A Pleasant Surprise

The previews and trailers made me worried it would be too cheesy, but I've been pleasantly surprised. I've been bored by many of the more recent sitcoms (it's hard to love again after 'Parks and Recreation' was so perfect and so many shows feel stale or overly forced.) Mid-Century Modern feels like watching 'The Golden Girls,' 'The Nanny,' or 'Just Shoot Me' again for the first time - stupid in the best way, chock-full of hilarious little quips, and has heart without being smug about it. If you're a lover of classic sitcoms or a fan of Nathan Lane's character in 'The Birdcage,' you might consider giving this one a go, it's a lot of fun and they have some fantastic guest stars.

One of the years best

It's been a long time since we had a gay sitcom with a laugh track. Please renew it for season 2.

Binged through the whole season in one afternoon / easily addictive.

Yes it's a sitcom don't be a snob, it's OK to like a laugh track comedy. Some of the very best shows were from this format. Not everything has to be artsy.

Nathan Lane is at his comical best. Nathan Lee Graham and Matt Bomer are excellent. The supporting characters and guest stars funny - Richard Kind is hilarious in a couple episodes.

Easily digestible and watchable. Please Hulu give this a quick renewal. Need more episodes!!! 🙏🏻

Takes a minute but very enjoyable

Whenever I watch a multicam sitcom for the first time in a while, it always takes a minute to not feel like the jokes are forced and in your face but this one settles in really nicely. Push through the first episode and its storyline setup and you'll probably appreciate it.

Some jokes are cliche but many are very very funny and I enjoy that the humour isn't so clean and conservative. It can be very funny when characters drop the f-bomb and talk about real and relatable gay topics. It also features a great cast with some very recognisable sitcom actors in each episode.

I've easily and enjoyably binged the whole season in one day and would happily watch a season 2.

Season 2 please

I turned on Hulu today and discovered a brand-new show that had just dropped - I had no idea it was released today! After reading the synopsis, I decided to give it a try. All I can say is that I started watching and ended up bingeing the entire season in one sitting - it was that good! The show has a very 'Golden Girls' vibe, which I loved. I was taken aback by how much I enjoyed it, especially since it's a new show. Normally, I prefer watching shows with multiple seasons already under their belt. Without giving away any spoilers, I just want to say that this show is extremely well-done, and I'm eagerly waiting for another season !

LOVE IT!

I don't understand why people don't get the jokes or the fun. There are so many dark things on tv. It's nice to turn on one thing about friends, family and love. It's a breather from all the true crime, depressing documentaries and the news which is mostly horrific. No one makes fun shows anymore. If they are funny it's because you're laughing at someone's misery on reality tv. I like the show because when I get home I just need a cleanse from all the world drama. Just 30 minutes when I can just decompress and this show does it for me. I just hope they do not cancel it because it is not getting critical praise. It's a 30 minute sitcom. Does anyone who posts these reviews remember what those are?

A breath of fresh air

With everything going on in the Country today it's refreshing to have a show like this. Mid-Centry Modern is like a 90's sitcom with a laugh track, great acting and fun little stories. Mat Bomer is adorable as always and Nathan Lane is a class act in this role. So sad to see that Linda Lavin is in it and not here with us anymore and is exactly what this show needed.i totally recommend Mid-Century Modern bright sets, witty humor, great writing and a realistic look at how gay culture is really like. If you want to just sit back and relax this is the show for you. The Golden Girls of the century.

Made my day!

I really love this show! It brought me right back to being with my nana watching The Golden Girls! We need more sitcoms like this, something that is fun and easy to watch. I don't understand the bad reviews at all. How can you not like something so special? I spent the majority of my day prepping my families favorite dinner and watching Mid Century Modern made the day fly by. I LOVE the cast and can never pass up a Ryan Murphy production. Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer and Nathan Lee Graham should be so so proud. This show made me laugh and cry (RIP Linda Lavin) and just made me happy. We need more happy, bring on season 2!

It's cute. Very light and relaxing.

EP1 was a little overloaded with off color jokes IMHO, but by EP2 it settled into standard sitcom comfort food. I love seeing Linda Lavin having fun in her role. The other actors are great, and everyone is likable. I'm glad I gave it more time. This show gives me a little bit of a meta vibe like "Hot In Cleveland", in that you are kind of expected to know who the actors are and be in on the fun. I've seen some reviewers having negative thoughts about Matt Bomer's involvement, but coming from someone who had no idea who he was I think his character is really endearing and fun. This is after all supposed to be fun. I like this show and I hope it gets a second season.

Definitely watchable

It's cute and watchable, but I think they missed the mark on Mat Bomer's character. They are making his character seem stupid and I don't think that's what they want. Look at Rose from Golden girls or Georgette from Mary Tyler Moore Show. They were naive, but neither of them were stupid. Linda Lavin and Nathan Lane fit well as Mother and Son. I was excited to hear he was getting a tv show and he didn't disappoint. I've only seen episode 1 so far, but I plan on watching the rest. I'll give them this, they absolutely picked a wonderful cast. And to be honest, I'm happy they aren't straight men playing gay roles.

Loved it. Instant classic!

Was a bit apprehensive that it was going to be too cliché or overworked. Funny and original and a joy to watch. Very well written and great chemistry between the characters. I hope there's more than one season, as it deserves it. I was under the impression that it was a Golden Girls remake. The similarity is there and the homage is obvious. But it's unique enough to stand on its own. The humour is smart without trying too hard, and the pacing is spot on. It's warm, witty, and surprisingly grounded. A refreshing take on ageing, friendship, and reinvention. One of the most charming ensemble comedies I've seen in years. More, please.

Sooo broad, and the laugh track is annoying

The humor in this show is way too broad, the acting rather atrocious and the laugh track is off-putting in this day and age. I normally really like Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer, but they are not doing a great job with the material they're given, and I simply cannot understand why a hot young guy like Matt's character chooses to live with two old queens in Palm Springs. Linda Lavin is excellent, however, RIP, so it's a real shame they won't be able to bring her back if there's a second season. There is a lot of potential in the set-up and, since I'm only three episodes in so far, maybe it will improve.

Not working

I really wanted to like this. I really like all three leads in other things, but I found this pandering and stereotyped. The gay community has evolved past this sort of thing to a dull mainstream existence, so it doesn't seem realistic in the modern age. The laugh track is cringe, and the setup seems... dated.

It clearly does want to evoke memories of the Golden Girls and Will and Grace: a hot man as dumb as Joey from Friends, with a dash of Lucille Bluth in the form of the mother, but it seems stagey and overacted and the situation contrived. The gags illicit the odd chuckle in a gently humorous way, don't get me wrong, but in an eye-roll kind of way. The sets look like sets on a network comedy from the Golden Girls era. The whole thing is like something from the past in many ways.

A new Classic Sitcom is born!

If you love Hot In Cleveland and The Golden Girls then you might appreciate this fantastic new comedy.

It is lovely, feel good TV with lots of heart and we sure do need plenty of that at the moment!

I hope that the fabulous Linda Lavin dying doesn't stop future episodes from happening as the show really does deserve at least a couple of seasons.

Hopefully we will soon see Mid-Century Modern's popularity rise and it can take it's righful place as a "modern classic" alongside Hot In Cleveland.

Speaking of which, if anyone on the team is reading this: Get Wendie Malick on the phone. Victoria Chase would be perfect as a guest character in an episode!

The Perfect Blend of Golden Girls Charm and Modern Wit

If you're a fan of The Golden Girls, Mid-Century Modern will quickly become your new favorite! Nathan Lane absolutely steals the show, delivering his iconic comedic brilliance with warmth and depth. He's the heart and soul of the series, effortlessly anchoring the ensemble cast. Alongside Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham, and the late Linda Lavin, the chemistry between the characters is fantastic. The show centers on three gay men living together with the mother of one, bringing a delightful mix of humor, wit, and emotional moments. If you love the charm and clever banter of The Golden Girls, you'll find it in spades here. Mid-Century Modern is a must-watch, full of laughter, heart, and unforgettable characters.

What a wonderful surprise

It's a 10 for the potential, as I think it will take a bit of time to get the dynamics just right. It's such a pleasure to see Matt Bomer in a comedy (I've only seen him in dramas before). If Nathan Lane can tone down the overacting a bit, the energy level will be more balanced and let the humor shine through. It's such a bit of fun, something we really need these days. So glad I found this!

Linda Lavin and the other actors are quite enjoyable. I do hope that Linda's passing won't hinder future seasons. I'd like to keep enjoying this show for a long time. Fingers crossed for the creative energies to keep flowing.

Can't wait for season 2!

Mid-Century Modern is an easy, fluffy, comfort show that let's you take a break from reality for 25 minutes at a time. Just what's needed right now in this world!

It's a nostalgic throwback to the sitcoms of the past. Not trying to reinvent the wheel, which it didn't have to.

The acting was great for the most part, with the biggest surprise being Matt Bomer, who brought a real depth to the character of Jerry. He had amazing standout moments in episodes 3 and 5 that made him the heart of the show.

I can't wait to see more of this comforting little gem of a show. Definitely hoping for a second season!

Bomer and company bomb.

A pitiful waste of multiple talents.

It is painful to watch Bomer play a character dumber than dirt after watching him play the intelligent and witty Neal Caffrey.

It also resorts to the old stereotype of a gay man and his shrewish mother

The jokes are older than Moses, while the punch lines can be seen from a mile away.

I was hoping this would have dry, witty, sarcastic humor like a gay male version of The Golden Girls.

It is made worse by the fact that two of the leading men are actually gay and have personally destroyed most of the traditional and incorrect ideas about gay men.

If this show gets a second season, I hope it improves by leaps and bounds.

Last-Century Old School Sitcom

I want to like this. But... there is so much that is wrong with this clunky series. First and foremost, it strives to be an 'edgy' and 'modern' streaming production with risqué humor... the writing for which seems forced and often falls flat. But really is a legacy network style broadcast sitcom reminiscent of the Golden Girls... and with a laugh track. It is riddled with tired gay and Jewish stereotypes that we've seen and heard a thousand times before, and seem to be employed as explosive devices rather than organic weaves.

The performances are... mediocre at best, and often more suited to the stage than a television production. The main characters vacillate between believable and over-the-top preening. Linda Lavin manages quite well to add dimension and interest to what is largely a one-dimensional Jewish grandmother stereotype. And adds a layer of humor as well.

I don't hate it overall... but I don't love it either. I hope it comes together to deliver something along the lines of Schitts Creek, but I'm not optimistic.

Not the Golden Girls but Bronze Boys is fun

My Review- Mid Century Modern Streaming on Disney My Rating 7/10

Is Mid Century Modern the new Ryan Murphy series created by by Max Mutchnickand David Kohan as good as The Golden Girls the famous mid 1980 series that it is based on ?

No it's not as you can't improve on perfection but it ,does try and succeeds with some very funny moments.

However it's perfectly cast well written and I thought it was quite entertaining with a good balance of humour and pathos .

Will Mid Century Modern be as popular with a similar target audience that certainly included Gay men to The Golden Girls ? I'm quite sure.

The target audience of Mid Century Modern is certainly aimed at gay men of a certain age but I'm not sure if it's edgy enough for Gen Y Gen Z audiences however we shall see.

The similarities to the Golden Girls are obvious instead of a situation comedy about Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia sharing their luxury Florida home together we switch the genders of the three main characters.

Series one of this ten part series is set in Palm Springs and introduces us to the characters three gay men of a certain age who are best friends .

Bunny Schneideman played by Nathan Lane is the wise cracking Jewish son of Sybil Schneiderman played by Linda Lavin who sadly passed away last December.

Both mother and son own the house in Palm Springs and both share the same caustic wit trading affectionate sarcastic jibes with each other just as Dorothy and Sophia did in The Golden Girls.

After the unexpected death of a mutual friend Bunny asks Jerry an eternally youthful hunky and likeable but slightly vague flight attendant played by Matt Bomer plus their mutual friend Arthur Broussard a quick witted fashionista to relocate to Palm Springs and move in with him and his mother so they can see more of each other.

I doubt very much that Mid Century Modern will run for the 7 series and 177 episodes that The Golden Girls achieved .

In fact I doubt without the late Linda Lavin as Sybil who has many of the best moments in this series that there will be a series 2 .

I'm glad this entertaining series was made and wish it success as there's not enough LGBTQ mainstream humour on our screens and with the lack of diversity inclusion in America these days it's necessary our culture and humour is visible .

Can we stop with the Golden Girls Comparison?

Is the show funny? Yes.

Is the cast great? Yes.

Is it wonderful to just have simple storylines and laugh out loud moments? Yes.

Is it a modern day Golden Girls? No.

Golden Girls was its own wonderful comedy powerhouse. A once in an infinity show.

Three friends living together doesn't make it Golden Girls. Neither does there being a crotchety mother or them being in a place with Palm trees.

It's followed the perfect formula for a good, light comedy that sadly has been forgotten over the years.

It is a little sad though that the first season is already dated. Hopefully the second season will catch up with the times.

Cute and a fun watch

The show is cute and the main cast do a good job in their performances. The jokes are cliché and miss more than they land but there are funny moments. The show slowly starts to improve with each episode. Nathan Lane definitely brings the laughs as the main character Bunny and proves he still has the acting and comedy chops that carries the show. Who knew that Matt Bomer would surprise as the lovable but dimwitted Jerry. Nathan Lee Graham is also good as Arthur. So sad that Linda Lavin is gone she was good as Bunny's mom. If the show should get a second season she will be missed. Overall a fun watch and something you can binge watch.

Feels extremely forced!

As a gay man, this feels extremely forced and over the top. Overly flamboyant!!! The audiences laughter even feels fake. Can play a drinking game with how many times they say QWEEN!! Omg

Does Matt Bomer ever close his eyes in this series? Looks like his on cocaine or uppers, and his acting is atrocious and feels forced.

Linda was the only entertaining character. Poor Nathan Lane! Go back as a guest on Only Murders in the Building. You were much better on that series with your charisma with Martin Short.

Gave it two episodes and I'm done. Which is sad because I was really looking forward to this series.

Totally Laugh Out Loud Funny!

I read that the show was compared to the Golden Girls sorta of, so I decided to watch it on Hulu.

I was pleasantly surprised about how hysterically funny it is. I was laughing from beginning to the end and continued watching Episodes after Episode and literally laughing out loud. For the rest of the day. They only got funnier, especially when they would sing together. The best part, I had no idea Matt Bomer was in this show. Sigh.. Man is so so gorgeous, but I didn't realize how funny he is. Matt's character Jerry is adorable and if want to compare him to a Golden Girl character he's definitely the Rose character.

Nathan Lane, what more could I say about this man's talent? He's a comedian genius. Period!

I'm new to Nathan Lee Graham talent. But, he fits right in with Matt and Nathan.

When I begin watching it and saw Linda Lavin, I was surprised because I knew she had recently passed away. I quickly read up on her passing and sadly she passed while making the show. It's very sad. Her character, Sybil (Bunny's Mom, Nathan Lane's character)was so funny also and she was a no nonsense and got right to the point when the boys needed it. I don't know if they plan to replace her or write her out. Even though show is new, Linda is really going to be missed.

Give it a chance and give it a watch. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Well, unless you don't like beautiful, talented gay men.
