Pixar’s next film, “Elio,” is set to open on June 20, only a week after “How to Train Your Dragon,” and the box office predictions aren’t all that great.
The most recent prediction for the box office opening is ranging from $35 million to $45 million, and long-term projections have the film at around $300 million.
To put this into perspective, “Onward” opened to $39.1 million and “Lightyear” opened to about $50.5 million. “Lightyear” was a box office bomb.
Other films in this opening range include “Elemental” at $29.6 million, “The Good Dinosaur” at $39.1 million (which would be about $53 million adjusted for inflation), and “Toy Story,” which opened to $29.1 million (about $63 million adjusted for inflation.)
“Coco” and “Cars 3” opened to between $50.8 million-$53 million in 2017.
If the film does hit the $35-$45 million range, it places “Elio” towards the bottom for Pixar debuts.
This isn’t good, given the estimated budget for the film ranges between $ 200 and almost $300 million.

Mikey Madison found worldwide fame when she portrayed the role of Ani in the recently released iconic film, Anora. Following her success, Madison didn’t quickly jump from one project to another and chose her movies carefully.
From replacing Sydney Sweeney to getting cast in a re-imagined tale of author Edgar Allen Poe, Mikey Madison’s career is reaching newer heights of fame. However, it has been rumored that her upcoming movie… is for the TikTok class and will likely have several meme-able scenes!
Mikey Madison’s next movie is very meme-able
That’s what the sources have been saying ever since the movie was announced. Helmed by A24 Studios (which is known for movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Moonlight), Madison will star in a film titled The Masque of the Red Death.

If you feel it, chase it — no wait, wrong movie. But after nearly 20 years, Disney may still be looking to chase the magic of one iconic character. The Pixar movie Cars was released in 2006, and it's gone on to spawn sequels, as well as theme park rides, and more. According to the voice of Lightning McQueen himself, Owen Wilson, Disney is still looking for that perfect "Ka-Chow." Talking with Collider's Christina Radish for his Apple TV+ series Stick, Wilson explains that he didn't expect the longevity of the character at all and says:
"Of course, I could never have imagined that it would continue on the way it has. Just a week ago, I was recording something. They’re doing something with Lightning McQueen that I went in for and found myself saying, 'Ka-Chow.' I asked them, 'There must be a bank of Ka-Chows that you have at this point.

Plot: Pryce Cahill is an over-the-hill, ex-pro golfer whose career was prematurely derailed 20 years ago. After the collapse of his marriage and getting fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store, Pryce hedges his bets and future entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom named Santi. This heartfelt, feel-good comedy is about a found family and their relationships set within the world of golf as it has never been shown before.
Review: The last time Owen Wilson played a veteran athlete training the next generation superstar in his sport was in 2017’s Cars 3. It's generally agreed that John Lasseter's 2006 film "Cars" is one of Pixar's less ambitious movies. Other movies in the Pixar canon tickled the imagination by presenting the secret worlds of commonplace beings. "Toy Story" posited that our toys came to life when we weren't looking (which we always kinda knew was true anyway). "A Bug's Life" saw ants as arranged into a tiny, secret society, while "Finding Nemo" did the same with fish. "Monsters, Inc." said that closet monsters were real, but that they only scare children as an element of a boring, blue-collar job. Back in monster land, the monsters are boring like your dad.
"Cars" was a departure for the studio, as there was no secret being revealed. "Cars" took place in a parallel universe wherein living beings were replaced by anthropomorphic vehicles. They had eyes instead of windshields, and mouths on their bumpers. They seemed to eat gasoline.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, it seemed as if Pixar could do no wrong. The animation studio, in league with Disney, pushed forward the idea of all-computer-animated feature films back in 1995 with the release of "Toy Story," gaining a lot of critical attention for its clever writing and penchant for heart-rending sentimentality. It wouldn't be until the release of "Cars 2" in 2011 that critics would begin to cool to the studio. And even still, "Cars 2" was a $559 million hit.
In the 2010s, Pixar began to skew further and further away from original ideas and lean heavier into sequels or prequels to its earlier hits. Indeed, of the 10 Pixar features released in that decade, six were part of an established franchise. Some of these films were excellent, but the studio nevertheless seemed a few years beyond its creative peak.

It wasn't Wolf Man, and it certainly wasn't Better Man, but Dog Man has dominated the January box office. Based on the children's graphic novel of the same name by Dav Pilkey, Dog Man is a spin-off and story within the story of Captain Underpants, which got a DreamWorks Animated movie back in 2017. In a premise that sounds like kids' first body horror, Dog Man sees a dog's face sewn onto a man's body to become a supercop while going up against many different types of villains.
According to Deadline, Dog Man brought an impressive $35.3 million in its opening weekend based on the estimates (final numbers will be recorded Monday morning). This easily gives Dog Man the biggest opening weekend of 2025 so far, beating out the weekend of Jan. 5, 2025, where Mufasa: The Lion King grossed $23 million in its third weekend of release. Cars 3 is the lowest-grossing entry in the series, but there is one big reason to love it. The movie fell short of any anticipated audience reception by confirming Lightning McQueen's retirement to introduce Cruz Ramirez. Yet, Cars 3 arguably has the strongest plot of all three Cars movies from Pixar. The final installment is an exceptional conclusion to the trilogy and an apt end to McQueen's character growth. Cars 2’s weaker narrative highlighted the difficulty of bringing the franchise to a satisfying conclusion in Cars 3.
The last chapter remains loyal to the roots of the Cars franchise and focuses on the rapidly changing racing industry and its indifference to the racing car — who is determined to retire on his own terms. The movie also has some remarkable visuals with a greater depth than its counterparts, which is one of the things that sets Cars 3 apart from the other two films.

While almost all of Pixar’s movies were well-received critically, six of their outings have the unfortunate distinction of ruining the studio’s staggering streak at the Academy Awards. All of Pixar’s movies have their fans, and the studio’s output is often viewed as some of the best family animations that Hollywood has to offer. Since the studio blazed onto the scene with the 1995 blockbuster Toy Story, Pixar married smart scripts, captivating characters, and original ideas with groundbreaking animation. Not only was the studio a leader in 3D animation, but Pixar also had the quality to back up this novelty.

Pixar continues bringing a variety of animated stories almost every year and is focusing on sequels again. Among them now is Cars, but this isnt the Pixar franchise that needs a sequel. Pixar is still one of the most important studios in the world of animation, and it continues to consistently release at least one movie every year. Pixar has explored all types of fantasy worlds in its movies, such as one where toys come to life and one where monsters exist parallel to the human world, and it has also explored other cultures, as it did in Coco and Luca.
Although Pixar has mostly focused on original stories, it has also granted sequels to some of its most popular movies. Toy Story is Pixars biggest franchise, but there are also the worlds of Cars, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Inside Out. Although Pixar had already teased reboots...

This year's D23 should have seen the return of the multiple-time Piston Cup winner, Lightning McQueen, as Disney accidentally revealed Cars 4 was once part of the event's line-up. It's been seven years since the word "Kachow!" was blasted from theater speakers in Cars 3, and like all great Disney Pixar movies, fans want more.
Thanks to an official survey on the D23 website (via @HollywoodHandle on X), fans now know that Cars 4 could be in development. The survey asked fans which project they're most looking forward to at the Disney-centric convention. Surprisingly, Cars 4 was listed among the movies. Cars 4 hasn't officially been announced by Disney or Pixar, and some audiences believed Cars 3 was the definitive end to the franchise. It is now expected that Disney will announce the fourth installment very soon to get ahead of the leak.

Noting the recent trend of Ben Affleck’s “Air,” Matt Johnson’s “Blackberry,” Eva Longoria’s “Flamin’ Hot,” and, though perhaps a bit on the silly side, Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted,” there seems to be an increasing market for stories about consumer goods and marketing. Deadline announced Wednesday that the latest to get in the act are Judd Apatow and Steven Spielberg with a picture called “Cola Wars,” all about the rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
“Cola Wars,” which Spielberg will produce and Apatow will direct, is written by Jason Shuman and Ben Queen. Shuman is best known for co-creating the series “Acapulco” on Apple TV + and was an executive producer on “Winning Time,” another nostalgia-soaked based-on-reality project about the peak years of the Los Angeles Lakers. Queen’s credits include “Cars 2” and “Cars 3.” The project is set up at Sony.

Judd Apatow directs, Steven Spielberg produces, as Sony moves ahead with Cola Wars, a movie about Coca Cola and Pepsi’s battle.
Just recently, we covered a report which looked at how Judd Apatow, the one-time king of Hollywood comedies, was struggling to get original projects off the ground. It’s been a few years since Apatow’s period as a director and ‘super-producer’, during which he shepherded lots of popular comedies through the studio system.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has selected Apatow to direct Cola Wars. It’s a drama that will recount the fierce battle between industry titan Coca Cola and upstart Pepsi in the 1980s.
We first learned of the project back in February, along with the claim that Sony had paid more than a million dollars for a pitch. Not the script mind, just the pitch. Jason Shuman and Ben Queen will be drafting the screenplay.

Judd Apatow has signed on to direct “Cola Wars,” a film recounting the ’80s battle between Coca-Cola and Pepsi, with Steven Spielberg producing through Amblin Entertainment, TheWrap has learned.
Jason Shuman, co-creator of the Apple TV+ show “Acapulco,” is co-writing the screenplay with “Cars 3” co-writer Ben Queen.
The film will recount Pepsi’s challenge to Coca-Cola’s decades of rule as the world’s top soda, infamously leading to Coke changing its recipe to sell “New Coke,” which led to widespread horror.
The project is said to be in very early development, as Sony only just acquired the film as a pitch back in April.
Apatow most recently directed the 2022 Netflix comedy “The Bubble” and the HBO documentary “George Carlin’s American Dream.” He is repped by WME and Mosaic.
The project was first reported by Deadline.

Exclusive: Judd Apatow has attached to direct and Steven Spielberg has come aboard to produce Cola Wars, the film in development at Sony. Spielberg will produce through his Amblin Entertainment banner.
Deadline revealed back in April that the studio bought the project for $1 million-plus as a pitch, telling the true story of Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola. It uncapped the “Cola Wars” of the mid-1980s, which included everything from Michael Jackson’s fiery mishap to the New Coke debacle, as the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender (Pepsi) vying for the No. 1 spot (Coca-Cola).
The Cola Wars pitch is being written by Jason Shuman and Ben Queen. Shuman is the co-creator/writer of Apple’s hit show Acapulco and was executive producer on HBO’s Winning Time, and the producer of 2022’s Oscar-nominated indie To Leslie.

Pixar has earned its place as the powerhouse studio in the field of animation, and as such it has seen a lot of success, but one specific trilogy is the studios wildest movie franchise for various reasons. Pixar began its reign in animation in 1995 with Toy Story, the first entirely computer-animated feature film, which marked the beginning of years of high-quality animated movies. Toy Story continues to be Pixars biggest and most successful franchise, but it has also built other, smaller franchises.
Pixar began with a story about talking toys with feelings, and since then, it has explored other fun and unlikely scenarios, such as talking bugs, a world of monsters, rats who are exceptional chefs, and more. At the time of writing, and leaving Toy Story aside, Pixar has five franchises, some bigger than others: Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, and Inside Out. While they all explore...

One of the best characters in the original Cars and the judge of Radiator Springs, Doc Hudson is responsible for making Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) fix the road he destroys, and he does not appreciate the arrogant, entitled race car. Later, Lightning finds out that Doc used to be a champion racer himself,...

Cars 2 is the worst Pixar film, but sets up the potential for a spy spin-off series within the franchise. The introduction of espionage in Cars 2 offers a fresh perspective, but the film struggles to captivate audiences. Despite its flaws, Cars 2's spy storyline could pave the way for a reinvention of the Cars franchise.
Cars 2 is the worst Cars film in the series, but for all its flaws, it has the potential to set up the best spin-off that would follow a $7.8 billion franchise. Cars 2 is not only the worst film of all three but also possibly the worst Pixar movie ever made, ranking last of all 28 Pixar movies. While Mater is a heartwarming character, there is just too much going on for Cars 2 to captivate audiences. In general, the Cars franchise is not Pixar's best, but Cars and Cars 3 are objectively bettertwo films focusing solely on racing.

When my younger brother was growing up, he went through an extreme car phase. We're talking collecting Micro Machines of every variety and cruising around in an electric kids Ride-On Jeep. What I'm saying is, when Pixar's "Cars" films proved hugely popular with younger Millennials and the first wave of Gen Z-ers starting in the '00s, I understood why. I was there, Gandalf.
Out of all of the animation powerhouse's franchises, "Cars" has always been the most contentious. The "Cars" universe itself makes no sense, which has spawned all manner of dark fan theories, including that these movies take place in a post-apocalyptic future where cars gained sentience Skynet-style and murdered all the humans. Also, the personalities of the vehicles tend to be based on broad cultural or ethnic stereotypes associated with their models. Meanwhile, their personal interests are primarily limited to racing because, again, they're all cars,...

Pixar has an esteemed track record for producing high-quality animated films and successful sequels. Cars 2 is considered one of Pixar's weakest sequels due to its departure from the original concept. Films like Cars 3, Monsters University, and Toy Story 4 improved sequels by returning to the emotional core of the original stories.
Pixar is an incredible production company when it comes to original animated films, and their track record for producing great sequels is also pretty outstanding. Pixar has an illustrious history of putting out high-quality animated films and pushing the boundaries of what's possible in computer-generated animation. In addition, the company has always had a knack for delivering stories that were packed with emotion and fun for the entire family.

There was a time when Pixar could do no wrong. As a result, everyone was shocked when Toy Story spin-off Lightyear underperformed, though that did come after former Disney CEO Bob Chapek made the controversial decision to dump titles like Luca, Soul, and Turning Red on Disney+ during the pandemic.
Elemental struggled at the box office last year (even if it managed to shake off "flop" status once its theatrical run concluded) and all eyes are on Inside Out 2 to now "save" Pixar.
The sequel is currently eyeing a $135 million global debut and early reviews could help it exceed expectations at the box office.

Toy Story 5 will break Pixar records with the most movies set in the same continuity, surpassing Cars. The Planes spinoffs tie into the Cars universe with help from key Pixar figures like John Lasseter. Despite the popular Pixar Theory, not all Pixar movies are part of the same canon, but hidden references imply a connection between the films.
Pixar has always been an animation trendsetter, but Toy Story 5 will mean the film series becoming truly unique among the studio's past works. Currently, another Pixar property is leading in one impressive category, but the fifth Toy Story movie will break this record when the movie is released in 2026. The return of Buzz and Woody could represent a much-needed financial win for Pixar, with 2017's Coco being the last original movie from the studio to make an impact at the box office. Watching Kung Fu Panda 4, I couldn’t help but think of Cars 3 or Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, which were both “passing the torch” sequels that didn’t really work out that way. Cars 3 all but ended the franchise; while Ghost Protocol was so badass, people fell in love with Tom Cruise all over again, making the notion of him passing on his franchise to a would-be-successor (in that case Jeremy Renner) ludicrous. The battle between Coca-Cola and Pepsi is heading to cinemas, as Sony pays seven figures for movie pitch on the subject.
As Hollywood’s tectonic plates continue to rearrange themselves in the wake of a disruptive few years, one type of film that seems to be rising to prominence is that of the product movie. In the last year or so we’ve seen Tetris, Air, Flamin’ Hot (the Cheetos origin story) and Barbie all land with varying degrees of impact upon our shared cultural consciousness.
Obviously, Barbie is something of a special case, distinguishable from the other films as it treats its product in an entirely distinct fashion and found great success doing so. The other films on that list told a more straightforward story about the origin of an iconic product and as we’ve already predicted, they won’t be the last to do so.

Disney is ramping up production of animated sequels, making it more likely that these 10 films could happen. Some of the biggest franchises, like Inside Out, Moana, and Zootopia, are set to release sequels in the coming years. Other popular picks for sequels include Big Hero 6, Cars, Incredibles, Encanto, Wreck-It Ralph, Monsters, Inc., and Tangled.
Disney's upcoming animated movie slate is full of sequels, making these 10 sequels to classic Disney films much more likely. Although Disney owns some of the most recognizable intellectual properties in movie history, the company stayed away from making theatrical sequels for the longest time, with thier rare sequels typically going directly to DVD. However, the release of Ralph Breaks the Internet signaled a change for the studio, reigniting a pattern of theatrical sequel releases. Disney is seriously ramping up the production of these animated sequels, meaning that there is a chance that these 10 films could happen.

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has everything you could ask for from an animated Oscar contender, including sterling reviews, stellar box office and a proven awards track record. There’s one potential hitch, though: it’s a sequel. Pixar's recent financial struggles can be attributed to the underperformance of the recent movies Turning Red, Lightyear, and Elemental. Reviving one particular franchise with a fourth installment could help Pixar regain its financial footing, as the series has a history of merchandise success and appeal to younger audiences. However, the likelihood of the sequel happening decreased with the announcement of a spinoff series, and even if it does happen, replicating the merchandising success of the original film would require significant changes to the franchise.

It would be fair to say, even without crunching numbers, that Pixar has a far better percentage of box-office and critical wins than losses, with total box-office receipts of $15,407,450,839 and only one film, Cars 2, with a Rotten rating. Just how have they managed to stay successful? Is it their ground-breaking animation? The imaginative and clever storylines? The deep, emotional core at the center of each film, as noted by Business Insider? Maybe, but perhaps the reason is a little more mystical in nature. Need a clue? A look at the top 10 critically-favored Pixar films on Rotten Tomatoes all have one thing in common. That one thing is Pixar's own "good luck charm," actor John Ratzenberger.
