In what is turning out to be a banner day for announcing Luigi Mangione documentary projects, a New Luigi Mangione documentary project has entered the fray. Mere hours after the announcement of Alex Gibney's, Emmy-nominated producer of Netflix's Amanda Knox documentary, Stephen Robert Morse, has announced that his own docu-project revolving around the most-talked-about man in America.
In an exclusive report from Variety, Morse laid forth his aspirations for the project, and its coverage of the murder of United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson at the hands of Mangione. The story of the 26-year-old shooter has the nation — and Hollywood, at least today — by the throat, given the brazenness of his crime and his meteoric rise to something of a folk hero on social media. Will a third Luigi Mangione documentary film and/or docu-series enter the arena before the day is through?
What's The Deal With This Luigi Mangione Documentary?...

American-British filmmaker Stephen Robert Morse, best known for his work on popular non-fiction features like Netflix’s Amanda Knox and How to Rob a Bank is developing his own feature documentary on the suspected UnitedHealthcare killer Luigi Mangione.
Morse, a two-time Emmy nominee, will direct the feature, which producers told us will examine the December 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the aftermath through the perspectives of all those affected, including the involved families and Mangione himself.
“This case is complex and raises important questions about vigilantism, the devastating cost of a privatized healthcare system, and the inevitability of violence when peaceful change is seen as impossible,” Morse told us this afternoon. “My goal is to present a balanced exploration of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s assassination, showing all sides of the story while respecting the profound loss of life and its impact on everyone involved.”

A second high-profile documentary is in the works about UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione.

Earlier today Anonymous Content and Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Prods confirmed they are also pursuing a separate documentary project about the case.
Morse’s doc is set to explore the various perspectives of those embroiled in the murder and its aftermath, including the victims, their families and Mangione himself, as well as the moral complexities thrown up by Thompson’s murder. Alongside the case the documentary will provide historical context around one of America’s most pressing – and polarizing – issues,...

Exclusive: Alysia Russo, who was Head of Docuseries at Amazon MGM Studios, is moving to Netflix.
It marks a rare senior executive moving directly between two rival studios.
Russo is understood to be working on feature docs at Netflix. While there are two executives from this team on maternity leave, Russo’s role is unrelated and is a temporary contract, thought to be 18 months.
Russo was behind Amazon docuseries such as LulaRich and its upcoming Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story, which comes from the producers of ID’s Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.
Her move comes less than four months after a restructure within Amazon MGM Studios.
In May, Russo’s boss Lauren Anderson, who was Head of AVOD Programming and Studios Unscripted across U.S. Prime Video and Amazon Freevee, was named Head, Brand and Content Innovation, but continuing to oversee the AVOD originals team.

Despite its title, “How to Rob a Bank” is not an instructional video on how to commit crime. Instead, as its co-director Stephen Robert Morse tells Variety, it’s a documentary about “the consequences of crime.”
The doc, which dropped on Netflix last week, focuses on a prolific ‘90s Seattle bank robber called Scott Scurlock, whom the FBI soon nicknamed Hollywood due to his penchant for elaborate disguises.
Morse (a producer on “Amanda Knox”) and his co-director Seth Porges (“Class Action Park”) began working on the film back in 2020 and quickly tracked down many of those involved in the notorious case.
As the documentary works its way into the streamer’s global top 10, Morse sat down with Variety to discuss the genesis of the project and what he learned from getting up close and personal with a notorious bank robber.

We’re not making this true story up: “Baby Reindeer” has officially booted “The Witcher” from Netflix’s Most Popular TV (English) list.
The Richard Gadd limited series has amassed 84.5 million views globally since its release on April 11. Yet “Baby Reindeer” is no longer making Netflix’s weekly Top 10. Just last week it spent its eighth week on the Top 10 weekly list, clocking in at No. 10, while “Bridgerton: Season 2” has spent a whopping 19 weeks in the Top 10 as the third season of “Bridgerton” has inspired a lot of rewatches.

Scott and his associates almost pulled off one last heist and quit for good, but they were tracked by police.
Netflix's latest true-crime documentary, How to Rob a Bank, tells the story of Scott Scurlock, a bank robber who operated in the 1990s in Seattle. Scott was known to authorities as "Hollywood" due to the movie-grade prosthetics he wore during his heist to conceal his identity. Alongside his accomplices, Scott pulled a series of heists and stole over $2 million before his death in 1996.

Something normal happened at Netflix. “Hit Man,” a well-reviewed film from a top director (Richard Linklater) and a hot star (Glen Powell) in an audience-friendly action title, debuted as #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list.
Something very weird happened at the same time. “Godzilla Minus One,” which had a long-delayed appearance in home formats, made it to #1 both at Netflix and on VOD ($5.99 rental) in its first week. By week two, it fell to #6 at Netflix, while dropping from the top spot at iTunes to #7.
Netflix acquired “Hit Man” for $20 million last year when it premiered at Venice and Toronto to great interest. Reviewed (82 Metacritic) at the level or ahead of most of the streamer’s late-year awards-bait films, the action comedy about a moonlighting professor working undercover for New Orleans police has been #1 for the last three days. Unlike most Netflix originals, does it have staying power?

I’m not going into whether someone like Nelma Kodama deserves to be the focal point of a Netflix documentary or not! Crime on the screen is something that always sells, and the more glamorous it is, the more people you have in the audience. So, it’s only natural for Netflix to churn out documentaries like Nelma Kodama: The Queen of Dirty Money. Just a while ago, the streaming giant had huge success with How to Rob a Bank, and the Nelma Kodama documentary appears to be cut from the same cloth.
Who is Nelma Kodama?
If you Google the name Nelma Kodama, you will find out that the lady is a trafficker. Of course, a routine criminal wouldn’t make it onto Netflix, so it’s quite obvious that Kodama is a big fish in the world of crime. What has she done? There are all kinds of unlawful things related to money,...

How to Rob a Bank, the latest Netflix documentary, takes us back to the mid-nineties, when the United States of America was standing on the brink of an economic boom, and a man with twisted ideologies decided to wage war against the establishment. It is very important to understand the kind of person Scott Scurlock was in order to know what was going on in his mind when he decided to rob a bank. As Scott’s sister puts it, there was a huge part of Scott’s life that he kept private. Nobody knew what was going on inside his mind, though Suzanne had a fair idea that her brother was a bit of a loner. He talked to people, he socialized, and on the face of it, he looked like a pretty normal chap. But there was a part of him that he hid from others, and there...

“How to Rob a Bank” is a Netflix documentary directed by Seth Porges and Stephen Robert Morse.
In the bustling city of Seattle during the early 90s, a man with an affinity for Hollywood heist movies embarked on a daring spree of bank heists, earning him the nickname “Hollywood” among FBI agents. This gentleman astonishingly managed to rob four banks in a single afternoon. This same setting gave rise to tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon, coffee powerhouse Starbucks, and the legendary grunge band Nirvana.
Scott Scurlock, bright and educated in medicine, biology, and chemistry, had an insatiable love for money. He made a hefty fortune manufacturing methamphetamines and when that needed to stop, he turned his attention to robbing banks. Forming a group, they began with small-scale heists, with meager hauls of $2,000 or $3,000. But when Scott hit the main vault, their heists grew, attracting the attention of the FBI.

The new true-crime documentary film on Netflix, How to Rob a Bank, presents a set of unexpected events from the 1990s that gripped the attention of the law and the masses very firm. A single man had made a habit of walking into various banks all over Seattle, wearing prosthetic makeup that completely hid his identity, and robbing thousands of dollars by holding the people inside hostage. How to Rob a Bank covers both the police investigation that followed the robberies as well as an insight into the lives of the perpetrators, making the documentary film quite an interesting watch.

Talk to a police officer, anywhere in the world, and they’ll tell you the same thing: most criminals are stupid. That’s how they get caught. Generally speaking, smart people don’t go in for crime – they can think of less risky ways to get what they want. But what if they did? Directed by Seth Porges (of Class Action Park fame) and Stephen Robert Morse (who produced 2016’s Amanda Knox), How To Rob A Bank tells the true story of the man they called Hollywood, who fell on hard times, watched Point Break, and commenced a crime spree unlike anything seen before or since.
It happened in Seattle, though at times the events recounted here make it sound more like Gotham City. “When he walked into Lake City bank to rob us, he walked straight past his wanted poster,” one bank teller recalls. by then he’d abandoned the dead.

Netflix’s list of new releases for June 2024 look suspiciously like last month’s.
That’s because the biggest item on the schedule is Bridgerton season 3 once again. The final four episodes of Bridgerton‘s third season will premiere on June 13. Polin fans everywhere, rejoice! Other TV items of note this month include the third and final season of Sweet Tooth (June 6), Worst Roommate Ever season 2 (June 26), and That ’90s Show Part 2 (June 28).
Bridgerton aside, Netflix’s original movie options this month might be even more impressive than the TV slate. Richard Linklater’s Hitman, which stars Glen Powell as the titular assassin, premieres on June 7. That will be followed by documentary Black Barbie on June 19, the Jessica Alba-starring Trigger Warning on June 21, and romcom A Family Affair on June 28
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix this month. Note that Netflix marks its international offerings with that respective country’s two-letter country code.
