Chris Pratt’s $1.3 Billion Hit Finds Streaming Success as Fans Await Sequel News
Image
Chris Pratt will always be known for his role as Star Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, but a few years ago, he starred in a major blockbuster that has returned to streaming charts. Pratt stars alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the 2023 animated hit that sees Pratt voice the titular character, with Taylor-Joy voicing Princess Peach and Black as the villainous Bowser. The Super Mario Bros. 'The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie' Earns Glowing First Reviews
Image
Judging by entertainment news, the term "animated" might seem like an industry euphemism for "tax write-off." And despite Warner Bros. being the most destructive thing to happen to cartoons since the eraser, its new feature film, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, is getting love from critics. The first reviews are in for the Looney Tunes movie that managed to escape Warner Bros.' clutches and land a theatrical release (more on that in a moment), and the response from critics so far is overwhelmingly positive.

Directed by Peter Browngardt, The Day the Earth Blew Up sends Daffy Duck and Porky Pig on an adventure to save the planet from an alien invasion.

In his review for Variety, critic Peter Debruge writes:

Day is funnier than any film the studio has put out since The Lego Movie 2 and a rare chance to see Porky and...

I'm Sorry, But Lego Live-Action Movies Sound Like A Terrible Idea
Image
The Lego franchise will begin making live-action movies, and I think that idea is an awful mistake. Lego is mostly known for its plastic brick toys and miniature figures, but the company began making high-budget animated movies and shows with 2014's aptly-named The Lego Movie. Since the success of The Lego Movie, which earned $468 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), the franchise has made several more Lego movies, including a sequel, a pair of Lego Batman films, a movie about Ninjago, and more. Even though the Lego franchise has expanded its subject matter, one thing has stayed the same: its animation.

Now, however, there are three live-action Lego movies in the works. There are currently very few details about the films, and not even their titles are public knowledge yet. However, three directors have been attached to the movies: Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman...

A Fourth Live-Action Lego Movie In Development From Former Star Trek: Prodigy Showunners
Image
After a slew of big announcements, yet another Lego Movie is now in development. The Lego series has gotten some activity with the well-reviewed 2024 film Piece by Piece. Unlike the other Lego Movies, which are fictional stories, Piece by Piece is a whimsical biography of singer and musician Pharrell Williams. The main Lego series, which includes The Lego Movie and its 2019 follow up, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, was taken over by Universal in 2020. Since then, development on The Lego Movie 3 was seemingly confirmed yet massively stalled as the Lego-verse grappled with new leadership.

As per Deadline, the Lego universe has another exciting update with the development of another Lego Ninjago Movie. According to the source, a script for a new Lego Ninjago movie is being developed by brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman. Unlike the previous Lego Ninjago Movie, this film will be live-action. Producers on the project...

Lego developing three live-action movies from Patty Jenkins, Jake Kasdan, and Joe Cornish
Image
Lego has proven it can deliver when it comes to animated fare, but what about live-action? Deadline reports that The Lego Group is developing three live-action movies with Universal Pictures and has tapped some major directors to help. Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) will each direct a Lego movie.

As for the plot of these three movies, they’re under wraps, but I’ll admit that I’m intrigued by what Lego has planned for these live-action projects. Jenkins will direct her project, which she also co-wrote with former DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns and will produce through her Wicious Pictures banner. As for Kasdan, he will direct from a script by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul based on an original idea and a previous draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows. He will also produce with Melvin Mar...

New Lego Movies From Wonder Woman, Jumanji, and Attack the Block Directors
Image
Blockheads, it's time to celebrate. Deadline is reporting that Universal and the Lego Group have greenlit not one, not two, but three new Lego movies, with directors Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Cornish.

According to Deadline, "all three movies plots are under wraps," but their scripts are well underway and unique to each directors' vision. Kasdan will be directing his Lego feature off a script from Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, "based on an original idea and previous draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows." Jenkins' movie is "from a script she wrote with former DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns." Meanwhile, Cornish's toy bricks will come to us via a rewrite of a previous draft from Heather Anne Campbell, which was based on a treatment written by Simon Rich.

Three Live-Action Lego Movies Confirmed With Jumanji, Wonder Woman & Attack The Block Directors Attached
Image
An exciting slate of directors has signed on to helm three new Lego movies. The cinematic Lego-verse underwent an unwanted hiatus for several years after 2019's whimsical The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. 2024 did see another animated Lego movie, but in an unusual form: Piece by Piece, a biopic-style film about music extraordinaire Pharrell Williams. The Lego Movie and its sequel and companion films have been among the most well-liked animated films of this generation, leaving audiences wanting more Lego content.

Lego fans' fears can soon be assuaged as Deadline announces the production on three new Lego-based films. Yet untitled, these films are said to be shot in live-action. Directors for the projects include Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins, and Joe Cornish. Kasdan's script will be written by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul based on an idea by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows. One Of Morgan Freemans Most Hilarious Roles Totally Flipped His Wise Mentor Typecast
Image
Morgan Freeman has played a variety of roles throughout his career, but hes mostly known for his mentor roles and one of his most hilarious roles ended up flipping this typecast in the best way. Morgan Freeman is one of the most popular and respected actors of his generation and with good reason, as he has shown his incredible acting range in a variety of movies in a career that spans six decades. Freemans acting debut was in the 1964 drama The Pawnbroker, but his big break arrived in 1987 in the crime thriller Street Smart.

Since then, Freeman has been part of a variety of movies in both main and secondary roles, and among his most notable projects are Driving Miss Daisy, Glory, The Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, and Christopher Nolans The Dark Knight trilogy. Piece By Piece Is Good, But It's Time For A Proper New Lego Movie Now
Image
In one of the most interesting moves for a modern biopic film, Piece By Piece tells the life story of musician Pharrell Williams using the medium of Lego bricks but this doesn't mean it can replace the other Lego movies. Piece by Piece has been reviewed quite well, with the heartwarming story and animation style praised as particular highlights. It delves into the true story of Pharrell, illustrating his life through Lego animation. It's great to see filmmakers taking creative risks with documentaries like this, and it is equally great to see the return of Lego to the big screen.

Piece by Piece is the first Lego movie to be released since The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part came out in 2019, and it is the first to be released by Universal Pictures after they secured the rights back in 2020. With their rights to Lego expiring in 2025, it could also...

Every Lego Movie Ranked, Worst To Best (Including Piece By Piece)
Image
The Lego movie franchise expands with Piece by Piece, and that means it's time to rank the five animated Lego movies released in theaters from worst to best. Following the initial announcement that Warner Bros. Animation would make movies based on Lego, skepticism quickly mounted. The brick-building toys - despite covering many different time periods, realities, and characters - have not been known for their storytelling. That changed with Phil Lord and Chris Miller's The Lego Movie in 2014, which follows a son trying to change the strict rules placed upon the Lego land and characters by his father.

The success of The Lego Movie spawned sequels and spinoffs from Warner Bros. over the next several years. The four films from Warner Bros. Animation grossed over $1 billion worldwide at the box office, although not all were met with the same level of critical acclaim as the original. That left Universal Pictures...

Pharrell Williams Thanks Lego For Helping Tell His “Origin Story” In ‘Piece By Piece’

Pharrell Williams is thankful someone took a risk on his brand of unconventional storytelling.

At a recent screening of his new animated documentary Piece by Piece, the 13x Grammy winner expressed his gratitude to Lego‘s head of global entertainment Jill Wilfert for saying “yes” and collaborating on the film.

“I don’t want to make it all heavy, but she said yes to a Black man’s story, from a marginalized community. When I was young, that’s my origin story,” said Williams, according to The Independent.

Over the past decade, the 75-year-old toy company has expanded into animated features, with The Lego Movie (2014), The Lego Batman Movie (2017), The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017) and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019).

Williams added at the screening, “Lego could have said no. I’m Black, in case you hadn’t figured that out. But they said yes. I’m not Batman.

Lego Store Hacked As Part Of Major Financial Scam
Image
A financial scam has officially taken over the Lego store after a cryptocurrency company hacked the store's website. Lego is a multimedia company that creates movies, creative toys, and TV shows for audiences to enjoy. With The Lego Movie 3 on the way, even the company's on-screen potential remains high. Unfortunately, it is currently facing serious challenges outside of the box office.

According to a report by Engadget, hackers took over the store website and began promoting a cryptocurrency coin. The hackers left a gigantic golden banner, proclaiming that the "Lego coin" was officially available for sale. The coin is not legitimate and is not actually affiliated with Lego. The banner has since been taken down and the company released the following statement about the hack:

On 5 October 2024 (October 4 evening in the US), an unauthorised banner briefly appeared on Lego.com. It was quickly removed, and the issue has been resolved.

This Movie Franchise Made Over $1 Billion In 5 Years, So Why Is It Dead?
Image
The Lego Movie grossed $467 million and launched sequels and spinoffs, but the franchise hasn't released a new film in five years. The Lego Batman Movie capitalized on the popularity of Batman as a character, becoming a critical and box office success. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part was a box office bomb, causing Warner Bros. to relinquish the movie and TV rights to the Lego brand.

The Lego Movie franchise is a billion-dollar property with more than a few blockbuster movies under its belt, so why is it not a thriving cinematic universe? When a film adaptation of the Lego construction toys was first announced, it seemed to be a Hollywood cash grab like The Angry Birds Movie, using the power of cinema to advertise a product and generate some corporate synergy. But Phil Lord and Christopher Miller ended up delivering a surprisingly great movie. The Lego Movie is emotional,...

The series was produced by J.J. Abrams and The Batman‘s Matt Reeves. We also return to Middle Earth this month with the premiere of The Rings of Power season 2 on Aug. 29.

As far as movies go, the Amazon original Jackpot! arrives on Aug. 15 starring Awkwafina and John Cena. This comedy is set in a world where Lottery winners have to survive until sundown in order to claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot – anyone who kills them before that gets to claim their prize.

Shrek 5 Is The Biggest Threat To A $3 Billion+ Box Office Record That's Stood For 5 Years
Image
Big animated franchises are set to dominate 2026 with sequels like Shrek 5, Toy Story 5, and Frozen III. The year could break the box office record for animated movies, surpassing 2019's $3 billion+ haul. There's potential for 2026 to produce the highest-grossing animated movie ever, with Frozen III and Toy Story 5 leading the charge.

After plenty of rumors and speculation, Shrek 5 has finally received a release date, and it will come out alongside Toy Story 5 and Frozen III in 2026. Having first been released back in 2001, the Shrek franchise became a huge deal in the animation world, but its last mainline film came in 2010, meaning everyone's favorite ogre will have been away from the big screen for 16 years when he finally makes his return. Shrek 5's release date announcement, with the movie confirmed for July 1, 2026, is a huge relief. I'm super excited about the next installment, but it has...

This Chris Pratt Movie Is Climbing the Netflix Charts 10 Years After Release
Image
Although an entire decade has gone by since the smashing animated film The Lego Movie starring Chris Pratt was released theatrically, it has found more success on Netflix's global chart as it joins the Top 10 Movies for the week of June 3 through June 9, 2024. This may come as no surprise considering that the movie was such a hit when it dropped in 2014 that it led to the creation of a multimillion dollar franchise as well as the production of a sequel, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) and two spinoffs, The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie.

Chris Pratt's 2014 Animated Hit Movie Finds Renewed Success On Netflix's Global Chart
Image
The Lego Movie has found renewed success on Netflix's global chart, getting the Number 9 spot for the week of June 3 to June 9, 2024. The film's popularity showcases its enduring quality as an adventure movie, and why it's been praised for its likable characters and world. With interest still strong a decade later, the film's success on Netflix may influence the future of the franchise.

Chris Pratt's 2014 animated hit film, The Lego Movie, has found renewed success on Netflix's global chart a decade after release, proving the movie to be a popular film long after it was made. The film stars Pratt as Emmet, a normal Lego figure who is accidentally recruited to save the world after being mistaken for the chosen one, or Special. The film ended up being a critical and commercial success, spawning a sequel and two spinoffs, with a planned Lego Movie 3 anticipated at some point in the future.

‘The Day the Earth Blew Up’ Review: Daffy Duck and Porky Pig Save the World in Side-Splitting Looney Tunes Movie
Image
Look up “cartoon villain” in the dictionary, and you’re likely to find a picture of David Zaslav. Since taking over Warner Bros. Discovery, he’s cast aside not one, but two feature-length Looney Tunes projects. Last November, there was the live-action/animated hybrid “Coyote vs. Acme,” which was given the “Batgirl” treatment. Lower profile but no less deserving of a proper release, WB Animation’s hand-drawn Porky Pig and Daffy Duck stand-alone “The Day the Earth Blew Up” was made for Max, but went on the block last fall. It’s still looking for U.S. distribution.

Fortunately, that didn’t stop the Annecy Animation Festival from giving “The Day the Earth Blew Up” its world premiere — and, one hopes, a better shot at seeing the light of day. As it turns out, “Day” is funnier than any film the studio has put out since “The Lego Movie 2...

2024's New Lego Movie Is Nothing Like The Previous $1.1 Billion Franchise
Image
Piece by Piece is a unique Lego movie about Pharrell Williams and marks a departure from previous franchise films. The film maintains the Lego animation style while tackling more serious, real-life topics and aims at a mature audience. Despite its new spin, Piece by Piece still embodies the essence of the Lego franchise with fantasy elements and a message of individuality.

A new Lego movie will be released in 2024, but its nothing like the brands previous $1.1. billion franchise. The popularity of the Lego brand of toys has been consistent for decades, and its not surprising that it has expanded into a media franchise with movies, TV shows, specials, and more. LEGOs expansion to film began in the early 2000s with direct-to-video films based on the Bionicle line, with the brand later bringing to life toy lines like Lego Batman, Scooby-Doo, Super Hero Girls, and more, and in 2014, it finally made...

Announced back in January, the upcoming Lego Pharrell Williams biopic’s trailer was finally unveiled, and Lamar’s first look from the film has sent fans into a frenzy.

The Lego Movie Hitting Netflix Is A Painful Reminder Of The Franchise's 5-Year Slumber
Image
The Lego Movie's Netflix debut highlights a 5-year franchise hiatus, despite its initial $1 billion success and critical acclaim. Universal's acquisition from Warner Bros. in 2020 led to uncertainty for The Lego Movie 3, with details scarce on the sequel. The Lego Movie franchise has vast potential for storytelling, creative adaptation of characters, and must continue despite its recent slumber.

The Lego Movie has officially landed on Netflix, but its arrival is a painful reminder of the franchise's five-year slumber. When The Lego Movie hit theaters in 2024, it surprised audiences by exceeding expectations and launching a successful film franchise. Since the first movie debuted, the franchise has gone on to gross over $1 billion, proving it was a huge hit. Most films within The Lego Movie franchise also received strong reviews which showed how much potential the series had; however, despite the original movie making its way to Netflix, the series hasn't produced any content in years.

The Lego Movie success prompts Universal deal. 5-year plan for new films after pause in original installment. Over-saturation led to decline in box office receipts. The Lego Movie franchise has come to a surprising halt despite its staggering $1.1 billion success. Five years after the conclusion of the original series, Jill Wilfert, a key executive at Lego, offers a candid explanation for the decision to end the franchise and hints at a new iteration in the works.

Why $1.1B Lego Movie Franchise Ended Candidly Explained By Company Exec 5 Years Later
Image
Jill Wilfert reflects on the success of the original Lego Movie franchise despite declining box office numbers. Wilfert also opens up about why the franchise came to an end and the company sold the rights to Universal. The decision to sell the franchise rights to Universal led to several projects being scrapped, including The Billion Brick Race and Lego Superfriends, a sequel to the Batman spinoff.

While a new iteration lingers in development at a different studio, executive Jill Wilfert opens up about why the original Lego Movie franchise. The iconic toy brand made its way to the screen with the eponymous 2014 movie from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, which became an unprecedented success, grossing over $468 million and netting an extremely positive 96% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. After releasing three subsequent movies, Lego elected to sell the rights to the property to Universal in a five-year deal.

Lego Film Boss Jill Wilfert Reflects on 10 Years of ‘The Lego Movie,’ How ‘Barbie’ Changed the Toy-to-Film Landscape and What to Expect From Their Universal Deal
Image
Despite “Barbie’s” recent box office domination, the history of toy-to-film franchises has not always been easy. Often dismissed as a cash grab (“Battleship”) or popcorn fare, turning toys into critically and commercially successful content is no skate in the park.

For Mattel and co, there was another toy that had to walk before “Barbie” could fly: Lego. Written and directed by Lord and Miller, “The Lego Movie” proved that movies based on toys could be so much more than a 90-minute commercial when it was released ten years ago. Although snubbed at the Oscars (not even garnering a nomination for best animated film), the Warner Bros. pic — like its eventual successor “Barbie” — was a hit with both audiences and critics.

Buoyed by “The Lego Movie’s” success, a string of spin-offs and sequels quickly followed – “The Lego Batman Movie” and “The Lego Ninjago Movie” in 2017 and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part...

The Correct Order To Watch The Aquaman Movies
Image
"Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" (read our review here) is now streaming on Max, and its arrival on streaming marks the official end of the old Dceu once orchestrated by Zack Snyder. Now, new DC films are in the hands of James Gunn and Peter Safran, with new actors coming in to play familiar DC heroes in brand-new stories. The old Dceu is now a thing of the past, and a reminder that reverse-engineering a superhero cinematic universe to compete with Marvel isn't an easy task.

And what of Aquaman? Jason Momoa's aquatic hero only got two movies of his own, but he appeared in a total of six. This might have you wondering: what the heck is the correct order to watch all the movies with Aquaman in them? If you're ready to sit down and watch "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," but want that question answered first, you're in luck!

Will The Lego Movie 3 Happen? Franchise Director Responds (Exclusive)
Mike Mitchell
Director Mike Mitchell gave an update on if he would be interested in returning to the franchise for The Lego Movie 3.

The last main entry in the saga (The Lego Movie 2) was released in 2019, and its story saw tense sibling (in the form of teenagers Finn and Bianca) frustrations playing out as an apocalyptic event for the fictional Bricksburg. The tale somehow got even crazier than the first installment, adding aliens and time travel to the mix.

While the sequel did not resonate quite as much as the original did, it still sits at a respectable 84% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Director of Disney’s Non-Marvel Superhero Movie Featuring Kurt Russell Wants Marvel to Make the Sequel But Fans Have a Better Idea
Image
Disney is a huge conglomerate with stakes in every genre of films and shows. The House of Mouse has established itself in genres such as sci-fi with Star Wars, animation with Pixar and Disney Animation, and the superhero genre with Marvel. The company also acquired Fox Studios, thus owning the Avatar franchise as well.

While Disney has been the parent company of these studios, they largely operate on their own. Hence, when Kung Fu Panda 4 director Mike Mitchell was asked if his Kurt Russell starring superhero film Sky High would get a sequel, he mentioned that it would make more sense for Marvel to take over and develop the film as Disney wanted Marvel to be in charge of superheroes.

Will Disney Make A Sequel For The Kurt Russell Starrer Sky High? A still from Disney’s Sky High

In 2005, Disney produced the superhero comedy film Sky High, which starred Michael Angarano,...

The irreverent humor and fantastical elements of Dick Turpin's adventures make the show appealing to fans of British comedy.

The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin has an expansive cast, with certain figures only making brief cameos while its other stars remain in the limelight. Certain actors in the production are well-known on the British entertainment scene, but other figures aren't quite as established as their co-stars.
