Director Robert Eggers redeemed himself last year with his biggest hit ever, Nosferatu. Headlined by Lily-Rose Depp, the movie also featured Bill Skarsgård as the titular character, and made $180 million worldwide. Eggers was coming off of his biggest box office flop, the action epic The Northman, which was headlined by his Nosferatu star’s brother, Alexander Skarsgård. Even though the movie didn’t recover its budget during its theatrical run, it has established itself as a particularly successful title on home video. The Northmanrecently witnessed another spike in interest on Netflix, where it debuted recently.

Four-time Oscar-nominated actor Willem Dafoe, one of this year’s recipients of an honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award for career achievement, took time between his sold-out masterclass and presenting Miguel Ángel Jimenez’s “The Birthday Party” to visit the Variety Lounge, presented by the Sarajevo Film Festival and Bh Telecom.
The visit marked Dafoe’s return to the Bosnian capital 25 years after presenting Steve Buscemi’s “Animal Factory.” “The festival is really thriving and growing,” he observed. “I just had a talk, and it was a very enthusiastic reception. People are believers in cinema, so I’m always happy to go where those people are.”
The actor is, of course, very used to being on the festival trail. After Sarajevo, Dafoe will head to Venice to premiere Kent Jones’ “Late Fame” and Gastón Solnicki’s “The Souffleur,” then Toronto for Nadia Latif’s “The Man in My Basement.”

Willem Dafoe, who is at the Sarajevo Film Festival to receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award as well as support Miguel Ángel Jiménez’s “The Birthday Party,” gave an in-depth career masterclass where he spoke about some of his most iconic roles. He also, very briefly, touched upon current American politics.
Speaking about his Oscar-nominated role in Sean Baker’s 2017 drama “The Florida Project,” Dafoe was reminded of giving an interview to Larry King upon the film’s release as the U.S. entered the first Trump administration. On the occasion, the actor said America was “not going in the right direction.” When the moderator opened a space for the actor to reflect on whether or not he thinks the country is still misdirected, Dafoe kept quiet, before asking: “You gotta be kidding me with this question, right?”

The moment Ralph Ineson’s towering stature enters into frame and his God-like voice is heard, the moviegoing audience knows they’re in particularly good hands.
Thus, The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman understood full well the type of gravitas he’d be receiving when he offered Ineson the role of Galactus, the planet-devouring demigod and recurring foe of Marvel’s first family. In the first hour of what is now the definitive live-action adaptation of The Fantastic Four, Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) return home from an unsuccessful parley with the cosmic entity, and they are visibly shaken by the threat they just encountered, something Ineson’s performance conveyed with ease.

Director Sean Ellis has had an unusual career; if it seems like his fellow Brits, David Mackenzie and Kevin Macdonald have been genre-agnostic, Ellis has taken things a step farther. He remains best known for the deeply affecting drama Metro Manila, which is essentially a foreign-language film. But a few years ago, he tried his hand at horror. He directed the werewolf movie The Cursed, starring Kelly Reilly and Boyd Holbrook, and while the film didn't make much of a dent at the box office, it's climbing up the streaming ranks following its Netflix debut.
According to FlixPatrol, The Cursed was the sixth-most-popular film on Netflix in the United States on July 20, beating the likes of Brick, Penguins of Madagascar, Despicable Me 4, and The Old Guard 2. That's quite a diverse slate of titles for any film to outperform, let alone one that barely got a theatrical release despite being designed for one.

Además, a su lado podría estar Lily-Rose Depp (The Idol), que se encuentra en conversaciones para sumarse al proyecto. Robert Eggers is bringing in one of his frequent favorites for his highly anticipated Werwulf. Following the release of Nosferatu, which saw the filmmaker give the vampire genre a critically acclaimed and box office hit, Focus Features is hoping the director can do the same for the werewolf genre. Werwulf is increasingly becoming a Nosferatu reunion film as both Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily Rose Depp are set to star in the movie, and now Eggers has brought on his most recurring actor.
Deadline reports that Willem Dafoe has joined the cast of Werwulf in an undisclosed role. This marks Dafoe and Eggers' fourth collaboration after 2019's The Lighthouse, 2022's The Northman, and 2024's Nosferatu. Eggers is also set to direct Dafoe in a new feature film adaptation of A Christmas Carol, where Dafoe will play Ebenezer Scrooge. Robert Eggers is teaming up again with Willem Dafoe for his next movie, Werwulf, which is set to release on Christmas Day 2026 in North America, according to several sources. Dafoe is in talks to join the cast alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp. Eggers will direct and co-wrote the script with his longtime collaborator Sjón, who also worked on The Northman.
The film is being produced and financed by Focus Features, with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from Working Title and Chris and Eleanor Columbus from Maiden Voyage also on board as producers. Willem Dafoe may be teaming with Robert Eggers again. Dafoe, who has starred in three previous films from the director, is in talks to join the cast of Werwulf, Eggers' latest chilling tale of period horror. The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu writer/director Robert Eggers has dealt with some dark subject matter over the course of his career – but the darkest story is yet to come. No, not in his Labyrinth sequel or his adaptation of A Christmas Carol, but in the project he’s going to make before those two: the creature feature Werwulf, which he’s making for Focus Features, aiming for a Christmas Day 2026 theatrical release. We heard yesterday that this movie is going to be a Nosferatu reunion, as that film’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp have signed on to star in it. Now, the Nosferatu reunion is getting bigger, as Deadline reports that Willem Dafoe is also in talks to join the cast.

Robert Eggers is a visionary director whose cinematic tapestry weaves together horror, folklore, and ancient myth with meticulous historical precision. His debut was the A24 horror film The Witch (2015), which emerged from the shadows like a dark enchantment, haunting and austere, rich in atmosphere and dread. A triumph both creatively and commercially, the film announced Eggers as a bold new voice in horror storytelling.
Following this triumph, Eggers returned to A24 for The Lighthouse (2019), a tempestuous tale of isolation and madness drenched in sea mist and old-world despair. A period piece bathed in eerie black-and-white beauty, it captivated critics and audiences alike, further cementing Eggers' command of mood and myth. With poetic dialogue and surreal performances, the film shimmered with mythological weight and psychological complexity.
After two A24 films, Eggers graduated on to Focus Features and set his sights on Norse legend withThe Northman (2022), an Amleth-inspired Viking epic. Though it underperformed at the box office,...

Robert Eggers may be staging a little Nosferatu reunion with Werwulf as Aaron Taylor-Johnson is set to star in the upcoming horror flick. Not only that, but Lily-Rose Depp is also in talks to join the project. Both actors starred in Nosferatu.
The film is already slated for a December 25, 2026 release, and Eggers plans on shooting it later this year. He co-wrote the script with Sjón, his co-writer on The Northman. Details are being kept under wraps, but it’s been said that the story is set in 13th-century England. A decade ago, Robert Eggers suddenly broke into Hollywood, seemingly coming out of nowhere, and made his mark with the darkly twisted, unsettling, and fanatical debut feature, The Witch. The film not only brought Anya Taylor-Joy into the industry but also elevated Eggers to a maestro of horror.
His unmatched skill with the genre has since then been unquestionable. Equipped with exactly the kind of scripts that make A24 go over the moon, Eggers steadily rose in Hollywood by breaking norms, challenging propriety, questioning the status quo, and examining socio-political and religious truths without offending either the orthodoxical society, politics, or religion.

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu proved to be a huge success for Focus Features, and we found out earlier this year that the acclaimed filmmaker is staying with the studio - and firmly in the horror genre - for his next project, Werwulf, which he also co-wrote with fellow The Northman scribe, Sjón.

He's faced Alphas (28 Years Later), Rhinos (Kraven The Hunter), vampires (Nosferatu), and years of media lines asking whether or not he'll ever play James Bond, but for his next move, it looks like Aaron Taylor-Johnson is preparing to dance with the devil in the pale (full-)moonlight. Per Variety's reporting, the English actor is set to reunite with Nosferatu director Robert Eggers on the filmmaker's upcoming 13th century-set horror joint Werwulf. And, what's more, fellow Eggers alumni Lily-Rose Depp is in talks to join him.
Set to immerse cinemagoers in a meticulously detailed period setting once again, Werwulf — co-written by Eggers alongside Icelandic poet and The Northman scribe Sjón — is currently slated for release on Christmas Day 2026 stateside, meaning we'll likely see the movie hit British shores sometime in early 2027. In terms of what to expect from the movie however, beyond Eggers' now-customary era-accurate language and, presumably, a werewolf of some description,...

Robert Eggers will be reuniting with two of the stars of his hit gothic horror remake Nosferatu for his upcoming creature feature Werwulf. Slated to open on Christmas Day in 2026, Werwulf will feature a script co-written by Eggers and Sjón. While no plot details have been revealed, the movie will reportedly be set in 13th-century England and shot entirely using Old English dialogue, with annotations and translations throughout to ensure understanding.
The new film will no doubt fall in line with Eggers' typical style, which is marked by intricate attention to detail and period realism, along with a healthy dose of spine-chilling dread. There was a sneaky tease for Werwulf buried in Nosferatu's extended cut, but Eggers' latest will be another stand-alone movie like the rest of his directorial filmography.

Director Robert Eggersdelivered the biggest hit of his career only a few months ago, making good on a decade-long promise to become one of the foremost genre filmmakers of his generation. Despite the critical acclaim that he'd been showered with, not to mention the devoted cult following he'd earned for himself, Eggers hadn't made a bona fide blockbuster before Nosferatu last year. His previous attempt, the revenge saga The Northman, had flopped at the box office. However, the movie was a major hit on the PVOD market. It's now witnessing a resurgence on HBO Max, coinciding with the finale of star Alexander Skarsgård's Apple TV+ series Murderbot.

The Empire morning news sweep was dead: to begin with. There was no doubt whatever about that. And then we saw reports coming in from Deadline that Robert Eggers — architect of The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu — has signed on to write and direct a fresh take on A Christmas Carol at Warner Bros. And not only that, but the modern day master of horror is penning his retelling of Charles Dickens' timeless festive ghost story with a very familiar face in mind to play tight-fisted hand at the grindstone Ebenezer Scrooge: Willem Dafoe.

Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is the next classic tale that's set to get a reimagining in Hollywood. After providing a successful new take on Nosferatu, filmmaker Robert Eggers has now been tapped as the next director to bring to life a new live-action movie based on the beloved holiday story.
Per Deadline, Warner Bros. is reportedly moving forward with Eggers on a new adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Eggers will write the screenplay in addition to directing the film. Notably, no cast members have been officially attached to the project at this time. However, word is that Eggers is writing the script with the frequent collaborator Willem Dafoe in mind for the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. Eggers will also produce alongside Maiden Voyage's Chris Columbus and Elenor Columbus.
While there's no guarantee Dafoe will accept the role, it's fair to say he'd consider it, given how he appears to enjoy collaborating with Eggers.

Warner Bros. Pictures is hoping to be blessed with a new feature based on A Christmas Carol.
Robert Eggers is set to write and direct a movie adapting author Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story set at Christmas. Eggers will produce the project alongside Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus for Maiden Voyage.
The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported last year that Eggers’ next project as director is the werewolf horror movie Werwulf. Eggers co-wrote the script for the film that Focus Features has set for theatrical release on Christmas Day of 2026.

Previous screen adaptations include a 2019 British television version starring Guy Pearce, Andy Serkis, Stephen Graham, Charlotte Riley and Joe Alwyn. Robert Zemeckis helmed a 2009 animated feature version starring Jim Carrey as Scrooge.

After adapting Viking mythology and a classic vampire tale, Robert Eggers has set his sights on Charles Dickens. IndieWire has confirmed that the “Nosferatu” filmmaker is set to write and direct a new film based on Dickens’ holiday classic “A Christmas Carol” for Warner Bros., with his muse Willem Dafoe eyed to star.
“A Christmas Carol” famously tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter, greedy businessman who is forced to confront his selfish ways after being visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. The novel was first published in 1843, and it has been adapted countless times for the stage and screen. Notable adaptations include 1992’s “The Muppets Christmas Carol” and Robert Zemeckis’ 2009 motion capture film “A Christmas Carol.” Beyond the direct adaptations, the book’s structure, in which a character is visited by ghosts of Past, Present, and Future, has been used and parodied in so many different properties...

There’s a ghost of Christmas future for Robert Eggers and Willem Dafoe. The pair are eyeing a reunion on a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at Warner Bros.
While no talent is currently attached to the project in this nascent stage, individuals familiar with development noted Eggers’ longtime working relationship and fondness for Dafoe. Sources would not be surprised if the “Nosferatu” star made it into the package in the near future. The pair first worked together on A24’s seaside black comedy “The Lighthouse” and Dafoe returned for supporting roles in Eggers’ two subsequent period pieces at Universal’s specialty banner Focus Features, “The Northman” and “Nosferatu.”
As “A Christmas Carol” remains in development, Eggers is still booked to direct “Werwulf” beforehand for Focus. “Christmas Carol” would be Eggers’ first feature at Warner Bros.

Universal Pictures has set the sequel to the 87North holiday action film “Violent Night” for release on Dec. 4, 2026.
Released in December 2022, “Violent Night” starred David Harbour as a surly version of Santa Claus who, while making his annual rounds to deliver gifts, stumbles upon a house with a family held hostage by mercenaries and takes matters into his own hands to rescue them. The film grossed $76 million at the global box office against a $20 million budget.
Tommy Wirkola directed the film from a screenplay by “Sonic the Hedgehog” series writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. Harbour will return for the sequel with 87North founders Kelly McCormick and David Leitch producing, though details on the director, writer and plot remain under wraps.
Like its predecessor, “Violent Night 2” will take up an early December/post-Thanksgiving release slot that historically is a slow period for new releases outside of specialty titles. Studios...

Japanese pioneer video game developer Hideo Kojima reacts to Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake after seeing the movie in theaters. Released in the United States on December 25, Robert Eggers' latest horror movie didn't arrive in Japanese theaters until May 15. Kojima has now taken to X to reflect on his viewing experience at a sold-out screening of Nosferatu. The video game developer and director was blown away by the world-building and visuals, praising Eggers' "spellbinding" work and how the Gothic horror had elevated Dracula into art.
