Netflix has been digging heavily into true-crime over the last few years and it’s seemingly paying off.
In the streamer’s latest data dump – its What We Watched engagement report – there are a slew of true-crime series including American Murder: Laci Peterson, Worst Ex Ever, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey and This Is the Zodiac Speaking entering its top ten with The Menendez Brothers doc leading the list.
The Menendez Brothers, the Alejandro Hartmann-directed doc, premiered after Ryan Murphy’s buzzy Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story series and scored 39.2M views.
American Murder: Laci Peterson topped the series list with 37.4M views. That series, which told the story of the murder of the American woman murdered by her husband while she was eight months pregnant. It is part of Netflix’s American Murder strand, which was just responsible for the Gabby Petito three-series that launched this month.

With so many documentaries about the rise and fall of Sean “Diddy” Combs released or in the works, producer Ari Mark initially didn’t think he would tackle the subject. But then he developed a relationship with Ariel Mitchell, the attorney representing several cases against the entertainment mogul and realized “there was a much more victim-forward approach” he could take. He also got in touch with a childhood friend who grew up in the same house as Combs.
“When we heard his perspective, it really clicked for us that this could be something more layered and unexpected — a raw exclusive look at Sean Combs long before he was Puff, long before he was Diddy,” Mark tells The Hollywood Reporter ahead of Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy‘s release. “We all have an origin story [and] we learned about his upbringing, we learned about him as an outcast, we learned about his bullying,...

David Fincher has a thing for serial killers. During his lengthy and successful career, the filmmaker has wowed audiences on both the big and small screen alike with titles including Seven and Mindhunter, respectively. In 2007, he brought a true story to cinemas everywhere and took on a decades-long unsolved case when he paired up with leading stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal on Zodiac. The feature centered around the titular killer who left chaos and uncertainty in his wake after committing a slew of murders in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late ‘60s. With the film focusing on one primary suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen, the plot could easily be seen as a serial killer thriller with the most likely perp at the center. However, that’s not how Fincher viewed it.

For the last 50 decades, the identity of the Zodiac Killer has remained one of the most puzzling cold cases in American true-crime culture. With countless suspects emerging and fading into obscurity, the serial killer struck terror throughout Northern California’s Bay Area in the late 1960s, inspiring countless podcasts, books, and even the 2007 Zodiac film starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, and Robert Downey Jr.
For those who are unaware of the cold killer, the Zodiac Killer is an unidentified serial murderer who terrorized Northern California. He is infamous for his cryptic letters, taunting authorities with symbols, ciphers, and claims of several unsolved murders. The Zodiac Killer also claimed to have killed 37 people, but only five murders and two attempted murders have been linked to him. Despite extensive investigations, the Zodiac Killer’s identity remains a mystery, except, for Arthur Leigh Allen, a former elementary school teacher and convicted sex offender,...

Whether it's Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, The John Wayne Gacy Tapes, or The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes, Netflix has been providing at-home crime investigators with a satisfying amount of shocking true-crime documentaries. Exploring the background of the notorious killers, the details of their utterly disturbing crimes, and the daunting consequences that followed in great detail, the true-crime genre continues to glue viewers to the screen and invites them to put on their investigator glasses.
While there are many aspects that make this type of documentary so addicting, its easy to establish what the most exciting part about true-crime documentaries is: examining the evidence. Its common sense that looking into the evidence that ties a suspect to a crime is an essential part of true-crime documentaries, but This Is the Zodiac Speaking evidently didnt get the memo.

The run-up to Halloween is peak spooky season, and this week’s Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report proves that streaming audiences are flocking to scary fare. Yet despite an influx of horror flicks, thrillers, and serial killer content, none of it can scare “The Penguin” out of the top spot.

Now, let’s count the creepies. “Woman of the Hour,” in second place again this week, tells the how-can-this-be-real-life story of serial killer Rodney Alcala appearing as a contestant on “The Dating Game” in the 1970s. The crime drama continues to be a popular sub-genre that captivates audiences, often featuring highly flawed characters and street-level stakes. This year, Apple TV+'s Presumed Innocent is one of the biggest breakout crime dramas, in addition to Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The latter speaks to a further sub-genre of this sub-genre, which is crime dramas based on true stories.
In recent years, the true-crime TV sub-genre has seen popular titles like Mindhunter, The Staircase, Unbelievable, The Dropout, Hulu's Under the Bridge, and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. These shows often feature impressive casts, and they frequently become major streaming hits. Netflix, in particular, has become a go-to destination for these types of shows, which vary from truly chilling to more comedic.

Netflix's new documentary This is the Zodiac Speaking revisits the mysterious case of the Zodiac killer, who terrorized the Californian coastline in the 1960s and 1970s. Featuring the Seawater family, who intimately knew the police's chief suspect, Arthur Leigh Allen, the film squarely concludes that Allen was indeed the man known as the Zodiac. The murders were made all the more intriguing by the Zodiac's use of letters and ciphers, per ciphermysteries.com, which he sent to the police and the media, teasing and taunting them to discover him.
This is the Zodiac Speaking presents new evidence that implicates Allen, the Seawater children's teacher and family friend. David, Don, and Connie Seawater saw Allen as a father figure who took them on sailing and race trips, some of which they later recognized as corresponding with the sites of Zodiac-related murders and attacks.

As explored in Netflix's This Is the Zodiac Speaking, the Zodiac Killer has remained an enigma, captivating true-crime enthusiasts and investigators alike. Active in Northern California during the late 1960s, the Zodiac is believed to be responsible for at least five confirmed homicides, though some speculate the actual number could be much higher. The killer's chilling ability to elude law enforcement and his penchant for taunting authorities through cryptic letters only added to the fear he instilled in the Bay Area community.
As the mystery deepened, numerous Zodiac suspects emerged, yet none have definitively been proven guilty, leaving families and investigators searching for answers. The release of Netflixs documentary has reignited interest in one of the most infamous suspects, Arthur Leigh Allen. At the moment, both of Netflix's #1 trending titles, This Is The Zodiac Speaking and Woman Of The Hour, are in the true crime genre, which highlights the specific kinds of crime stories audiences are currently interested in. “This is the Zodiac Speaking” (2024) docuseries explores the most famous “unsolved” serial killer case in history. The Zodiac killer was notorious for having murdered five victims in the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s. He would send in messages as ciphers to regional newspapers, where he would threaten with a murder spree or bombings if they wouldn’t be printed. To this day, The Zodiac Killer case remains an open investigation, with at least two of the ciphers still remaining unsolved and the latest cipher to be decoded was as late as 2020.

Netflix's explosive new documentary This is The Zodiac Speaking reveals previously unknown evidence surrounding the man police have long suspected to be the murderer, Arthur Leigh Allen. Allen's untimely death in 1992, at the age of 58, appeared to put an end to the case, with the killer's identity unsolved. The Zodiac Killer had seven confirmed killings between 1969 and 1974 in the era of serial killers. Still, he is a unique figure in American crime for the letters he sent to police and the media after each killing. The Zodiac Killer's letters contained ciphers full of astrological symbols, which, he insisted, would expose him if solved.
Throughout the 1970s, and until his death, Allen was the police's only named suspect for the Zodiac Killer murders; they connected Allen to the killings through largely circumstantial evidence and a tenuous link to the first victim,...

Netflix's This Is The Zodiac Speaking revisits the enigmatic serial murderer who was prolific in the late 1960s, adopting the self-styled moniker of "the Zodiac." 65 years after the gruesome killings, the perpetrator remains unidentified, making the Zodiac case, as suggested by The Guardian, one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in the history of American crime. The fact that the killer taunted the police, the media, and the public with a series of letters and cryptic ciphers, challenging the authorities to identify him, only added to his image.
To this day, no one knows the full extent of the Zodiac's crimes in his letters, he claimed 37 murders, but only seven have been confirmed (via San Francisco Chronicle). However, the failure to catch the Zodiac was less mystery than dumb luck, institutional incompetence, a plethora of unlikely suspects, and a...

Arthur Leigh Allen is a familiar name among amateur investigators who delve into the darker side of humanity. In this case, his name is frequently associated with one of the most notorious serial killers in U.S. History — the Zodiac.
In the grand scheme of things, the Zodiac Killer is small potatoes, outdone by the likes of Gary Ridgeway, Gerald Stano, Ted Bundy, and Dennis Rader, at least in terms of victims.
The only difference is, the Zodiac was never apprehended. All that remains of the Zodiac’s rampage between December 1968 and October 1969 is theory, circumstantial evidence, and innuendo.

Americans are fascinated by serial killers and even more fascinated by the unknowns associated with them. Whether that’s a healthy obsession or not is a topic for another day.

Exclusive: Alysia Russo, who was Head of Docuseries at Amazon MGM Studios, is moving to Netflix.
It marks a rare senior executive moving directly between two rival studios.
Russo is understood to be working on feature docs at Netflix. While there are two executives from this team on maternity leave, Russo’s role is unrelated and is a temporary contract, thought to be 18 months.
Russo was behind Amazon docuseries such as LulaRich and its upcoming Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story, which comes from the producers of ID’s Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.
Her move comes less than four months after a restructure within Amazon MGM Studios.
In May, Russo’s boss Lauren Anderson, who was Head of AVOD Programming and Studios Unscripted across U.S. Prime Video and Amazon Freevee, was named Head, Brand and Content Innovation, but continuing to oversee the AVOD originals team.
