Quiet Life Review: A Restrained Yet Resonant Portrayal
Image
In his latest film Quiet Life, director Alexandros Avranas takes on a challenging issue that few are aware of—child resignation syndrome. The movie first screened at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, where audiences were introduced to a family’s struggle against all odds.

Sergei, Natalia, and their daughters have fled their home in Russia, seeking asylum in Sweden to escape danger. There they eagerly learn the language and immerse themselves in their new community while waiting for a decision on their application. But faced with rejection, despair sets in.

Their younger daughter Katja suddenly falls ill with resignation syndrome, a condition where trauma causes children to withdraw completely into an unresponsive state. As Katja’s health declines and hopes of appealing the decision vanish, the family is thrust deeper into uncertainty.

Avranas does not shy away from depicting the bleak realities they confront—from indifferent bureaucracy to a clinic that...

Ghosts of Germany’s Past Evoked in Venice Films ‘Riefenstahl,’ ‘September 5’
Image
Andres Veiel’s documentary “Riefenstahl,” which challenges the carefully crafted public persona of one of Germany’s most controversial directors, who was forever tainted by working with the Nazis, is one of 17 German films playing in the various sections of the Venice Film Festival.

A deep dive into Leni Reifenstahl’s previously inaccessible archive, the 160-minute film lifts the lid on secrets the director of the 1935 Nuremberg propaganda film “Triumph of the Will” struggled more than half her life to keep hidden.

Veiel, who was brought onboard to direct by producer Sandra Maischberger of Berlin’s Vincent Films – who had gained unfettered access to Riefenstahl’s archive after the death of her longtime companion and husband Horst Kette in 2016 – is untroubled by the film’s out-of-competition berth as he believes the festival is the right venue for its first showing.

“For me, it is the right festival for the film,...

Do You Know Where You’re Going To?: Avranas Analyzes Syndrome of a New Century

For his fifth narrative feature, Quiet Life, Greek Weird Wave alum Alexandros Avranas once again steps out of his native country to explore a culturally specific trauma phenomenon. The thrust of the narrative presents a scenario so maddening it seems to take place in a dystopic parallel universe as it examines the plight of Russian parents seeking political asylum in Sweden with their two young daughters in tow. The arduous experience triggers a medical condition recognized in Sweden (at least as a novel diagnostic entry as of 2014) called Child Resignation Syndrome, where emotional trauma specific to asylum seekers from former Soviet and Yugoslav countries causes an indefinite comatose state.…...

Exclusive Clip: The Kids Aren’t All Right in Alexandros Avranas ‘Quiet Life’
Image
After winning the Silver Lion for Best Director with Miss Violence (2013), Greek filmmaker Alexandros Avranas returns to the Lido in the Orizzonti section with his latest work. This time, the focus is on a Russian family exiled to Sweden, where one might assume the biggest challenges would be adapting to the language, food, culture, and peculiar pop music. However, their true ordeal is only beginning. Known for his sharp exploration of human psychology intertwined with social issues, Avranas once again puts the family unit to the test. In his fifth feature, Quiet Life, parents Sergei and Natalia face the devastating aftermath of their asylum application being denied, which shakes their family to its core—especially when their youngest daughter, Katia, collapses into a mysterious coma.…...
