The 17 Best Video Game Movies of All Time, from ‘Mortal Kombat’ to ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’
Image
[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in October 2023. It has been updated to coincide with the theatrical release of “Until Dawn.”]

Every year, gamers ask themselves: Is this the year video game movies finally gain some respect? And the answer in the year 2025, is, unequivocally, yes.

The sea change in video game movies’ respectability at the box office kickstarted in 2023, which saw three films based on existing games release in theaters. None were outright critical successes. Quite the opposite, actually: critics saw “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as unremarkable and mediocre, “Gran Turismo” as a glorified advertisement, and “Five Nights as Freddy’s” as a complete borefest. But the movies all performed respectably at the box office, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” becoming the second-highest grossing film of the year, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” smashing expectations to become one of 2023’s biggest horror movies.

These successes foreshadowed the slow rise of video game films as a dominant trend in franchise cinema. 2024 saw “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” release to $491.9 million,...

Diabolical Theory Makes Xbox Infinitely Worse Than PlayStation, Proves More Studios Will Be Shut Down After Tango, Alpha Dog
Image
The recent closure of multiple Xbox studios, including the critically acclaimed Tango Gameworks, developer of 2023’s beloved Hi-Fi Rush, has leveled an unprecedented amount of outrage towards Microsoft from the games industry at large.

However, what made it worse was the trillion-dollar company’s executives internally telling development teams that they want “smaller games” that bring “prestige and awards” to the company, right after shuttering those four studios. Here’s why this extraneous pursuit will lead to even more studio closures within Xbox.

Xbox’s Demands Go Against Its Actions

Xbox had one prestigious game that accrued lots of awards, and it proceeded to shut down the studio that made it.

Over the past few years, Xbox has been on a spending spree of close to $100 billion. The platform holder has acquired extremely famous names in the industry like Blizzard, Bethesda, Activision, id Software, and many more. Xbox claimed that...

“All of this says to me ‘Mortal Kombat’…”: Mortal Kombat 1 Seems to Have Forgotten its Roots, and Fans Won’t Stand for It
Image
Last year, fans and critics welcomed Mortal Kombat 1 with a pretty amazing reception. Changing history once again is all possible with Liu Kang and his demigod powers to rewrite things as he pleases.

But this is not all good news. Some hardcore fans of the franchise did not love all the aspects of the game; certain details were not what they were waiting for. These fans found many of the character designs and stages to be quite bland. This discussion was very specific, with a description of all the things that this fan didn’t like. This was posted on X.

Not All Fans Are Happy With the Things That Mortal Kombat 1 Changed Mortal Kombat 1 has some fans who are not very happy with this game in particular.

The latest installment of the most violent franchise ever made has given fans some very nostalgic features, like coming to the origin...

Kratos Isn’t the Only God of War Skin to Be Appearing in Chapter 5 Season 2 of Fortnite
Image
Fortnite Battle Royale’s Chapter 5 introduced Underground as its first season, bringing in a lot of new maps and gameplay changes, along with iconic skins like Peter Griffin and Solid Snake. Going forward, it looks like a bunch of characters from God of War and the Greek mythos will make their way into the popular game, and Kratos is going to be part of the narrative.

It’s been more than a thousand days since Kratos last appeared in the game’s item shop, but according to the leaks, players will soon get the chance to see him again in the next season. That’s not all; there’s another big franchise that might end up as a collaboration midway through the season.

Characters From God of War and a Bunch of Other Legends From Greek Mythology Are on Their Way Epic has already started teasing the new season.

Official Trailer for 'Console Wars' Doc Film About Sega vs Nintendo
Blake J. Harris
"They were furious with us!" "I did not expect the US Congress to get involved." A video game war! CBS All Access has released an official trailer for a documentary titled Console Wars, from filmmakers Blake J. Harris & Jonah Tulis. This was set to premiere at this year's SXSW Film Festival, and will next launch on the CBS streaming service later this month. In 1990, Sega, a fledgling arcade company assembled a team of misfits to take on the greatest video game company in the world, Nintendo. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pit brother against brother, kids against grownups, Sonic against Mario, and also uniquely American capitalism against centuries-old Japanese tradition. For the first time ever, the men and women who fought on the front lines for Sega and Nintendo discuss this battle that defined a generation. Executive produced by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg. This sounds and looks radical!

Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Face Off in Documentary ‘Console Wars’
John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins in Super Mario Bros. (1993)
The new documentary “Console Wars” shows the history between Nintendo and Sega and how their two iconic characters Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog sparked a rivalry in the early days of video games that has lasted decades.

“Console Wars” is the first feature-length documentary that will appear on CBS All Access, and the film will make its debut on the subscription video on-demand and streaming service on Sept. 23. It was meant to premiere at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival before it was canceled due to the coronavirus.

“Console Wars” flashes back to the 8-bit era of gaming in 1990 when Sega launched and made the bold move to create a console in the Sega Genesis and a video game character that could challenge Nintendo and its domination of the video game industry. The film features interviews with some of Sega and Nintendo’s former executives and creatives and charts a story...

In an alternate universe, we could have seen the world premiere of the “Console Wars” documentary at SXSW earlier this year. In this universe, we’re waiting for the definitive movie on “Tetris,” with Taron Egerton as the lead.

Streets of Rage 4 Review: Sega Genesis Fans Will Love This Game
Shooters (2002)
Arriving when the comfort of nostalgia is perhaps needed most, Streets of Rage 4 is an absolute celebration of ’90s beat ‘em ups that stands toe-to-toe with its beloved predecessors. This surprise sequel is certainly worthy of one of the absolute gems of the Sega Genesis era.

It’s been more than 25 years since the release of Streets of Rage 3, but this fourth entry will feel familiar to anyone who’s played the previous games in the franchise. Axel, Adam, and Blaze are all here, plus more than a dozen other unlockable characters. Two newcomers — Cherry Hunter, the guitar-wielding daughter of Adam, and the cybernetically modified Floyd Iraia — are welcome additions to the cast that fit in perfectly with the series’ other gritty and colorful personalities.

Developers Dotemu, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush Games largely take a hands-off approach to the gameplay. In other words, don’t fix what isn’t broken.

How Console Wars and Insert Coin Re-examine the Games Industry of the ’90s
Blake J. Harris
As gamers, we’re always looking for the next big thing, whether it’s a disruptive new way to play (e.g. virtual and augmented reality) or an innovation in what makes games tick (ray tracing). But sometimes we’re so busy pushing forward that we forget to look back. Fortunately, two upcoming documentaries will take us back to the days when arcades were still swallowing our quarters and Nintendo and Sega ruled our living rooms.

Insert Coin, by 25-year game industry veteran and indie filmmaker Josh Tsui, chronicles the history of Midway Games, the legendary studio behind such arcade classics as Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam, and many more. Console Wars, which tells the story of how Sega tried to bring down Nintendo with the Genesis, is the documentary version of the beloved non-fiction book of the same name by Blake J. Harris, who directed the film with documentarian Jonah Tulis.

Chuck Lorre
Chuck Lorre donned an “Imag” hat — the logo standing for “Immigrants Make America Great” — during a press conference for his upcoming CBS sitcom “Bob Hearts Abishola” Thursday. Evan Goldberg Talks "Preacher" Series
Appearing at the SXSW film festival in Austin this weekend, writer/filmmaker Evan Goldberg spoke about his involvement in the proposed AMC TV series adaptation of the famed comic series "Preacher".

He tells Collider that the plan is to deliver as loyal an adaptation as possible:

"We just had a meeting with AMC and Garth Ennis, who's the writer, and we all kind of seemed to agree that we're gonna stay as true to the comic as we can.

We need to change some stuff but we're not gonna change much, I hope. We're just gonna do a little more of the preamble instead of doing flashbacks and restructure how we dole out the information a little, but we're gonna [do the] same characters, same story, same ending.

We're making it with Sam Catlin who did Breaking Bad, and so he might tell me I'm wrong about all of this and that...

Evan Goldberg Talks Preacher, The Interview, and Console Wars; Explains Why Preacher Works Better as a TV Series
Though it was clear from his days on Freaks and Geeks that Seth Rogen was a comedy talent to watch, few could have predicted that he would go on to become one of the most successful comedy writers—and burgeoning directors—working today. Rogen and his longtime friend Evan Goldberg made their feature screenwriting debut with the 2007 future comedy classic Superbad and followed that up with Pineapple Express in 2008 and The Green Hornet in 2011. The two made the move to directing to enormous success with last year’s excellent This Is the End, and now they have a number of exciting projects in the works as writers, directors, and producers. While attending SXSW in support of the Seth Rogen/Zac Efron comedy Neighbors, which he produced, Goldberg took some time to speak with us about a few of his upcoming projects. He talked about the editing process of his and...
