Film Independent has named Daniel Barosa, Aron Kantor, Satinder Kaur, Nina Ljeti, Quintessence McGee, Natália Sellani and Honora Talbott as its seven screenwriters selected for its 27th annual Screenwriting Lab.

The lab is designed to provide individualized story and career development for screenwriters with fiction feature screenplays.

The multi-disciplinary event is so massive — covering everything from film and TV to music, virtual reality, comedy, and tech— that it often feels impossible to sift through everything on the schedule. But IndieWire was on the ground throughout the film and TV portion of the festival, and we’ve selected 15 film and TV projects that are worthy of your continued attention.

Exclusive: Kelly Marie Tran (The Wedding Banquet) and David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) are set to topline Kodak SuperXX, a psychological thriller marking the feature directorial debut of Auden Bui, which is going into production this year.

Written by Tony Rettenmaier (They Cloned Tyrone), the indie is set against an atmospheric Los Angeles and follows Linh (Tran), a quiet woman whose solitary life revolves around her work as a darkroom developer at one of the city’s last boutique photo labs. Her quiet existence takes a paranoid turn when she becomes entangled with a mysterious stranger (Dastmalchian), whose photographs reveal a dark secret.

X-Men '97 received highly positive reviews and was widely embraced by the majority of fans. Some episodes were better than others, but one instalment in particular stood out as a low point of the season for a lot of viewers.

Episode 4, "Motendo; Lifedeath - Part 1," featured a mostly self-contained Jubilee adventure along with the first part of a Storm/Forge focused story which was supposed to build towards a romantic relationship forming between the characters.

Unfortunately, this part of the episode felt very rushed, with complaints that the connection between Ororo and the mystical mutant inventor seemed forced. "Lifedeath - Part 1" also introduced Storm's demonic Adversary, a bird-like creature who arrives near the end of the episode with hardly any explanation.

Storm, one of the most recognizable and powerful members of the X-Men, was mishandled in an early Marvel movie, but it's safe to say that 2024 has redeemed the character with two major Marvel releases, including What If...?. Storm, real name Ororo Munroe, is one of the X-Men's most formidable members as an omega-level mutant with the power to control every facet of the weather. Marvel Comics typically writes the personality to match this powerful presence, presenting her as an authoritative and regal character who has even taken leadership of the team.

Storm has appeared in six live-action X-Men movies. The original of Fox's somewhat convoluted X-Men timelines sees Halle Berry embody the role of an older Ororo, while Alexandra Shipp portrays a younger version in the altered timeline. Unfortunately, Storm hardly receives the gravitas she deserves in these appearances, and while she plays a relatively substantial supporting role in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand,...

Arcane executive producer Marc Merrill has clarified how many follow-up shows are currently in development for the expanding League of Legends universe. While Arcane season 3 won't be happening, the world of Riot Games' lore will be continuing in new TV projects that are currently in development. It was previously confirmed by co-showrunner Christian Linke that future regions to be explored include Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia, with the potential for a movie exploring one of these regions as well. He also revealed the next project is already a year into development.

However, Marc Merrill has since clarified Linke's comments, explaining that there are not three Arcane follow-ups in the works. Instead, the unknown number of upcoming shows will explore three regions in total, not necessarily one per series. The executive producer also hinted at potential video game tie-ins within the League of Legends TV universe, opening the door for more creative region exploration.

It's always risky reviving a beloved movie series long after the fact. The original Beetlejuice movie, about a malevolent spirit (Michael Keaton) who causes chaos for a family, came out back in 1988. Now, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has debuted in theaters, with original cast members like Keaton and Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz) returning for the occasion, along with newcomers like Jenna Ortega as Astrid. Could lightning strike twice?

That's a big yes. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice swept up nearly $150 million from around the world ($111 million domestic) in its opening weekend, already handily beating its budget of $100 million. According to The A.V. Club, it's the second best opening weekend in director Tim Burton's career, beaten only by Alice in Wonderland, which made $116 million domestically back in 2010.

Labor Day proved to have a pretty lackluster outing at the movies but as we near spooky season, we knew one movie would help bridge the gap between the beaches and the haunted houses.

After strong daily outings and major buzz, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice expectedly took the #1 spot this weekend, pulling in $110 million and marking not only the third-best opening weekend of the year but one of Tim Burton’s biggest box office openings ever, trailing only Alice in Wonderland. For the record, 1988’s Beetlejuice took in $8 million on its opening weekend. Even when adjusted for inflation, the sequel pulled in more than five times that over the course of just one weekend.

The Forge Falcons came up with a ‘Helljumpers‘ Halo Infinite project which provides a Helldivers 2-like PvE experience using Halo Infinite‘s Forge. The studio aimed for a release in early June but the final release date has been revealed: 28th June. The Forge Falcons revealed that the development is going extremely well, however, they will have to delay the project if it doesn’t meet their expectations.

The Warhammer 40K universe is known for its dark, gritty, and brutal storytelling, and Space Marine 2 seems like it won’t be an exception. The protagonist, Captain Titus, has been through hell and back since the first game, and it’s no wonder he’s now a more bitter and ruthless character.

Fans who have followed his journey will understand why he’s become so hardened, and for newcomers, his transformation will definitely make for a compelling story.

The indie dark comedy Forge, currently shooting in Miami, has set its supporting cast.

Newcomers include Edmund Donovan (Civil War), Eva De Dominici (The Cleaning Lady), Jack Falahee (How to Get Away with Murder), T. R. Knight (The Flight Attendant), Sonya Walger (For All Mankind), Raymond Ma (Always Be My Maybe) and Dawn Ying Yuen (The Harvest).
