Younger creator open to a revival series after success on Netflix
Image
Earlier this year, Netflix was able to replicate its Suits renaissance with another underrated cable television series. This time around, the TV Land comedy Younger made its way to Netflix for streaming in January 2025 and almost instantly became a streaming sensation. The show got a second life almost four years after coming to an end with its seventh and final season.

A number of things likely contributed to Younger becoming a success on Netflix. First of all, the series boasts seven seasons that are each 12 episodes. That's an 84-episode binge-watch in a time where viewers are looking for something much more substantial than the usual eight or 10 episodes every two years. The streamer also have the fan-favorite show a push to reach a broader audience.

Between its addition to Netflix in January to the last month, Younger's first season has logged over 2.4 billion views, with the rest of the...

Instant Streaming Hit With 97% On Rt That Was Canceled After 7 Seasons Could Return If Netflix Asked: "It Would Be A Fun Conversation To Have"
Image
With a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, Younger is currently a hit after being revived on streaming, and recently, the creator suggested he would be willing to return to the show if Netflix wants it. Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Pamela Redmond Satran, Younger is a single-camera comedy drama set in NYC, focusing on Liza Miller (Sutton Foster), a 40-year-old who decides to pose as a 20-something for better job and life prospects. The series aired on TV Land for five seasons before moving to Paramount+ and Hulu.

Despite high critical acclaim, Younger was canceled after season 7. However, the series has had something of a revival after being brought to Netflix. For the first five months of 2025, creator Darren Star's Younger was in the Top 10 of U.S. streaming for Netflix, creating a stir around the series (via Deadline). When asked about a possible revival, Star said...

Darren Star On ‘Younger’s Streaming Resurgence & Prospects Of Revival
Image
Of the hundreds of half-hour comedies available on streaming, one title dominated the U.S. rankings for the first five months of 2025, Darren Star’s 2015 TV Land series Younger, whose seven seasons took seven of the Top 10 spots in U.S. viewership for January-May for its Netflix run, according to data recently released by Luminate. Season 1 ranked the highest, at #3, logging 2.4B views, with the rest of the seasons charting at #5-#10 with viewership between 1.4B-1.9B.

Younger‘s ascend was almost instant after all seven seasons of the series, starring Sutton Foster as a 40-year old single mom pretending to be 26 in order to land an assistant job in publishing, were made available on Netflix domestically in January, almost a decade after the show made its debut on TV Land in March 2015. The series,...

What do the critics say about Taron Egerton's 'Smoke'?
Image
The newest Apple TV+ crime drama is getting some intriguing responses from professional reviewers.

Apple TV+ takes its crime dramas very seriously — for the most part. It infuses comedy into some, such as its beloved series “Bad Sisters,” but others like “Presumed Innocent” are as gritty as they come. It demonstrates the range of content available on the streamer, even within the same genre.

The newest crime drama to hit Apple TV+ is called “Smoke.” The show is a miniseries, which will release its first episode on the streamer on Friday, June 27.

“Smoke” is inspired by “Firebug,” a podcast that describes the crimes of arsonist John Leonard Orr. It features Taron Egerton as Dave Gudsen, an arson investigator who reluctantly teams up with Detective Michelle Calderon (Jurnee Smollett) to help stop two serial arsonists in the Pacific Northwest.

Thus far, the reviews for “Smoke” have been a bit mixed, but...

The Night Agent continued its run as the top streaming series in the United States in early February.

The Netflix spy drama captured 1.52 billion minutes of viewing time for the week of Feb. 3-9, the show’s third straight week in the top overall spot. Though it fell off by about 48 percent from the previous week, The Night Agent’s viewing total was still well ahead of the second-place show, Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias (1.07 billion minutes).

Apple TV+’s Severance is also doing well. The series ranked fourth among original streaming shows with 557 million minutes of viewing. While this is slightly lower than its first two weeks (589 million and 622 million minutes), Severance is now Apple TV+’s most-watched show since Ted Lasso in 2023.

Another Netflix spy drama, The Recruit, had a strong week too. Its second season premiere brought in 1.19 billion minutes of viewing, up from 925 million for its first season debut in 2022.

Season two of Severance is shaping up as one of Apple TV+’s most watched series to date.

The series ranked fourth among original streaming shows for the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2, according to Nielsen, with 557 million minutes of viewing. Hilary Duff Starred In One Of Metacritic's Lowest-Rated Horror Movies
Image
Movies and TV shows about true crime can be hit or miss, to say the least; sometimes, the families of real killers accuse the project of exploitation, and other times, it's just insensitive. That's what makes former Disney teen idol Hilary Duff's 2019 film "The Haunting of Sharon Tate" so baffling. Not only is it based on the very real murder of Sharon Tate at the hands of Charles Manson and his followers in her Hollywood home in 1969, but it has Duff, as Tate, playing the murdered woman's ghost as she relives the events of the horrific Manson killings.

"The Haunting of Sharon Tate" is, to put it lightly, a bizarre movie, and though it's not Duff's fault that this misguided project is pretty bad, the evidence of its numerous failures as a movie (and retelling of Tate's death) is evident in its Metacritic score. The movie only earned a...

Streaming Ratings: ‘The Night Agent’ Hits Series High With Season 2 Premiere
Image
The success of The Night Agent is apparently not a one-season phenomenon.

The Netflix thriller recorded its biggest week to date with the opening of its second season. The show amassed 3.11 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Jan. 20-26 (season two premiered Jan. 23), according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings, topping its previous best of 3.06 billion minutes in March 2023.

Nielsen says viewing of season two accounted for 76 percent of the weekly total, which works out to about 2.36 billion minutes.

After making its debut on the streaming charts a week earlier, Apple TV+’s Severance improved a little on that performance with 622 million minutes of viewing (a gain of about 6 percent week to week). That’s the highest weekly total for any Apple TV+ show since Ted Lasso in 2023.

The previous week’s overall No. 1, Netflix’s movie Back in Action, came down a little bit but still had a...

Netflix Nabs Darren Star & David Schulner’s Napa Valley Dramedy ‘Uncorked’ With Big Commitment
Image
Exclusive: Emily In Paris creator Darren Star and New Amsterdam creator David Schulner have teamed for Uncorked, a half-hour, single-camera dramedy that has landed at Netflix with a script-to-series commitment, sources tell Deadline.

Details of the premise are being kept under wraps, but I hear the series is set in Napa Valley and, like many of Star’s series, has a female lead.

Star and Schulner are co-writing and executive producing Uncorked through Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, where Star has an overall and Schulner a first-look deal.

The duo recently pitched the show, which had five buyers pursuing it in a competitive situation, I hear. Uncorked ultimately landed at Netflix, home of Star’s rom-com hit Emily In Paris, with a significant script-to-series commitment.

Reps for Netflix and Universal TV declined comment.

This is one of two projects Star took out in January under the multi-year overall...

Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas Novel ‘Climbing in Heels’ Gets Peacock TV Deal, Darren Star Attached
Image
Peacock has won the rights to develop Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ upcoming novel “Climbing in Heels” into a TV series, Variety has learned.

Peacock has given the drama project a script-to-series commitment. It was first reported in December that Universal TV was taking the show to market, with Goldsmith-Thomas and Darren Star set to serve as co-writers and executive producers.

“I am thrilled that ‘Climbing In Heels’ was taken off the table so quickly by Peacock,” Goldsmith-Thomas said. “It is the perfect home for Darren and I to bring these fabulously complicated and colorful characters to life”

The official description of the show states that it is “a fictional tale following the rise of five ambitious secretaries navigating the glitzy world of 1980s Hollywood while offering a glimpse into the boys-will-be-boys club and the women who wanted a seat at a table where they were expected to serve.”

Peacock Nabs Darren Star & Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ ‘Climbing In Heels’ With Big Commitment
Image
Peacock has landed Climbing in Heels, Emily In Paris creator Darren Star and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas’ drama series adaptation of her upcoming novel of the same name, with a script-to-series commitment. This marks the first big sale for Star under the multi-year overall deal he signed with Universal Television last year.

Deadline first reported of Universal TV preemptively buying the rights to Climbing in Heels in December, ahead of the novel’s April 29, 2025 release via St. Martin’s Press. The adaptation was taken in January, with Universal TV sibling Peacock quickly taking it off the market with an aggressive script-to-series bid.

Star, who also created Sex and the City, and Goldsmith-Thomas will co-write and executive produce the proposed series, which he describes as the “ballsy and bawdy love child of Mad Men and Sex and the City.”

A story of friendship, betrayal, survival and ambition, Climbing In Heels follows the rise of...

Currently in development, the stage musical adaptation will be directed by Sam Gold, with music production by Jeanine Tesori. The two last worked together on the Tony-winning hit 2015 musical Fun Home.

The stage adaptation will include songs from Lynn’s career and stories from her life, some beyond the 1980 film’s ending.

Patsy Lynn, Loretta Lynn’s manager, producer, and daughter, will serve as a consulting producer on the project, along with Loretta’s longtime adviser Nancy Russell.

According to Lynn’s family, Loretta Lynn had given her stamp of approval to both the project and Sutton’s casting prior to her death at 90 in 2022.

Maybe It’s the Daddy Issues, But Younger’s Charles Has Stolen My Heart … Now Steal Liza’s!

Younger’s messiness and fun make for a delightful binge.

Thus far, I’ve been enjoying myself, curled up under a blanket, pretending to work, while really losing myself in the lives of Younger‘s characters and all the ridiculous fun that runs rampant at Empirical.

Did I laugh at Thad’s outlandish demise during Younger Season 2 Episode 12? Absolutely.

Am I gobsmacked at Kelsey moving in with Josh? You betcha.

Does every broach and necklace Diana dons crack me up? Every single time. Also, she’s the greatest character in this series, and I’m not taking any pushback on this cold-hard fact.

Oui, oui! Emily in Paris confirmed for 2025 return with season 5
Image
If you have been missing Emily in Paris and have been feeding your craving by watching Younger on Netflix, or any of the other romantic comedy series like Younger that we recommended, your ancillary binge-watches will eventually lead to Emily's return later this year. Netflix has officially confirmed that Emily in Paris season 5 will be released sometime in 2025!

The streaming service made the announcement in late January 2025 with the reveal of its 2025 programming slate, which included a number of fan-favorite Netflix original series like Stranger Things, Nobody Wants This, The Diplomat, Squid Game, and many more. Most of the series didn't receive release dates but were confirmed to drop at some point in 2025.

Emily in Paris season 5 hasn't yet started production as of February 2025. Back in November 2024, shortly after the release of season 4 part 2 in September, Variety shared that filming on season 5 would begin in May 2025, during the first week of the month.

10 Years Later, 'Sex and the City's Creator's 97% Rotten Tomatoes Comedy Is a Major Win for Netflix
Image
Sometimes, all you need after a hard day's work is to kick back and watch something light. Fortunately for those who like television, Darren Star is a series creator who was able to produce several titles that meet this criteria. The most famous of them is, of course, Sex and the City, which helped change the world of television. A decade ago, however, Starr created Younger, an excellent series that stayed under everybody's radar for a long time. Now, with the entire show coming to the Netflix catalog, it has found a new audience that is highly excited about it – as they should be.

Younger Season 8 Prospects Addressed by Miriam Shor Amid Release Demand (Exclusive)
Image
Younger came to an end in its seventh season, but one of the series' stars addressed whether the show's popularity on Netflix and fans' Season 8 release campaigns could indicate a return.

The TV Land dramedy began airing in 2015 and starred Sutton Foster as the 40-year-old divorcee Liza, who poses as a 20-something to dodge the ageist standards of the publishing industry. She ends up becoming embroiled in a love triangle, which had fans choosing Team Josh or Team Charles throughout the series' run.

Despite ending in 2021, Younger's arrival on Netflix on January 7 resulted in a whole new audience finding the show and its popularity has surged.

5 swoon-worthy romantic comedy series like Younger to watch next
Image
Even though Younger was a fan-favorite hit during its inital seven-season run, the series has kicked off 2025 by having a major resurgence. On Jan. 7, the TV Land original romantic comedy series from creator Darren Star was added to Netflix and popped. As of Feb. 6, the show remains in the top 10 alongside recent new seasons of hit Netflix originals The Night Agent and The Recruit.

It's the most recent library series to come to Netflix and experience the "Netflix effect," which simply means that new viewers are discovering the series and old viewers are rediscovering the series. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in March 2025, Younger originally aired between 2015 and 2021 and effectively filled a gap for actually good guilty pleasure programming we'd been missing.

While your Netflix (re)binge-watch of Younger might be nearing its end, you're likely wondering what show to add to your watch list to keep the good times rolling.

Two Seasons into Younger, Liza is Ruining My Liza/Josh Shipping
Image
Somehow, I managed to miss the Younger train when it originally aired on television.

Maybe I was under a rock, or it wasn’t something that immediately grabbed my attention in its heyday. It’s a pity since Sutton Foster had my heart during the tragically canceled Bunheads.

Anyway, Younger has been streaming on Netflix, and all it took was one graphic of Hilary Duff smiling and a dreary afternoon for me to press play.

(Paramount+/Screenshot)

It’s funny, quirky, and reminds me of a time when people genuinely thought we Millennials were the “It” thing and chased after our interest, taste, and dollar was actually a priority.

I must’ve been under a rock on that front, too, because all I can ever remember is a thousand different think-pieces about how we somehow ruined everything, but that’s a discussion for another day.

Netflix’s Spy Games: ‘Back in Action’ Fends Off ‘The Night Agent’ Season 2 as No. 1 on Streaming Top 10 | Chart
Image
Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx’s spy thriller “Back in Action” continues its dominance of the streaming landscape, maintaining its top position for a second consecutive week. After capturing 3.2 million U.S. households during its first weekend streaming, the action-packed film has shown remarkable staying power, demonstrating that audiences aren’t ready to let go of this high-stakes adventure.

Netflix showed its streaming supremacy with an impressive triple threat at the top of the charts, as “The Night Agent” Season 2 and “American Primeval” secured the No. 2 and No. 3 positions respectively.

The Paramount+ release of “Gladiator II” proved its box office success wasn’t a fluke, charging into No. 4, while Taylor Sheridan’s “Landman” was finally unseated from its lock on the top two slots over the last seven weeks to fall into No. 5. The success of “The Night Agent” Season 2 sparked renewed interest in its predecessor, with Season 1 claiming the No.

Darren Star has created many iconic series like Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, Sex and the City, and, most recently, Emily in Paris. Although not all series received stunning reviews, they have grown a loyal following.

The Irrational Season 2 Episode 10 Did A Deep Dive Into The Nature Of Trauma, And I’m Here For It
Image
The Irrational Season 2 Episode 10 had everything that made me fall hard for this show.

A creepy case involving a crew that disappeared turned into a disturbing one about mistreating recent immigrants to the United States — could it be any more timely?

Even more importantly, Alec’s dysfunctional relationship with his dad demonstrated the effects trauma can have on a family years after the fact.

(Sergei Bachlakov/NBC) Alec Wasn’t Immune To Irrationality Just Because He Studies The Brain

The Irrational was subtle about the irony of Alec being a brain expert whose brain was acting up.

Alec’s dismissal of Kylie and Marisa’s concerns made the point without belaboring it. The scene was perfect, and it also did something else important.

Alec overestimated his ability to deal with his conflict with his father, assuming that he could do so easily because of his advanced knowledge of how the human brain worked.

Here's Why Miriam Shor's Diana Left 'Younger' as a Series Regular
Image
A confluence of complications wreaked havoc on Younger Season 7 and significantly hampered the appearance of a main character.

In Younger, Tony Award-winner Sutton Foster played Liza Miller, a 40-year-old woman who poses as someone much younger than her actual age to give herself a leg up in the job market.

Liza lands a gig at a high-powered publishing gig called Empirical Press and must maintain the facade that she’s in her 20s, despite frequent circumstances that threaten to out her. Miriam Shor played Diana Trout, Liza’s boss at Empirical.

Why Hilary Duff’s ‘Younger’ Was Canceled After 7 Seasons

For seven stellar seasons, audiences anxiously tuned in to see how 40-something single mother Liza Miller would be able to juggle her thrilling double life, with the recent divorcée pretending to be a 26-year-old, in order to find success in an ageist publishing industry in the smash hit Younger.
