Incoherent to Sustain Suspense

Crime and Thrill need proper action sequences. After all, what makes such cinematic creation successful is suspense. Retaining suspense all through makes such celluloid creations great. This is not only challenging but tough one as well. In this age when crime-thriller is a craze, the movies and the new incarnation of celluloid art namely web series have made a lot of innovative and successful experiments to entertain the audiences and viewers across the world exploring crime of different genre.

India has followed the global trend as well. During the last few years, Indian cinema made a lot of successful efforts and created several movies and web series exploring crime in different languages. The Bengali Crime Thriller Web Series Kaalratri is another such effort. The word Kaalratri means frightful night. But the word also refers to the Bengali tradition related to marriage. This is the night after the marriage ceremony when bride enters the house of her in-laws for the first time after marriage. The web series starts narrating the same.

But the theme of the web series is weak. Repeated mention of certain murder of the groom in that night makes it predictable. In fact, the first episode spoils the series and the narrative becomes too monotonous which is bound to distract attention. Similarly, the series depicts too many characters and incoherent incidents. Depiction of the past of the investigating officer, shifting sequences, and fluctuating narratives expose that the theme of the web series is not at all impressive. A cinematic art can never be successful with weak theme. Really, the theme is disappointing.

Similarly, the web series have failed in building characters. In fact, in such incoherent theme, the characters do not get chance to explore. Only positive side is: the reality remains veiled till the end. One may watch but definitely not recommended to experience suspense and thrill.
