Horror fans, prepare for a fright-filled evening as the iconic Friday the 13th returns to the big screen on the most sinister day of the year, Friday the 13th. Hosted by former Horror Channel presenter and all round horror scholar Emily Booth, this event promises to launch a new monthly horror film club with a scream. And all you need to do to enjoy it, is make your way down to the Electric Palace Cinema, in Hastings. Along with the classic slasher flick, audiences will be treated to Booth’s very own short horror film, Selkie, filmed on Rock-a-Nore beach, adding a chilling local twist to the event.
Friday the 13th is more than just a film; it’s a hallmark of the horror genre. Directed by Sean S. Cunningham and featuring a cast that includes a young Kevin Bacon, the 1980 cult classic follows a group of teenage camp counsellors who,...

With a title like Nightmare on 34th Street, I was initially hoping for a horror take on the classic Christmas story Miracle on 34th Street but I soon realised this wasn’t the case as this started shaping up as a horror anthology. But that’s okay. A horror anthology with some loose connections on that story could be pretty good too. But this wasn’t the case either. They’ve just chucked that kind of Christmas-sounding title on this Christmas horror anthology.
After the initial disappointment, I was ready to enjoy the movie though. Horror anthologies are a subgenre I generally enjoy but Nightmare on 34th Street is, at best, a mixed bag.
Initially, what turned out to be my favourite segment I didn’t actually like at first because...

Tales of musicians who sold their soul for fame are common enough, Crossroads, Trick or Treat, Dark Roads 79 and The 27 Club are just a few examples. The Devil Went Down to Islington is a little different, however. It tells the tale of a music teacher who makes a Faustian bargain while drunk, only to panic when he realizes what he’s done.
It actually opens like a bizarre action film with Father Crowley using switchblade crosses to fight a pair of masked figures who are attacking a panicked man. He defeats them, but in the end Satan claims another soul.
John Robertson Has had a morning from hell, and he hasn’t even sold his soul yet. He fails to save his cat from the garbage truck, then an Ofsted inspector shows up,...

Zombies seem to be a popular focus in the horror genre at the moment, with TV shows The Walking Dead bringing a new rejuvenated interest in the horror sub-genre. The success of the series seeming to be infectious, with a variety of zombie themed projects coming out every week, although most shuffle along without offering anything new to the genre.
Amongst the horde however you occasionally come across a breakout horror such as Shaun of the Dead (2004). A film which offers something different to the normal formula as both a homage and parody of the sub-genre. Where Shaun (Simon Pegg) pays homage to the influence of George Romero’s “of the Dead” series, Shed of the Dead uses Shaun as a familiar template and follows a similar infected vein with the balance of horror and comedy. Throw in amazing cast of horror icons, role play fantasy and a more sophomoric humour,...
