Jeonju festival crowns Brazil's 'Rifle', France's 'The Park'
The Seeds Of Violence, Blue Butterfly Effect also win awards at Korean festival.

The 18th Jeonju International Film Festival (Jiff) has crowned its award winners for 2017, with Davi Pretto’s Rifle taking the Grand Prize worth KW20m ($18,000) in the international competition.

The Brazilian film shows what happens when a rich landowner starts buying land in a remote area and in response, a young man feels his only protection from this is his rifle.

Thanking the fest and jury, Pretto noted this was the first time he had shown the film in Asia.

”It was amazing to meet the audience and show our film, and incredible to meet our colleagues - our new friends now - from all over the planet,” he said.

Also in the international competition, the best picture prize, a.k.a. the Woosuk Award which comes with $10,000, went to French film The Park, directed by Damien Manivel. He echoed...

Rifle (2016)
A potential nail-biter of a scenario suffers from some highly minimalist storytelling in Rifle, which marks the second feature of Brazilian director Davi Pretto (‘Castanha’). With an effective title and promising pitch, this tale of a lonely farmhand who fights back against wealthy land-grabbers could have been a solidly engaging social thriller, and one with enough pyrotechnics to keep one riveted. But despite a few explosive moments and lots of remarkable scenery, the film’s all-too naturalistic approach and underwhelming performances will make it a tough sell outside of the festival circuit.

This year’s Forum programme at the Berlin Film Festival (Feb 9-19), which highlights avant garde and experimental works, will feature 47 films, including 29 world premieres.

These include the premiere of Laura Schroeder’s Barrage, which stars Isabelle Huppert alongside her daughter Lolita Chammah in the story of a young woman who returns to Luxembourg after a 10-year absence to spend time with her estranged child. Huppert plays the grandmother, who has fostered the young girl during that absence.

Having its international premiere at Forum this year will be Golden Exits, the new feature from American filmmaker Alex Ross Perry. Berlin Film Festival Adds ‘Golden Exits’ and ‘Menashe’ to 2017 Line-Up

The 67th Berlin International Film Festival announced 43 additions to its 2017 roster today, including Alex Ross Perry’s “Golden Exits,” Joshua Z. Weinstein’s “Menashe,” and Amman Abbasi’s “Dayveon,” and rounding out much of the festival’s main line-up.

Known for its robust variety of programming, the festival previously announced new films from Aki Kaurismaki, Oren Moverman, Sally Potter, Agnieszka Holland, and Sebastian Lelio. More commercial fare includes the international premiere of Danny Boyle’s “Trainspotting” sequel, and the world premiere of James Mangold’s addition to the Wolverine franchise, “Logan.”
