Hollywood icon and Severance director Ben Stiller reveals the Star Trek connection behind his most treasured possession.
Stiller recently opened up about his love of Star Trek while answering the Proust Questionnaire for Vanity Fair. Among the questions asked by the iconic Proust Questionnaire is "What is your most prized possession," to which Stiller responded, "The Spock ears that Leonard Nimoy gave to me." When asked what his greatest extravagance was, Stiller pointed to the rest of his expansive (and expensive) collection of Star Trek memorabilia.

Star Trek has two TV series guaranteed for the next two years, and yet it feels like the franchise is on the wane. Star Trek television was resurrected by Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, which was the first new Star Trek TV series in 12 years after Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled in 2005. Discovery's success ushered in an expansive Star Trek on Paramount+ streaming franchise, which came to boast Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Although there have been 13 Star Trek theatrical movies - and the first Star Trek made-for-streaming movie, Star Trek: Section 31, premieres January 24 on Paramount+ - Star Trek has always been fundamentally a TV franchise. Star Trek is at its best on television, which allows for the long-form storytelling needed to explore complex moral quandaries and Star Trek's massive pantheon of beloved characters.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5, Episode 9 - "Fissure Quest"
19 years after Star Trek: Enterprise ended, Jolene Blalock is back as T'Pol in Star Trek: Lower Decks, and she is perfect. In its final season on Paramount+, Star Trek: Lower Decks set the USS Cerritos on a mission to close rifts leading to alternate Star Trek timelines. However, Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, episode 9 centers on a different starship, the Defiant Class Anaximander led by Captain William Boimler (Jack Quaid), which Section 31 charged with a mission to stop a rogue vessel that's threatening Star Trek's multiverse.
Jolene Blalock portrayed Subcommander T'Pol in all four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise. Clad in skintight catsuits, Blalock cut a striking figure as T'Pol, who Enterprise retconned as the first Vulcan Science Officer on a Starfleet vessel. Even Marvel has to make a crack at Cyclops' biggest problem. Scott Summers has a problem with women. It's not that he doesn't respect them. Cyclops adores women and, under the right leadership, he will take authority from women ... but he may love women a little too much. In layman's terms - Cyclops can't keep it in his pants.
Even Marvel via an X post have to acknowledge Cyclops' most recurring issue. This week, New York repealed a law dating back to 1907 that made the act of adultery a crime punishable of at least a three-month jail sentence. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is shaping up to be a tragedy for Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck). Debuting in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Ethan Peck plays the younger version of Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) in Star Trek's Prime Timeline. In the years before he joins Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) in Star Trek: The Original Series, Lt. Spock serves as Chief Science Officer on the USS Enterprise, commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). But Spock's road to becoming the Vulcan Leonard Nimoy embodied hasn't been easy.

Unfortunately, not everyone in Hollywood can get along. There have been many high-profile feuds between some of the richest and most famous people in the world, and the details of these are often splashed over tabloid newspaper headlines and celebrity gossip websites.
Some of these feuds are eventually mended, while others go on forever and become Hollywood legends. Occasionally, though, the fight makes a movie better rather than worse, even though the process of making it isn't great for those who have to deal with the warring actors on set.

What happened? If you were unaware, Jamie is very allergic to horses.
“I like them as a species,” he explained, adding, “I just can’t get close.”
In fact, his allergies are so extreme that he needed multiple EpiPens while filming his first movie Marie Antoinette. There were even concerns that they wouldn’t be able to insure him for the movie.
Years after the trouble on Marie Antoinette, Jamie filmed with a horse again for New Worlds. All went according to plan,...

DS9's "If Wishes Were Horses" episode brought together the worlds of Star Trek and the Brothers Grimm, using imagination as a means of interaction with the crew. Like Strange New Worlds, DS9's fairy tale episode centers around the relationship between a father and his daughter, with a double-edged sword of dreams coming true. The connection between DS9 and Strange New Worlds is further solidified by the revelation that Benny Russell, a character in DS9, is a real author in the Trek universe.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine did a fairy tale episode decades before Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' "The Elysian Kingdom." For two seasons, Strange New Worlds has brilliantly embraced multiple genres, from survival horror to musical. For example, Snw season 1, episode 8, "The Elysian Kingdom" was a fairy tale adventure that saw Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise bring a children's adventure story to life.

Warning: Spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4, Episode 6 - "Parth Ferengi's Heart Place"
Key Takeaways: Captain Pike's secret negotiation tactic of understanding others' perspectives is effective, as shown in both Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Captain Freeman applies Pike's tactic when negotiating with the Ferengi Alliance, recognizing their cultural values and respecting them. The principle of empathy is emphasized in Star Trek, allowing adversaries to become allies, and Pike and Freeman exemplify this by fostering understanding with different cultures for the benefit of the Federation.

Grapplers were a primitive form of technology used on the Nx-01 Enterprise in Star Trek: Enterprise, serving as a predecessor to tractor-beams. The grapplers were metal cables with a magnetic clamping device used to catch and hold onto other starships or objects in space. Grapplers could be used for towing, catching, and even as weapons, showcasing the rough-and-tumble era of Starfleet and the bold spirit of adventure.
Star Trek: Enterprise's grapplers have fans in Lt. LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) and Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), but what is this 22nd-century Starfleet technology? During the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks, the Nx-01 Enterprise commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) was pivotal in sending Ensigns Boimler and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) back to the 24th century. Mariner and Boimler's knowledge of the Nx-01 was the key, and this included the original Enterprise's famed grapplers.

If "Star Trek" is about going boldly where no one has gone before, well, this latest episode of "Strange New Worlds" truly went for it. Luckily, it's difficult to imagine any other franchise feeling better equipped to suddenly drop a musical episode the likes of "Subspace Rhapsody" into the mix. (Feel free to check out /Film's review by Witney Seibold here.) But the thing about big swings is that they're always going to hit all the right notes for some fans (see what I did there?) while striking the wrong tone for others, leaving the creative team in the unenviable spot of having to figure out how far might be too far.
One such moment rears its cranial-ridged forehead in the grand finale of the episode, when the plot requires that as many people as possible break out into song in order to fix the subspace rift that threatens to overwhelm the entire galaxy.

The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 9, "Subspace Rhapsody," now streaming on Paramount+.
Perhaps the biggest surprise in Season 2 of Strange New Worlds is just how close Lieutenant Spock and Nurse Christine Chapel get. The two have always been drawn to each other in the show, but with T'Pring and Spock going on a break, it has allowed Spock to give in to his feelings for her. However, the Strange New Worlds musical episode interestingly subverts the relationship between Chapel and Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series.
During Chapel's song in the episode, Spock learns that she has been accepted to a three-month program studying archaeological medicine. He storms off, obviously bothered by both her impending departure and how he discovered she'd been accepted. In The Original Series, Chapel's feelings for Spock are depicted as an out-of-control "crush." Fans of that series know that when Chapel studies with Dr.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is made up of a colorful cast of characters, old and new. The series highlights some lesser-known figures from The Original Series, such as Captain Pike and Una Chin Riley, formerly known as Number One. It takes a deeper look at these characters, exploring and expanding their backstairs while introducing them anew to fresh eyes that enter the franchise for the first time. Throughout the second season's first half, there has been a pretty in-depth look at most of the series' main characters.
Still, one character that is pretty steeped in mystery is Dr. Joseph M'Benga. Featured in two episodes of The Original Series, M'Benga really only comes into the spotlight during Strange New Worlds. His character has been through a lot during the show,...

This was the year that San Diego Comic-Con was supposed to collapse. After all, with Hollywood studios pulling out and stars not able to promote their work, all due to the double whammy of the actors and writers strikes, why would people even bother to attend?
Well, about 150,000 attendees did, indeed, show up. There were no mass hotel cancellations nor mass refunds issued for badges, which were purchased months in advance. And an interesting thing happened on the way to the Comic-Con apocalypse. There was a renewed focus on comics and other graphic arts, even as Hollywood showed up in a diminished capacity.
“This year, more than ever, it felt like the real focus was the talent behind the origins of a lot of their entertainment,” says Jimmy Palmiotti, a writer-artist who has worked for Marvel and DC and created the comic Painkiller Jane, which was adapted into a SyFy series in 2007.

While it's not explicitly stated, Paul Wesley's James T. Kirk is expected to appear multiple times in Strange New Worlds Season 2. His second comes during "Lost in Translation," giving fans the best Kirk and Uhura adventure they've ever had. Also, possibly, the only one. Kirk meets another of his future bridge officers, and the fandom may care more about that. Nonetheless, this episode helps explain why Lieutenant Uhura was one of the most loyal members of Captain Kirk's crew.
While Uhura was in all but 11 episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series, she and Kirk were never paired together. Like Melissa Navia's Erica Ortegas, she rarely gets to go on away missions. Her duties on the ship as communications officer can be just as crucial to the crew's...

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 3, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," now streaming on Paramount+.
The third episode of Strange New Worlds brings back James T. Kirk, this time making him the captain of the Enterprise in a timeline without the Federation. It's already the second time-travel episode in the series, but it just fixed Star Trek's biggest history problem: the rise of Khan Noonien Singh.
When the infamous Khan first appeared in Star Trek, he was found in stasis on a pre-warp vessel launched from Earth in the 1990s. Anticipating the problem with the future catching up to his series, Roddenberry fudged it by saying the resulting World War III left very inconsistent records of the time. For fans interested in organizing the universe's timeline, the Khan problem only got bigger as the 1990s came and went without a society-destroying war led by genetically augmented individuals.

For the second time, Strange New Worlds focused a story on Star Trek's first favorite captain: James T. Kirk. However, thanks to the reality-bending time travel story, it was not the Captain Kirk fans know. The ending of the episode also could tie into Star Trek: Picard and the mysterious vault discovered containing Kirk's body.
Brannon Braga and Ronald D. Moore, two longtime writers on the Rick Berman-era Star Trek series, were responsible for "killing" Captain Kirk. Strange New Worlds just joined the exclusive Star Trek club by killing him again. Kirk almost died during the Season 1 finale of Strange New Worlds, thankfully in an alternate timeline. Similarly, the Kirk who pals around with LA'an Noonien Singh in "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" is also one from an alternate timeline.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was conceived to address a creative loss at the very beginning of Star Trek. "The Cage" -- the original pilot intended to sell the series to network executives -- was deemed a no-go for reasons that have aged poorly in the extreme. Strange New Worlds picks up the adventures of that crew, who were replaced in the second pilot by the "classic" cast led by William Shatner's Captain Kirk. In the process, it gives them a chance to shine on their own terms, while exploring the creative potential that otherwise would have been lost. Hence, figures like Christopher Pike and Una Chin-Riley take center stage.

One of the most complex and complicated relationships in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is between Spock (Ethan Peck) and Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), and it's poised to only grow more nuanced in Season 2. The trailer for Strange New Worlds Season 2 has teased a budding romance between the two Enterprise crew mates and friends while facing the dangers of the final frontier together. In 1995, we screamed, “Hack the planet!” Today, my mom can watch any movie on her phone. When we walk around with computers in our pockets, fantasies about jacking into cyberspace and accessing vast amounts of information seem quaint, if not outright laughable. But it’s that very mundane nature that makes cyberpunk such an important genre, even in 2023.
The cyberpunk genre began in literature, first in stories published in the UK magazine New Worlds and later in novels from writers such as William Gibson (Neuromancer), J.G. Ballard (High Rise), and Philip K. Dick. These writers took a darker look at the technology of the future, showing how new inventions did nothing to change inequality and corruption, only reinforcing the worst parts of humanity.
For most people, cinematic cyberpunk is synonymous with 1982’s Blade Runner, an adaption of the Dick book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

Star Trek loves a good courtroom drama. The back and forth of legal arguments make a great fulcrum for the kind of moral quandaries that the franchise thrives on and has resulted in some of the strongest episodes it ever produced. That includes everything from Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 2, Episode 9, "The Measure of a Man" to Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Episode 20, "Supernova, Part 2." It's no surprise that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds intends to make use of a trial episode too, as evinced by the recent release of a clip covering Una Chin-Riley's case before Starfleet.
Though not directly connected, Strange New Worlds' upcoming trial echoes the very first time the franchise delved into the courtroom. The Original Series Season 1, Episodes 11 and 12, "The Menagerie," essentially repackaged the pilot "The Cage" for airing on the revamped series. A recently released clip for the upcoming second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds reveals new connections between the crew. More specifically, it shows scenes from the upcoming trial of Una Chin-Riley, dramatically placed under arrest at the conclusion of Season 1 for attempting to hide her genetic augmentation. The new clip confirms another key piece of information revealed earlier in the series: the Enterprise's security chief LA'an Noonien-Singh is a descendant of megalomaniacal Augment Khan Noonien-Singh. The upcoming season promises to further develop that connection and its effect on LA'an.
It also requires a bit of an explanation. Strange New Worlds takes place before Khan's two canon appearances in the main Star Trek timeline, which complicates the question of LA'an's ancestry. But it also connects to Una's ongoing dilemma and the larger question of augments, which has become one of the franchise's dominant recurring plot lines. In the process,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has revealed the episode titles for season 2, including the finale, "Hegemony" which hints at a potential but huge Star Trek: The Original Series retcon. Meriam-Webster defines hegemony as "the social, cultural, ideological, or economic influence exerted by a dominant group", which could easily refer to Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise freeing an oppressed civilization. However, it's more likely that the finale title refers to the Gorn Hegemony, the territory of the vicious reptilian species first encountered by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) in the classic Tos episode "Arena".
The Gorn have emerged as the big threat in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, playing an integral role in the tragic backstory of Lieutenant LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) and killing off beloved Enterprise engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak). Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has a secret weapon that makes him such a great Captain. Finally giving the third Captain of the USS Enterprise the spotlight, Strange New Worlds follows Pike, Spock (Ethan Peck), and the crew of the Enterprise as they explore the galaxy. As one of Starfleet's most decorated officers, Captain Pike commands his ship with nearly unmatched confidence, proficiency, and empathy. Somehow, he feels nostalgic and modern at the same time, and embodies all of Starfleet's most essential ideals.
The character of Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) was introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series' unaired pilot, "The Cage," and made an appearance in the later Tos two-part episode, "The Menagerie." Though Captain Pike was only seen briefly as the captain of the Enterprise on Tos, "The Menagerie" reveals his story's tragic end. After passing the Enterprise to Captain Kirk (William Shatner...

The trailer for Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds appears to cry uncle on the question of Klingons. The species' visual reimagining in Star Trek: Discovery created an uproar among the Star Trek faithful, and while the controversy was never as heated as it sometimes appeared, it apparently resulted in some big changes -- or rather, a reversal -- for Strange New Worlds. Discovery's Klingons simply differed too much to explain away in canon, and Strange New Worlds' second season makes it appear as though the franchise is officially acknowledging the fact.
The Klingons' reveal in Strange New Worlds is the latest chapter in one of the longest -- and weirdest -- retcons in all of pop culture. The Klingons underwent a similar appearance change for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, leading to decades of puzzlement within the fanbase. Discovery made the same decision for similar reasons, and this time,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has finally given Star Trek: The Original Series' Number One (Majel Barrett) from Tos' unaired pilot "The Cage" the backstory she's deserved for 56 years. When Strange New Worlds', Number One (Rebecca Romijn), first appeared in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, the character was essentially a blank canvas. This is because Majel Barrett's original character was never seen again after scenes from "The Cage" were re-purposed for the Tos 2-parter "The Menagerie."
The lack of knowledge about Number One has allowed Strange New Worlds' writing team to approach her as a fresh and completely new character, giving her a backstory that built to season 1's cliffhanger ending. The most notable thing about Strange New Worlds' Number One is that her presence on the bridge isn't a novelty. She's part of a far more diverse bridge crew than in Star Trek's unaired pilot, so it's a welcome...

Star Trek: Enterprise season 4 reintroduced T'Pau (Kara Zediker), the younger version of the revered Vulcan icon played by Celia Lovsky in Star Trek: The Original Series. T'Pau was crucial to the Enterprise season 4 Vulcan-centric three-episode story arc, "The Forge," "Awakening," and "KirShara." Those episodes also featured notable guest stars in Robert Foxworth, who previously played Admiral Leyton on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as Administrator V'Las, and Todd Stashwick, who now embodies Captain Liam Shaw in Star Trek: Picard season 3, as Talok.
T'Pau's first appearance was in the Star Trek: The Original Series classic, "Amok Time." Described as "all of Vulcan in one package" and the only person to ever turn down a seat on the Federation council, T'Pau officiated the kal-if-fee ritual combat between Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Spock's fiancée, T'Pring (Arlene Martel), wanted to end their betrothal and Kirk was manipulated into...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 can fix one of the franchise's biggest mistakes by revisiting Sybok, Spock's half-brother who was introduced in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Played by noted stage actor Laurence Luckinbill, Sybok was a Vulcan revolutionary, rejecting the teachings of logic in favor of embracing emotion. He was exiled from Vulcan and never mentioned by Spock before the events of The Final Frontier.
Sybok had enhanced telepathic abilities that he could have used to force people to relive traumatic events, ostensibly to relieve them of their pain. In actuality, Sybok used these powers to recruit followers on his quest to find Sha Ka Ree, a location from Vulcan mythology where all of existence was said to have begun. Sybok was able to convert most of Kirk's crew to his cause and commandeered the USS Enterprise-a before he eventually realized he was pursuing a false god.

Captain James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) behaves differently in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 1 finale, which indicates that Kirk was changed by not being Captain of the Enterprise. Strange New Worlds' season 1 finale, "A Quality of Mercy," brought Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) into an alternate future where he was in command of the Starship Enterprise during the Star Trek: The Original Series episode, "Balance of Terror." Kirk joined Pike's mission as Captain of the USS Farragut, and his demeanor was markedly different from the Kirk Star Trek fans are familiar with.
Captain Kirk (William Shatner) is famed for rushing in where angels fear to tread. Kirk is arguably the greatest Captain of the Enterprise, and his fearless risk-taking has saved the galaxy on multiple occasions. While Kirk does harbor occasional self-doubt and privately questions himself, the Captain projects supreme confidence on the bridge, and he's commanded the Enterprise on numerous harrowing missions,...
