Fuego

6/10

Thrilling movie contains intense drama, thought-provoking issues and being acceptable enough.

Carlos (José Coronado) is a policeman. One day, a bomb in his car kills his wife and leaves his 10-year-old daughter without legs; he remains intact. Eleven years later he seems like a different person. He lives in another city, Barcelona, he has another job, in an important security company, and his daughter named Alba (Aida Folch) seems to have overcome that hard trauma, although certain consequences are indelible. He, after years of severe psychological treatment, also seems to return to being a person to whom life has given a second chance. In Lequeitio he has started a relationship with a woman called Ohiana (Leyre Berrocal) whose husband is in prison condemned for eight murders. But in the depths of his being there is only room for one feeling that consumes his core: hatred. And a single objective: Revenge.

This is a thoughtful and brooding drama about disturbing characters who suffer from ancient records. An interesting but slow-moving drama concerning on a few roles who suffer the consequences of their unfortunate pasts. 'Fuego' is an uneven Spanish thriller that does not quite define its engaging proposal of combining suspense and action with the historical past of our country and the ghosts of the terrorist organizaction ETA. The script takes us into the human reality on these characters, victims of their own inner ghosts and distresses with which they must pay for their sad lives. Dealing with thorny issues, such as: terrorism, oblivion , redemption and vengeance. And with that appealing plot , I welcome the with which the story is treated and in which stands out the gray atmosphere that provides photography. The main strength of the film, besides the adequate interpretations, is the way in which our protagonists bring to life the return of that tragic and ominous past. The past returns as if it were a nightmare, but he never forgot the past, the hate, the suffering of that accident forcing the starring to return to be one person who thought she had given up. But the whole film lacks aspects that I consider relevant ; furthermore, being slow-paced , and some boring, adding that a large part of the film is spoken in Basque language, with the heaviness that comes with habitually reading subtitles. Stars a man well played by José Coronado who drags his own demons, unfortunately for the people who surrround him, and Laire Berrocal as a woman whose unsettling past returns with unexpected results . Directed by Luis Marías, who puts his own script into images, the story achieves its best moments when it is less ambitious and focuses on the most everyday details of the personal relationships that arise between the characters, the ex-police officer Coronado with the woman Berrocal and her son, the daughter Folch with her caregiver Adalid , but it partially fails when it emphasizes the drama of the situations the terrorist attack, the aftermath of the police officer's daughter, the relentless vendetta, the twisted ending. With the always notable José Coronado as lead, the remaining cast moves from overacting to emotive, such as enjoyable Leyre Berrocal, Aida Folch as the bitter daughter and fun Jaime Adalid.

Here it is worth highlighting the production work of Gerardo Herrero, this important producer and director has a long career, and his efforts and subsequent success in promoting Latin American co-productions is testimony to his success, as he has financed a number of films from both continents. Great producer of big hits , Gerardo Herrero being especially known for The Secret of your ears (2009), Sin Retorno (2010) , Balada Triste de Trompeta (2010) , Crimenes De Oxford (2008) and El Hijo De La Novia (2001). He also directed some good films such as ¨Corredor Nocturno¨ , ¨Principio Arquímedes¨ , ¨Crimen Galindez¨ , ¨Frontera Sur¨, ¨Territorio Comanche¨ , ¨Desvio a Paraíso¨ , ¨Al Acecho¨ and ¨Heroína¨. This irregular and thoughtful film was professionally directed by Luís Marías. Here filmmaker Mariás directs a decent thriller in his usual style , without leaving a trace the committed and sharp themes, in terms of dramatic and narrative excitement . Luis Marías is a prestigious writer, producer and director. He's written: Tres mentiras, Ola de crimenes, La isla de las mentiras, UCO, Flores negras, El criminal, Maitena. And he has directed a few films and TV series, such as: Fuego (2014), Todo por la pasta (1991), Bilbao-Bizkaia Ext: Día (2015), Gernika bajo las bombas (2012) , X (2002), among others.
