Netflix is diving into supernatural horror with a brand-new series set in Newfoundland. Created by Jesse McKeown, known for his work on The Umbrella Academy and 19-2, the show promises eerie thrills mixed with a deep family drama.

This six-part limited series will take viewers to a small, isolated town on Canada’s Atlantic coast, where a terrifying sea creature begins to wreak havoc. At the heart of the story is a tough-as-nails fisherman, determined to protect his loved ones, his struggling community, and the way of life that’s slipping away.

Netflix has ordered a new six-part supernatural drama limited series set to be filmed in Newfoundland in Canada.

Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of the new limited series today with a quote from Netflix Canada’s content directors, Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury. They said, “Jesse’s bold, ambitious vision offers thrills galore, with the heart of a family drama. We can’t wait to transport our members to coastal Newfoundland with this timely story about community, resilience, and adaptability.”

Plot details are scarce, but the trades state that the series will be set in a remote town in Newfoundland, Canada’s easternmost province. That town is “terrorized by a mysterious sea creature, and a hard-bitten fisherman must fight to protect his family, his community, and his vanishing way of life.”

The series has yet to be titled but is being helmed by Jesse McKeown.

Netflix has greenlit an untitled supernatural creature series from Jesse McKeown, a veteran screenwriter on hit TV series like The Umbrella Academy and 19-2.

McKeown’s TV writing credits include The Big Charade, Robson Arms, Rogue, Republic of Doyle and DaVinci’s Inquest. The Canadian limited series will be set and be shot in Newfoundland, on the country’s Atlantic coast as the six-parter will center on a mysterious sea creature terrorizing a remote town, with a hard-bitten fisherman having to fight to protect his family, his community and his vanishing way of life.

Created by and starring Jared Keeso, the show is a spin-off of the popular series "Letterkenny." Set in Sudbury, Ontario, "Shoresy" follows the titular character, Shoresy Shore, as he takes on the challenge of turning around the struggling Sudbury Bulldogs hockey team. The show has been praised for its fast-paced plot and cohesive storytelling, as well as its authentic and strong portrayals of women and First Nations people.

The cast of Letterkenny spinoff Shoresy is sprinkled with some familiar charactersand here's where audiences might know their actors from. The Canadian comedy follows the titular character, Shoresy, as he joins a hapless Aaa hockey team, the struggling Sudbury Bulldogs, who are based in Northern Ontario. After 74 episodes, with seven specials, five live tours and branded merchandise and beverages, the final six-pack of episodes for the Canadian TV show Letterkenny aired on the Canadian streaming service Crave on December 25 and Hulu on December 26.

As it turns out, there were enough “Letterkenny Problems” not only to change the lives of all those involved, but to transform the Canadian TV landscape.

When “Letterkenny” cracks open its final six-pack of episodes Dec. 25 on the Canadian streaming service Crave (and on Dec. 26 on Hulu), it ends an era that includes 74 episodes, seven specials, five live tours, branded clothing and booze, Canadian Screen Awards victories, and a spinoff, “Shoresy,” which wraps filming on its third season in Sudbury, Ont. this month.

Adapting a beloved book series into a television show that doesn’t lose the author’s carefully crafted nuance is a tough job. Doing so while expanding upon that world and elevating the original work is an even more challenging task.

Yet “Three Pines” does both with aplomb.

“Three Pines” is based on Louise Penny’s award-winning mystery novels, which feature an array of quirky French Canadian locals who are constantly embroiled in another whodunnit.

Former Netflix Director of Original Series Carolyn Newman has joined John Morayniss’ fledgling Canadian production venture Blink Studios, with Transplant exec Virginia Rankin also signed as In-House Exec.

Newman starts next week as EVP, Global Scripted, joining from Will Packer Media where she has spent the past year heading up scripted TV and production, selling five shows in development to both streamers and broadcasters.

She is a former Netflix Director of Original Series, where she developed 17 original titles such as Clickbait, The Serpent and Echoes.

Based in LA and reporting to Morayniss, Newman will focus on development of scripted content, working closely with Toronto-based Rankin, whose focus will be on new and diverse voices in Canada and internationally. Rankin’s exec credits include CTV/NBC’s Transplant, CTV police drama 19-2 and Netflix’s Bad Blood.

Jim Gaffigan is preparing to play former Toronto mayor Rob Ford in a scripted series currently in the works at AMC, Variety has learned exclusively.

Jesse McKeown will write and executive produce, with Ed Helms and Mike Falbo executive producing under their Pacific Electric Picture Co. banner. Michael Dowse will executive produce and direct.

The dark comedy series would detail the rise and fall of the controversial Ford, who served as the mayor of Toronto from 2010 to 2014 after many years as a city councilor. He was infamously caught on video smoking crack cocaine during his reelection campaign and was known to suffer from other substance abuse issues.

Should the project move forward it would not be the first onscreen depiction of Ford. Damian Lewis played Ford in the film “Run This Town,” which debuted at SXSW last year.

Sienna Films, producer of Hulu's Cardinal, has been sold off as asset sales at Kew Media Group after it was tipped into receivership by the Ontario Superior Court.

Terms of the acquisition by Montreal-based Datsit Sphere, which produces series like Transplant, 19-2 and Rumours, were not disclosed.

Sienna Films, led by Jennifer Kawaja and Julia Sereny and acquired by Kew Media in 2017, also has such TV credits as Ransom for CBS and Trickster for CBC and Aptn.

Written by Corbin-Miller, H-Town is based on the Echo Media/Sphere Media Plus Canadian cop drama series 19-2. In the U.S. version, when two Houston detectives from opposing sides of a multi-generational family feud are paired as partners, they find themselves surprisingly drawn to each other even as they investigate a case that may have far-reaching ramifications for both their families.

An English-language 19-2 series aired on Canada’s Bravo and CTV for four seasons, from 2014-2017. The British — and others — are coming to Comcast. Acorn TV, a subscription video-on-demand service specializing in U.K. and international television, is now available to the cable giant’s Xfinity TV customers nationwide.

It’s the first pay-tv distribution deal for Rlj Entertainment’s Acorn TV, which offers a lineup of mysteries, dramas, and comedies previously unavailable to U.S. audiences. The advertising-free Svod service is available to Comcast subs for $4.99 monthly.

“The addition of Acorn TV and its curated collection of standout international television provides even more choice to our Xfinity TV customers, giving them another way to watch their favorite series or discover new and classic programs,” said Michael Imbesi, Comcast Cable’s VP of movies and pay-per-view programming.
