- Elderly gentleman Roger Compton is visited by two women from social services at his home. Having recently lost his estranged son and daughter-in-law in a car accident they inform him he has a grand-daughter. This comes as a surprise to Roger who hasn't spoken to his son in ten years, having had a falling out. They tell him her name is Charlotte and that Roger has been named as her legal guardian. If he chooses to take her in, then they will assess his ability to care and provide for her over the following days, if not, then Charlotte will be placed into care. Roger is asked to think about it, but upon studying a photograph of the young girl, he agrees to look after her. A few days later Roger is given the belongings of his son from the car crash. Amongst them he finds a mobile phone with an open gps route to Roger's home alongside an envelope addressed to him containing a rare stamp missing from one of his collections.
