Liman shared the news with Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman at a recent NYC screening of the documentary Gaucho Gaucho, expressing his interest in crafting a “scary” movie at this stage of his career. “I have never done one,” said the director, “and neither has Tom.”

While reports have suggested that Deeper may be Liman’s next project, whether that’s actually the case is not yet clear. Sources have confirmed to Deadline that the film is currently set up at Warner Bros.

Deeper follows an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench. In development for almost a decade, the project was originally set up at MGM in April 2016, following the studio’s acquisition of a hot spec from Max Landis.

About nine years ago, a supernatural thriller script called Deeper, written by Max Landis, was the subject of a bidding war that MGM ended up winning. They forked over a seven figure amount. At the time, the project had Bradley Cooper on board to play the lead character and Kornel Mundruczo (White God) was set to direct it. Edge of Tomorrow (2014) director Doug Liman will be collaborating with Tom Cruise once again on the new supernatural thriller called Deeper. Per Showbiz 411, Liman confirmed the plans at a screening of the Gregory Kershaw, Michael Dweck documentary Gaucho Gaucho.

Liman said he and the Mission: Impossible star, with whom he also worked together on 2017’s American Made, are planning to work on the movie soon. “I have never done one, and neither has Tom Cruise,” Liman said of working on the "scary" movie.

Recent reports suggest that the cast for Iñárritu’s next cinematic escapade reads like a who’s who of Hollywood talent, including Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

The screenplay, a brainchild of Iñárritu along with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris, and Nicolas Giacobone, tells the tale of a man with untold power who’s caused a colossal mess but must convince humanity that he’s their knight in shining armor.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Tom Cruise will be starring in the new film from director Alejandro Iñárritu for Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, with this being Iñárritu’s first English language movie since The Revenant, which hit theatres back in 2015. Now Deadline has revealed the names of six of Cruise’s co-stars, breaking the news that he has been joined in the cast by John Goodman (The Big Lebowski), Jesse Plemons (Civil War), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), and Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me by Your Name), with Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) in final negotiations to join in as well.
