates Bongi, the new neighbor but old best friend. To add to the drama, their kids fall in love and keep their beautiful romance a secret. However, Grace and Bongi are quick to smell something fishy and decide to sabotage the relationship rather than talk to their kids like civil parents.

‘Meet The Khumalos’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Do Bongi and Grace Become Friends Again?
Image
The ending of Meet the Khumalos is happy and delightful because it truly brings Zulu culture to life in the final act. The film follows Grace and Bongi, who become neighbors after the Sithole family moves next door to Grace’s Khumalos. I could call them sworn enemies, but that’s not how things are; it’s actually Grace who absolutely despises Bongi, and the latter just reacts to that hatred. Things get crazy when Grace’s son, Sizwe, and Bongi’s daughter, Sphe, start dating and disrupt the balance. The women get together to destroy the perfectly happy relationship that their kids have, but in secret, so you can imagine that it snowballs into a comedy of errors resulting in heartbreak for the innocent kids. But what made Grace hate Bongi so much? And will they be friends again? Let’s find out.

Spoiler Alert

Why Does Grace Hate Bongi So Much?...

Meet the Khumalos: A South African Comedy on Netflix
Bienvenue chez les Khumalos (2025)
Looking for a laugh and a way to unwind? Netflix delivers with “Meet the Khumalos,” a family comedy designed purely for your entertainment and enjoyment.

Forget about philosophical quandaries, existential crises, and even, if you can, international politics for a bit.

We know it’s a tall order, but “Meet the Khumalos” is here to help you try.

The Plot

The plot of “Meet the Khumalos” centers on a classic comedic setup: clashing personalities and the unpredictable twists of family life. The story focuses on Grace Khumalo (played by Khanyi Mbau), whose seemingly perfect life in the upscale Umhlanga neighborhood is upended when her former high school acquaintance, Bongi Sithole (played by Ayanda Borotho), moves in next door. The situation escalates when Grace and Bongi are horrified to discover that their respective children have fallen secretly in love. This “forbidden love” element, juxtaposed with the mothers’ animosity, creates a central...
