‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ – Helen Shivers and a Truly Iconic Chase Scene in Slasher History
Image
Freddie Prinze Jr. made a bold claim during the premiere of the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. On Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Helen Shivers death scene, he gushed: “I genuinely mean this: I think it’s one of the best death scenes in the history of horror films.” While her actual death scene appears mostly offscreen, behind a wall of rubber tires, I would argue that he likely meant her chase scene. It remains the most heart-pounding and all-time best chase scene in slasher history, outpacing the likes of Laurie Strode in Halloween and Sally Hardesty in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Chase scenes are as old as movies themselves. The first horror movie, 1896’s The Haunted Castle, features rudimentary scares and mechanics that would later become integral pieces to horror movies of the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, from Nosferatu to Dracula and Frankenstein. 1942’s Cat People...

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Ending Explained – Shocking Reveals & Post-Credits Surprises
Image
The latest legacy sequel to a ‘90s slasher classic may hit many familiar notes, but its final act sets up some truly ambitious surprises that will shock franchise fans

Warning: This feature has Heavy Spoilers for 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer.

It’s been 27 years since an I Know What You Did Last Summer film was in theaters. The horror landscape has significantly evolved since the late ‘90s, yet there’s been more and more of a push to return to the nostalgic creature comforts of the past. Legacy sequels have become the new normal and the past decade has featured follow-ups to Halloween, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Candyman, and even The Exorcist. This practice has become increasingly normalized to the point that a legacy sequel to 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer makes perfect sense, especially during a time where Scream’s own...

All 4 I Know What You Did Last Summer Movies, Ranked
Image
He might not have as much of a legacy as Ghostface, but the hook-wielding Ben Willis left a mark in the surge of '90s slasher movies when he told a group of irresponsible teens, "I Know What You Did Last Summer." Cutting into the competition of masked killers in 1997, the film helped boost the careers of stars like Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe.

The horror franchise returned this year with a legacy sequel that (in keeping with the legacy sequel title trend) is also simply called "I Know What You Did Last Summer"). Hewitt and Prinze reprise their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, and a new group of teens are forced to confront past mistakes that turn a hit-and-run into a horrifying killing spree.

Incredibly, this is the fourth movie in a series that has spanned almost three decades. There have been highs and lows,...

Ranking the outfits of slasher movie killers by style and effort
Image
With the I Know What You Did Last Summer remake in cinemas, a tongue-in-cheek look at how much effort slasher killers put into their outfits – with a trophy for first place.

There’s an episode of Peppa Pig where all the parents completely forget to make a Halloween costume for their offspring, and so numerous little cartoon animals show up to a spook-themed party dressed almost identically. With a few winds of toilet roll, you have the ultimate low-effort outfit: an instant Egyptian mummy.

It’s a sad fact that many of horror cinema’s most prolific slasher killers are similarly slapdash in their clothing choices. They may have their victims fleeing in terror, but their sartorial efforts often begin and end with shoving on a mask.

There are other fictional murderers, however, that actually put some time and effort into their costumes; some are even downright flamboyant.

So with clothing in mind,...

The Fisherman slashes back into theaters on July 18, 2025.

In this summer’s legacy sequel, “When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.”

New ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Image Teases “More Brutal” Fisherman
Image
A new image from I Know What You Did Last Summer, courtesy of Collider, teases the horrors inflicted in the slasher.

“This time, The Fisherman is a lot more brutal,” director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) tells the outlet.

“When Sony came to me and asked if I would be interested in taking on this IP, I said I would love to do this, but there are two things I would need you to let me do if we’re going to make this sequel together. They agreed to both. You’ll just have to see what those things are on July 18.”

Although Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprise their roles from the 1997 original, Robinson confirmed that Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s Helen Shivers will not return. “Unfortunately, Sarah made it very clear she is dead. I asked many, many times. She is extremely dead.”

Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies...
