Untold: The Murder of Air McNair Review – An Unfulfilled Promise
Image
Steve McNair was loved by many in Nashville. A star quarterback who led big plays on the field, he became renowned for his arm strength, poise under pressure, and deep pride in his Tennessee Titans team. Away from sports, he remained approachable, down to earth. And yet on one summer day in 2009, McNair’s life was cut short in shocking tragedy, leading to a mystery that still holds grip.

The Netflix documentary “Untold: The Murder of Air McNair” seeks answers to this sad puzzle. Through interviews and archival footage, we learn of McNair’s rise from college record-setter at Alcorn State to NFL great guiding the then-Houston Oilers, later Titans franchise’s exciting run to the Super Bowl in 1999 against the legendary “Greatest Show on Turf.” We also see police puzzling over McNair’s death, found shot in a condo alongside his girlfriend. Who was responsible, and why?

Luminate Streaming Ratings: ‘The Accident’ and ‘The Union’ Lead TV and Film Charts August 23-29
Image
“The Accident” and “The Union” were the most-watched streaming originals in the U.S. by far during the week of Aug. 23-29, per Luminate.

“The Accident” led TV titles with 782 million minutes watched throughout the window, which marked its first full week of availability, while “The Union” was the top movie and top title overall, hitting 813.5 million minutes watched. Aug. 23-29 marked the Halle Berry-Mark Wahlberg film’s second full week of availability on the chart; it was No. 1 with 1.7 billion minutes watched on the previous chart.

The second-most-watched title on the TV chart was “Wyatt Earp and the Cowboy War,” which hit 500.2 million minutes watched in its first full week of streaming. “American Murder: Laci Peterson” had its second week on the chart, dropping to third place with 446.9 million minutes watched after its No. 1, billion-minute debut the week before.

‘Inside Out 2’ Costs $24.99 to Watch at Home, Where It Went Straight to #1
Image
“Inside Out 2” (Disney), the biggest domestic movie since “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022, finally arrived at home. Released in theaters June 10, it still ranked #10 at the box office last weekend — which is probably why it could debut with a $24.99 three-day rental and take first place at both iTunes (which ranks by transactions) and Fandango (ranking by revenue).

This week Netflix had three of its own original films among the top four, led by “The Union” starring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry. The secret agent comedy-thriller is #1 for the second week, uncommon among Netflix Originals.

VOD charts also saw Neon’s low-budget sleeper success “Longlegs” place third at both sites. This came after six weeks of strong theatrical success, with $73 million so far.

Unusually, iTunes and Fandango shared the same top four films. “Twisters” (Universal), last week’s #1, is second at both, while “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) is fourth.

Image
Before starring in his third Knives Out movie next year, Daniel Craig has another film that's dominating streaming charts. Logan Lucky, the 2017 heist comedy starring Craig, Adam Driver, and Jim O'Heir, is currently the #6 most popular movie on Netflix. Logan Lucky narrowly beats out The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the first Minions film, while falling just short of The Emoji Movie and the recently added sports documentary, Untold: The Murder of Air McNair. In addition to Craig, Driver, and O'Heir, Logan Lucky also stars Channing Tatum, Riley Keough, and Katie Holmes, and the film boasts an incredibly impressive 92% rating from critics along with a 76% score from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.
