Happy Face Premiere Review: Paramount+ Has a Different Serial Killer Series
Image
Quick LinksHappy Face Is Memorable For What It Doesn't ShowHappy Face's Cast Brings the True Story to Life Exceedingly WellHappy Face Stumbles When It Moves Away From Melissa's Story

The following contains major spoilers from Happy Face Episodes 1 & 2, "The Confession" & "Killing Shame," now streaming on Paramount+. It also contains discussion of violence.

Happy Face is unlike any other "based on a true story" crime drama. The Paramount+ series -- inspired by the life story of Melissa G. Moore, as well as her Happy Face podcast and her memoir Shattered Silence -- is about a serial killer, but it's not centered on him. Instead, the show opts to tell the tale of the Happy Face Killer through the perspective of his daughter, and to talk about everything surrounding his heinous acts of violence.

The eight-episode series is a fictionalization of the story of Keith Hunter Jesperson, but it's Keith's daughter Melissa who is front and center.

Image
Dragon Ballis full of unforgettable characters, but Vegeta quickly became a fan-favorite figure with an even bigger fandom than Goku. Vegeta’s evolution from belligerent villain to Goku’s friendly rival, a loving husband, father, and one of Earth’s strongest heroes is some of Dragon Ball’s strongest storytelling. Vegeta is surprisingly complex and nuanced, but there’s still something to be said about his endless appetite for combat.

Vegeta’s ego and pride are in a league of their own, and he loves it when he’s able to prove that he’s the best. Unfortunately, these same traits sometimes get the better of Vegeta and set him up for failure. Several characters try to call Vegeta’s bluff and assume his bark is worse than his bite, but things never ends well for anyone who underestimates Vegeta.

But his relationship with Laura has grown in ways no one could have seen coming. How will she justify that to her daughter — who only lost nearly four years of her life because of that man’s intent to kill Jason Morgan (Steve Burton)?

Why Planet of the Apes Fans Need to Watch This Underrated Alien Invasion Thriller
Image
Captive State delves into an alien-occupied Chicago, portraying a human revolt against oppressive extraterrestrial rulers. Characters like Caesar and Gabe represent the incited heroes in challenging environments, emphasizing inspirational forces against adversity. Captive State highlights the potential monster within humanity, reflecting a cautionary tale mirroring the darker aspects of society.

The following article contains a brief mention of suicide.

If you're a Planet of the Apes fan, there's no better time to be alive. Hollywood has the old-school movies, as well as the reboot that Mark Wahlberg tried to lead. Though the latter didn't pan out, Fox eventually pivoted in a smart way with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which launched a more successful trilogy of movies, and now, a franchise.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a brilliant reinvention from director Rupert Wyatt, showing how an attempted cure for Alzheimer's Disease resulted in a virus killing humans,...

The Worst & Best Episode Of Every X-Men: The Animated Series Season
Image
X-Men: The Animated Series had standout episodes like "Days of Future Past," showcasing thrilling action and gripping narratives. Some episodes, like "Captive Hearts," struggled to match the dynamism and quality of the majority, hindering the overall impact. Season finales like "Graduation Day" provided poignant conclusions, offering closure to character arcs and thematic narratives.

X-Men: The Animated Series featured many great episodes throughout its legendary run, though some episodes were notably less effective. The acclaimed Marvel cartoon boasted 76 episodes across five thrilling seasons. Among these, the very strongest X-Men: The Animated Series episodes helped cultivate an impressive reputation that led to a triumphant revival decades later with Marvels X-Men 97. Other episodes, on the other hand, were far less effective though sometimes merely by comparison.

X-Men: The Animated Series adapted many classic Marvel Comics stories, often depicting them across multiple episode sagas and two-part narratives. It is worth noting that X-Men: The Animated Series...

The Beach House (Jeffrey A. Brown)

There’s a lot to like about Jeffrey A. Brown’s feature directorial debut The Beach House, from its gorgeous production design to its ruminations on mankind’s fragility when compared with Mother Nature’s hardier offerings (despite our penchant for believing we hold dominion over Her). It’s therefore easy to appreciate the reason Emily (Liana Liberato), Randall (Noah Le Gros), Mitch (Jake Weber), and Jane (Maryanne Nagel) have arrived at a site that may end up being their tomb because we’re quick to ignore the baked-in irony too. Bertrand Bonello in L'Apollonide (Souvenirs de la maison close) (2011)

James Corden in Pierre Lapin (2018)
Peter Rabbit 2 Release Date Delayed Because of Coronavirus Fears
James Corden in Pierre Lapin (2018)
Peter Rabbit hit theaters in February 2018 as a hybrid live-action/CGI franchise reboot that injected the classic stories of Beatrix Potter with contemporary energy. The result was a film that – akin to the stealthy precision of Peter in Farmer McGregor’s garden – quietly banked $115 million domestically, totaling $351.2 million globally, and was even the U.K.’s top family film of 2018, out-grossing Pixar’s Coco.

Consequently, it didn’t take Sony Pictures long to consider Peter Rabbit 2, giving it the official greenlight and a 2020 release date; a move made just one month after the original’s release. Indeed, main cast members such as the voice of the larcenous lepus himself, James Corden, as well as Domhnall Gleeson and Rose Byrne, are set to return, as will director Will Gluck, who, just as with the first film, wrote the script with Patrick Burleigh.

MK2 Mile End will distribute “We Had It Coming” in Canada; O2 Play, the theatrical, TV and DVD distribution company of Fernando Mereilles’ O2 Filmes production house, will release “The Friendly Man,” now in advanced post-production, in Brazil.

Media Luna will introduce both titles to buyers at next month’s Cannes Film Market.

San Sebastián Film Review: ‘Alpha, The Right to Kill’
Don’t come to “Alpha, The Right to Kill,” the latest rough-hewn slab of social realism from Filipino auteur Brillante Ma Mendoza, in search of revelations, either in form or content. A rumbling, street-pounding drug-war thriller, it’s far from the first film to paint cops and dealers on this beat as equally bent; a Mendoza joint that drags viewers brusquely through the ragged poverty and institutional corruption of modern Manila is hardly an unfamiliar proposition either. “Alpha” doesn’t profess to be anything new, however: There’s a bone-weary resignation to its worldview that underlines its simple moral point all the more effectively.

That said, this story of a Swat officer and a punkish informant’s fateful outside-the-law collaboration is Mendoza’s most propulsive and engrossing variation on his favored themes in some time. It’s also his most straight-up genre exercise to date — somewhat reminiscent of José Padilha...

HBO Boards ‘Storm Over Brooklyn’ Feature Doc From ‘Whitney’ Producer Lightbox
HBO has come on board a feature documentary about a black American teenager shot to death by a group of white youths in 1989. The premium broadcaster has greenlit Storm Over Brooklyn, directed by Muta’Ali and produced by Lightbox, the U.S./UK firm behind Netflix series Captive.

Storm Over Brooklyn won the inaugural Feature Documentary Initiative, created by Lightbox and the American Black Film Festival (Abff), as part of a joint initiative to foster diversity in feature docs.

The doc tells the story of Yusuf Hawkins, a black American teenager who was shot and murdered after being trapped by a group of white youths in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, on the evening of August 23, 1989. Sixteen-year- old Hawkins had come to Bensonhurst with three friends to look at a used car when they were attacked by the mob, whose members mistakenly believed that Hawkins was dating a neighbourhood girl who was white.

Peter Rabbit 2 Release Date and Trailer
Joseph Baxter Jan 15, 2020

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway is happening, with James Corden and the rest of the main cast returning in time for Easter.

Indeed, main cast members such as the voice of the larcenous lepus himself, James Corden, as well as Domhnall Gleeson and Rose Byrne, are set to return,...

A United Kingdom movie review: a love that changed the world
MaryAnn’s quick take… Insistent chemistry between David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike fuels a true story of passionate romance with an urgent message about love as radical and political. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast; desperate for stories about women

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Here is a story to drive bigots crazy. And it’s even true.

In 1947, Seretse Khama was a young man from the British protectorate of Bechuanaland in southern Africa studying in London when he met Ruth Williams, a young English woman. They fell in love, and that upset all sorts of people for all sorts of reasons. He was black, and she was white, and both their families took issue with their romance for the usual stupid irrational reasons. But the governments of both countries also freaked out. Seretse was heir to the throne of Bechuanaland,...

The Weekend Warrior 9/30/2016: Deepwater Horizon, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Masterminds
Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

While the new movies reigned at the box office this past weekend, both Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven (Sony) and the animated Storks (Warner Bros.) didn’t fare nearly as well as our projections, both falling short by about $10 million. The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, fared decently with $34.7million, which is about the average for Washington’s films, but the fourth highest opening for a Western after last year’s The Revenant, the animated Rango, and Cowboys and Aliens. Storks’ $21.3 million opening wasn’t great compared to other animated September releases with Sony still holding the September opening record with Hotel Transylvania 2, but it should continue to do well with no other animated movies opening for another month.

The Weekend Warrior 9/16/16: Blair Witch, Bridget Jones’s Baby, Snowden, Hillsong: Let Hope Rise
Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

This Past Weekend:

Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

Morgan movie review: AI why?
Eschewing the compelling Sf questions it raises, Morgan resorts to violence and would-be cleverness, and makes concrete what it should have left ambiguous. I’m “biast” (pro): desperate for movies about women; big Sf geek

Tips for young filmmakers hoping to break out from under the shadow of their famous filmmaker daddies with their directorial debuts: Don’t make a movie that invites comparison to one of Daddy’s best known, best loved, and just plain best movies. And if you must do that, consider ensuring that your movie compares favorably to Daddy’s movie.

Ps: Luke Scott, son of Ridley, is not that young. (He’s 48.) And his directorial debut, Morgan, does not compare favorably to Blade Runner. And the comparisons are inevitable. Morgan thinks it’s riffing on an intriguing ambiguity of Blade Runner,...

David Oyelowo
Grief can take hold of even the strongest people and refuse to let go. It’s why they describe it as a “process.” Maris Curran’s “Five Nights In Maine” takes this idea to heart as it follows Sherwin (David Oyelowo), a recent widower who lost his wife Fiona (Hani Furstenberg) in a car accident. Stricken by grief and depression, he travels to a remote corner of Maine to see Fiona’s cancer-stricken mother Lucinda (Dianne Wiest) who’s being taken care of by caring nurse Ann (Rosie Perez). Captive movie review: prisoner of boredom
So inept a film, so bland and monotonous, that it fails even to serve as the blatant ad for the certain Christian motivational book it would appear to be. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

True story: In 2005, recovering drug addict Ashley Smith was held hostage in her own Atlanta apartment for seven hours by Brian Nichols, who had earlier escaped from the courthouse where he was on trial for rape; in the course of his escape, he murdered several people, including the judge presiding in his case. Afterward, once Nichols had been recaptured, Smith’s story went viral because she said she’d read to her abductor from the Christian motivational book The Purpose Driven Life,...

David Oyelowo in Selma (2014)
David Oyelowo: 'A lack of opportunities for black actors pushed me out of the UK'
David Oyelowo in Selma (2014)
David Oyelowo says a lack of opportunity for minority actors was behind his decision to leave the UK and work abroad in Hollywood.

Oyelowo broke a colour barrier as the first black actor to play an English king in a major Shakespearan production in 2001, but in recent years has focused on Hollywood projects like Selma and A Most Violent Year.

Speaking at the launch of the Creative Diversity report, Oyelowo blamed a lack of opportunity for black, Asian and minority ethnic actors on an inherent bias in the commissioning process.

"Who is curating the culture? Predominately white, middle-class men," Oyelowo argued (via The Stage).

"Until we have a situation whereby here in Britain there are curators of culture who are reflective of what Britain actually is, especially in our cities, nothing is going to change. Because at the end of the day we all have prejudices, we all have allegiances...
