"And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all..."
The work of Edgar Allan Poe has been adapted for the big and small screen numerous times over the years, with several of the legendary writer's stories influencing Mike Flanagan's recent retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher.
The acclaimed Netflix miniseries put its own unique spin on The Masque of the Red Death, and we're now hearing that a feature adaptation is in the works. Deadline reports that A24 and Picturehouse are developing the project, with Charlie Polinger set to write and direct.
This take on the short story is described as "wildly revisionist and darkly comedic." Sydney Sweeney is in talks to play the lead role. No details on her character were disclosed, but we assume it'll be a gender-switched take on Prince Prospero.

Sydney Sweeney is booked and busy, and it looks like she's about to be even busier, as she’s reportedly in talks to star in The Masque of the Red Death, a collaboration between Picturestart and A24.
This announcement follows the recent news that the two-time Emmy-nominated actress will star in Lionsgate's upcoming film adaptation of The Housemaid. She is joined by Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, and Michele Morrone in this project, which is slated for a Christmas Day 2025 release. Other upcoming projects of hers include Euphoria season 3, which is set to start filming this month, a thriller titled Echo Valley and an untitled Christy Martin movie. Exclusive: A24 and Picturestart are teaming on The Masque of the Red Death, a wildly revisionist and darkly comedic take on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe, and are in negotiations with Sydney Sweeney to star. Charlie Polinger is writing and directing, with A24 handling domestic distribution. Polinger will also executive produce alongside Lucy McKendrick.
The original Poe short story follows a prince who attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. Details behind this new take are being kept under wraps. Sources say the film will shoot this year.
Sweeney, the Euphoria and White Lotus star, had herself a busy 2024 that included the hit rom-com Anyone But You and the Neon horror thriller Immaculate. She also had the HBO pic Reality, which earned her a Critics Choice Award. She is currently filming the Lionsgate adaptation of the novel The Housemaid.

The horror genre, particularly in a miniseries format, continues to rise in popularity year after year. The best of these produce jaw-dropping and heart-pounding moments that are hard to match with other genres. Rather than a traditional film, where the build-up, middle, and climax have to play out in a brisk feature-length time, in a series, there are no such constraints. This allows creators and directors time to let their storyline develop fully. This freedom allows the intense payoffs of intricate, layered stories, character development, and horrifying elements that make the best of these horror shows so unforgettable.
Though many talented hands go into each and every production, two stand above the rest, with horror stalwarts author Stephen King and filmmaker Mike Flanagan helping create many of the best horror shows of all time. Shows like It and the first part of one of the best horror anthologies, The Haunting of Hill House,...

Hybrid doc series “The Letelier File,” drilling down on what is often said to be the first act of international terrorism committed on U.S. soil, looks like one potential highlight among 11 projects selected for one-to-one meetings at Ventana Sur’s Latam Series Market.
“The Letelier File” unites big creative forces in Chilean film-tv – “Prison in the Andes” creator Felipe Carmona and helmers Rafael Valdeavellano and Nicolás Acuña, a director on Fox’s “Besieged” and Rtve/Tnc’s “The 1,000 Days of Allende.”
Also among the 11 projects is hybrid doc series “Blessed,” the first TV series developed by “The Settlers” producer Quijote Films.
Also in the mix is “Couple’s Apartment,” created by Azul Lombardia – creator-director of “Según Roxi,” seen on Netflix, Latin America’s Movistar and Tvp, movie “Doberman” and big Netflix hit “No me rompan” – and Lucas Mirvois, co-creator of podcast success “Malas Decisiones,” starring Anna Castillo, and “Según Roxi.

Throughout each game mode of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, characters will often mention the ominous and imposing threat from the Chaos Gods, but without much explanation. While Tzeentch is the only Chaos God with a major influence over the story and enemies fought within Space Marine 2, they all make up a significant part of 40K lore.
Not only are these otherworldly deities vital to the events of the franchise and the history leading up to the events of Space Marine 2, but they could affect future Dlc content, be it cosmetics or entirely new enemies to battle. While it's easy to view the Chaos Gods as omnipotent deities, they rely heavily on influencing humans and other species to do their bidding in their attempt to take over the material realm.

San Sebastian — From when it began to incorporate Spanish TV series in its Official Selection – think 2017’s “The Plague” or 2020’s double whammy of “Patria” and “Riot Police” – San Sebastián has used its first Saturday to debate TV issues.
This time round, a panel highlighted crime series, featuring Movistar Plus+’s Susana Herreras, Laura Sarmiento, showrunner of Netflix hit “Intimacy” and lead writer on “Burning Body,” and Elías León Siminiani, co-creator of the 2017 docuseries “El caso Asunta (Operación Nenúfar)” which inspired the 2024 Netflix fiction series, “El Caso Asunta.”
Six takes on the panel discussion:
Spanish Crime Series Boom
The panel was entitled in Spanish “The Spanish Crime Series Boom.” That seems an understatement. According to Variety research, through Sept. 13 this year, seven Spanish titles hit No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Non-English TV series charts, occupying the top-charting position for a total 15 of the period’s total 35 weeks. Movistar Plus+ Reaches ‘Final Step’ of Its Current Evolution with Ambitious Theatrical Feature Plans
No company has a more powerful spread of productions at this year’s San Sebastian Festival than Telefónica’s domestic platform and super-producer Movistar Plus+. The group brings a festival competition movie, “I’m Nevenka,” a premium drama series, “Querer,” a broad audience thriller series, “Celeste” and “Mugaritz,” a documentary feature about Spain’s most cerebral restaurant.
The diverse projects underscore Movistar Plus+’s muscular new content initiatives as the company drives ever more into nonfiction, emerging as Spain’s leader, and launching its first movie slate in January. Spain’s biggest national investor isn’t pulling out of content; in fact, it’s diving into deeper.
For nearly a decade, Movistar Plus+ has both increased the amount of content it produces and diversified the kinds of productions it backs. During the early days of streaming, Movistar Plus+ was a pioneer of local production by investing larger-than- ever budgets in its TV productions.

In 2017, Movistar Plus, Spain’s biggest SVOD-pay TV player, rocked the San Sebastian Festival, the highest-profile movie event in Spain and Latin America region, with “The Plague,” the biggest series ever made in Spain.
Movistar Plus, owned by Telefónica, looks set to make waves again at this week’s San Sebastian by world premiering another big, bold series: “La Mesías.”
It’s written, directed and produced by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo – known in Spain as Los Javis – marking their follow-up to overseas breakout “Veneno,” a raunchy but highly grounded bio of Spanish trans icon Cristina Ortiz. “Veneno” was picked up by HBO Max for the U.S. market and made Ambrossi and Calvo among the most courted young showrunners in Europe.
“We’ve had to say ‘no’ to a lot of things, to big offers, a lot of money from and outside Spain, to keep faithful to ourselves, and...
