Exclusive: French film industry veteran Nicolas Royer, who was line and executive producer on Coralie Fargeat’s Cannes buzz title The Substance, has boarded Catherine Hardwicke’s upcoming feature A French Pursuit, starring Toni Collette.

The production, which is remake of Caroline Vignal’s 2020 French hit My Donkey, My Lover & I (Antoinette Dans Les Cévennes), starring Laura Calamy, is due to shoot in the Cévennes region in south-central France this summer.

Royer will line and executive produce the movie, which is lead produced by Christopher Simon at New Sparta Productions and Collette under her Vocab Films banner.

The new production will be first official gig for Royer’s company Voulez-Vous Production Services, which he created in 2023 to build on his work on The Substance.

Royer was line and executive producer on the body horror, lead produced by the UK’s Working Title and starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid.

Club Zero is a disturbing satire with big ideas that co-exist despite their contradictions. Mia Wasikowska delivers a haunting performance as Ms. Novak, sparking deep dives into important societal and personal questions. Jessica Hausner's direction is fantastic, with a sparse score and very specific cinematography adding to the Brechtian distancing of the film.

Most films will spoon-feed you their plot, themes, and message. Club Zero won't feed you anything, but the cold metal spoon is fantastic. It's a film that may frustrate many people who prefer avoiding cognitive dissonance of any kind, a film where everyone is right and everyone is wrong at the same time. Then again, people of certain ideological persuasions could easily manipulate the narrative to suit their particular aims. If you give yourself over to it, though, Club Zero dismantles the easy comfort of ideology to reveal the confusing, difficult questions of our time.

French production powerhouse Newen Studios has acquired Vanessa Djian’s Paris-based Daï-Daï Films, the latest addition to its growing group of European production labels.

Since its launch in 2017, Daï-Daï Films has co-produced several ambitious French and international projects including Fred Cavaye’s Farewell, Mr. Haffmann alongside Vendôme Pictures and Pathé, and Alexis Michalik’s Cyrano My Love.

Newen Studios is the production subsidiary of French media giant TF1 group and houses more than 40 labels.

The distinction isn’t always reserved for brand new faces; rather, we’ve selected people who are branching out, or who find themselves in waters where they are liable to make waves. French director, writer and producer Cédric Jimenez is known for his gritty crime thrillers inspired by real-life stories involving specific police departments. They include 2014 Toronto Film Festival debut The Connection (La French) about magistrate Pierre Michel, who waged an obsessive six-year battle to bring down Marseille’s infamous ‘French Connection’ drug ring; and last year’s box office hit The Stronghold (Bac nord), based on a 2012 police corruption case, also in Marseille.

Hot French helmer Cedric Jimenez, whose latest hit movie “The Stronghold” is nominated for seven Cesar awards, is developing “Verde,” an epic adventure drama revolving around the kidnapping of former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and her campaign manager Clara Rojas, who were held captive in the jungle for seven years.

Inspired by a true story like all of Jimenez’s films, “Verde” opens in 2002, when Betancourt — a high-profile French-Colombian senator who was running for president and had vowed to end political corruption — was brutally kidnapped with her campaign manager, Rojas, by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc). The pair were held hostage by the rebel group in the hostile jungle for nearly a decade, along with many other victims of Colombia’s civil war.

Netflix has swooped on worldwide rights to Cédric Jimenez’s French crime thriller The Stronghold from Studiocanal, ahead of its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

The deal with the streaming giant excludes France, where Studiocanal will release the film theatrically under its original title Bac Nord on August 18. It is set to world premiere out of competition at Cannes on Monday (July 12) and Netflix plan to release the feature on its platform this autumn.

Cedric Jimenez, the French director of “The Connection,” the Rosamund Pike-starrer “HHhH” and “Bac Nord,” will next be directing “November,” an action-packed thriller set against the backdrop of the Paris terror attacks of 2015 with a prestigious cast led by Oscar-winning Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”), Anais Demoustier (“Alice and The Mayor”) and Sandrine Kiberlain (“In Safe Hands”).

Written by Olivier Demangel, the screenwriter of Mati Diop’s “Atlantics,” “November” unfolds during the five days following the attacks which shook Paris, and revolves around the sprawling investigation carried on by a highly-secretive police brigade called Sdat (anti-terrorist sub-directorate) to track down the terrorists – including the two masterminds — behind the attacks.

Budgeted at $20 million, “November” is produced by Hugo Selignac at Chi-Fou-Mi Films, who had teamed with Jimenez on “Bac Nord,” and Mathias Rubin at Recifilms. Studiocanal is co-producing and is handling French distribution, as well as international sales on the film,...

“The Seventh Function of Language,” a novel by French author Laurent Binet, is getting the feature film treatment. Uri Singer, the CEO of TaleFlick, a production company that specializes in adapting books into movies and TV shows, has obtained screen rights to the popular work of fiction.

Singer will produce “The Seventh Function of Language” with Midnight Road Entertainment’s Vincent Sieber, who previously produced “The Chronicles of Narnia.”

The New York Times described Binet’s novel as being “at once a buddy-cop plot, a fish-out-of-water comedy and a spy thriller.” A whodunit set against the backdrop of 1980s France, “The Seventh Function of Language” centers on a literary critic Roland Barthes, who gets hit by a laundry van and dies after having lunch with the presidential candidate François Mitterand. But as the world mourns his death, one question arises: What if it wasn’t an accident at all?

Range Media Partners, a new management firm staffed with veteran Hollywood agents, has announced a slew of filmmaker signings.

Tim Van Patten, the Emmy Award-winning director, writer and creator behind shows like “The Sopranos,” “Boardwalk Empire” and the recent HBO hit “Perry Mason,” has joined the firm.

Van Patten is joined by Swedish-born Niclas Larsson, an award-winning commercial director and writer who also helmed the whimsical two-part Vogue series “The Magic Diner,” featuring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Anna Wintour.

Ricky Staub and Dan Walser, the creative team behind “Concrete Cowboy,” are also on board. The official TIFF selection stars Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin, and was purchased by Netflix following its festival premiere. The pair operate through their production company Neighborhood Films, which counts an apprenticeship program that recruits the formerly incarcerated to help them develop a versatile skill set that they can parlay into future opportunities.

Historical reimagining to shoot in South America, Europe.

Mediawan-owned Païva Studio and Mediawan Rights have acquired adaptation rights to Laurent Binet’s novel Civilizations and are partnering with Los Angeles-based Anonymous Content to produce the series.

The property will be shot in South America and Europe in several languages and is being set up as a major international production.

Binet’s bestseller imagines an alternate reality in which the Incas prevail over the Conquistadors, Christopher Columbus never reaches America, and Incan leader Atahualpa invades Europe.

In reality Atahualpa, the last of the Incan rulers, was executed by Spanish forces in the early 16th century.

Hollywood super-indie banner Anonymous Content is partnering with Païva Studio, a production label owned by French media group Mediawan, on “Civilizations,” an ambitious series based on Laurent Binet’s (“HHhH”) bestselling novel.

The epic series, set to be shot in South America and Europe in several languages, delivers a plausible rewriting of global history in which Christopher Columbus never discovered America and the Incas came to Europe.

Paiva Studio and Mediawan Rights, the commercial arm of the group, have acquired the adaptation rights to “Civilizations” which was published in August 2019 in French and was awarded the prestigious “Grand Prix du Roman” 2019 by the Académie Française. The translation rights for “Civilizations” have already been acquired for 16 languages. Binet’s (pictured) most famous novel is “HHhH” which was translated into 34 languages and adapted for the big screen in 2017 by Cédric Jimenez, with a cast headlined by Jason Clarke and Rosamund Pike.

Studiocanal has come on board “Bac Nord” from Cedric Jimenez (“The Man With the Iron Heart”), a French crime thriller with Gilles Lellouche set in the dangerous northern neighborhoods of Marseille.

The movie reteams Studiocanal with Hugo Sélignac and Vincent Mazel at Chi-Fou-Mi Productions, the Paris-based company behind the Cesar-nominated “Sink or Swim,” one of France’s highest-grossing local movies in 2018, and “In Safe Hands,” both of which were handled by Studiocanal.

“‘Bac Nord’ marks our fifth collaboration with Hugo Selignac, a talented and ambitious French producer,” said Nicolas Dumont, Studiocanal’s exec VP of French production, theatrical distribution and home entertainment. Dumont cited Lellouche’s “Sink or Swim,” Jeanne Herry’s “In Safe Hands,” Francois Damiens’s “Mon Ket” and Romain Gavras’ “The World Is Yours.”

Thomas M. Wright cheerfully acknowledges he is far better known in the Us and the UK than in his native Australia.

That’s because the character actor, who made his feature writing and directing debut on Acute Misfortune, has worked predominantly in international TV series and movies in the past six years.

Wright flies to Quebec next month for his next acting gig, a recurring role in Barskins, a National Geographic drama series based on the Annie Proulx novel about a group of outcasts living in New France — the part of North America controlled by the French — in the 16th century.

That will be his third Us series following Wgn America’s Outsiders and FX network’s The Bridge, and his first acting gig since he played racist station owner Mick Kennedy in Warwick Thornton’s Sweet Country.

“Gone Girl” was treated rather harshly at the 2015 Academy Awards. Despite being of the most popular and well-reviewed films of the year, David Fincher‘s movie came away with just one Oscar nomination: Best Actress for Rosamund Pike. But the recent announcement of Roman Polanski’s new movie offers proof that, even after the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the birth of the #MeToo movement, the controversial director can still muster support – at least, in places where #MeToo has been slow to take hold.

Mia Hansen-Løve’s English-language debut, “Bergman Island,” has just added some very compelling inhabitants. ScreenDaily reports that Greta Gerwig, Mia Wasikowska and John Turturro have all signed on for one of the busy French filmmaker’s next features, set on the Swedish island of Faro.

As the outlet details, “The picture revolves around an American filmmaking couple who retreat to the island for the summer to each write screenplays for their upcoming films in an act of pilgrimage to the place that inspired Bergman. As the summer and their screenplays advance, the lines between reality and fiction start to blur against the backdrop of the Island’s wild landscape.”

There is no word yet on who will be playing each character in the feature.

If you like your time travel thrillers with a side of memory loss and taser fights, Kenneth Mader’s “Displacement” is the film for you.

The feature follows a young physics student who sets out to reverse a fatal quantum time anomaly that causes short-term lapses in memory and time slips. Oh, and on top of that, she’s also trying to solve the murder of her boyfriend. Just a totally normal day, right?

After his Jean Dujardin-led crime thriller The Connection served as a break-out, director Cédric Jimenez is back with a higher-profile follow-up with quite the ensemble. Led by Jason Clarke, Rosamund Pike, Jack O’Connell, Jack Reynor, and Mia Wasikowska, The Man with the Iron Heart is a World War II thriller and the first trailer has arrived.

Hailing from France, where it’s using the unfortunate original title of HHhH when it arrives this summer, the first trailer shows the story already captured in last year’s Anthropoid, following two young recruits who set out to kill a top Nazi leader. While it doesn’t look to reinvent the genre, the preview sells an intense-looking thriller with a strong cast.

"Promise me you'll get out alive." An international trailer has debuted for a WWII thriller titled HHhH, or also The Man With The Iron Heart, since no one really knows what HHhH means. The film tells the story of the assassination plot of Reinhard Heydrich in Prague, in May, 1942, when the Third Reich is at the peak of its power. This is the same mission known as "Anthropoid" that the other film titled Anthropoid is based on - they are the same exact stories, different films. World War II’s Operation Anthropoid has always seemed to be tailor-made for the cinema. Not only is ‘anthropoid’ a really cool sounding word, but a mission to assassinate a high-ranking Nazi that concludes with just lobbing an anti-tank grenade at his car sounds intrinsically awesome. And so we come to HHhH, the English-language debut of French director Cédric Jimenez which dramatizes the mission and whose international trailer has just been released.

Starring Jack O’Connell, Jack Raynor, Rosamund Pike, Jason Clarke and Mia Wasikowska, this preview makes the film look like a slightly less stylized Inglourious Basterds, featuring an exciting looking church-based firefight, lots of behind-the-scenes Nazi villainy, and oodles of apocalyptic fascist speech-making. As far as Naziploitation films go it doesn’t look half bad, though it’s hamstrung by what is, in my opinion, one of the worst titles for a movie I’ve ever seen. Operation Anthropoid, in which a team of Czechoslovak British-trained paratroopers assassinated Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich during World War II, has been Hollywood movie bait dating back to the 1940s. The story was last depicted on the big screen as recently as 2016, when Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan starred in “Anthrophoid,” but it looks like we’ll be getting another version of the story in the coming months.

Not in Orlando for this year’s Star Wars Celebration? Not to worry (worry you must not?), as the full panel for this morning’s heavily anticipated “The Last Jedi” panel will be streaming live for your viewing pleasure. The panel kicks off at 11 Am Et, and is slated to run until 12:30 Pm Et.

As is typical with most Celebration offerings, full details of the panel have been kept tightly under wraps — though we do know that director Rian Johnson (who was also in the audience during Thursday’s 40 Years of “Star Wars” panel) and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy will be joined by surprise guests during a 90-minute panel we can only hope offers up plenty of footage from the next chapter in the space saga.

One thing we’d be shocked not to see?...

Next week, the Cannes Film Festival lineup will be unveiled, and there are many ways cinephiles have been predicting which films might hit the Croisette. Sometimes, it’s a simple matter of knowing which auteur has a big new project in the can, but other times, it’s worth paying attention to the release schedule of French distributors because sometimes films coming out in May or June manage to nab a slot or two. So, perhaps we’ll be seeing “HHhH” walking the red carpet.

Two months ago, Deadline reported that NBCUniversal International Studios was planning to adapt feature film Hanna into a TV show with help from The Night Manager writer David Farr, who also co-wrote the script for the Hanna movie.

Now, Pathé and director Andrew Haigh will make a biopic of McQueen starring actor Jack O’Connell. Company is coming to visit Helen Mirren's character in the upcoming haunted house movie Winchester, as CBS Films announced that Jason Clarke has joined the cast as a psychiatrist who gets a lot more than he bargained for when he's sent to the haunted Winchester mansion to check on Sarah Winchester's (Helen Mirren) mental well-being.

Directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig (Predestination, Daybreakers), Winchester will begin filming early next year in Melbourne, Australia, before coming stateside to shoot in the real-life Winchester Mystery House. Fox Searchlight’s The Aftermath has cast Keira Knightley, Alexander Skarsgard and Jason Clarke in the top roles.

The Rhidian Brook novel The Aftermath was an international bestseller that takes place in Germany during the post-war era in 1946. A woman named Rachael is reunited arrives in the ruins of Hamburg with her only remaining son. Her husband, a British colonel, is in charge of rebuilding the shattered city.

The novel was adapted for the screen by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel, the duo who penned Race, the Jesse Owens biopic. They are currently working on an adaption of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. The adaptation will be directed by James Kent, who helmed Testament Of Youth. It is being produced by Ridley Scott’s Scott Free production company.

There are no happy endings in Sean Ellis’ World War II drama “Anthropoid.” But should a new plan to honor the heroes portrayed within the new war drama pan out, the true story’s gruesome history might be forever altered in an unexpectedly positive way.

Ellis’ latest film follows the true story of Czechoslovakian resistance fighters Josef Gabčík (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan), who undertook the nearly impossible mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich in Prague in 1942. The plan ultimately resulted in the deaths of Kubiš, Gabčík and five other Czechoslovakian fighters — and while Heydrich didn’t die immediately as planned, he did succumb to his injuries soon after, altering the course of the war forever — and while the soldiers have long been national heroes, over seven decades have passed without a proper burial for their bodies.

New parents get potentially deadly new neighbors in The Ones Below, the feature film directorial debut of David Farr (AMC’s The Night Manager, Hanna). With The Ones Below coming out in theaters and on VOD today, we recently caught up with Farr, who discussed working with David Morrissey (The Governor on The Walking Dead), the inspiration behind his new film, and much more.

David, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, and congratulations on your fantastic new film, The Ones Below. How did you come up with the idea for your latest movie? Is this is a story that you’ve been thinking about for a long time?

David Farr: The film was inspired by a conversation I had in 2011 with a great friend about the anxiety of parenting. I was directing him in a Harold Pinter play at the time. We both have children.
