Which animated favorites did HBO Max cut this time?
Image
The streamer lost more popular animated content at the end of July.

HBO Max has made multiple efforts to subtly shift its target audience over the past couple of years. The most obvious was its recent move to change its name from Max back to HBO Max, but there have also been concerted efforts to gear the streamer’s catalog more toward adults who can best appreciate its premium brand. Those efforts have included the removal of kids’ content from the streamer, and at the end of July, HBO Max lost two more marquee titles in the genre.

Key Details: Dog days of summer: “Courage the Cowardly Dog” and “What’s New Scooby-Doo?” are no longer available on HBO Max. Lost license: The removals are thanks to the expiration of HBO Max’s license to stream them. Gone looney?: Earlier this year, the streamer also pulled a selection of “Looney Tunes” episodes.

Gary Dauberman
Gary Dauberman is staying busy. A couple of years ago, he signed a first-look deal with Sony’s Screen Gems for feature films. As part of that deal, he is expected to “create projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.” So far, the deal has resulted in the video game adaptation Until Dawn, and other projects in development include the Joe Hill adaptation Ushers, an Urban Legend reboot, the “demonic horror on a plane” story Human Remains, and the video game adaptation The Medium. Now, Deadline reports that Dauberman and his production company Coin Operated are teaming with Brightburn director David Yarovesky to develop a horror movie called He Never Dies.

Yarovesky will be writing and directing the movie. Here’s the logline: In He Never Dies, the man they killed keeps coming back. Bigger. Stronger. Less human. No matter what they do… He. Never.

Stranger Things Theory Gives Max the Pettiest Revenge Arc You Didn’t Know You Needed
Image
As Stranger Things season five gears up to drop its first set of episodes later this year, on November 26, an interesting fan theory on Reddit (posted by @New-Independent6649/Reddit) has shed new light on the ultimate fate of Max Mayfield, played by the brilliant Sadie Sink. While Max almost succumbed to Vecna’s evil prowess at the end of the fourth season of Stranger Things, she was somehow revived by Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), but eventually ended up in a coma and was rendered brain-dead.

The Reddit fan theory harps on the assumption that Max might be making good use of her time while being trapped inside Vecna’s Lair, given the fact that the evil master traps his victims inside his mind, as has been explained in the previous seasons of Stranger Things.

As Max has become an inseparable part of the group of friends at Hawkins, the fifth...

5 Songs With ‘Forever’ Music Supervisor Kier Lehman
Image
Music supervisor is a job that is part professional music nerd, part aural detective and part crate-digging business affairs exec. 5 Songs is a Deadline series that highlights the work of these below the line workers through songs and stories.

Forever is an adaptation of the 1975 Judy Blume novel, but set in Los Angeles rather than New Jersey. It tells the story of two young athletes, played by Justin Edwards and Keisha Clark, who reunite, after going to grade school together, and fall in love but face the pressure of sports, academics and college prep.

From Mara Brock Akil, the series, which has already been renewed for a second season, features a lot of music, particularly songs from L.A.-based artists that were on the scene in 2018.

'Entity Within': Heather Graham Cast in Fresh Take On Doris Bither Haunting
Image
The 1980s was a tremendous decade for horror movies. We saw the birth of new icons, and were treated to a plethora of practical effects from filmmakers who pushed the limits of acceptable taste. Yet sandwiched in between the likes of Freddy Kruger, Jason Voorhees, and effects wizard Tom Savini was perhaps one of the best supernatural horror movies ever made that doesn't get nearly the love that it should. Maybe now it will get the recognition it deserves thanks to star Heather Graham, who is set to lead a new spin on the true story that inspired 1982's The Entity.

Deadline reports that Graham is set to lead Entity Within, which comes by way of Insidious and Paranormal Activity producer Steven Schneider. Directed by Nick Simon, the film isn't a remake in the traditional sense, but rather a new look at one of the most documented paranormal cases in...

'Heart Eyes' Review: A Grisly Laugh Riot Skewers Valentine's Day
Image
Heart Eyes disembowels Valentine's Day in a grisly laugh riot that mocks romantic comedies. The tongue in cheek slasher flick takes an Olympic dive through tired horror genre tropes and comes up for air with a devilish grin. The film doesn't take itself seriously, acknowledges absurdity with slivers of clever dialogue, and then doubles down on the carnage to fill fandom's expected gore quota. The plot makes zero sense outside the overall premise, but that's not entirely detrimental. Fantastic chemistry between capable leads keeps your attention when common sense attempts to overtake the bloody fun.

‘The Colors Within’ Review: Yamada Naoko’s Luminous Anime About Finding Oneself
Image
The idea behind Yamada Naoko’s animated film The Colors Within is simple and straightforward. Totsuko (Suzukawa Sayu), a student at an all-girls Catholic boarding school, has the ability to see the “colors” of others, and finds herself especially drawn to people who give off the most vibrant hues. Early on, she gets socked in the face during gym class while entranced by the solid blue of Kimi (Takaishi Akari), a pretty classmate throwing a dodgeball her way. And at its most rapturous, The Colors Within uses color and perception not to simplify its world but to reflect the complexity of the emotions its characters feel so deeply.

Despite what the title of the film might suggest, Totsuko’s synaesthesia isn’t the focal point of the story. Animation studio Science Saru may have a reputation for taking wild, experimental swings, yet this film’s most affecting sequences are the ones grounded in reality.

Bleed From Within Announce New Album Zenith, Unleash “In Place of Your Halo”: Stream
Image
Bleed From Within have announced their new album, Zenith, arriving April 4th via Nuclear Blast Records. The video for the single “In Place of Your Halo” is out now.

The band pays tribute to its native Scotland on the infectious track, which features a remarkable bagpipe breakdown. Groove riffs and Pantera-like stomps are hastened into a mosh-ready four-minute package of metalcore — with an emphasis on that genre’s suffix, hardcore. The cold reality of the lyrics and overall delivery has a raw punk-rock quality.

As Bleed From Within stated in the press release, the song marks “the beginning of the next chapter for Bleed From Within.”

“It is an anthem for those that feel like life has passed them by, or those that have been held back by their own limitations,” the band said. “We are killing the older version of ourselves in order to grow.

Hidden in my Paradise Review – A Pocketful of Paradise
Image
Within every gaming genre exist hidden gems, experiences that enrich our love of play by adding their own novel touches. Ogre Pixel’s Hidden in My Paradise joins this special class with its blend of exploration, creativity, and charm. As a hidden object title published for Nintendo Switch and PC, it takes the familiar formula and infuses it with welcome adventure and expression.

Players guide photographer Laly through varied locales like forests and beaches, seeking hidden items to help wildlife. But Paradise sets itself apart with photography puzzles that recreate scenes, giving Detective Pikachu vibes. And its island builder lets users decorate as their artistic souls please. These features give the game extra soul.

Yet its execution left me conflicted. While brimming with wholesomeness, levels felt cramped. Puzzles could prove fussy. And placing objects proved tricky on Switch. However, where it succeeded brought joy. Helping animals amid lush backdrops relaxed mind and spirit.

Elrentaros Wanderings Review: A Game of Missed Opportunities
Image
Elrentaros Wanderings comes from developer Hakama, led by Rune Factory creator Yoshifumi Hashimoto. The game takes place across two parallel worlds—a rural fantasy village called Elrentaros and a present-day Japanese school.

In Elrentaros, monsters plague the townspeople, so players take on the role of an adventurer exploring mysterious dungeons to help the locals. Along the way, strange things occur—sometimes the player wakes up in their other life at school, where characters resemble those in Elrentaros.

With veterans from the Rune Factory series involved, hopes were high. Players could customize weapons and complete quests, with farming and relationship elements alongside the core action-dungeon gameplay. Repetitive combat and lack of motivation to keep exploring hold it back from achieving its potential.

The two worlds introduced an intriguing concept but received little development. If the scope had matched the pedigree, it may have become something truly special. As is, Elrentaros Wanderings...

The 10 Saddest Deaths In Godzilla's Movies, Ranked
Image
Godzilla movies feature surprisingly emotional deaths, from the tragic fall of Mothra to the selfless sacrifice of Dr. Serizawa. The original 1954 Godzilla's demise is a mixture of relief and tragedy, showcasing the creature as a victim of nuclear testing. Sacrifices play a prominent role in Godzilla films, with characters like Mothra and Rodan giving their lives to empower Godzilla.

As giant monster movies, it's no surprise that the Godzilla films feature plenty of death. What can be a shock is just how poignant many of these deaths are. Across Godzilla's many eras, the series has become increasingly silly, making it hard to believe that the franchise could muster any genuine emotional downbeats. Yet several of the death scenes featured throughout Godzilla's many films can be quite somber affairs, eliciting a tearful reaction amidst the chaos of kaiju battles.

The tragic deaths of Godzilla's movies come in many forms.

They will be joined by newer talents – Vier Nev, behind “A Mind Sang” – João Carrilho, Patrícia Figueiredo and Natália Azevedo Andrade – who together deliver an eloquent snapshot of the burgeoning state of Portuguese animation.

Over the last 30 years, Portuguese animation has won ever more prizes for usually 2D short films of dazzling beauty, experimentation and sometimes social point. The career of Regina Pessoa, who delivers a masterclass at Annecy, is a case in point.

Animation remains in Portugal a vocational passion. In one case in point, Ribeiro, after scoring praise and plaudits with feature film “Nayola,” will present a short film, “The Flower and the Fish,” which marks another new direction in vastly eclectic career.

Yet Portuguese animation is in the throes of industry take-off.

‘Mean Girls’ Star Avantika Talks Meeting Amanda Seyfried and Her Movie-Stealing Musical Number
Image
Within hours of Mean Girls’ (2024) box office-topping release, bootleg video of Avantika’s song-and-dance number, “Sexy,” circulated social media to the praise of people far and wide.

Avantika plays a new take on Amanda Seyfried’s Karen in Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr.’s film adaptation of Tina Fey’s Mean Girls Broadway musical, which was based on Fey and Mark Waters’ 2004 comedy classic. (The original Mean Girls was also based on Rosalind Wiseman’s book Queen Bees and Wannabes.) Like the Karen before her, Avantika’s version of the character is also endearingly slow on the uptake, often garnering the film’s best jokes and biggest laughs, but Fey, who returned as screenwriter, opted to not just play all the hits again, such as Karen’s “weather report.”

Avantika didn’t get the chance to meet Seyfried before or during production, but a couple of days after the...

Daft Punk Continue Accessing Random Memories With ‘Drumless Edition’ LP

Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), due out November 17, features all 13 songs from the original LP, but as the title suggests, the drums and percussion have been stripped from the defunct dance duo’s tracks.

Ahead of the reworked LP’s release, Daft Punk has shared the “drumless” version of the ballad “Within”; although already one of Random Access Memories’ less percussive tracks, the “drumless edition” take spotlights Chilly Gonzales’s piano work.

Daft Punk Announce Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition)
Image
Daft Punk are still keeping the good times rolling as they celebrate the 10th anniversary of their final studio album. After sharing an extended deluxe version of it earlier this year, the French house duo have announced Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition), a track-by-track reimagining of the record without a single drum beat.

While it’s hard to imagine most Daft Punk songs drumless, Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) should pique interest in fans wanting to delve deeper into the layers of the band’s compositions. Pre-orders are ongoing now before the album is out in full November 17th.

See the artwork and tracklist for Random Access Memories (Drumless Edition) below.

Earlier this year, Daft Punk released a deluxe edition of Random Access Memories, featuring 35 minutes of previously unreleased music. In an interview corresponding with its release, Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter said he was “relieved” that the duo disbanded,...

Daft Punk Unveil Random Access Memories 10th Anniversary Edition: Stream
Image
Daft Punk have unveiled the 10th anniversary reissue of their final album, Random Access Memories. Featuring nine previously-unreleased tracks — totaling 35 minutes of new music — the release offers a unique glimpse into the French duo’s creative process, and pays homage to the celebrated, 2x album that marked the end of their run.

“Infinity Repeating (2013 Demo)” was recorded during the initial sessions for Random Access Memories at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles and Electric Lady Studios in New York. Built around a literal loop, the song (and its animated video) allude to the confluence of humanity and technology, a theme present throughout the album. “It’s lovely and bizarre, like a human,” Casablancas said in a statement. “And, like a human,...

Daft Punk announce nine unreleased tracks on 10th anniversary edition of ‘Random Access Memories’
Image
Just when we thought we’d heard the last of Daft Punk, the French funk duo are gifting us with nine unreleased tracks.

The new songs will feature on a new edition of 2013’s Random Access Memories to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

The Grammy winning album was originally released in 2013 and included tracks including “Get Lucky”, “Lose Yourself to Dance” and “Instant Crush”.

The album also features collaborations with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas.

The duo, made up of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo – who always appear under the guise of helmets – announced the end of the band in 2021.

At the time, the pair revealed the news in an eight-minute video titled “Epilogue” on their YouTube channel. The clip is an excerpt from their 2006 science-fiction film Electroma.
