Thank you for the party, but Sly could never stay. Sly Stone was always the ultimate mystery man of American music, a visionary genius who transformed the world with some of the most innovative sounds of the Sixties and Seventies. With Sly and the Family Stone, he fused funk, soul, and acid rock into his own utopian sound, in hits like “Family Affair” and “Everyday People.” Yet he remained an elusive figure, all but disappearing in the 1970s. When he died on Monday, it seemed strange he was “only” 82, because...

Earlier this year, former Band of Skulls bassist Emma Richardson was painting in her London studio when the phone rang. It was producer Tom Dalgety with a rather urgent matter to discuss. He was working on a new record with the Pixes, and they had an all-too-familiar problem to solve: They’d just parted ways with yet another bass player, their third, and had to fill the spot, quickly. Was she interested?
“The call came totally out of the blue and was an incredible surprise,” Richardson tells Rolling Stone. “I had stopped making music,...

It may not have Doris Day singing "Que Sera, Sera" like its 1956 remake, but Alfred Hitchcock's original 1934 film "The Man Who Knew Too Much" represents some of the master's best work before he came to Hollywood. It's got the Hitchcock magic, that strange movie logic that doesn't need to make complete sense to be wildly entertaining. Like so many of the movies he made later, it embraces some classic beats: a man on the run, complex international intrigue, and as much suspense as he could wring out of every moment.
It also opens with a moment of surprising levity, following British couple Bob and Jill Lawrence (Leslie Banks and Edna Best) on their holiday in the Swiss Alps. When their French friend Louis (Pierre Fresnay) is mysteriously shot while dancing, he divulges a crucial secret to Jill -- where to find a note with dangerous information about the planned...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Westworld Season 4 Episode 8, “Que Sera, Sera.”] Well, it wouldn’t be an episode of Westworld if your brain wasn’t sweating by the time the final credits roll. “Que Sera, Sera” doesn’t answer every question posed by the previous seven episodes, but it does a good enough job to leave viewers satisfied — and hungry for more, should HBO renew the show for a fifth season. (Fingers crossed.) There are gunfights, tears, and deaths aplenty, and a beloved character from earlier seasons makes a welcome reappearance. Here’s how it happens. HBO Caleb, Frankie, and Stubbs After Frankie’s (Aurora Perrineau) shot, Team Caleb takes a pause in an alleyway. As Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) scouts out the area, he notices Caleb (Aaron Paul) twitching and reminds him that the Delos experiments never worked out, so there’s a good chance he’s not going to, either. (Caleb would have no...

Westworld Season 4 Episode 8
William (Ed Harris) was always obsessed with the creations of Robert Ford. He wasn’t exactly into the narrative, but he was in search of something else. Something deeper, something more meaningful, called to him. William knew it as the maze, and all he wanted was to find his way to the center of it any way he could. Usually, especially as he aged into the Man In Black, that meant violence. He understands violence, and he’s at home when there’s shooting, screaming, and bleeding. The guy in a black Stetson stalking through the streets of Manhattan gunning down everyone in his math might not be the same as the human, flesh-and-blood William, but as he says later in the episode, he’s just William’s impulses in an evolved body. Meat does not make a person, unless it’s...

Westworld Season 4 — and possibly the series? — concluded on Sunday night with “Que Sera, Sera,” a finale that pit Hale, Christina, Caleb et al against a world on fire. (The EPs tell our sister site Deadline there is no word on renewal yet.)
The finale opens with a street littered with corpses. Civilians kill each other without mercy or ceremony, turning once-quiet city blocks into veritable war zones. Fleeting guest castings come and go. (Hey, Steven Ogg!) A young sharpshooter takes out a handful of these murderous pedestrians, before William kills him. The Man in Black has very much plunged the...
