‘Burnt Milk:’ Criterion Channel Acquires Venice Biennale Film By Joseph Douglas Elmhirst

Exclusive: Burnt Milk, a film project from British-Jamaican filmmaker Joseph Douglas Elmhirst, has been acquired by the Criterion Channel.

The film is available to watch on the streamer starting today.

Running just over nine minutes, Burnt Milk was commissioned by the British Pavilion for the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale, marking the first time a film was included as part of the Pavilion’s official offerings.

The film was shot on rich 16mm Kodak and is shaped around a lyrical monologue voiced by Tamara Lawrance (Get Millie Black), but attributed to the fictional Una, played by first-time actor Clover Webb, who we see on-screen. She’s an older Jamaican woman in London, a member of the Windrush generation, and her life is beset by the crippling isolation of 1980’s England. Thatcher’s England. One day, she takes a moment of solace to make burnt milk, a ritual that takes her and the audience back home.

Vietnam hit ‘The Real Sister’ lands US, Anz sales ahead of EFM

Vietnamese box office hit The Real Sister has been sold to key territories by Skyline Media, which will introduce the drama to the international market at the EFM in Berlin this week.

The family drama is scheduled for release across North America on February 21 through Eastern Edge Films (Eef), and will be followed by theatrical releases in Australia and New Zealand on February 27 through Infinity Entertainment.

Since its release in Vietnam on December 20, the film has led the box office for five consecutive weeks, ahead of US tentpoles Mufasa: The Lion King, Moana 2 and Sonic The Hedgehog 3. It...

V Pictures, Launched By Vietnam Arm Of Korea’s Cj Cgv, Makes Market Debut In Busan With ‘Face Off 7: One Wish’, Horror Hit ‘Ma Da’

Exclusive: V Pictures, a subsidiary of the Vietnamese arm of Korean exhibitor Cj Cgv, is making a big push into international sales of Vietnamese movies here at Busan’s Asian Contents and Film Market (Acfm), with a slate including recent hits Face Off 7: One Wish and Ma Da: The Drowning Spirit.

Directed by Ly Hai, Face Off 7: One Wish is the latest instalment in a blockbuster franchise and the second highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time, taking more than $19M since its release in April 2024. V Pictures has already distributed the film in Taiwan and Singapore.

Horror movie Ma Da, directed by Nguyen Huu Hoang, is the highest-grossing Vietnamese horror film ever at the local box office with a take of $5.1M (VND126BN). It also recently became the second highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time in Taiwan.
