At first glance, you wouldn't think that a movie about a bunch of improv actors becoming police informants would strike a chord with so many people, but that's just what Prime Video's latest, Deep Cover, has done. Premiering yesterday, June 12, the British action comedy directed by Tom Kingsley has landed a stellar 92% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and fans are equally impressed with the new film, as they've rated it 82% on the Popcornmeter.
"Deep Cover is exactly the type of twist-filled action comedy with gags, guns, and gangsters that will delight fans who enjoy movies that have the madcap spirit of Guy Ritchie's early films," said Carla Hay from Culture Mix in her review. Guy Ritchie's early films, you say? Sign us up! Glenn Kenny from the New York Times is another critic who had high praise for the movie, adding:

Kate Mara is glad she and sister Rooney Mara waited until now to collaborate. The siblings play twins in Werner Herzog’s ‘Bucking Fastard’ and Kate, 42, who is two years older than sister Rooney in real life, revealed they waited so long because they wanted to settle on a director they were both happy with. She told The Hollywood Reporter: “We’ve been looking for something to do together for a while, and we have been sent things that were interesting. Playing sisters or not wasn’t actually important to us. We wrapped [‘Bucking Fastard’] a couple weeks ago, and it now makes so much sense that this was the one that was waiting for us. We read Werner’s email that asked us to be in it, and we’re both such massive fans of his. So the first hurdle was finding a filmmaker that we both like,...

Kate Mara was unacquainted with Tim Robinson’s brand of comedy when filmmaker Andrew DeYoung offered her the chance to star opposite the maestro of cringe in Friendship. Mara plays Tami Waterman, a loving mother, self-employed florist and cancer survivor who’s dangerously close to becoming Craig Waterman’s (Robinson) walkaway wife. Tami hasn’t been given the attentiveness she deserves from her tone-deaf husband, and the issue is magnified when Craig forms a fast friendship with their new local weatherman neighbor, Austin Carmichael (Paul Rudd).
Craig ultimately jeopardizes his new relationship, first by going too far during a casual boxing match, and then eating a bar of soap as a form of self-punishment in front of Austin and his other friends. This is the kind of unconventional humor that DeYoung’s feature directorial debut possesses in spades, but Mara still treated the unusual black comedy as seriously as she...

Kate Mara didn’t know exactly what she was getting into with Tim Robinson before joining the cast of “Friendship.” She wasn’t familiar with “I Think You Should Leave,” the absurdist Netflix sketch comedy created by Robinson and Zach Kanin – and “Friendship” very much plays like a 97-minute version of the series.
Thankfully, the screenplay by writer-director Andrew DeYoung painted a clear picture for Mara. “It was all on the page,” the “House of Cards” alum tells Variety. “It was such a great script, so funny. My reaction was, ‘Wow. Why did he think of me?’”
It’s a fair question. Mara, known largely for her work in drama series like “House of Cards” and “A Teacher,” hasn’t gotten to flex her comedy chops as much. In “Friendship,” she plays Tami, the wife to Robinson’s lonely marketing executive, Craig. Tami isn’t outwardly funny at first, serving largely as a straight-man,...

Werner Herzog is a mastermind with a camera. For decades, he has created some of the most respected films in the industry, moving past the vanity of Academy nominations and focusing on creating art. While his films do not get the most attention in the mainstream, he stands as one of the most respected and talented filmmakers in Hollywood.
With this, one can imagine that starring in any one of his films would be an honor for any actor. However, doing the same with one’s sister is indeed rare. Kate and Rooney Mara are experiencing this unique opportunity as they star in Herzog’s upcoming film, Bucking Fastard.
While the film is highly anticipated on its own, the fact that it is based on true events makes it all the more interesting.

Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard casts real-life siblings Kate and Rooney Mara as Jean and Joan Holbrooke, twins so intertwined they tunnel through an Irish mountain range seeking the legendary Orkneys. HanWay Films released a first-look image showing the Maras in matching outfits, speaking in unison to underscore their bond.
Orlando Bloom plays Gareth Mulroney, the sisters’ unruly former lover, while Domhnall Gleeson appears as Timothy, a government-assigned social worker charged with helping the twins adjust to modern city life after their tabloid rise. Herzog wrote and directed the feature, contrasting contemporary urban scenes with Ireland’s rugged landscapes to capture the Holbrookes’ shared speech patterns and mirrored ambitions.
Producers Clara Wu Tsai, Ariel Leon Isacovitch and Agnes Chu lead a team that includes Kieran Corrigan, Emanuele Moretti and Andrea Bucko. HanWay Films will present footage from shoots in Dublin, Sligo and Slovenia at the Cannes market.

Domhnall Gleeson and Orlando Bloom co-star in the feature, which is a sales title from HanWay Films.
“Bucking Fastard” is set in Ireland, where the sisters are assigned a government-issued social worker (Gleeson) in an attempt to help them adapt to modern life. The Venice Film Festival will honor iconoclastic German director Werner Herzog — whose body of work comprises “Aguirre, the Wrath of God,” “Fitzcarraldo” and Nosferatu the Vampyre” — with its 2025 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
“I feel deeply honored to receive a Lifetime Achievement Honorary Golden Lion by the Venice Biennale,” Herzog said in a statement. “I have always tried to be a Good Soldier of Cinema, and this feels like a medal for my work: Thank you.”
“However,” Herzog went on to note, “I have not gone into retirement.”
“I work as always. A few weeks ago, I just finished a documentary in Africa, ‘Ghost Elephants,’ and at this moment, I am shooting my next feature film, ‘Bucking Fastard,’ in Ireland. I am developing an animated film, based on my novel, ‘The Twilight World,’ and I am acting the voice of a creature in Bong Joon Ho’s upcoming animated film.
