A soundie was a short video (three minutes in length), that was played on a device called the Mills Panaram. From 1940 through 1946, you could find them in bars, night clubs, and similar locations. Drop in a dime and you got a film from a loop of ten. Mills and other produced turned out more than two thousand of them. Typically they were replaced weekly.
As for the Delta Rhythm Boys, they formed in 1934 as a college group. They were very successful, as you can tell from this lively soundie. In 1954 they resettled permanently in Europe. In 1987, Lee Gaines, one of the two surviving original members, died, and that was an end to the group.
