There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

The biggest upset of the event came with Cabaret losing out on the biggest award of the night, that of Best Musical, which went instead to Rupert Goold’s Spring Awakening. Berlin Pushing On Despite Rotterdam Online Move
The Berlin International Film Festival is still planned to take place in person after the Dutch lockdown forced the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) to move online for a second consecutive year. A spokesperson for Berlin confirmed to Deadline that the event is still due to take place in person in February. Fresh restrictions were introduced in Germany today, including a limit of private gatherings among vaccinated people to a maximum of 10. The news comes as late January event IFFR is moved online, just days after the government in the Netherlands announced a nationwide lockdown due to concerns over the Omicron variant, with all non-essential shops and cultural venues staying closed for at least a month. All sessions, which include the unveiling of Steve McQueen’s Sunshine State installation, will take place online instead from late January until early February. “The festival acknowledges...

UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has unveiled an extra £30M ($40M) to help theatres and museums in England impacted by the Omicron variant, while cinemas can apply for grants of up to £6,000 per premises.
The move comes as UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed there will be no new Covid measures in England before Christmas but said curbs could be imposed next week once more data on the Omicron variant is available.
Omicron has been causing mass cancellations of trips to cultural venues in the run up to Christmas, with Covid-19 case numbers just shy of 100,000 per day and Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently mandating for masks indoors and vaccine passports for plus-500 capacity venues. West End theaters have been pulling shows, with James Graham’s Best of Enemies and the Jessie Buckley/Eddie Redmayne-starring Cabaret both delayed until January.

ITV’s Good Morning Britain has been taken off air next week due to the Omicron variant and after presenter Sean Fletcher tested positive for Covid-19.
The British broadcaster confirmed that the show will no longer air between December 29 and December 31 but will return on Tuesday January 4 after New Year’s Day and a UK Bank Holiday on January 3.
A spokesman said the cancellation of next week’s episodes is due to “the pandemic and to protect our teams, so we have decided to give them an extended break.” A special Christmas Day version will still go ahead on Saturday morning.
The news is alarming as Gmb even aired during the height of last summer’s lockdown, when the entire country was forced to remain indoors.
It comes as the Omicron variant rages through the UK, with other European countries shutting their borders to the nation.

Update, 12/20: Best of Enemies, the stage play from James Graham (Quiz) currently being housed at London’s Young Vic, has cancelled performances through January 3 due to “extensive Covid disruption” among the show’s staff and production teams, according to the venue’s Twitter account.
The Young Vic’s social media team added that they hoped performances would resume from January 4.
The play becomes the latest West End show to be hit by disruption from the virus, with many theaters postponing multiple performances due to outbreaks.
At present UK theaters, and cinemas, remain open, but the government is meeting today to discuss several options for enhanced measures to stem the rapid spread of the Omicron variant in the country.

If conflict is at the heart of most documentaries, how do you make a film about the nicest, kindest, least conflict-ridden person in the history of television? More specifically, how do you make a doc about Mister Rogers? That was the task that faced Morgan Neville, who won an Oscar for “20 Feet From Stardom,” his film about the struggles faced by a group of backup singers. He was last at Sundance with “Best of Enemies,” a gripping doc about a series of epic (and vicious) debates between William Buckley Jr. and Gore Vidal. Fred Rogers, the subject of Neville’s new...

Focus Features has acquired the worldwide rights to Won't You Be My Neighbor, the new documentary about the life and work of Mister Fred Rogers. From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), the documentary is a Focus Features presentation of a Tremolo Production, in association with Impact Partners and Independent Lens/PBS. It is set to be released on June 8, 2018. Focus chairman Peter Kujawski made the announcement today, with the following statement.
"Morgan once again avoids making a traditional biodoc and instead takes us behind the curtain to see how Fred Rogers navigated the cultural and social issues of the second half of the twentieth century with his own brand of forward-thinking, compassionate wisdom far beyond his time. Mister Rogers makes us all want to be better people, and we couldn't be more proud to be a part of telling his story today."

Variety recently announced that Kevin Spacey is to bring Gore Vidal to our screens in a Netflix original film. Directed by Michael Hoffman (dir. The Last Station), Spacey might be the most perfect casting, and judging by some coded, jovial remarks at the Tony Awards this year, may relish a role like this.
Vidal's life has previously been on screen in documentaries: Gore Vidal: United States of Amnesia and Best of Enemies, about his combative relationship with William F. Buckley.
Vidal: Writer, bon vivant, public intellectual and unapologetic homosexual has a rich, albeit chequered history in cinema. Screenwriter for the frenzied Suddenly, Last Summer, debauched bloodbath Caligula and his own notorious novel Myra Breckinridge was adapted into X-rated 1970 film.
And as uncredited writer of Ben-Hur, he was responsible for those lingering glances between Stephen Boyd and Charlton Heston - not that Heston ever knew that...

Two cinematic legends are getting official documentaries next year. First up, we learned last year that an unused Ingmar Bergman script would be turned into a feature film in time for what would have been the director’s 100th birthday in 2018, and now we’re also getting a new documentary on the Swedish master.
Ingmar Bergman – Legacy of a Defining Genius, set to be directed by Margarethe von Trotta (who has previously worked with Sven Nykvist), will commence production this summer in time for a release next year, according to Screen Daily. "She believed the city is not about buildings, the city is about people." Need a good doc to rile you up and inspire you to get out there and fight back? Try this one. Sundance Selects has debuted a trailer for a documentary titled Citizen Jane: Battle for the City, profiling the activism work of Jane Jacobs. Jacobs fought to save historic New York City during the ruthless redevelopment era of urban planner Robert Moses in the 1960s. The doc focuses on construction kingpin Robert Moses' plan to raze lower Manhattan to make way for a highway. This seems like the perfect doc for the times, showing how passionate activism can actually make a difference. This also reminds me of another great battle of wits doc - Best of Enemies, which I also highly recommend seeing. Citizen Jane opens in NYC later this week, then La next week. Take a look.

Introducing Gay Talese, the author of The Voyeur's Motel (to be adapted for the screen by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, directed by Sam Mendes and produced by Steven Spielberg's DreamWorks) and Morgan Neville, the Oscar-winning director of 20 Feet From Stardom, at Lotos Club, created a Music Of Strangers conversation that lead to Alexander Payne's producer Jim Burke (Downsizing, The Descendants and Election) for A Beautiful Game, the Marx Brothers, Best Of Enemies, Keith Richards: Under the Influence and Joan Didion in Shotgun Freeway: Drives Through Lost L.A.

While the musician Yo-Yo Ma has become a relatively household name, being seen in people’s homes on television since the Kennedy Administration, the talented men and women that are members of his beloved Silk Road Ensemble haven’t quite seen the same pop culture transcendence. An oft-rotating lineup of people ranging from vocalists to visual artists, the Silk Road Ensemble draws from over 50 men and women from all walks of life. Less concerned with their race, religion, sexual orientation, language or any other superficial descriptor that’s seen as a boundary in today’s cultural landscape than each respective person’s ability to communicate clearly and passionately through their art, this ensemble is a moving distillation of the true power of art.

Documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville is hard to pin down. While he made his name with music docs, from Oscar-winner “20 Feet from Stardom” to Yo-Yo Ma concert film “The Music of Strangers” (HBO/The Orchard), he’s moving away from music subjects. “There are a handful of music docs I’d love to do, including David Bowie,” he said in a phone interview. “But at the moment I’m interested in stretching myself on projects on design, food, and art.”
Over the last year, Neville jumped into the debates between Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley for “Best of Enemies,” (Participant/Magnolia) and took an unexpected ride with Chelsea Handler on Netflix documentary series “Chelsea Does.”
Netflix approached Neville after working with him on “Keith Richards: Under the Influence.” Said Neville, “I’d worked on music docs for years. It felt like writing a novel. By the time I got to Keith Richards,...

Jonathan Gross, the president of the Canadian distributor, announced the rebrand on Tuesday 23 years after launching the company.
The full–service distributor owns a catalogue of hundreds of film and TV titles and has ongoing distribution agreements with Magnolia, Film Movement, Kino Lorber and Synapse, among others.
Upcoming films and TV releases include Sundance and Hot Docs Selection Tickled, Tiff selection Sunset Song, Participant’s new investigative series Truth & Power, and Canadian theatrical releases No Men Beyond This Point, and First Round Down, now in post-production.
“This is mostly cosmetic because the word ‘Video’ has become somewhat quaint in these meme-orable times” said Gross. “Vsc was actually concocted in a hurry because we started the company on short notice by buying the contents of Video Entertainment Corp. in Kitchener.

The 31st Independent Spirt Awards took place this Saturday, February 27 with the fiendishly talented and hilarious Kate McKinnon & Kumail Nanjiani co-hosting the event. Take a look at their parody of one of this year’s best films Room below. The show, as in years past, aligned with the Academy Awards in some moments, but also served to do what the Oscars can’t, or won’t in others. Perhaps that’s just as it should be. Brie Larson won for Best Female Lead for Room, and is very likely to win the Academy Award for Best Actress tomorrow night. However, Spotlight, which won Best Feature, Director, and Screenplay at the Spirit Awards is in a three way race with The Revenant and The Big Short for the top prize at the Oscars. Though it’s likely to take Best Screenplay there as well. Typically, the Academy favors flashier films, so...

Read: Camden International Film Festival Announces 2015 Winners, Including Oscar Hopeful 'Best of Enemies' The Camden International Film Festival (Ciff) has been operating since 2005 and has since become widely recognized for its programming and selections in non-fiction cinema. The coastal festival is set to gain even greater clout this year as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences makes the winner of the festival's Best Documentary Short prize eligible for the competitive Oscar in the same category. This year is the third year that the Academy has been involved with the festival, previously supporting their socially conscious programs and workshop series, which has slowly allowed Ciff to gain further footholds with the award organization. "2016 is shaping up to be a monumental year for Ciff," said Camden International Film Festival founder and Executive Director Ben Fowlie. "We’re extremely honored to receive recognition from such...

These are the debates we're having today.
The Americans that live in this country today would not have survived 1968. We have lost our collective shit about the color of a dress and the Nsa having data on phone calls. That's to say nothing of what's passing for the presidential primary contest right now. In 1968, Robert Kennedy was murdered after the California primary, Martin Luther King was murdered in Memphis, and there were riots throughout the country in April and well-televised police brutality at the Democratic convention in Chicago. That's to say nothing of the Vietnam war. Watching Best of Enemies (2015), about the "debates" between William F. Buckley Jr. and Gore Vidal during the Republican and Democratic conventions, it's hard to wrap your head around what would have seemed like a cultural tsunami to most people. As with the political trends of the time, these debates bestowed upon posterity a storm...

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. And ‘tis the season, or at least ‘thas (?) been in the recent past, for that most beloved of academic parlor games, bemoaning the death of cinema, which, if the sackcloth-and-ashes-clad among us are to be believed, is an increasingly detached and irrelevant art form in the process of being smothered under the wet, steaming blanket of American blockbuster-it is. And it’s going all malnourished from the siphoning off of all the talent back to TV, which, as everyone knows,...

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the nominees for their 2015 Eda Awards recognizing the amazing work done by and about women -- both in front and behind the camera. According to their site, "the EDAs are named in honor of Awfj founder Jennifer Merin.s mother, Eda Reiss Merin, a stage, film and television actress whose career spanned more than 60 years. A dedicated foot soldier in the industry, Eda was one of the founders of AFTRA and a long-standing Member of AMPAS."
Todd Haynes' "Carol" led the pack with nine nominations, followed by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with six, "Room" and "Spotlight" with five each, and "The Martian" with four.
I wish I can vote for the Eda Awards because their Special Mention Awards are just too darn fun with categories like "Best Nudity," and "Actress Most In Need of a New Agent!"

The 2015 Ida Documentary Awards took place at the Paramount Theater hosted by comedian Tig Notaro. Notaro was quick to point out this was the first year of the awards being “broadcasted…” on Periscope, and for that reason alone maybe the last.
The Best Feature Award was given to Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Look of Silence,” which made the Oscar shortlist earlier in the week and happens to be the film companion for “The Act of Killing.” “The Look of Silence” has been banned in Indonesia and screenings of the film are only available through NGOs, schools/universities, religious organizations and other limited outlets.

The winner for Best Short Award went to the animated short “Last Day of Freedom” directed by Dee Hibbert-Jones and Nomi Talisman. The directors thanked the Ida for giving the award to an animated film.

Ida’s Career Achievement Award was presented to Gordon Quinn, Founder and Artistic Director of Kartemquin Films. The award was presented by Chaz Ebert, whose husband Roger Ebert was the subject of Quinn’s film “Life Itself” and by Haskell Wexler, influential cinematographer, producer, and director.
Academy Award® winning director Kathryn Bigelow presented the Courage Under Fire Award to Director Matthew Heineman for his immersive and brave work in the pursuit of truth in “Cartel Land.” Bigelow executive produced Heineman’s “Cartel Land.”

The last few days of 2015 are spent in reflection about the year that's just wrapping up and in anticipation of the year just ahead, at least for me, and since we had our ten best list last week, this week it's time for the runners-up, the fifteen films that also filled out our year. As always, I look at this list and I think it would make a perfectly spiffy top ten if that's how things had shaken out, which is to say that the only real purpose of any of these lists is to remind you of more of the experiences that were worth having in a theater. There are plenty of good films that aren't on either of my lists this year. That doesn't mean I didn't like them or they're not good. It just means that these films meant more to me for some reason. For now,...

'Mad Max: Fury Road': National Board of Review Best Film Award winner. National Board of Review 2015 Awards: First indication of 'Mad Max: Fury Road' awards season potential Going over the December 2015 movie awards not previously discussed on this site, we begin with the National Board of Review Awards, announced on Dec. 1. (Scroll down for the full list of winners.) Since then, among other awards and nominations, Mad Max: Fury Road – a Mad Max reboot of sorts starring Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy, and Nicholas Hoult – has been shortlisted for two Golden Globes, including Best Picture - Drama,...

The tragic downfall of artists, behind the scenes of a genocide and the war on drugs, celebrations of music and locales, a look into the political divide from multiple angles, the history of a legendary conversation on filmmaking — these were just a few of the places and stories this year’s documentary offerings brought us. With 2015 wrapping up, we’ve selected 25 features in the field that most impressed us, so check out our list below and let us know your favorites in the comments.
Amy (Asif Kapadia)
Asif Kapadia entered cinematic radars with his BAFTA-winning Senna, a terrific documentary on the life and tragic death of Formula 1 race car driver Ayrton Senna. The subject matter of his follow-up documentary doesn’t seem, at first, to be a million miles away. Amy, which screened out of competition in Cannes, follows the meteoric rise and tragic fall of the late singer Amy Winehouse.
