Nicholas Pinnock (“For Life”) will play world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali in “A God Amongst Men.”
The film, co-written and to be directed by James Newton (“2:Hrs”), also stars Christopher Eccleston (“Dodger”), and is based on the true story of Ali’s visit to Tyneside, U.K., in 1977. The film is co-written by Ian Skelton (“Hey Duggee”).
Newton said: ” ‘A God Amongst Men’ is based upon the true story of how one man, Johnny Walker, outrageously claimed that he would bring Muhammad Ali to Tyneside in 1977 to save a boxing club from closure. The list of major Hollywood tentpoles that have released in the U.S. in the past month but not yet fixed a China release date is growing ever longer — an issue of significant concern to industry players on both sides of the Pacific.
“Black Widow,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” “Jungle Cruise” and now “The Suicide Squad” have all rolled out Stateside but given no formal indication of when and whether they will debut in the world’s largest film market. Within hours, pirated versions of each have been widely accessible in China, shrinking the local pool of future ticket-goers with each day of delay.
U.S. studios will have to reign in their expectations without Chinese sales to bolster their global cumes, while Chinese exhibitors still fighting to come back from a pandemic-striken year continue to flounder. Chinese film authorities, typically tasked with the goal of growing the local...

The first import to break through China’s nearly two-month political moratorium on foreign films apparently won’t be “Black Widow” or “Space Jam: A New Legacy.” Instead, Beijing is opening its doors to an unlikely contender for August: a little-known British Christmas film about a cat.
“A Christmas Gift From Bob” — a seasonal, feel-good sequel to the uplifting 2016 biographical drama “A Street Cat Named Bob” — will hit Chinese screens on Aug. 6. The first film told the real-life story of how busker and recovering addict James Bowen turned his life around after befriending a stray cat, and was based on Bowen’s memoirs. The second finds Bowen fighting to keep Bob by his side after the local authorities attempt to take the cat away during Christmas.

Just when it feels like things can't get any worse, we have gotten word that celebrity feline Bob the Cat has sadly passed away on June 15 at 14 years old. Credited for saving the life of author and former addict James Bowen, Bob was featured in the A Street Cat Named Bob book series and movie adaptation, making the cat one of the planet's most beloved animals. "As James and Bob continued to find fans all over the world, Bob led an incredible life meeting well-wishers at book signings, travelling the world and coping with feline fame," the publisher Hodder & Stoughton said in a statement.
Heartbroken, Bowen has also spoken about the passing of his longtime companion. "Bob saved my life. It's as simple as that," Bowen stated. "He gave me so much more than companionship. With him at my side, I found a direction and purpose that I'd been missing.

Bob the Cat, whose story about helping save the life of a recovering London drug addict became the basis for several books and two movies, died Monday.
The news was announced by Hodder & Stoughton, the UK publisher behind the 2012 book A Street Cat Named Bob. It told the story of James Bowen, who in 2007 found Bob injured on the streets and took him in. The pair had come to the attention of the local press as they teamed to sell a magazine to raise funds for the homeless.
The book, a bestseller in the UK, spawned three sequels and a feature film, 2016’s A Street Cat Named Bob, that starred Bob himself and Luke Treadaway as Bowen. It was directed by Roger Spottiswoode. A second movie, A Gift From Bob, starring Treadaway and based on another of the four books, is now in postproduction.

Stars like Jason Statham, Gerard Butler, Liam Neeson and Ben Affleck have brought a semblance of stability to an unsettled American Film Market this week.
The boom in streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon along with the emergence of new services from Disney, Apple and Warner Bros. has disrupted the traditional business model for the independent sector.

Independently-produced U.S. action-disaster picture, “Hurricane Heist” took second place with $7.03 million, playing over 40,000 screening sessions per day. Its director, Rob Cohen is a familiar figure in the Middle Kingdom and previously directed “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” in China in 2008.

Princess Kate’s red carpet return!
The royal mom of two shined alongside Prince William at Sunday night’s BAFTA Awards in London.
The last time she stepped out on the red carpet was in November for the premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob.
And Kate sparkled just as bright as her bejeweled pear-shaped earrings in a bespoke Alexander McQueen creation.
The black, off-the-shoulder, floor-length gown was covered in a delicate pattern of green and violet flowers.
Kate bared her shoulders in the stunning dress, which featured a Bardot neckline, fitted bodice and full tiered skirt with black satin ribbon.

A man turns his back on his perfect life and sleeps with an underage prostitute in this well-acted but unlikely drama
Annabel (Ruta Gedmintas), a gallerist, and her architect husband, Joe (Tom Hughes), are ridiculously good-looking, wealthy enough to afford two or maybe more homes, and about to have their first child. But their perfectly appointed life with its chunky knits and innumerable shades of taupe is about to unravel. One night, for reasons never directly explained (perhaps writer-director Jane Linfoot thinks they are obvious and self-explanatory), Joe pays for sex with Lily (Tasha Connor), an underage girl who picks up customers out of a local pizza parlour. Then, a series of unfortunate and somewhat unlikely coincidences put Lily and Annabel on a collision course, leading to pointedly understated drama about how the middle classes fail to see the suffering and exploitation right in front of their retrousse noses. The fall specialized season (with attached awards campaigns) is going into high gear. This weekend brings the release of Amazon Studios Sundance pickup “Manchester by the Sea” (Roadside Attractions), one of the year’s most anticipated films, to a strong initial response in its first two cities. Also, Focus Features released buzzy festival hit “Nocturnal Animals” somewhat wider to enough interest to suggest ongoing adult audiences ahead.
None of these grosses challenge 2016’s top limited releases, though, consistent with what has been a decline in overall specialty numbers this year. But they join “Moonlight” and “Loving” among successful launches that perform well enough to keep their awards chances alive along with their commercial prospects.
That’s in stark contrast with Ang Lee’s technological experiment “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.” After what seemed to be a decent start in two theaters last weekend, its wider national break ranks with...

Warner Bros. brought their Harry Potter universe back to theaters this weekend with their first spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which was expected to dominate at the box office. This big screen adventure, which is set decades before Harry Potter stepped foot in Hogwarts, had no trouble taking the top spot, bringing in an impressive $75 million in its opening weekend. This magical adventure also scored big in international markets with $143.3 million, for a worldwide total of $218.3 million, from a whopping $180 million budget.
Box Office Mojo reports that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earned an impressive $18,098 from 4,144 theaters in its opening weekend. That massive roll out is more than twice as much as the other newcomers that hit theaters this weekend, Open Road Films' Bleed For This (1,549 theaters) and Stx Entertainment's The Edge of Seventeen (1,945 theaters), neither of which managed to crack the top 5. The weekend didn't quite turn out as Mojo had forecast as the top twelve grossed a combined $149.4 million compared to Mojo's forecast, which foresaw the top twelve grossing over $180 million. Part of the blame lay on an over-estimation of the weekend's top new release, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which did deliver a solid #1 opening, but couldn't match Mojo's lofty expectations. To that point, the vast majority of films fell below expectations including the weekend's two other new wide releases, The Edge of Seventeen and Bleed for This, neither of which managed to top $5 million as well as Sony's expansion of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, which can't be looked at as anything more than a flop at this point. Yet, there were some other notable performances to focus on, particularly in limited release where Amazon and Roadside's Manchester by the Sea delivered strong opening results and Moonlight...

It should be no contest for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which could have a runaway victory with a whopping $72.5 million.
While $72.5 million is certainly a great opening by many standards, it would actually mark the "worst" opening in the Harry Potter franchise. As of now, the lowest opening weekend in the Harry Potter franchise is the $77.1 million earned by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2007. Still, that tally...

After easily taking the box office crown last weekend, Marvel's Doctor Strange went up against three newcomers, Paramount's Arrival, Universal's Almost Christmas and EuropaCorp's Shut In. While our original projections had the race much closer, Doctor Strange had no trouble repeating at the top, taking in an estimated $43 million. Trolls also remained in second place with $35 million, dropping just 24.8% in its second weekend, while Doctor Strange dropped just 49.8%, both of which are impressive in their own right.
Doctor Strange remained in 3,882 theaters this weekend, the same as its opening frame, earning a respectable $11,085 per-screen average, down from its $21,911 per-screen average on opening weekend. This superhero adventure will likely be playing in roughly more than 1,600 theaters than its new competitors this weekend. Box Office Mojo reports that Arrival debuted in 2,317 theaters, while Almost Christmas arrived in 2,376 theaters and Shut In arrived in 2,058 theaters.

Ben Affleck action thriller tames A Street Cat Named Bob and Nocturnal Animals as Doctor Strange hangs on to the top spot
The weekend after Doctor Strange, and two weeks before Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the release calendar paused for breath. But, despite the lack of any blockbusters, four movies with individual commercial appeal arrived: The Accountant, starring Ben Affleck; bestseller adaptation A Street Cat Named Bob; period romance The Light Between Oceans, with Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander; and Tom Ford’s starry awards contender Nocturnal Animals.

Much to no one's surprise, Marvel debuted yet another box office hit with their new Phase 3 adventure Doctor Strange, which took in just over $85 million last weekend, slightly ahead of the $84.9 million estimates on Sunday. This weekend, three new releases try to knock the Sorcerer Supreme off the top spot, with Paramount's Arrival, Universal's Almost Christmas and EuropaCorp's Shut In arriving in wide release. Despite this trio of new competitors, we're predicting that Doctor Strange should have no problem hanging on to the top spot with $43.4 million.
Doctor Strange debuted in 3,882 theaters last weekend, pulling in an impressive $21,911 per-screen average. While it remains to be seen if that theater count will be altered this weekend, as it stands now, this superhero adventure will likely be playing in roughly more than 1,600 theaters than its new competitors this weekend. Box Office Mojo reports that Almost Christmas and Arrival will both debut in roughly 2,200 theaters,...
