Lazarus is gearing up to have an incredibly unique soundscape, with multiple artists contributing to the overall soundtrack that should compliment Cowboy Bebop creator Shinichiro Watanabe's distinct story-telling style. Via a press release, three artists are contributing to the Lazarus soundtrack: Kamasi Washington, Floating Point and Bonobo. Over the last 25 years, many anime titles have gone unnoticed by most fans. Unlike hit series like Solo Leveling, My Hero Academia or Dandadan, these series couldn't garner enough attention for fans to appreciate them until years later. Their cult followings have kept them alive over the years, and some even get new spin-offs or sequels that slip under most people's radars.
For every successful anime adaptation, there are plenty of series with unique ideas that aren't successful enough to appeal to a broad audience. These series are still great on their own. However, they've only gained widespread recognition years after airing. Anyone curious enough to break away from popular seasonal titles should take the time to check out these classic anime series.

Plot twists in anime keep the story engaging, but too much can be overwhelming for fans. They can also fall flat if they become too predictable, so an anime always needs to strike a fine balance between over or under doing plot twists. When an anime executes it in a tasteful and clever way, it can elevate the anime to greater lengths and make itself memorable years after its release, such as Attack on Titan and Death Note.
Plot twists are a necessary addition to storytelling as they raise the stakes in stories. They're one of the most important plot devices that can differentiate a good anime from a fantastic one. Some of the best anime that feature this is Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which uses plot twists in the most impactful ways to leave a lasting impression on its viewers.

Only a few years ago, the association of Studio Mappa with any anime was a matter of great joy for fans. Every fandom desperately wished that their favorite manga gets adapted by Mappa. This confidence was a result of the stunning animation quality in the anime series produced by the studio. Moreover, the animation production of many popular and mainstream titles was taken over by Mappa.

Mappa’s upcoming original anime, Lazarus, has become one of the most anticipated spring 2025 anime. The biggest reason behind its popularity might be the involvement of Shinichiro Watanabe, who is directing and co-writing the series. Known for directing Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, and other cult classics, Watanabe is a force to be reckoned with.
The cast and staff behind Lazarus are all big names in the industry. Needless to say, fans are excited about the upcoming anime. However, it might be best to approach the series with caution.

Shinichiro Watanabe is a name synonymous with his epic, genre-redefining works. He started the trends that continue to influence anime even today. From Cowboy Bebop to Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy, his works have always been stylish and classy, with the appropriate amount of depth and heavy themes.

This balanced manner of storytelling is what gives the audience the full Watanabe experience. From the beginning to the end, the magic of the music, the laid-back characters, and the intricate plot all seem realistic as they slowly intertwine and give rise to a unique narrative.
This has been Watanabe’s way; he does not rush and hurry to skip out the parts that could flesh out the characters and deepen the essence of the narrative. The quirky characters and the effortless cool factor are important. Unfortunately, Lazarus seems to be taking a more serious approach.

Mappa is one of the top-tier animation giants in the anime industry that gave us iconic series. From Chainsaw Man to Kids on the Slope, they worked on a diverse range of anime. Anime is often expected to be filled with content that matches the usually stunning art styles and animation that are typically seen in many series. But what many will quickly learn from currently popular shows like Jujutsu Kaisen and Solo Leveling is that anime can get rather dark; quite a few series can become as gruesome and heart-wrenching as live-action shows like Game of Thrones or Netflix’s Maid.
Clannad and Elfen Lied are two anime, for example, that have fallen into the category of incredibly sad or twisted titles that viewers find difficult to watch, despite finding the overall story enjoyable. Old or new, there are several shows that fans will raise on a pedestal yet will still claim are hard to stomach without pausing the video and taking a breather.

Music is an essential part of Shinichiro Watanabe’s directorial vision. From Macross Plus to Carole & Tuesday, Watanabe has incorporated a wide variety of genres in his works. However, his collaboration with Yoko Kanno for Cowboy Bebop remains iconic to this day. Jazz perfectly complemented the retro and upbeat yet melancholic mood of the series.

Given how perfectly synchronized Watanabe’s vision and Kanno’s beats were, one would expect them to collaborate on subsequent projects without thinking twice. However, that wasn’t the case at all! The Cowboy Bebop director deliberately chose different composers in his next anime and even shared the reason why he didn’t get Kanno onboard. While the reason makes sense, the music featured in Samurai Champloo is a great topic of discussion on its own.

Shinichiro Watanabe’s hold on his craft is impeccable; he could easily be an anime character himself, someone who is sought out by others to achieve mastery of something. It mixes modern animation with a hint of nostalgic 90s anime art style, so much so that you wouldn’t believe it’s animated by Mappa. I’ve always dreamt of doing live-action, and at first, I really hesitated between doing live-action and animation. I ended up doing animation, and my dreams there have kinda come true (laughs), so now I just have live-action left."

Deep anime that keep fans thinking long after their end are now more popular than ever. Newcomers may find this surprising, as anime can look like a lighthearted form of entertainment on a surface level. Dig a little deeper, however, and one will find plenty of shows with surreal, existentialist, and highly elaborate themes.
The topics anime can cover are seemingly endless. Modern psychology, gender, and the role of technology are just few of the many challenging subjects that become more accessible when filtered through an anime lens. That's not to say that any of these series are straightforward viewing experiences: they open viewers up to new ideas that keep them thinking long after the credits roll.

Manga and light novel-based anime adaptations have been the norm in the anime community for decades. While manga readers particularly enjoy the transition of their favorite stories from paper to the television screen, non-manga fans would beg to differ. A considerable part of the fandom complains that manga spoilers ruin the experience and anticipation of watching a popular anime adaptation.
Since the practice is so oversaturated, any original work that graces the screen is welcomed by fans. From timeless classics like Cowboy Bebop to critically acclaimed anime series like Terror in Resonance, several original anime over the years have amazed fans with their stories made from scratch.

Anime adaptations can be successful in live-action if treated well, as seen with Alita: Battle Angel, but skepticism still surrounds the intersection of the two mediums. Several captivating anime, such as Your Lie In April and Terror In Resonance, have the potential for brilliant live-action adaptations due to their compelling storylines and themes. Mecha anime like Gurren Lagann and period fantasy dramas like Berserk offer unique worlds and characters that could thrive in the live-action medium, appealing to a wide range of audiences.
With a good deal of anime like One Piece and Cowboy Bebop getting live-action adaptations, it is hard not to speculate which ones deserve to be reimagined in the live-action medium next. The intersection between anime and live-action in recent years has sparked several debates on whether the Japanese audiovisual animated medium of storytelling can leap onto the silver screen in live-action form. While some western adaptations...

Even fans who have never watched or even heard of Neon Genesis Evangelion would likely recognize the most famous shots, lines, and especially memes the show spawned. As such, there are many anime influenced by Evangelion's striking images, thrilling action, and philosophical themes. From the mecha battles of Code Geass to the nightmarishness of Perfect Blue, fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion have plenty more shows to sink their teeth into.
Perfect Blue (1998)
An anime movie that’s more than Oscar-worthy, Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue is a master class in surreal horror. Adult Swim has just announced a new anime series from the creator of Cowboy Bebop, Shinichiro Watanabe, and the creator of John Wick, Chad Stahelski, promising some incredible animated action brought to the screen by studio Mappa.
As reported by Vulture, the series, titled Lazarus, is to be animated by the studio Mappa, known for their work on Attack on Titan and Chainsaw Man. Set in the future year of 2052, all is relatively peaceful thanks to the creation of a new drug, known as Hapuna, which has done away with illness and suffering in the world. Hapuna's creator suddenly goes missing for three years before resurfacing, announcing to the world that Hapuna will kill everyone who has taken it in just three years. The Lazarus group is assembled to find a way for humanity to survive, and they have a hard deadline to work with.

Mappa CEO Manabu Otsuka cites the production structures of Chainsaw Man and Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill as part of a necessary direction for the company's survival.
Per Kompass, Yuri!!! on Ice's profitability relative to its success was "insignificant," Otsuka outlines. "For example, it was possible to describe the outcome of Yuri!!! on Ice, which we produced, as a big hit, but relative to its success, the money that the studio gained was insignificant. We have responsibilities, I feel - even as we accepted this [equity] structure - and we had to increase what we were capable of doing."

Mappa has made history with Yuri!!! on Ice in the most baffling fashion.
Studio Mappa, the animation and production studio behind works such as Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, recently and inexplicably uploaded the opening song for Yuri!!! on Ice -- seven years after the series premiered in 2016. The upload confused fans and sent many into a panic as they believed Mappa finally had news about Yuri!!! on Ice's movie Ice Adolescence, only to find out it was simply an upload of "History Maker." The opening has garnered over 27,000 views since its upload as of this article's writing.

The new Manhwa Terror Man from Ablaze puts an entertaining spin on the incredibly dark topic of terrorism. It certainly isn't the first work to do this, with anime like Mappa's Terror in Resonance also tackling this heavy topic. But what makes this manhwa by Dongwoo Han and Jinho Ko is how ridiculously they tackle the topic and the fun chaos that ensues.
Terror Man focuses on Jungwoo Min, a shy boy who has the power to see misfortune before it happens. One day, when shopping in a mall, he sees that the building is doomed to collapse and assumes the role of a terrorist in order to evacuate the building. After taking credit for the destruction of the building, he becomes a public enemy and goes on to take credit for more destructive events in order to save lives while also not revealing his ability. Anime reboots can sometimes be far-fetched ideas since a studio would rather make a new anime series based on a popular manga than produce a completely new version of an already poorly regarded one. If it were so simple, we could have a slew of much-needed reboots, such as Tokyo Ghoul and Rosario Vampire. The good news is that Rurouni Kenshin, a classic anime series that, despite a few shortcomings, emerged as one of the best anime shows, is getting a remake this year.
Even though the Rurouni Kenshin franchise has spanned an anime series with 94 episodes and a highly successful live-action movie series that ended in 2021 with Rurouni Kenshin: Final Chapter Part II - The Beginning, it is planning to deliver fans with another intriguing one with a rebooted version of the original.

If you were an unsuspecting late-night Cartoon Network viewer in 2001, you likely witnessed the birth of "Adult Swim." And, if you were there, then it is safe to say that one of your formative introductions to anime involved some loud horns blaring at the stroke of midnight, followed by the funkiest bass strings you'd ever heard. That's when you knew, deep down, that something different was happening.
"Cowboy Bebop" is, without question, one of the most highly regarded anime series of all time. With its rugged, quirky characters, fantastic animation, and epic score, the show has served as a welcome introduction to anime for many fans. I guess it was due time for Godzilla to get an anime version, and the 32nd film in the franchise provides just that, with the present movie being the first part of an upcoming trilogy, which, this time, implements a rather sci-fi approach.
In the last summer of the 20th century, giant monsters began appearing all over the world and wreaking havoc. A powerful creature called Godzilla appeared which destroyed humans and monsters alike. Two species of aliens, the Exif and the Bilusaludo, arrived with the former attempting to convert humanity to their religion and the latter seeking to emigrate to Earth with promises to defeat Godzilla with Mechagodzilla, should humanity accept them. However, the Bilusaludo were unable to activate Mechagodzilla, which forced the aliens and humanity to abandon Earth and emigrate to Tau Ceti e.
