Earl Sweatshirt’s Rap Mastery — And Optimism — Is Nothing New
Image
Last year, Earl Sweatshirt’s verse on “Words2LiveBy” went viral, as some fans were perplexed to hear him rapping on such an uptempo beat. He’s become known for rhyming in hushed tones over melancholy production, a sound that’s birthed an entire wing of like-minded indie rappers. But that’s just one part of Earl’s artistic arsenal; he’s shown an ability to get rhymes off on a variety of production. It feels like, from the beginning of his career, when fans (and journalists) wouldn’t stop...

‘The Balconettes’ Trailer: Noémie Merlant Reunites with Céline Sciamma for a Rape Revenge Saga with a Marilyn Monroe Twist
Image
Noémie Merlant’s second directorial feature marks a reunion with one of her most iconic collaborators: Her “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” director Céline Sciamma, who co-wrote Merlant’s latest film “The Balconettes.”

Merlant once again transforms onscreen in the role of C-list actress Élise, who has recently been cast as Marilyn Monroe in a TV movie. “The Balconettes” centers on a trio of roommates (one of whom is Élise) that “meddle in the lives of their neighbors from their Marseilles balcony during a sweltering heat wave, until a late-night drink spirals into a bloody confrontation,” as the logline reads. The feature co-stars Souheila Yacoub, Sanda Codreanu, and Lucas Bravo, who filmed “The Balconettes” right before Melanie Laurent’s true crime caper “Freedom.” Bravo previously told IndieWire that his turn in “The Balconettes” was a “very demanding role” as he was playing a “sociopath.”

Merlant made her feature directorial debut with “Mi Ubita,...

Forge Review: Sibling Bonds Under Neon Skies
Jing Ai Ng
Under the neon glare of Miami’s art world—and beneath its opulence—Forge invites viewers into the intricate dance of deception. Jing Ai Ng’s first feature, unveiled at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival, traces the daring path of Coco and Raymond Zhang, Chinese American siblings whose exquisite forgeries bankroll a precarious existence. When trust‑fund heir Holden Beaumont recruits them for a monumental scam, their calculated precision collides with the determined pursuit of FBI agent Emily Lee.

Shot by Leo Purman, Miami emerges as both sun‑drenched paradise and shadowy underbelly, its vibrant palettes and looming decay echoing traditions of Indian parallel cinema that merge realism with symbolic weight. As Forge unfolds, it channels the moral complexity of Bollywood capers—where family loyalty and personal ambition tangle in equal measure—and raises questions of belonging, artifice and self‑definition in a globalized age. This section will explore how...

‘Forge’ Filmmaker Jing Ai Ng Signs With Black Bear
Image
Exclusive: Black Bear’s management arm has signed writer and director Jing Ai Ng for representation.

Ng’s debut feature, Forge, premiered this year at SXSW. Developed through Film Independent’s Screenwriters Lab, Forge is set in Miami’s art world and follows siblings Raymond and Coco Zhang—gifted but struggling artists who operate a covert forgery ring from the back of their family’s restaurant. When a disgraced millionaire coerces them into recreating masterpieces for his private collection, they become entangled in a dangerous web of deception and ambition. The film stars Kelly Marie Tran and Andie Ju.

Ng’s short film Delta, an Asian-American folk story, won Gold in the Passion Project category at the 2023 Cannes Lions Young Director Award. She also holds an Mfa in Directing from the American Film Institute Conservatory, where she made the short Fleck as her thesis project. A coming-of-age drama, Fleck follows Jamie,...

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Star Kelly Marie-Tran Would "Absolutely" Return as Rose Tico
Image
With Star Wars preparing for its next era — including Daisy Ridley’s confirmed return as Rey, and Star Wars Celebration to come this week — fans are naturally wondering who else from the sequel trilogy might be coming back. And for Kelly Marie Tran, the answer is simple: she’d return as Rose Tico in a heartbeat. While promoting her new film The Wedding Banquet (out April 18), Tran spoke with Cbr about her love for the Star Wars universe and the character that launched her into pop culture stardom. Tran, who debuted as Rose in 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, made it crystal clear she’s game for more:

“I have so much love and gratitude for that universe and that world,” Tran said. “[Wedding Banquet co-star] Lily [Gladstone]'s a big Star Wars fan as well. We've talked about it. I remain such [a Star Wars fan]. It has such a warm place in my heart,...

'We've Talked About It': Kelly Marie Tran on Possible Return as Rose Tico in New Star Wars Project
Image
Daisy Ridley is soon returning as Rey in a follow-up to the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and this development may have fans of the franchise wondering which other returning stars could be joining her in the future. One possibility is for Kelly Marie Tran to reprise her role as Rose Tico, and given her continued love for Star Wars, Tran herself would love to see this happen.

Tran commented on a possible Star Wars return during a new interview with Grae Drake of Cbr to promote her latest movie, The Wedding Banquet, which premieres on April 18. While the Star Wars sequel trilogy had been very polarizing with fans when the three installments were released, they have been getting increased love in more recent years, which includes more appreciation shown for characters like Rose.

"I have so much love and gratitude for that universe and that world," Tran said. "[tt0107156 autoWedding Banquet...

The Best Movies and Shows of SXSW 2025
Image
Another SXSW has come and gone, bringing premieres of many of the biggest movies and shows coming out later in 2025. The multi-disciplinary event is so massive — covering everything from film and TV to music, virtual reality, comedy, and tech— that it often feels impossible to sift through everything on the schedule. But IndieWire was on the ground throughout the film and TV portion of the festival, and we’ve selected 15 film and TV projects that are worthy of your continued attention.

From star-studded headliners like Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Hollywood satire “The Studio” and Christopher Landon’s latest horror effort “Drop” to small independent films, the festival offered an excellent slate of narrative and documentary projects for film and TV lovers of all stripes. Several of our favorites came from first-time directors, including Jing Ai Ng’s art crime thriller “Forge” and Matthew Shear’s neurotic story of missed connections “Fantasy Life.

‘Forge’ Review: Jing Ai Ng Puts a Fresh Coat of Paint on a Satisfying Crime Caper
Image
In “Forge,” writer-director Jing Ai Ng never reveals the secret recipe for the lacquer that has made it possible for Raymond (Brandon Soo Hoo) and Coco Zhang (Andie Ju) to pass off their replicas of fine art as the real thing. But the scientific elements involved are beside the point, for the second-generation Chinese American siblings know it’s confidence that will play the biggest role in convincing experts in the field that they’re in possession of legit paintings from local masters. After all, they’ve spent years watching their parents struggle with that dynamic in a culture that wasn’t their own.

Although Ng’s energetic debut feature has the expected crackerjack appeal of two underdogs attempting to outwit those with all the power, the real excitement comes from posing a more interesting version of the question of what is real. It may only be a matter of...

Beau DeMayo Says X-men '97 Episode 4 Felt "Off" Because Marvel Handed It Over To What If...?'s Editor
Image
X-Men '97 received highly positive reviews and was widely embraced by the majority of fans. Some episodes were better than others, but one instalment in particular stood out as a low point of the season for a lot of viewers.

Episode 4, "Motendo; Lifedeath - Part 1," featured a mostly self-contained Jubilee adventure along with the first part of a Storm/Forge focused story which was supposed to build towards a romantic relationship forming between the characters.

Unfortunately, this part of the episode felt very rushed, with complaints that the connection between Ororo and the mystical mutant inventor seemed forced. "Lifedeath - Part 1" also introduced Storm's demonic Adversary, a bird-like creature who arrives near the end of the episode with hardly any explanation.

In the thread below, former showrunner Beau DeMayo claims that the reason this episode felt so "off" is because the show's co-executive producer (we assume he's referring to Victoria Alonso) "hated" his original idea,...

2024 Finally Made Up For Marvel's Storm Mishandling In 2 Major Ways
Image
Storm, one of the most recognizable and powerful members of the X-Men, was mishandled in an early Marvel movie, but it's safe to say that 2024 has redeemed the character with two major Marvel releases, including What If...?. Storm, real name Ororo Munroe, is one of the X-Men's most formidable members as an omega-level mutant with the power to control every facet of the weather. Marvel Comics typically writes the personality to match this powerful presence, presenting her as an authoritative and regal character who has even taken leadership of the team.

Storm has appeared in six live-action X-Men movies. The original of Fox's somewhat convoluted X-Men timelines sees Halle Berry embody the role of an older Ororo, while Alexandra Shipp portrays a younger version in the altered timeline. Unfortunately, Storm hardly receives the gravitas she deserves in these appearances, and while she plays a relatively substantial supporting role in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand,...

Arcane EP Clarifies How Many Follow-Up Shows Are Actually In Development
Image
Arcane executive producer Marc Merrill has clarified how many follow-up shows are currently in development for the expanding League of Legends universe. While Arcane season 3 won't be happening, the world of Riot Games' lore will be continuing in new TV projects that are currently in development. It was previously confirmed by co-showrunner Christian Linke that future regions to be explored include Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia, with the potential for a movie exploring one of these regions as well. He also revealed the next project is already a year into development.

However, Marc Merrill has since clarified Linke's comments, explaining that there are not three Arcane follow-ups in the works. Instead, the unknown number of upcoming shows will explore three regions in total, not necessarily one per series. The executive producer also hinted at potential video game tie-ins within the League of Legends TV universe, opening the door for more creative region exploration.

Forgery Confirmed on November 4 Days of Our Lives
Image
Here we go again—another forgery dealing with Xander’s claim to the Kiriakis fortune. Before it was, Theresa and Konstantin changed Victor’s heir to Alex. Now, it’s Vivian and Philip claiming that Victor wanted Philip to inherit his estate and all that it entailed. All was revealed in the Monday, November 4 episode of Days of Our Lives.

Forge This

This whole forgery is unsurprising, considering it’s Vivian (Louise Sorel) and Philip (John-Paul Lavoisier). Philip has never shied away from being shady, and we all know what Vivian is capable of.

Let’s just hope the letter will hold up in a court of law. Honestly, as much as it would be great for Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) to walk again, it shouldn’t be at the expense of the family business. Even though Xander (Paul Telfer — Days’s October Performer of the Month) is Victor’s sole heir,...

Beetlejuice sequel crushes the box office, Jenna Ortega previews Wednesday season 2
Image
It's always risky reviving a beloved movie series long after the fact. The original Beetlejuice movie, about a malevolent spirit (Michael Keaton) who causes chaos for a family, came out back in 1988. Now, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has debuted in theaters, with original cast members like Keaton and Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz) returning for the occasion, along with newcomers like Jenna Ortega as Astrid. Could lightning strike twice?

That's a big yes. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice swept up nearly $150 million from around the world ($111 million domestic) in its opening weekend, already handily beating its budget of $100 million. According to The A.V. Club, it's the second best opening weekend in director Tim Burton's career, beaten only by Alice in Wonderland, which made $116 million domestically back in 2010.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is unique in that it uses mostly practical rather than computer-generated effects, very uncommon for a major spectacle movie like this today. I dunno if that...

Weekend Box Office: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice scares up $110m, easily surpassing original’s total run
Image
Even though summer is officially out of the way, the box office was still something to keep an eye on this weekend. Labor Day proved to have a pretty lackluster outing at the movies but as we near spooky season, we knew one movie would help bridge the gap between the beaches and the haunted houses.

After strong daily outings and major buzz, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice expectedly took the #1 spot this weekend, pulling in $110 million and marking not only the third-best opening weekend of the year but one of Tim Burton’s biggest box office openings ever, trailing only Alice in Wonderland. For the record, 1988’s Beetlejuice took in $8 million on its opening weekend. Even when adjusted for inflation, the sequel pulled in more than five times that over the course of just one weekend.

Since we all pretty much knew that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice would be the ghost with the most...

X-Men's Wild New "Analog" Gadget Redefines How the Franchise Chooses Its Villains
Image
X-Force's new invention "the Analog" predicts world-ending threats before they happen, giving them a crucial advantage over their enemies. In prior stories, the X-Men fight villains who seek them out and attack them - now, they're on the offensive. While the Analog may prevent tragedies, there is a risk in knowing the future, as seen in Marvel's exploration of the repercussions in Civil War II.

The X-Men have no shortage of incredible technology at their disposal, but X-Forces latest invention changes how mutantkind will even define its enemies. While mutants might be at a huge disadvantage in the new 'From the Ashes' era, they do have one game-changing asset that could make X-Force Marvel's most vital team. However, power like this cuts both ways, and Forge's new mutant team may regret this advantage with time.

One Of The Most Frustrating BG3 Boss Fights Actually Has A Very Simple Solution
Image
Baldur's Gate 3's Grym boss fight in the Adamantine Forge can be challenging, but there's a trick. Activating the Grym fight from a distance allows the party to stay safe while continually attacking. A healthy dose of randomness can still swing things against even the most prepared party, but with a bit of luck, it's usually possible to push through.

One particularly intimidating Baldur's Gate 3 fight can be found at the Grymforge, where the Adamantine...

“It has not been easy”: Forced to Create Their Own Happiness after Helldivers 2 Debacle, Halo Infinite Modders Reveal Why ‘Helljumpers’ Mod is Taking So Long for Xbox Release
Image
Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2 has been one of the most popular third-person shooter video games for the past few months, however, Xbox players never got to experience the game since Sony was closely linked with the development of Helldivers 2. This was quite unfortunate but a small development studio called The Forge Falcons wanted to give Xbox players a proper Helldivers 2 experience using their own Xbox-exclusive game, Halo Infinite.

Image
The Warhammer 40K universe is known for its dark, gritty, and brutal storytelling, and Space Marine 2 seems like it won’t be an exception. The protagonist, Captain Titus, has been through hell and back since the first game, and it’s no wonder he’s now a more bitter and ruthless character.

Fans who have followed his journey will understand why he’s become so hardened, and for newcomers, his transformation will definitely make for a compelling story.

Is Space Marine 2 a Prequel or a Sequel?

Captain Titus returns in Space Marine 2.

In the first game, released in 2011, Captain Titus was a very noble and heroic figure, a perfect example of what it means to be a Space Marine. He fought valiantly against the Ork invasion of the Forge World Graia, displaying a great sense of duty and doing his job very well.

However, by the end of the game,...
