- A group of Chilean filmmakers living abroad asked themselves the following question: Is it a Utopia to make a collective film in 2023, outside the production systems, retaking the model of voluntary work of the early 70's? Starting with a common archive extract from a film entitled "A Happy Summer" by Alejandro Segovia, each filmmaker offers a free look, a reflection, a questioning of ephemeral utopias, to scrutinize the transformations that have taken place in the last 50 years in Chile. The film, a 1972 documentary produced by the Film and Television Department of the Central Unica de Trabajadores (C.U.T.), mixes fact and fiction to describe how working families enjoyed the unique program created by the Unidad Popular, to take workers and their families on vacation to the sea. The 30-second excerpt we have chosen seemed to us to carry all the hope and promise of a possible utopia and was the starting point for a contemporary film creation. In UTOPIAS the six filmmakers/artists offer a personal interpretation from collective and family experience and memory.—Pamela Varela
