What happened to 1990's 10 most promising movie executives?
Simon Brew Sep 2, 2016

Premiere magazine highlighted 10 movie executives to watch in 1990. So what happened to them?

In its May 1990 issue, the sadly-missed Us version of Premiere magazine published an article, highlighting ten young movie executives, and suggesting that these were people with very big futures ahead of them in the industry.

Given that much is written about movie executives, without actually digging much deeper to find out who they actually are, I thought it was worth tracing what happened to these ten, and – 26 years later – whether Premiere was correct in saluting them as the future of the industry. So, er, I did...

'Stranger Things': How Netflix's Retro Hit Resurrects the Eighties
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
It's one thing to set a TV series in the 1980s; it's a whole other thing, however, to make it feel like it was actually shot during the Reagan-and-Rubik's-Cube era. Matt and Ross Duffer's new Netflix series Stranger Things is full of nostalgic nods to the decade and its pop-cultural products, but it's also uncommonly rigorous about getting the details just right — whether it's the many pitch-perfect music cues, the hat-tipping nods and homages to Eighties movies, or simply nailing the cringeworthy fashion statements of the day (those Mom jeans!

Clive Owen Is Perfectly Cast In First Trailer For The Confirmation
On the face of it, it’s a simple story of a boy bonding with his father. But, like all good writing, there is a great deal more to be found, just below the surface – as the new trailer for The Confirmation corroborates. Divorce, past misdeeds, the perception of others, the quest for redemption – this film, that stars Clive Owen, would seem to encompass everything about moving forward in life, and embracing uncertainty. All of that adds up to something that has the potential to be a wonderfully life-affirming experience.

Written and directed by Bob Nelson – whose screenplay for 2013’s Nebraska earned him an Academy Award nomination – The Confirmation sees Jordan Lieberher (Aloha), Matthew Modine (Proof), Robert Forster (Olympus Has Fallen), Stephen Tobolowsky (The Goldbergs) and Tim Blake Nelson (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) join Clive Owen (The Knick), Maria Bello (Prisoners) and Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) in the cast. This is the directorial debut of Nelson,...

Summer of Darkness: When Did Summer TV Get So Grim?
Think of your summer leisure time -- beaches, baseball, barbecues, vacations, camping, fairs, fireworks, sunshine... What can the TV programmers offer to pull you away from all that?

How about monsters, murders, alien invaders, serial killers, horror, gore, and violence?

Seems counterintuitive, right? And yet, that's what this summer's TV fare looks like, a parade of grimness and bleakness at a time when people are most likely to seek escapism.

This year's summer of darkness began with the launch on Fox last month of "Wayward Pines," the new series based on Blake Crouch''s novels and featuring the signature spooky touch of "Sixth Sense" and "Signs" director M. Night Shyamalan. So far, the show's highlights have included vehicular mayhem, cultish creepiness, mysterious conspiracies, summary executions, and hints of lurking monsters.

Not to be outdone, NBC has "Aquarius," with David Duchovny putting on his Fox "Creepy" Mulder hat as a 1960s...

Few Days Left to Support Bill Plympton's New Animated Project 'Revengeance'
Last month Bill Plympton's outrageously funny and dazzling animated romance "Cheatin’" opened in theaters across the country and on Vimeo on Demand. The award-winning film was Kickstarter-backed by Pylmpton's fans around the world and has received widespread critical acclaim. Now, the “King of Indie Animation” has returned to Kickstarter to ask animation fans to support his new Tarantino-esque animated feature film, "Revengeance." The film, a biker revenge dark comedy, mark’s Plympton’s eighth animated feature. You can check out an exclusive preview of the movie Here.

For the first time in his career, Plympton is collaborating on a film; co-creating "Revengeance" with underground animator and cartoonist Jim Lujan ("Sanjourno Must Die," "Spike and Mike," "Freakdaddy"). The talented voice cast includes Dave Foley ("The Kids in the Hall"), Kristina Wong, Lalo Alcaraz, Ken Mora, Jim Lujan himself, and actor Matthew Modine.

Modine, a long-time supporter of independent animation, is best known as “Pvt. Joker” in Stanley Kubrick’s "Full Metal Jacket," and as “Deputy Commissioner Peter Foley” in Christopher Nolan’s "The Dark Knight Rises." He can next be seen in this Summer’s new TNT drama, "Proof," opposite Jennifer Beals. He previously voiced two short films ("Santa," "The Fascist Years" and "The Flying House") by Plympton and executive produced Plympton’s "Cheatin’."

“Bill’s new feature with Jim Lujan looks like a blast. I’m excited to voice both ‘Sid,’ a biker gang member, and ‘Master,’ a cult leader! It’s fun doing character work like this and I love traditional hand-drawn animation,” said Matthew Modine.

Plympton will produce, animate, and direct "Revengeance" while Lujan will write, design, compose music, and voice many of the characters. Producer Adam Rackoff who served as Executive Producer on Plympton’s "The Flying House" and "Cheatin’" is returning to Executive Produce "Revengeance." The film has already begun production and is based on an original screenplay written by Lujan.

Plympton’s Cheatin’ was a Kickstarter darling. The campaign, launched in 2012, raised $100,916, nearly $26,000 past the fundraising goal.

Commented Bill Plympton: “I met Jim Lujan years ago when he interviewed me about my film Idiots and Angels, and he gave me some of his DVDs. I was really impressed by his work and asked him if he’d be interested in collaborating on a film. When he sent me the script for 'Revengeance' it was like discovering a new world---the underbelly of Los Angeles with bikers, gangsters, drug dealers, crooked politicians, and prostitutes. It was really dark and fascinating. I was so excited to make his film and thus the pre- production journey began. It’s a delight to come back to Kickstarter and officially launch 'Revengeance!' I think Kickstarter is the future for independent filmmaking.”

Added Jim Lujan: “Getting to know Bill through the years has really been inspiring. He truly is the “king of indie animation” and such a great person. Bill has kicked doors down and allowed me to learn from him. I couldn’t ask for a better collaborator on 'Revengeance' and we are thrilled to get this project off the ground.”

There is only week left to support this promising and unique project. Supporters can receive a variety of rewards including signed DVDs, Blu-rays, rare artwork, original animation drawings, and personal caricatures by Plympton. For the right price, fans can even have their likeness animated into the film as an “extra.”

Other rewards for the "Revengeance" campaign include:

-A private link to the finished film for a pledge of only $15 or more,

-An exclusive "Revengeance" postcard autographed by Plympton for pledges of $35 or more,

-An HD Blu-ray of the film hand-signed by Plympton for pledges of $75 or more.

-For backers who can pledge $100, you can get either an original animation drawing from "Revengeance" or a collection of limited edition caricature prints from Bill’s early years as an illustrator.

-Those who pledge $300 can get a classic animation drawing from one "Your Face," The Tune," "How to Kiss" or Plympton's MTV work

-Fans who pledge $400 or $499 will be able to select a classic production cel or drawing from "Your Face," The Tune," "How to Kiss" or Plympton's MTV work

- $500 or more, will get you “Bill Plympton’s Super Fan Package” and a “special thanks” credit at the end of the film. This package includes nearly all of Plympton’s animated films and books, with everything autographed (6 DVDs, 2 CDs, 2 posters, and 3 books).

-For pledges $1,000 or more, fans receive an original 8.5 x 11 in Wanted poster featuring a caricature of themselves hand-drawn by Plympton.

-For the first time, fans can be animated into a Plympton film as an “extra” for pledges of $1,500 or more.

For the complete list of rewards, please visit the "Revengeance" Kickstarter page.

Jere Burns, Rashida Jones, Deon Cole, Hayes MacArthur, Andree Vermeulen, and Jagger in Angie Tribeca (2016)
Here Are the New TNT and TBS Shows
Jere Burns, Rashida Jones, Deon Cole, Hayes MacArthur, Andree Vermeulen, and Jagger in Angie Tribeca (2016)
TBS unveiled the promos for its upcoming comedies, while sister network TNT presented its upcoming dramas. Some of the shows look promising! Some less so. And some, even less. Let's take a look.Angie Tribeca stars Rashida Jones and was created by Steve and Nancy Carell. Think Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Buzzy's is set in a barbershop. Warning: Contains Boston accents. Your Family or Mine is about how terrible families are. Aren't families just the worst? Boy, they sure are. Proof stars Jennifer Beals and Matthew Modine as a doctor and an eccentric billionaire, respectively. They want to know what happens when people die! (We all want to know that, guys.) Public Morals is a '60s-set cop show with Ed Burns. Don't confuse it with TNT's failed '60s-set cop show Mob City. (Or … do.) Transporter: The Series is a Canadian import. The Librarians is based on TNT's popular TV movies.

Fox Cancels “Enlisted,” NBC Renews “Svu” and “Witches of East End” Cast a Mysterious Stranger
News

Hgtv was planning on airing a new house-flipping show, Flip It Forward. However, following a revelation by Right Wing Watch that the proposed show’s hosts had a history of religious bigotry, stalking an abortion doctor and anti-gay activities like protesting pride celebrations. Hgtv has cancelled the show.

Let’s start with the good news. Despite rumors that Fox might give in to the powerful influence of producer Seth MacFarlane, Fox has decided to cancel the offensive, unfunny Dads. Unfortunately, there’s also bad news — the promising and endearing Enlisted (also the Chris Meloni sitcom Surviving Jack, which inspired strong feelings in few people). In worse news for comedy, the network also passed on two promising-sounding pilots, Dead Boss and Fatrick. Fatrick reunited Ray Ford with Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 creator Nahnatchka Kajhan. Dead Boss was a remake of a British comedy with Jane Krakowski and Amy Sedaris.

Supernatural drama Proof ordered by TNT
Is there life after death? TNT's new drama Proof, starring Jennifer Beals, investigates...

News

2015 is now set to welcome Proof, a newly commissioned ten-part drama about a brilliant surgeon tasked with investigating supernatural phenomena surrounding death.

A similar pilot of the same name, written by M. Night Shyamalan and Marti Noxon, was in development at Syfy a couple of years ago, but failed to make it to series. TNT has picked up this version written by Rob Bragin (Greek, Murphy Brown) and starring Jennifer Beals as Dr Carolyn Tyler, a surgeon charged by a cancer-stricken millionaire to find out what happens when we die.

Dr Tyler, as you might expect, has her own reasons for investigating the possibility of life after death, and the series will see her tackle concepts of reincarnation, hauntings, out-of-body experiences and the like. More news as it arrives.
