‘Umjolo: Day Ones’ Netflix Review: A Disgusting Sequel To A Disgusting Movie
Image
Indian movies, especially after the ‘90s, have been lambasted and celebrated for setting unrealistic expectations when it comes to romance while distorting the very definition of love. Yes, Shah Rukh Khan is lauded for his romantic films, but one of his most popular ventures to date, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, glorified stalking and set a really bad precedent. Thalapathy Vijay’s hugely popular Kushi was chock-full of problematic stuff like navel-gazing and blatant sexism. Allu Arjun’s Aarya normalized the treatment of girls like they are trophies who are supposed to be won by men. After that, stuff like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Raja Rani, Arjun Reddy, and Animal gained popularity, and heterosexual romance sort of went into the gutter and has yet to see a positive resurgence. While I was here thinking that things were bad in terms of romantic dramas in India, South Africa came...

‘Umjolo: The Gone Girl’ Ending Explained & Summary: Does Lethu Break Up With Lucky?
Image
When you’re making a romcom about how society–the grannies, the friends, and basically anyone you meet–normalizes Black men cheating, whether or not you side with that argument, you run the risk of perpetuating this stereotype which is often a self-fulfilling prophecy. Until the very end, Fikile Mogodi’s South African romcom Umjolo: The Gone Girl, doesn’t make its stance clear on the matter that drives the narrative. And when Lethu’s emotional resolution arrives, we’re all cheering for her for having made the right choice, but it doesn’t stay for long enough to have any sort of thematic impact.

Spoiler Alert

What happens in the film?

Lethu and Lucky are seemingly couple-goals for everyone around them. They’re always affectionate, always together, and Lucky’s the most encouraging guy when it comes to pushing Lethu to achieve her goals. Lethu’s trying to make...

Umjolo: The Gone Girl (2024) Movie Review & Ending Explained: Does Lethu stay with Lucky?
Umjolo : Folle amoureuse (2024)
Umjolo: The Gone Girl (2024) is the silliest, non-committal derivation that just pretends to be a romcom but which has neither comic flair nor the tingling crackle of romantic tension. It’s a flat, purposeless and increasingly dull drama circling adultery and the lies bubbling in a supposedly perfect relationship.

Umjolo: The Gone Girl (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Umjolo: The Gone Girl circles several characters, whose lives crisscross. But there’s not much consequence or significance that threads them together. It’s more casual and thoughtless and prone only to bland romcom derivations.

It threads together narratives of infidelity and manipulation, covering it up as a force of habit that can’t be looked at with seriousness. There should be some leeway and scope for understanding. Some mistakes should be overlooked. That’s how the men in the film pitch their philandering to their enraged partners. There’s the obvious bitter...

Netflix’s New Releases Coming in November 2024
Image
A topical historical drama depicting the creation of IVF; a paranoid thriller series starring Colman Domingo; a bracingly original crime musical, and awards contender, from Jacques Audiard; the second part of the final season of Cobra Kai; and a reverential big-screen adaptation of a Pulitzer-winning August Wilson play are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in November.

On Nov. 7, action and mystery drama Outer Banks returns to Netflix. The first half of season four ended with several cliff-hangers for the Pogues, many of which should be resolved, to some degree, in the second half of the season. Over on Kildare Island, Rudy Pankow’s JJ probably gets the biggest bomb dropped on him when he learns that he’s not the son of his alcoholic and abusive father, Luke. The cast have promised “craziness” so expect some more jaw-dropping revelations.

In a big movie month for Netflix,...
