BFI Distribution Awards: ‘Io Capitano’, ‘Copa 71’ & ‘Kneecap’ Among Largest 2024 Recipients
Image
Here’s our annual rundown of the largest distribution awards handed out by the British Film Institute. This list covers cash handed out in 2024.

The BFI supports cinema releases through its audience fund, which hands cash to individual titles as well as organizations such as festivals and independent cinemas.

Matteo Garrone’s Venice-winning drama Io Capitano received the largest award for an individual title with £70,000. The cash went towards aiding the film release with “a broad marketing campaign targeting 18-30 and Senegalese/Black West African audiences across the UK.” The BFI states that “funded activity included “digital advertising, podcast sponsorship, social media campaign, grassroots outreach and creation of access materials.”

An award from the BFI National Lottery will support the release of Io Capitano with a broad marketing campaign targeting 18-30 and Senegalese/Black West African audiences across the UK. Funded activity included “digital advertising, podcast sponsorship, social media campaign,...

“It was a bug! It wasn’t supposed to be that way”: Ex-io Interactive Boss Hasn’t Forgotten the Greatest Hitman Bug That Became a Legendary Meme
Image
Hitman’s last trilogy, the World of Assassination series, provides what we consider some of the finest stealth-action gameplay that someone can get into, offering what is, without a doubt, one of the most intricate sandbox environments in all of gaming.

That’s quite the hyperbole for one series, though, isn’t it? But you see, for our money, such a statement is well deserving of a franchise that has given birth to one of the greatest memes in gaming, a bug that even the developers could never forget even by the trilogy’s end.

Before we get into the meat of things, let us refresh our memories and take a trip down memory lane. So, you might remember the “homing...

New Anthony Mackie Monster Movie Debuts On Rotten Tomatoes With Star's Fourth Splat In Just 3 Years
Image
Anthony Mackie's new monster movie has continued a grim Rotten Tomatoes trend for the star. The Independent Spirit Award nominated actor debuted in the 2002 movie 8 Mile, which also starred Eminem and Mekhi Phifer. Since then, he has gone on to a wide variety of projects, though he is likely best known for playing Sam Wilson, also known as the Falcon and later Captain America, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This ongoing tenure in the franchise began with 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Other Anthony Mackie movies outside the MCU encompass a wide variety of genres. This includes the comedies What's Your Number?, The Night Before, and Playing It Cool as well as the dramas Brother to Brother, Million Dollar Baby, Half Nelson, and Detroit. He has also taken on several major television roles in the 2020s, including starring in Altered Carbon, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,...

Hitman Developer Promises More James Bond Games If 007 Project Is Well Received
Image
Hitman developer Io Interactive has big plans for its James Bond game if it manages to take off. Serving as a follow-up to the fantastic Hitman: World of Assassination Trilogy, there's still very little known about Io's take on the world's most famous spy but the studio's track record for creating ambitious, expansive sandbox maps filled with secrets and emergent gameplay is enough to make most fans excited. James Bond is the first time the studio is working with an IP that it doesn't own but that's not preventing it from shooting for the stars.

In an interview with IGN, Io Interactive boss Hakan Abrak confirms that if its 007 game finds the audience it's looking for and becomes a massive success, the developer wants to turn it into a trilogy:

"What's exciting about that project is that we actually got to do an original story. So it's not a gamification of a movie.

Ranking Netflixs Recent String Of Apocalyptic Movies (Theres Been A Lot)
Image
Since the end of 2018, Netflix has released eight apocalyptic movies. Some, like 2023's Leave The World Behind, have been a qualified success. However, others, like Io, have failed to deliver on their intriguing premise.

While Netflix is now a major movie producer across all genres, the streaming service seems to have a particular fixation with apocalyptic movies. Since the release of Bird Box in late 2018, the platform has produced no less than eight original movies centered around the apocalypse or apocalyptic events. Considering the scale of production needed to realistically bring such environments to life, compared to other, more economical genres like romantic comedy, this number of movies about the end of the world might strike some as surprisingly high.

With so many different films from the past few years to choose from, genre aficionados are somewhat spoiled for choice. However, when comparing all eight side-by-side, it's clear that some stand up better than others.

“I want to thank those who gave me the opportunity to write this role as I wanted it,” she said, accepting her actress honor.

Breaking Baz: German Stars Christian Friedel, Sandra Hüller & Leonie Benesch Make Their Mark On 2024 Oscars
Image
Sandra Hüller (a Best Actress nominee) and Christian Friedel, stars of Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest — nominated for Best Picture, Best International Picture, Director, Sound, and Adapted Screenplay — are familiar with Shakespeare’s famous verse from Hamlet: ”All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women are merely players …” That’s because both thespians have been playing the Danish prince on stages around Germany for years.

Due to Germany’s repertory system in city and state theaters, an actor can revisit an assortment of plays time after time over a number of years.

Friedel tells me that he first played the Dane in 2012. It’s a sort of rock star Hamlet performed with his band, Woods of Birnam. “It can take years until the piece is really finished,” he explains.

He adds that “It changes as you’re getting older,” an experience he feels with movies as well.

In The Land Of Brothers - Amber Wilkinson - 18848
Raha Amirfazli
The debut film from Raha Amirfazli and Alireza Ghasemi is a refugee drama with a difference, both in terms of its setting and its timescale. The stream of films about the refugee experience on the fringes of Europe has continued this year with the likes of Io Capitano and The Green Border, which, like many before them, focus on the struggles of refugees to reach safe haven.

This triptych of stories - connected by an extended family - takes a different tack. It is set within Iran after migration has happened and bookended by the beginning and the end of the US invasion of Afghanistan from 2001 to 2021, allowing the writer/directors to explore systemic injustices faced by those who have sought sanctuary in the country. The invasion was just the driver of the latest wave of refugees, with an intertitle at the start of the film noting that five...

Coming into the evening, Barbie and Succession led the charge with nine nominations apiece, but Succession ultimately fared better, winning four awards, including Best Television Series in the Drama category, best male actor (Kieran Culkin), best female actor (Sarah Snook), and best supporting male actor (Matthew Macfadyen). Roberto Benigni Talks Italy’s Oscar Candidate ‘Io Capitano’ With Director Matteo Garrone and Actor Seydou Sarr – Watch (Exclusive)
Image
Roberto Benigni, whose film “Life Is Beautiful” won three Oscars in 1999, has come out of the woodwork to support Matteo Garrone’s Golden Globe-nominated “Io Capitano,” which is Italy’s current Oscar candidate for best international feature film.

The revered yet reclusive Italian actor/director, whose most recent big screen role is playing Geppetto in Matteo Garrone’s hit 2019 live-action adaptation of “Pinocchio,” is clearly a big fan of “Io Capitano” (the title translates to “Me Captain”). The movie narrates the Homeric journey of two young African men, Seydou and Moussa, who decide to leave Dakar to reach Europe.

Garrone’s immigration drama realistically depicts their plight through the pitfalls of the desert, the horrors of detention centers in Libya and the dangers of the sea. Variety critic Guy Lodge in his review called “Io Capitano” the director’s “most robust, purely satisfying filmmaking since Garrone’s international breakthrough with ‘Gomorrah’ 15 years ago.

25 Best Netflix Original Sci-Fi Movies
Image
The best Netflix sci-fi movies showcase a range of stories, from post-apocalyptic tales to time travel adventures. Despite some lackluster movies in its catalog, Netflix proves its ability to create epic sci-fi adventures. Access to international sci-fi films is a bonus for audiences, expanding the selection of movies available on the platform.

Like horror, science fiction is a relatively underappreciated genre, but the best Netflix sci-fi movies have proven that the genre is well worth audiences' attention. As with all genres, science fiction movies feature a variety of steadfast tropes but ultimately seek to tell stories centered around science-based phenomena that enter the realm of the unknown. Not all sci-fi films feature interstellar space travel or giant robots, and the genre has been home to creature features and time travel movies as well.

There's no question that the Netflix catalog is vast, and with its near-constant stream of content has...

How ‘Jury Duty’ Concocted Its Pitch-Perfect Bromance With the Help of James Marsden
Ronald Gladden in GMA3: What You Need to Know (2020)
This past spring, social media lit up around a very new kind of American Sweetheart: 30-year-old Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor who believed he was signing up for a documentary on the jury system and instead ended up being the adored lead presence of Amazon Freevee’s fish-out-of-water comedy “Jury Duty.” Gladden answered a Craigslist ad, the producers took a shine to him, and history was made.

“So, I wasn’t part of the Ronald process,” Emmy-nominated casting director Susie Farris told TheWrap. “Ronald is a real person, and I don’t cast reality. [Laughs] But you know, obviously, the crazy part about the show is that every single person except for one is an actor.”

And that’s what made “Jury Duty” one of the year’s most singular TV challenges: casting buoyant, quick-witted, versatile actors that the general public would not recognize to improvise against Gladden as his fellow jurors,...

Film Review: Perfect Days (2023) by Wim Wenders
Image
by Paweł Mizgalewicz

If we assume that films, like people, can be called „half-Asian”, then „Perfect Days” could be placed in such category. Of course, it takes place in Japan. It seems to be based on Japanese stories, the characters are Japanese, all the actors are Japanese, and they speak in Japanese (not that there is a lot of talking at all). But you can probably also feel at various points that the film's director, cinematographer and the post-production crew were European. It is quite obviously a Tokyo Story, influenced by Yasujiro Ozu strongly. It triumphs as a love letter to Ozu, and generally to what is often described as a wonder of Japanese culture. They're so humble! It's also a must-see for anyone fascinated with Tokyo, maintaining the “man, I love this city” vibe basically throughout the whole thing. But there is a reason why a love letter is...

The Matrix Resurrections Failed Its Best Human Vs. Machine Story
Image
Throughout various scenes, The Matrix Resurrections teased a resolution to some of its foundational plot points but ultimately failed to deliver on its best humans vs. machines storyline. Matrix 4 arrived after a decades-long hiatus, promising a return to the unique world-building that the Wachowskis created at the dawn of the new millennium, but ultimately chose to lampoon the concept of sequels in general and subvert fan expectations rather than provide a follow-up to the events of the original Matrix trilogy. What should have been the central premise became a side note as the movie regurgitated old ideas through Neo and Trinity unplugging from the Matrix and defeating the machines all over again.

At one point, General Niobe explains to Neo that in the 60 years since the peace accord with the machines, even after what happened to Zion in the Matrix trilogy, it was still destroyed during the Machine Civil War.

Netflix Teams With U.N. Climate Conference for Eco-Oriented Collection of Titles
Image
Can storytelling help save the planet? Netflix thinks so: The company worked with the team behind the United Nations’ COP26 international climate conference to curate a collection of sustainability stories on the streaming service.

The Netflix “Together for Our Planet” collection of 30 TV shows, films and documentaries includes real-life nature documentaries like “Our Planet” and Oscar-winner “My Octopus Teacher”; climate-science docs like “Breaking Boundaries”; dramas like Norwegian TV series “Ragnorak”; sustainability travelogue series “Down to Earth With Zac Efron”; and films including Bong Joon-ho’s pro-vegetarian fantasy “Okja” (pictured above) and Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax.”

To be sure, Netflix also sees an opportunity to incrementally boost its subscriber rolls as well as burnish its brand with the eco-friendly content initiative.

Netflix customers can browse the collection at this link. The company also is making episodes from original series “Our Planet” and “Explained,” as well as feature-length documentary “Chasing Coral,” available...

Top 5 Oscars upsets: Frances McDormand, Anthony Hopkins, H.E.R. …
Image
The 2021 Oscars were presented on Sunday night, April 25, and after such an unpredictable year, thousands of Gold Derby users actually did a pretty good job of predicting the winners. Our collective odds were correct in 18 out of 23 categories. That means our hive mind was only wrong five times. So let’s take a look at the races we got wrong, and check out the complete list of winners here.

SEE2021 Oscar winners list in all 23 categories

Best Actress: Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) — ranked fourth with 4/1 odds

Normally it wouldn’t be surprising when the star of the Best Picture winner also wins for acting, but the way the awards season was going this was a somewhat confounding result. “Nomadland” won Best Picture at the Golden Globes, but McDormand Best Actress lost to Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”). Then “Nomadland” won at the Critics Choice Awards, but McDormand lost...

Oscars 2021: Complete List of Academy Award Winners
Anthony Hopkins at an event for La légende de Beowulf (2007)
That was a bit of a long engagement wasn’t it? In most years, the Oscars are a distant memory by mid-March, but here we are approaching the end of April, and only now are we learning who the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences really think is the best.

Oscars 2021 are done, and with them we realize the strange year that was 2020 is perhaps finally in the rearview. Still, it doesn’t mean that year will leave without a few bitter surprises. Likely more than a few folks were disappointed by the shocking final moment of the night when Anthony Hopkins upset the late Chadwick Boseman in the Best Actor category. Unusually, the award was even presented as the final of the evening, and we’ve unpacked some of the implications of that here.

However, it should be said Hopkins is devastating in The Father, and there are...

Oscar nominee profile: Leslie Odom Jr. (‘One Night in Miami’) is a double nominee for acting and songwriting
Image
Leslie Odom Jr. gave one of the year’s most inspired performances as soul icon Sam Cooke in Regina King‘s directorial debut, “One Night in Miami.” The Amazon film concludes with Odom belting out a spine-tingling rendition of Cooke’s classic Civil Rights Movement anthem, “A Change is Gonna Come,” a tearful climax that puts the actor’s range of talents on full display. For his efforts, Odom has been nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song.

This marks the first year the Grammy and Tony winner has contended at the Oscars. In Odom’s first race he faces off against fellow first-timers Paul Raci (“Sound of Metal”) and Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) along with previous nominees Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) and Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”).
