The One That Got Away

This six part Welsh drama is set in the town of Pembroke Dock. When a nurse is found murdered in Cleddau Woods police are reminded of a similar case that occurred some time ago. Since a man is already in gaol for the previous killing it looks as if there is a copycat at work... or they got the wrong man before. DS Rick Sheldon is leading the case but when links to the old case are found DI Ffion Lloyd, who also worked that case, is called in from Cardiff. This leads to some tension as they had been involved with each other before he left her for the woman who is now his wife.

I thought this was a solid addition to the 'Cambri-Noir' genre; I'm certainly glad my newspaper recommended it as I doubt I would have seen it otherwise. The case is interesting as are the main characters. There are a good selection of suspects which should keep the viewer guessing. The relationship issues are perhaps unnecessary but don't detract from the story too much. Pembrokeshire may be an attractive part of these islands but the way this is shot manages to create an ominous feel. The cast does a fine job bringing the characters to life; most obviously Elen Rhys and Richard Harrington who play DI Lloyd and DS Sheldon respectively. As the story approaches its conclusion there are some nice twists and turns. By the end the case may be wrapped up but it feels like we might not have seen the last of these characters. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to viewers who enjoyed shows like 'Hinterland' from a few years ago which also starred Richard Harrington.

These comments are based on watching the series in Welsh with English subtitles as shown on S4C. I believe an English version titled 'The One That Got Away' will air later, presumably on BBC4 if it follows the pattern set by 'Hinterland'.

Disappointed.

We like so much British TV we thought this would be good. It has Erin Rhys and she was great in The Mallorca files and there were other competent actors in the cast. The downfall begins in the "Welsh noir" of the writing and kinda twisty romantic sidestory and the plot of the murders. The colors and scenes in the filming are too dark or somber,, The sidestory in the end becomes the main plot and the solution to the mystery becomes more clouded or uncertain and for these reasons it leaves one very unsatisfied. It is similar to the Welsh series Hinterland or Y GWYLL which also started with promise and interesting quality but just got depressing. We were let down by the ending and twists in the storyline and abruptness of the finish and lack of resolutions.

Am enjoyable Welsh murder mystery.

The community of Pembroke Dock is rocked, when Abbi Rayner, a nurse is killed, twelve years after Paul Harvey was convicted for killing two other nurses, DI Ffion Lloyd is drafted in the head the case, along with DS Rick Sheldon, the pair know eachother well.

It's a very good, Welsh drama, there was enough here to make me want to binge watch it in two sittings, if you're a fan of Hinterland and Hidden, you'll enjoy this.

It's a typically murky storyline, with plenty of suspects, the obligatory friction between the two central characters, and there's the dysfunctional family.

I wasn't crazy initially about Rick and Ffion knowing one another, I felt that idea has been overdone, but it worked well in the end.

Episode three was the big turning point for me, I thought it was terrific, really had me on the edge of my seat.

You'll recognise so many faces, including Richard Harrington and Elen Rhys, but if you've enjoyed the aforementioned dramas, you'll recognise plenty more.

The acting is first rate, the whole cast perform so well, I'd have to make a special mention for Matthew Aubrey though, I thought he was terrific as Mel Owen.

7/10.

Almost good

We watch all the UK detective series and tried this because Richard Harrington is always pretty good since we first saw him on Hinterland. And he's good here too. Can't say it's aterribly original plot, with the reliable blend of false identities, family secrets, and discord between the male/female detective leads. But it held our interest well enough. However the last 30 seconds of the series, the thing which gives the show its name, is just preposterous. It simply couldn't happen based on what we'd just seen for 51 minutes. Not unless the entire criminal justice system has been ignored. Wales has to do better than that.

Entertaining welsh crime

As a big fan of good TV crime, I found a lot to enjoy here. The series is both exciting, has good characters played by convincing actors and filmed in beautiful surroundings in Wales. The series has 6 episodes. For my part, I think the quality of the episodes was variable. It starts very exciting, nail-biting, creepy and a promising start. Halfway through the series, I fall off a bit. The story becomes more elaborate with a focus on not only the current case, but also murders far back in time. Then I think there is a lot of dialogue, investigation, back and forth. This at the expense of the excitement that I am looking for in such series. But by all accounts, this one is far above the majority of crime TV. It just doesn't manage to keep me on my toes the whole way.

Up to the standard you expect

This is what you would expect from the BBC and others.

Usual array of suspects and diversions. Worth watching and probably not for watching in a binge, as you want time to digest.

The usual use of the weather to set scenes and move the plot on.

There is good complexity of character development and the dialogue is believable.

I do wonder if there is always doubt about those higher up,.

And of course the bloke with the glasses is a bit mysterious.

I do wish they made them call "Taser, taser , taser" when they use them, but you can't have everything.

Can you?

And no CGI or AI.

Nice.

And satisfying at the end.

Fine

This series is one of those that are just ok, nothing too bad but nothing too good either. It is just a who did it type of series. Secondly, the characters in this series are not really interesting which is a very bad thing for a mystery series because mystery shows needs to be driven by many things, and the main thing is the impressive characters.

The main reason of this in my opinion is the fact that there is nothing special, the story is done before, the presumably twist is nothing new and the fact that the story is slow a bit didn't do a favor for this series.

If you have time give it a try, but from my point of view there are many other shows that deserves your time.

Starts well but runs out of brain

Just finished the English language version. Starts well, good cast, typical but credible murder mystery. Sadly many of these shows seem to be written without planning a proper ending so get lost in the woods. After a dozen red herrings it becomes obvious who dunnit. Why? There's only one person left! The ending is utterly ludicrous. Save your time by watching something better. The cast is excellent and do their very best to rescue this turkey from the mess it sinks to. You can actually see mike's in advance what's going to happen next. I feel sorry for the actors who have to wade through this bilge.

Solid enterntainment

Brits are pros at this - well-executed police procedurals. You can rely on them to have solid plotting and carefully planned dramatic arcs, capable actors, and three-dimensional characters with realistically grounded problems.

I enjoyed that the pacing wasn't rushed - however, the series could've been an hour shorter. (It annoys me that it appears "compulsory" nowadays to have at least 6 episodes for one story.) There were some unnecessary coincidences, and to be fair, all and all the series wasn't really that groundbreaking.

However, it was still a good binge with lovely Welsh scenery to boot.

bendigedig

I am writing this after s1 (hopefully, there will be more to come).

As a lover of the great but underrated Hinterland (Y Gwyll in Welsh), I am so pleased to see so many of the cast (13 in all) reapper here.

It has been produced in the same style, dark and brooding with two leading characters with a past and a lot of undelying tension.

I have seen quite a few welsh dramas but have to say I didn't know Elen Rhys as she only had small roles in Hinterland, Hidden and Keeping Faith but I will certainly be checking out her other work as i did enjoy her performance here, There's a great, reliable support cast here. I do like Hannah Daniel (looking like a Welsh Niamh Algar) in this role after being a bit let down with her in Keeping Faith and the ubiquitos Elery Thomas is here again, showing another string to her bow.

The only let down for me is the ending but hopefully this is just leading us into a second series.

Very good acting - well worth watching.

I have watched some BBC Wales dramas in the past and enjoyed them. Keeping Faith was one of them.

This one hooked me from the very beginning , watched first 3 episodes without a break.

Unlike a lot of dramas the characters are not cardboard cutouts , they all have a bit of depth and actually are quite realistic.

The story is quite good, plenty of twists and turns. At the end of the day it's very good solid entertainment. Occasionally there are some silly coincidences and some predictable occurrences. Still overall I enjoyed it, mainly due to the actors and the sense of realism.

This is good solid BBC drama which vis most enjoyable. Recommend watching it.

Good cast with a bad script.

It's very hard to carry a murder mystery over 6 episodes unless the script is great, and this script is far from it. In my experience Welsh crime dramas are glacially slow, it's a slow and painful process keeping up with them.

It is so full of cliches, like a bad American police procedural. A DI is brought back to her former station to work on a case similar to one she helped solve 10 years before. She teams up with her former colleague/lover. From there it's downhill full of cliches. Every new piece of evidence sends them down another rabbit hole. This isn't a "Grace" or a "Vera" or any of the top British crime dramas.

Great cast members like Richard Harrington and Elen Rhys deserve better scripts. This should have been 3 separate crime stories, 2 episodes each and it would have been more successful.

Great to Watch

Cleddau aka The One That Got Away is a Welsh Crime show that you should definitely not miss. The show is based on the so called "Heart Knot Murders" that took long time ago near Cleddau Woods. The murderer Harvey is in the prison but things change after a new body is found in the woods again. So the detectives DS Rick Sheldon (Richard Harrington) and DI Ffion Lloyd (Elen Rhys) start to look into the case to understand whether there is a copycat killer or they took the wrong guy (Harvey) to prison. There are major twists in the story and watch until the very last second of this show ! I think that this series should have a second season and it can be based on a different story line because the duo of Harrington and Lloyd are acting awesome. I give 8 over 10 to this show !

Ellen Rhys grabs my attention whenever she stars

And this series, streaming on AcornTV, is no exception. The story is about an old murder case, thought solved coming apart when the serial killings start up again.

Ellen plays DI Lloyd, one of the original detectives, called back to essentially redo the case. She was last seen on AcornTV in The Mallorca Files in a much more light-hearted role which I also enjoyed.

The question is what did they get wrong? And is the wrong man in jail all these 12 years? The story is further complicated because her former partner, now married, is also put on the case, despite their being involved last time around.

Normally I don't enjoy these relationship problems much, but with Ellen doing the acting, I found myself watching her depict what I recognized as real emotions and I had no problem staying glued to the TV.

The performances are all very good and I think most people will be entertained. But hats off especially to Ms. Rhys who is all star in my book.

Drop Rick Sheridan

The character DI Rick Sheldon is a liability for this show. He doesn't add anything, he's a pitiful character. The show needs to really-imagine him or drop him. Everyone else is solid. Not sure we could watch another season if Sheldon is still in it.

Absolute rubbish

The story line is pure fantasy, and the last episode (climax) is ridiculous. Nothing close to reality, so annoying that I wasted my time watching this rubbish. The story relating to the lost love was irritating and unnecessary. How can this be made and sold as a serious thriller. It reminded me of the cheap who done it nonsense that always seems to get aired on British television. Police do not say, "I think he did it", as was the case with this show. You need evidence and this is what makes good crime dramas interesting. Not this idiotic fantasy. My advice is to not watch this or anything that does not have at least a 7.5 IMDB rating.

As expected.

Like many BBC productions ir started strongly, slowed over the next few episodes and descended into predictsble garbage. Every few minutes I'm describing what's gou g to happen next, and I'm right. It's a boilerplate script cobbled together from every low level cop drama that the BBC has access to. I really wanted it to be good but I'm sorely disappointed. The romantic machinations are so obvious they're laughable. What a waste of licence money. After the first episode i struggled to keep going. Episode six was so corny I've taken a break and can't decide whether to bother with the rest. Porr show BBC.

It started badly, but then fell away

I think that title quote paraphrases the late Tommy Docherty, and sums up this whole aimless and pointless effort. Richard Harrington very rapidly used up his full stock of ten facial expressions, at least two of which are 'confused', and it was downhill all the way from there.

I really can't believe I watched this right through to the end, and I think it was only for the Welsh. My work took me to that nation for some years, long long ago, and I made an effort to acquire a basic smattering of the language, so I was interested to hear it spoken again. But of course the dialogue was way too fast for me, and I was totally reliant upon the subtitles.

And what did I see? A convoluted story with more plot holes than a Swiss cheese, and incompetence upon incompetence from the two central police officers. As for the ending, the very final shot, well no, NO, NOOOOO!

I should give it one, but for the small enjoyment I had trying to follow the Welsh, so a very generous three out of ten.

Now go away, Harrington boyo, and don't come back, OK?

from mallorca to a drab tiny british town

Max and Amanda were settled amongst the gorgeous scenery of Mallorca, with great chemistry amongst them, funky fun sidekicks, lots of interesting European diversity, and laughter have all been downgraded to your typical boring British mystery: This show reeks of British murder mystery tropes: two detectives with crappy background history, very creepy murder, combative home lives, typical diseases (alzeheimer, cancer and steroid) gumming up the works, and, of course, the dreary British weather. The comparisons are tragic.

I didn't recognize Amanda...she was a lovely competent British detective dealing with the dumb, albeit cute, German detective. They went out of their way to make her look so drab. And this show is drab as well. Too bad for the comparisons, I am not interested in continuing with the rest of this series.

No redeeming features

This series attempts to be dark and enigmatic equals dramatic, but only succeeds on the dark part of that equation. In the end it is merely a depressing expose of how the past can intrude on the present. All the twists and turns to the murder (most of which were obviously ploys for plot purposes only), all the supposed suspense, essentially is just to leave us uncomfortable and unsatisfied. Does every Welsh drama have to be so dark and nihilistic? Really? And why not let us watch it in Welsh, with subtitles. I would have preferred hearing the beautiful, musical, language rather than the plodding accents.
