Why We Should Thank Tom Holland for Jon Bernthal’s Casting as Punisher in MCU
Image
Tom Holland has been charming fans as Spider-Man in the MCU for almost a decade now. His kind, helpful, if a little goofy version of the web-slinger has won over even the most jaded fans over the years.

Although his Spider-Man: No Way Home gave a glimpse of the happy-go-lucky superhero finally turning a little darker after the tragedies that took place, Holland nonetheless managed to keep the essence of his unique version of Spider-Man alive, even during those sequences.

Interestingly, though, it turns out that his helpful streak reaches beyond the camera with long-lasting consequences. It was that very trait of Tom Holland that might have helped Jon Bernthal land the role of Punisher in the MCU.

Jon Bernthal Helped Tom Holland Prepare His MCU Audition Tape to Be Spider-Man
Image
Many people may not be aware that before becoming the MCU’s Punisher and Spider-Man, respectively, Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland starred together in a mostly forgotten 2017 movie called Pilgrimage. What makes the film a significant moment for both of them is that it was while working on that movie that they both auditioned for their very different Marvel roles, and Bernthal recently revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live that he actually helped Holland with his audition tape.

The pair are currently reuniting on screen thanks to their roles in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey, but as Bernthal recalled, their last collaboration included giving each other a little boost in their Marvel auditions. He said:

“We did a film about seven or eight years ago. That was where both Tom did his audition for Spider-Man and I did my audition for Punisher. We actually made each other’s audition tapes on that film.

Image
Tom Holland has Jon Bernthal to thank for helping him land the role of Spider-Man.

During a recent interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Bernthal said while working with Holland on Brendan Muldowney’s “Pilgrimage,” the pair collaborated on each other’s MCU audition tapes. While Holland helped Bernthal with his tryout for the leading role in the 2017 series “The Punisher,” Bernthal assisted Holland in landing the role of Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War.”

“We did [‘Pilgrimage’] about seven or eight years ago,” Bernthal said. “That was where both Tom did his audition for ‘Spider-Man’ and I did my audition for ‘Punisher.’ We actually made each other’s audition tapes on that film.”

Bernthal explained that Holland “really believed” that he would land that part despite heavy competition, often repeating “‘I am Spider-Man'” while working on his audition.

Jon Bernthal Recalls Helping Tom Holland with Spider-Man Audition Tape
Jon Bernthal.
Jon Bernthal recently revisited a moment from early in his Marvel journey, recalling how he and Tom Holland assisted each other with audition tapes while filming the 2017 historical drama Pilgrimage. Bernthal auditioned for Frank Castle while Holland was preparing his take on Peter Parker.

“We did a film about seven or eight years ago,” Bernthal said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “That was where both Tom did his audition for Spider-Man and I did my audition for Punisher. We actually made each other’s audition tapes on that film.”

Bernthal said Holland, then a teenager, approached the process with confidence. “He had such focus and such belief, it was so beautiful,” he said. “He would say, ‘I’m Spider-Man,’ I mean, he really believed he was going to get it.”

He remembered trying to manage Holland’s expectations while still encouraging him. “I was like, ‘There’s probably...

Tom Holland's New Christopher Nolan Movie Role Is More Exciting Than His Spider-Man Return
Image
Tom Holland is set to return as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the coming years, but his new role in Christopher Nolan's next movie is even more exciting. Since breaking out with the life-changing superhero casting and his debut as Peter Parker in 2016, Holland's career has primarily been defined by playing the web-slinger. This is set to continue with him returning for Spider-Man 4 with Marvel Studios and Sony. While that film and his expected appearances in the two upcoming Avengers movies are highly anticipated, news that Holland will star in Christopher Nolan's new film is massive.

Nolan's Oppenheimer follow-up is shrouded in mystery, per usual for the director, so there is not much information about what role Holland will play. Still, with a 2026 release date and Matt Damon's involvement, the announcement of Holland's casting is incredibly exciting. It officially pairs the British star with...

The English actor is best known for his portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in six Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, starting with 2016's Captain America: Civil War and most recently, 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. In between MCU movies, Holland has often ventured outside the blockbuster film franchise, including for the new Apple TV+ limited series, The Crowded Room, in which he plays a psychologically distraught man accused of murder in 1979.

The Crowded Room, which premiered on June 9, has not fared well at all with critics, currently sitting at 30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Martian Manhunter's Origin is So Much More Brutal Than Fans Realize
Image
The Martian Manhunter is a tragic figure and his origin is far more brutal than fans realize. In 1998’s Martian Manhunter #0, J’onn relives his last days on Mars, as the planet died a violent death. A plague of madness had overtaken the planet, and in a bid to protect himself, the Martian Manhunter cut himself off telepathically from the rest of his species; furthermore, he watched his family be consumed by the plague.

J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter, first appeared in 1955’s Detective Comics #225, shortly before the dawn of comics’ Silver Age. Although the exact specifics of the Martian Manhunter's origin have changed over the last 68 years, the general gist remains the same: he is the last survivor of the planet Mars. He was brought to Earth in a teleporter accident and was thus spared the fate of his home world. The Martian Manhunter suffered an unspeakable tragedy,...

Supergirl is The True Equal To Martian Manhunter, Not Superman
Image
Supergirl is the true equal to the Martian Manhunter, not Superman. More often than not, discussions over who is equal to the Martian Manhunter usually center around the Man of Steel. In terms of power this comparison makes sense, but there is one Kryptonian who truly is on the Martian Manhunter’s level, and it is Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El. In 1998’s Martian Manhunter #0, J’onn witnesses the death of his home world - much like Supergirl - giving the two a strong connection.

In the story, titled “Pilgrimage” and written by John Ostrander and illustrated by Tom Mandrake, it's revealed that it is actually Supergirl that the Martian Manhunter shares the most in common with. The planet Mars is dying. Ma’alefa’ak, an evil Martian who lacks telepathy, has unleashed a virus - Hronmeer’s Curse - spread by telepathy. The Martian Manhunter wanders the planet, forced...

The Cellar Was Originally Envisioned As A 'Full-Blown Monster Mash-Up' With No Adults [Spoiler Interview]
Elisha Cuthbert in The Cellar (2022)
Warning: This article contains spoilers for "The Cellar." Proceed with caution.

"The Cellar" is a slow-burn horror movie. It's more about what's coming than what's happening. When the third act arrives in Brendan Muldowney's ("Pilgrimage") horror film, the story takes a sharp turn into the supernatural and features a rather impressive practical creature. Initially, however, things were meant to get a whole lot weirder for the film's central family that moves into the wrong house.

There were more creatures, for starters. Funny enough, the one creature that does arrive to shake things up? Crew members considered it a letdown on the set. During a...

We’re thrilled at the SVOD premiere of Hamaguchi’s entrancing Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, our #3 of 2021, and Bruno Dumont’s lacerating France, featuring Léa Seydoux’s finest performance yet.

Ethan Hawke’s Adventures in Moviegoing runs the gamut from Eagle Pennell’s Last Night at the Alamo to 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, while a 14-film John Ford retro (mostly) skips westerns altogether. And no notes on the Delphine Seyrig retro—multiple by Akerman, Ulrike Ottinger, Duras, a smattering of Buñuel, and Seyrig’s own film Be Pretty and Shut Up! That of all things might be the crown jewl.

See the full list of April titles below and more on the Criterion Channel.

Image
The Irish-Belgian co-production, set to begin shooting in Roscommon this month, will star Eoin Macken and Elisha Cuthbert in the main cast. Brendan Muldowney is ready to start shooting his new film, an Irish-Belgian horror entitled The Cellar. The film, penned by the helmer himself, tells the story of Keira Woods (Elisha Cuthbert), whose daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house in the country. Keira soon discovers there is an ancient and powerful entity controlling their home that she will have to face or risk losing her family’s souls forever. Alongside Cuthbert, Eoin Macken is attached in an undisclosed role. On this occasion, Muldowney will reunite with part of his Pilgrimage crew...

Kelly Reichardt
What’s New on DVD in September: ‘First Cow,’ ‘Blumhouse of Horrors,’ ‘Roman Holiday’ and More
Kelly Reichardt
New Indie

One of the best films of 2020 — and the last one I’ll get to see in a theater for who knows how long — Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” (Lionsgate) sees the director once again turning to the American frontier to tell a story about America now. John Magaro and Orion Lee play two men in pioneer-era Oregon who go into business selling fried-dough “oilycakes” to homesick miners, but find themselves in the crosshairs of the plutocrat who owns the territory’s only source of fresh milk. It’s gorgeous, elegaic, witty, and powerful — and you’ll crave some funnel cakes.

Also available: Director James Sweeney, who also wrote and starred, makes an impressive feature debut with “Straight Up” (Strand Releasing), about a gay man whose lack of relationship success drives him to give women one last shot; two siblings try to fulfill their grandmother’s dying wish in...

If you've been paying attention to the recent wave of Irish films you've most likely come across actor Hugh O'Conor at some point. He was the lead in hit comedy The Stag before playing a key support part opposite Tom Holland and Jon Bernthal in period adventure Pilgrimage, to name a pair of recent examples. But outside his acting work O'Conor is a very accomplished photographer and following some directing work in the music video and commercial world he's now applied those skills as he takes the helm with his directorial debut, Metal Heart. The studio eventually moved to Hollywood and for twenty years—before merging with Twentieth Century Pictures to form 20th Century Fox in 1935—was, as MoMA says, “home to the most dazzling lineup of directorial talent in the studio era. As silent film transitioned into sound, Fox’s roster of directors included Frank Borzage, Allan Dwan, John Ford, Howard Hawks, William K. Howard, Henry King, William Cameron Menzies, F. W. Murnau,...
