For actors, the word retirement is more or less a detour than a final destination. Terrence Howard bowed out of acting in 2022, only to quietly reappear in indie dramas. Cameron Diaz stepped away from Hollywood for nearly a decade before signing on to Netflix’s Back in Action. Jane Fonda famously left the industry in 1990, returning 15 years later. Even Clint Eastwood, who’s staged more than one “final” bow, keeps finding new projects. And now, after eight years away, one of the industry's most elusive figures, Daniel Day-Lewis, has dusted up his tools and is back, perhaps for one last hurrah.

Daniel Day-Lewis blamed his slow rhythm and style of working for delivering fewer films in his career, which is also why he probably has not done TV shows. The three-time Oscar winner announced his retirement from acting multiple times and was last seen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread eight years ago.
When asked about his slow output and his work style, Day-Lewis said that he learned pretty early on that his energy would be depleted if he took on more than he could chew, so he became choosy with his projects. He also said that he could not work on someone else’s timeline (via BBC).
A lot of other people just think I’m a lazy bum [he laughs]. You’re sweet to say that. I think the reason I don’t work more often – I have a slow rhythm, a slothful rhythm even. You can’t work to somebody else’s rhythm.

Daniel Day-Lewis officially retired after his final role in Phantom Thread (2017), marking nearly eight years away from acting. He made a rare exception to star in Anemone, especially because it’s a project led by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis.
A Unique Father-Son Creative Fusion
The film represents Ronan Day-Lewis’s feature directorial debut. Ronan, a visual artist who graduated from Yale, has exhibited his work internationally. Anemone is co-written by Daniel and Ronan, blending the elder Day-Lewis’s legendary screen presence with his son’s fresh creative vision.
Plot & Themes
Anemone is described as an emotionally gripping drama exploring fractured familial relationships, particularly between fathers, sons, and brothers. The story centers on a suburban man (Sean Bean) who ventures into Northern England’s woods to reconnect with his estranged brother (Daniel Day-Lewis), a hermit. Their relationship is shaped by long-buried personal and political trauma.

Daniel Day-Lewis is returning to the silver screen for his son’s directorial debut, titled Anemone, whose first look, featuring Sean Bean and Day-Lewis, has been unveiled. In 2024, the Oscar winner announced that he was officially ending his retirement run, which commenced ahead of Phantom Thread‘s release in 2017, as the actor later expressed that he felt compelled to stop acting.
However, with Ronan Day-Lewis’ upcoming movie, it appears Day-Lewis is making an exception, mainly due to personal reasons, it does opens the door for the long-speculated third movie from the duo of Scorsese and Day-Lewis.
Daniel Day-Lewis Leads Ronan Day-Lewis’s Directorial Debut, Anemone
With a cast featuring Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green, Daniel Day-Lewis, in Anemone, plays the estranged brother to Bean’s middle-aged man. The movie is said to be an exploration of familial bonds, especially the intricate relationship between fathers, brothers, and sons.

Focus Features has shared an image from Ronan Day-Lewis' feature directorial debut Anemone, starring Daniel Day-Lewis in his first role since retiring from acting eight years ago. The three-time Academy Award-winning actor co-wrote the film with his son, the director, who brought his father back to the screen following a lengthy hiatus after 2017's Phantom Thread. The two teaming up for the project is quite apt as the movie is described as a family drama that explores "the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons."
Day-Lewis looks quite different in the first-look photo of Anemone (shared below) compared to the last time he was seen onscreen as Reynolds Woodcock in Phantom Thread. Instead of wearing tailored suits and bow ties with his hair in a swept-back style, Anemone sees him sporting short gray hair, long sideburns, and a horseshoe mustache. An unexpected — and, frankly, quite charming — theme to this year’s New York Film Festival? Family. Specifically, creative families. Look no further than today’s latest lineup announcement, featuring the festival’s Spotlight slate, designed as a “selection of 12 significant and anticipated features.”
The most obvious significance? Filmmaking as family endeavor. Among the selections for this year’s Spotlight section: new works from Rebecca Miller (the five-part documentary “Mr. Scorsese”) and her son Ronan Day-Lewis (“Anemone”), the latter of which stars no less than Daniel Day-Lewis, who is, of course, husband to Miller and father to the younger Day-Lewis. Also on offer, the latest film from Ben Stiller, which is about his own iconic parents, Jerry Stiller and Anna Meara and is titled “Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost”.

The triple Oscar winner has retired from the profession twice – and returned twice. Ahead of Anemone, directed by his son Ronan, we gorge on Day-Lewis’s back catalogue
Perhaps keen not to be pigeonholed in high-fibre roles, Daniel Day-Lewis took on a pair of zany culture-clash comedies that featured him singing in a bubble bath. In Stars and Bars, he is a prim English art expert who travels to the American south to retrieve a Renoir from its owner (Harry Dean Stanton) and butts heads with various irksome oddballs. Playing the sort of nitwit that would become Hugh Grant’s meal-ticket, Day-Lewis proves that wackiness is not in his wheelhouse.

For Hollywood studios eyeing Oscar gold, deciding where to premiere a film is one of the season’s most crucial strategic choices. The right debut at the right festival can generate months of positive buzz; the wrong one can torpedo an awards campaign before it begins.
“It’s a calculated gamble every time,” says a studio executive who requested anonymity in discussing internal strategy. “You’re weighing the potential upside of a festival launch against the very real risk of an early critical rejection that follows you all season long.”
Premieres at festivals like Telluride, Venice or Toronto offer studios several key benefits. First, they provide crucial early momentum. Films that generate acclaim at top-tier events often carry that goodwill through months of campaigning, creating a sense of inevitability that can sway Academy voters.
Festivals also allow studios to test their films with critics, industry professionals and tastemakers whose endorsements shape early conversation.

We were disappointed when the Cannes lineup came out and Jim Jarmusch’s next film was not on it. But it seems like we just had to wait a little longer.
Efe Cakarel, the CEO of Mubi, which is distributing Jarmusch’s next movie, told a crowd at SXSW London that Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother” will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in the main competition.
“That’s already confirmed,” he said during a keynote speech at the festival on Friday (via Variety). He also added one other movie joining the lineup that Mubi will be releasing, Paolo Sorrentino’s next movie “La Grazia” starring Toni Servillo.
Venice won’t announce its lineup for some time, but it’s an exciting get for the festival and could be the first of several high profile contenders on the Biennale. Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine” from A24 has been rumored,...

It’s the final installment of beloved series turned film franchise “Downton Abbey.” Aptly titled “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” the third film debuted its trailer during CinemaCon, and is now sharing it with audiences everywhere. Julian Fellowes returns to write the installment, which is set in the same universe as his show “The Gilded Age.” Fellowes previously teased that the elusive plot of “The Grand Finale” is “emboldened” by the clock timer invention that takes place in “The Gilded Age.”
The logline for “The Grand Finale” reads: “The time has come to say goodbye to ‘Downton Abbey.’ Focus Features is bringing the beloved Crawley household to theaters for the final installment of the wildly successful franchise written by creator Julian Fellowes.”
The ensemble cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech,...

Seth Rogen used Apple TV+’s FYC showcase in Hollywood this week to make an audacious plea: coax three-time Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis out of semi-retirement for a cameo in Season 2 of “The Studio,” the streamer’s hit satire of modern moviemaking. “He’s the greatest living actor…his process is so specific that I think that would be interesting to explore on the show,” Rogen said, before addressing the actor directly: “Daniel, please consider a Zoom with us. We’ll pitch you a good idea!”
Apple renewed the ten-episode comedy last week after its March debut drew a 93 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a string of celebrity cameos from Martin Scorsese to Charlize Theron. Production is expected to start later this year for a 2026 launch.
Whether Day-Lewis, 68, is persuadable remains uncertain. The actor declared he was “no longer working as an actor” after 2017’s “Phantom Thread” but agreed...

Seth Rogen's hit series The Studio lampoons Hollywood with the help of many big-name guest stars brought in to play themselves. The series will be back for a second season, likely with many new exciting guests, but Rogen may have some trouble getting the one he wants most of all.
Per Variety, Rogen said how he's really hoping to get semi-retired actor Daniel Day-Lewis on The Studio. This is in part because Day-Lewis is the "greatest living actor" in the eyes of Rogen, though he's certainly not alone with that opinion. It may be a long shot to get Day-Lewis involved, as the Oscar-winning actor has largely stepped back from performing in recent years, but Rogen feels that he may be influenced to come on board if he hears the pitch they have in mind.

After Season 1’s critical success, Seth Rogen is eyeing an even bigger second season for The Studio. The Apple TV+ satirical comedy series shocked fans by featuring several huge cameos in each of its episodes. Now, Rogen seems to elevate the show to the next level, as he is inviting Daniel Day-Lewis to The Studio‘s Season 2.
Daniel Day-Lewis is widely named among the greatest actors of all time, with 3 Oscars under his belt. Although he retired from acting after starring in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread, the legend is now coming out of his retirement for his son’s directorial debut, Anemone, set to release this year.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is known for its surprising casting choices. Throughout its existence, the superhero franchise has shocked fans with its ambitious and bold casting, underscoring the MCU’s reputation for making bold and effective casting choices.
However, there has been a recent rumor going around claiming the legend Daniel Day-Lewis is being eyed to play Magneto in the franchise. While he is back from retirement for a short while, it seems a little far-fetched, even for Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, that they would be eyeing an actor like Ddl.

“Bugonia,” the latest collaboration between director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone, will premiere ahead of schedule.
The film will open in select theaters on Oct. 24 before expanding nationwide on Oct. 31. That’s slightly earlier than the original release date of Nov. 7. Cate Blanchett announced earlier this week that she is considering stepping away from acting. In a recent interview with Radio Times, the two-time Oscar winner revealed, “My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. While Blanchett has remained busy with high-profile projects — including Disclaimer for Apple TV+ and Jim Jarmusch’s upcoming film Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, c0starring Adam Driver — she sounded sincere about stepping away from the business. Fame, she admits, has never felt entirely natural.

Focus Features’ CinemaCon 2025 presentation was heavy on the auteurs, with the studio offering attendees a first look at two of the year’s most anticipated titles expected to debut on the European festival circuit: Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia” and Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme.”
“Bugonia” sees Lanthimos re-teaming with frequent collaborators Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons in predictably subversive fashion. A loose remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 sci-fi satire “Save the Green Planet,” the film stars Stone as a powerful pharmaceutical executive who is kidnapped by a conspiracy theorist (Plemons) who believes she is an alien. Lanthimos’ take on the project is written by “The Menu” scribe Will Tracy and produced by Ari Aster. With a November release date on the books, many expect the film to debut in Venice before launching an Oscar campaign.

Sean Bean has been tapped to star opposite Jack Patten in MGM+’s upcoming series Robin Hood.
From Lionsgate TV and showrunner John Glenn, Robin Hood is described as a sweeping, romantic adventure, a modern take of the classic tale that brings historical authenticity, psychological depth, and a heightened focus on the relationship between Rob and Marian.
In the series, following the Norman invasion of England, Rob (Patten) – a Saxon forester’s son – and Marian, the daughter of a Norman lord – fall in love and work together to fight for justice and freedom. As Rob rises as the leader of a band of rebel outlaws, Marian infiltrates the power at court, as both work together to thwart royal corruption and bring peace to the land.
Bean will play the Sheriff of Nottingham who is envisioned as a statesman, a strategist, and a builder of Nottingham itself. A loving father, a politician,...

Daniel Day-Lewis as Count Dracula? In another world, director Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" could've given us just that.
"Nosferatu" evokes images of silent movie actor Max Shreck in a bald cap and pointed ears as he played the vampire Count Orlok. But in Eggers' new "Nosferatu," Orlok actor Bill Skarsgård looks nothing like that — or himself, even.
Similar to Skarsgård's performance as Pennywise in "It," he totally submits himself over to the character, disappearing behind make-up and (in "Nosferatu") an echo effect on his voice. I agree wholeheartedly with /Film's Chris Evangelista that when you watch Skarsgård's Orlok, you don't feel as if you're seeing a performance, but a true evil walking on screen. In that way, it's the most fully inhabited villain performance I can recall since Heath Ledger's Joker in "The Dark Knight."
Now, this can all sound like a backhanded compliment, treating Skarsgård as a mere stand-in...

Brian Cox reflects on Daniel Day-Lewis' method acting and how it affected their 1997 movie. Daniel Day-Lewis' method acting is well-known, with the actor fully immersing himself in the roles he plays. This approach has resulted in numerous performances that garnered critical acclaim, leading to six Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, and three wins. He first won Best Actor for his performance as Christy Brown in the 1989 movie My Left Foot, in which he plays a man born with cerebral palsy who is only able to move his left foot.
Day-Lewis' other Academy Award wins are for playing oilman Daniel Planview in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 movie There Will Be Blood and as Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's 2012 biopic Lincoln. His last movie, Phantom Thread, in which he reunited with Anderson and received an Academy Award nomination, marked the final role before his retirement. However, Day-Lewis is coming out...
