The title relates to a statement reeled out after every defeat when Paul Lambert was manager of Aston Villa in the English Premier League. For fans, "we go again" became cyclical and defeats often followed the high points of victory, with the lows increasingly starting to outweigh the high points. This represents a key theme in the film, of being trapped in a never ending cycle.
Director Oliver Jolliffe felt that the script offered a good opportunity to tell a sensitive story on love and mental health, how people can be vulnerable mentally which can cause rifts in relationships with loved ones that can't always be helped. There was also room for Oliver to be creative with some genre elements he has always enjoyed with the slight horror elements, drawing on many influences from his favorite film-makers whilst making it his own. The film ultimately is about being human, love and fragility; something every person faces.
Inspired by the works of Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Lee Chang-dong, Mike Leigh, Andrzej Zulawski, Rose Glass and Charlotte Wells. The script also incorporated ideas used in some of Tom Jolliffe's unproduced scripts.
