‘Travelers’ Review: Netflix’s Fun and Freaky Time-Travel Series Makes Us Appreciate Our Present Time
Eric McCormack, Patrick Gilmore, MacKenzie Porter, Reilly Dolman, Jared Abrahamson, and Nesta Cooper in Les Voyageurs du Temps (2016)
At this point, seasoned Netflix viewers may feel like they’ve seen it all when it comes to imaginative storytelling, whether it be science fiction, supernatural, fantasy or whatever “The Oa” is. The streaming platform’s latest foreign acquisition, Canada’s “Travelers,” is a much simpler type of project, almost a throwback, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Released on the same day as Guillermo Del Toro’s family-friendly “Trollhunters” and the “Sense8” Christmas special, it appears that “Travelers” is meant to be the third leg in the triumvirate of holiday-binge programming. And in that vein, it fits. It contains just enough intrigue for continuous viewing, but is light enough to not over-tax one’s spirits during such a hectic season.

Fox's Lucifer: How the Hell Was It?
Tom Ellis in Lucifer (2016)
If you had a single shred of doubt that Fox’s Lucifer is indeed about the Devil himself, not to worry: Monday’s series premiere runneth over with religious jokes and hellish puns.

Take, for example, Det. Chloe Dancer’s reaction when she’s introduced to Lucifer Morningstar: “Is that a stage name or something?,” to which the titular Lord of Hell replies, “God-given, I’m afraid.” (Ba-dum-chh.)

His license plate reads FALLIN1. Any reference to God elicits the response, “Wrong deity, but…” Plus, when he looks in the mirror, a grotesque red face is staring back at him. So,...

Tom Ellis in Lucifer (2016)
“I didn’t leave Hell just to step into another one,” huffs Fox’s newest crime solver Lucifer, complaining about being called in to investigate the murder of a security guard who’s neither interesting nor handsome.

Yet while series star Tom Ellis (Rush) infuses the devil with enough roguish charm to leave the audience more amused than aghast at such naughty one-liners, the unfortunate fact remains that the case-of-the-week aspects of Lucifer sometimes feel a bit like torture.

Lucifer has found his leading lady.

Chicago Fire‘s Lauren German will play a homicide detective entranced (and disgusted) by the Dark Prince in Fox’s DC Comics drama pilot, our sister site Deadline reports.

In the potential series, German’s Chloe Dancer works for the Los Angeles Police Department and teams up with Lucifer (played by Rush‘s Tom Ellis), who has abandoned Hell and chosen to help L.A.’s finest apprehend and punish criminals. Their partnership causes the Lord of the Underworld to wonder at Chloe’s inherent goodness, which in turn causes him to think humanity...

Lucifer: Tom Ellis cast as lead in comic book pilot
Comic book adaptation Lucifer has found its leading man – EastEnders, Doctor Who and Miranda star Tom Ellis…

Adding another name to the long list of British actors who have headed to Hollywood to portray American comic book characters, Welsh actor Tom Ellis has now been cast in Fox’s Lucifer pilot, as you may have heard over the weekend.

Depending on your tastes in television, there are many roles you could recognise Tom Ellis from. He landed a small but significant role as Thomas Milligan in Doctor Who’s Last Of The Time Lords, a 29-episode stint as Dr. Oliver in EastEnders and a series regular role as Gary in BBC comedy Miranda. To our cousins across the pond, he might be better known as William P. Rush in the medical-themed TV drama Rush.

He will take the title role in Lucifer, based on Mike Carey and Peter Gross’ comic of the same name,...

Tom Ellis Cast as ‘Lucifer’ in Fox Series
Tom Ellis in Lucifer (2016)
Fox has a new DC Comics-based series in development, but it’s something very different from the Batman origin story Gotham. Lucifer is based, perhaps loosely, upon the vision of the fallen angel originally seen in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, and will follow the Morningstar to Los Angeles, where he helps cops solve crimes. (Seriously.) Now Tom Ellis (Rush) […]

Tom Ellis Lands Leading Role In Fox’s Lucifer Pilot
Fox’s Lucifer pilot has bagged its horned antihero in the shape of Welsh actor, Tom Ellis. Known for his extensive television work in the UK, Ellis made waves in a variety of popular British shows including No Angels, Merlin, Rush and Miranda. He will soon be packing his bags for the sunny climes of Los Angeles as he prepares for his latest small screen performance as king of hell, Lucifer Morningstar.

Late last year, when the show was granted an initial pilot commitment, it was expected that it would stick closely to the comic series. Created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg, the original DC Comics-run centers on Lucifer who, “bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, resigns his throne and abandons his kingdom for the gorgeous, shimmering insanity of Los Angeles, where he opens an exclusive piano bar called Lux.”

However, along with the...

DC's 'Lucifer' TV Show Casts Tom Ellis as the Lead
Tom Ellis in Lucifer (2016)
Just one week after Fox issued a pilot order for their DC Comics adaptation Lucifer, Tom Ellis has signed on to play the title character. The pilot is based on DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg. Lucifer first appeared in several issues of Neil Gaiman's beloved comic Sandman, before getting his own comic series written by Mike Carey.

The show centers on the Lord of Hell (Tom Ellis), who grows bored of reigning over the underworld. He decides to abandon his post and head to Los Angeles, where he helps the Lapd punish criminals. An earlier version of the pilot still had Lucifer coming to L.A., but instead he opens a piano bar entitled Lux. That aspect of the story will not be used in this new version of the pilot.

Californication creator Tom Kapinos wrote the pilot script, and he will...

Rush: Cancelled by USA, No Season Two
The doctor is out. USA Network has decided to cancel their Rush TV show after one season of 10 episodes.

Rush revolves around a talented and handsome physician (Tom Ellis) who had it all -- but then lost it in one fateful night. Six years later, he's a private doctor who treats less-than-squeaky-clean clientele in Los Angeles. The rest of the cast includes Harry Hamlin, Larenz Tate, Odette Annable, and Sarah Habel.

Debuting mid-July, the first episode of Rush attracted 1.7 million viewers with a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Not a very good start. The numbers for later episodes went up and down and the season averaged 1.65 million with a 0.4 in the demo.

Satisfaction, another new drama, had very similar ratings and either show could have been cancelled or renewed. USA ultimately chose to drop Rush and renew...
